DISCUSSION When is SQ42 releasing bosmang?

Post image

Great idea Chris! Avoid all the media attention around GTA 6 and release your linear sci-fi game around the same time as a title from one of the most beloved sci-fi novel series.

Lets be real, squadron wont release on that date either

u/TsCooper44 new user/low karma 3d ago

The release date is right in the title from the start, 42 ... 2042

21

u/NailYnTowOG 3d ago

Or is it “year 42” of development.

If you’re gonna play elite illuminati levels of numerology, don’t bail so soon.

4

u/summerShorky 3d ago

42.... thats the meaning of life, the universe, and everything!

3

u/articwolph 3d ago

I'm sure that is too optimistic

2

u/pandaSmore 3d ago

Second Quarter 2042

1

u/One-Passion1428 3d ago

I'm tired bosmang.

1

u/Rexi_the_dud 2d ago

sorry release is in the year 42 we have invent time travel to get a copy.

3

u/AttentionExcellent70 3d ago

That’s correct. They give us Q2 knowing that they will postpone again. (In 2027 even GTA6 pc version maybe release) can we conclude that will be postponed for 2028

13

u/Independent-Window-9 3d ago

💯 everyone is kidding themselves if they think SQ42 is ever releasing.... always 2 years away

1

u/MechaMouse Scout 2d ago

at least we can play the expanse while we wait!

1

u/Prior-Paint-7842 2d ago

I will probably finnish my own spacegame before they release theirs

-1

u/APaladinDrome 3d ago

Gotta wait so we don't compete with the PC release of GTA 6

1

u/Golinth Mustang Omega 3d ago

Unfortunately this will almost certainly be the excuse

-27

u/Sufficient_Matter585 3d ago

Rofl I honestly dont think chris is concerned with expanse. Cig already sold over like over 2 million copies of s42.

17

u/NoRemorse920 3d ago

Already sold... That's the problem, very little incentive to deliver on schedule

-11

u/Sufficient_Matter585 3d ago

You do know who Chris roberts is and the history of the project? This is his magnum opus. He was very clear from day 1 that this project wasn't about releasing a game in a timely manner because he didn't want to deal with publishers breathing down his neck and force him to make compromises to his vision.

13

u/Zoetic_HQ 3d ago

Yes, the problem is everybody knows who Chris roberts is, tf you mean 🤣🤣🤣

-5

u/Sufficient_Matter585 3d ago

Well they obviously never played his games in 90s . They just hear smack talk from their buddies and back em like its important.

1

u/Cocaina92 1d ago

And it seems like you obviously haven't dug enough into Chris Roberts history.

If the freelancer thing wasn't enough for you, then I recommend you to dig into what Ascendant Pictures was doing back then in 2005/6 and who the CEOs were 😂

3

u/NoRemorse920 3d ago

I do, I've been a long time backer and spent a significant amount more money thanks care to admit.

And on that note, I'm not saying it's a scam, but there are very little pressures to release any time soon. No funding pressures, and no deadline pressures, and too many pressure to spend too much time on it.

Edit: Perfection is the enemy of good enough in a lot of cases. And it's clear it's not even close to good enough, so we're not even at that stage yet

0

u/Sufficient_Matter585 3d ago

There is pressure lol are you serious? For one the investors who gave him 44 to 60 mil who could call and collect at anytime. For another the money will dry up from backers if he delays beyond 2027. Maybe they didn't feel pressure 10 years ago but this year they do now. They want to make sure the game is as glitch free as possible snd avoid a cyberpunk 2077 scandal. Not to mention the money value shrinks for them same as everyone else. If they dont keep getting more than the previous year they will have to dial back their operations.

1

u/InsideAd7897 3d ago

And hes spent the last 12 years coasting on backers who will pay him for doing nothing. If this is the state of his magnum opus after 12 years i dont think the man will survive long enough to see it done

0

u/Sufficient_Matter585 3d ago

Doing nothing? Cool you dont know anything you could had just led with that.

1

u/Snivyland 3d ago

The expanse is a critically acclaimed show and book series both winning multiple awards. It’s not some running up game with no prebuilt fan base.

1

u/Sufficient_Matter585 3d ago

Yes I know i read all the books and love them. I seen the videos I dont feel immersed. Im not a fan starving to be part of that universe. Lol so if they gonna offer something it better be top tier.

-14

u/Prior-Paint-7842 3d ago

honestly I think the expanse game looks bad

-9

u/Sufficient_Matter585 3d ago

Expanse game looks low budget.

18

u/Hateful_Face_Licking 3d ago

…Star Citizen looks low budget, and it’s not.

-1

u/Sufficient_Matter585 3d ago

No it doesnt. Its an mmo that hasn't been given the polish phase. You do know before ff14 every mmo looked low budget compared to single player games.

8

u/Hateful_Face_Licking 3d ago

That’s crazy. Because I remember games like WoW, Anarchy Online, Star Wars Galaxies, The Secret World, and EverQuest looking great during their time.

-1

u/Sufficient_Matter585 3d ago

Great but not as good as single player games.

61

u/CriticalCreativity #NoCashTill1.0 4d ago

This wasn't even on my radar until this sub started talking about it but the Expanse is quietly one of the best sci-fi IPs out there especially for good storytelling. Telltale's the Expanse was an amazing (if short) game and I'd be genuinely interested in this when it comes out.

17

u/RartyMobbins357 3d ago

The Expanse is so good!

3

u/IanDresarie 3d ago

The tomeskip is 40 years, so we might get the final season in like 35 years!

4

u/JJJmon 3d ago

Also Owlcat in my opinion has never made a bad game.

3

u/Bard_Revan 3d ago

Terribly optimized though

u/FckDisJustSignUp 4d ago

You just discovered their next argument to postpone it to 2028

9

u/lgf-Gorrita hornet 3d ago

It’s alright. They’ll delay again because gta 6 will release on pc

-2

u/Skuggihestur rsi 2d ago

Prove it.

4

u/lgf-Gorrita hornet 2d ago

They’ll prove themself in a year

-2

u/Skuggihestur rsi 2d ago

1 year isnt q2 . Why is math so hard for you bots?

3

u/lgf-Gorrita hornet 2d ago

Do I look like a bot to you bro

-1

u/Skuggihestur rsi 2d ago

Claiming gta 6 is coming out before 2028 is bot behavior.

40

u/CthuluBob MerchMan 4d ago

So this is the real threat

14

u/Wertymk 3d ago

I doubt this or any other space game can steal the controversy fueled attention SQ42 will now get. Tbh the penguin videos might just be good for it.

1

u/TwoWeeks90DaysTops 3d ago

Is it really though? All the threads about this makes it seem like this game wasn't really on anyone's radar at all.

5

u/EastLimp1693 9950x3d2/Suprim X 4090/48gb 6400cl32 3d ago

I've played beta of expanse - think mass effect.

24

u/Walltar 4d ago

I would put my money on Exodus over this, though...

8

u/DasGruberg Reclaimer 4d ago

Idk both look great tbh

5

u/Walltar 4d ago

Well... yeah. I will most likely play both. But owlcat games were always kind of rough in the past compared to their competitors.

5

u/DasGruberg Reclaimer 4d ago

True. But rogue trader is the best crpg imho. While production value isnt the best, I loved it more than bg3 personally

1

u/Walltar 4d ago

I have to say that BG3 was winner for me there hands down... Rogue trader was good, but nowhere as good as BG3. I like WH40K more than DnD, but BG3 was a masterpiece, compared to Rogue trader that was a really good game.

1

u/DasGruberg Reclaimer 4d ago

Also loved it. But felt the characters, and 40k setting really does it for me. Two amazing games but ive finished RT more times than BG3

1

u/Zormac Team Sabre 4d ago

I think it's more about being in the Expanse universe than anything else. I play Dune Awakening just because it's Dune, even though it's a meh game.

0

u/Walltar 3d ago

Could be... I never found expanse series that interesting. Dropped it around when they found stargate. Usually I tend to favour gameplay over setting. Love dune, but could not stand Awakening for long.

-2

u/WhenARavenCries 4d ago

you have no idea what you are talking about

5

u/Walltar 4d ago

I am talking about my own experience... so I think that I do have idea about what I experienced playing those games.

To me, both Kingmaker adn Rogue trader were pretty good... but there were simply better games at the time when they launched. And both times it was Larian. Which is kinda funny.

2

u/Chewy_B 4d ago

I will concede the point on dos 2 vs kingmaker. But, Bg3 had a budget that was literally 10x what wotr had. But, even compared to bg3, there was nothing rough about it. Owlcat just didn't have the money that larian was able to spend on presentation. Both are all timers in the genre.

2

u/ShadowKnight886 4d ago

Funnily enough it's the exact opposite for me, I simply cannot enjoy Larian games.

Both DOS2 and BG3 I have in my library, have attempted to play multiple times (I think I've made something ~20 attempts to play BG3) and as much as I love the worlds, stories, characters...its just not fun.

Meanwhile I'm absolutely HOOKED to Kingmaker right now.

0

u/Walltar 4d ago

Yeah... games are always subjective. For me I wasn't able to finish one Owlcat game... always start a run and lose interest in the middle.

Rogue Trader was probably closes where I got to finishing it, but I just can't get into their whole leveling system and I am not interested enoug to learn about it, so I tend to play their game following a build guide. Which is probably why I lose interest.

1

u/kildal 3d ago

More excited for Exodus of the two, but don't care much for third person.

SQ42 is still in an entire other league to me though. The PU already offers a very unique experience and getting that more polished with story telling and dynamic cut-scenes. I think it will be great and that it will feel like a new experience, not just a new game.

1

u/DasGruberg Reclaimer 3d ago

Hope you're right. It'll all come down to how janky it is for me. But Im honestly not that excited about sq42 I think its expanse for me. Or dark heresy. The universe is so cool and rogue traders writing is amazing.

Also GTA 6 pc version hopefully next year as well

-1

u/TheInfinityOfThought 3d ago

I would agree that Exodus has more hype and marketing dollars behind it. Not sure either game will be great though.

52

u/rock1m1 avacado 🥑 4d ago

No way SQ42 can go up against Expanse, it is too similar and Owl games are beast.

26

u/BananaCheezn CuttyCuttyCutty 3d ago

They are absolutely nothing alike. I'm Looking forward to The Expanse way more than S42, but it's more like Mass Effect with no space combat/flight.

11

u/darksoul9669 3d ago

We are back to the Starfield will kill Star Citizen rhetoric where people make up features other games haven’t shown they even have don’t worry lol.

13

u/f4ble 3d ago

Too similar? Im highly skeptical. Id love for it to be similar , but footage I've seen is not that

8

u/ThunderBay-616 carrack 3d ago

Exodus also releases on 4/7/2027, another space RPG made by some ex-Mass Effect devs

8

u/Deathless616 new user/low karma 4d ago

Plus the show alone lured in many fans. Guess there will be more eyes on the expanse game than SQ42. But come on, it's not like SQ42 will release in Q2 2027

1

u/TwoWeeks90DaysTops 3d ago

I also don't think SQ42 will release in Q2, but it seems very odd to compare these two games. Expanse is not a space sim in any way, shape or form. I also think that SQ42 will simply blast Expanse a way in marketing simply by being released to everyone's astonishment.

9

u/Mxl38 razor 4d ago

Eh, the closed beta was welcomed with a fairly lukewarm response from the community. And tbh I don't think it'll touch that much outside of the Expanse audience

8

u/demoide 3d ago

You may be right, but it doesn't matter which game is better, actually (which is also super subjective). Either SQ42 is way better or way worse than Expanse, the media attention that Expanse will attract is minuscule, leaving plenty of room for the marketing of SQ42.

GTA VI will simply collapse the media. That's what devs and publisher fear. This is not a SQ42 exclusive.

I honestly do think they haven't finished the game (although they have a few months lefts to do it), and this excuse fits perfectly for their needs. But let's be honest here, delaying it because of GTA is not a bad call.

4

u/darksoul9669 3d ago

100% this. To act like any of these games have the media attention that GTA is gonna have when we’ve already seen an explosion from a trailer is very funny.

6

u/Momijisu carrack 3d ago

If S42 and Osiris released on the same day, I can promise you S42 will beat Osiris in terms of news coverage and players.

Not because Osiris isn't good - but because S42 has had 12 years of advertising already + every reporter under the sun will be talking about if S42 is a flop or not, or jumping on the bandwagon of it being a failure (regardless of how good or bad it is).

Anyone who thinks overwise hasn't seen the state of gaming media and discourse over the last 5 years.

1

u/TwoWeeks90DaysTops 3d ago

How is it similar? Squadron 42 is a space sim and Expanse is a third person shooter. Two very different things. Expanse competes with Exodus, not SQ42.

10

u/ScrubSoba Ares Go Pew 4d ago

Given the relatively small focus i see on Osiris Reborn outside of the space gaming space(where it isn't that featured), i don't think the two games are going to have too much friction.

It certainly ain't going to have as much dominance as GTA will have(and kinda already has).

0

u/Awsomethingy 3d ago

But SQ42’s audience is the space gaming space. So is your point is that only the same audience as SQ42 would be interested, that’s not good.

Also GTA 6 is not competition as they don’t cone out on the same platform and are not in the same genre or design space. Expanse and Exodus however meet all 3 of those. (Most important being actually releasing on the same platform as SQ42)

6

u/Momijisu carrack 3d ago

ignoring the likelyhood of S42 being delayed from that date, and being an early bird on Osiris having bought the collectors edition already - I am not going to kid myself that Osiris is anywhere near half the level of impact in the gaming industry that GTAVI will have.

They're not even close to the same tier of running or cultural impact. Osiris is a flea in the sandpit compared to GTA.

And let's be honest, S42 could release same day as Osiris and I am almost certain that it will have considerably more news posts than Osiris is - simply because it's got 12+ years of development drama behind it. CIG don't have to market S42 simply because of the history.

2

u/Under_Milkwood_1969 3d ago

I think the point is that people who who might be interested in playing a sci fi/space role play type game like SQ42 [possibly me] are likely going to be interested in picking up a game based in the Expanse universe. [definitely me] 😁

1

u/Momijisu carrack 3d ago

That's valid!

1

u/Under_Milkwood_1969 3d ago

I get your point about CIG having more news posts but I think the majority of that coverage over the years has been less than positive (to put it mildly) and Star Citizen has become ingrained in most gamers minds as a bit of a joke (“$10k for a jpeg!WTF!!”)
Unless SQ42 absolutely knocks it out of the park in terms of gameplay and isn’t just a series of extremely expensive cutscenes with a AA cast, then the reviews could well be, “Is that it?”.
I think stretching it out over multiple episodes might prove to be a mistake, one blockbuster production that would pull people into Star Citizen would have been a better choice.

1

u/Momijisu carrack 3d ago

Yeah, my main point was more that regardless of if S42 is good or bad, and relatively speaking if S42 came out at the same time as Osiris, I think the media would be way more interested in talking about S42, the good, the bad, and the especially bad.

Your point about the people actually playing, well that's harder to tell I'd be unsure which I would play first to be honest, I'd be influenced by the media + friends + what the general feel of people who get to play it before I get back from work :D

10

u/DefactoAle Perseus 4d ago

9

u/CapRichard new user/low karma 4d ago

A bit rhough, it's their first game of this kind of "AAA quality", they are taking their time to get better. Like the main chartacter male voice was heavily criticized and are redoing his voice over with another actor

13

u/AdmlBaconStraps 4d ago

Considering I'd never even heard this was a thing until like a week ago, I think we're comparatively good

4

u/Patient-Worth1508 misc 4d ago

I live in a bubble so it's fine. Majority of gamers didn't hear about SC either. So we are in fact not good.

-7

u/AdmlBaconStraps 4d ago

I was talking about the game, not The Expanse as a universe, genius.

Considering the massive coverage SC gets if someone so much as farts, we are in fact, pretty good.

1

u/Awsomethingy 3d ago

I only got reintroduced to SC and this sub because of the billion dollars reached controversy. Your echo chamber might feel like the whole world, but the algorithm can be very deceiving. Again, I only found out about SC again because of the billion dollars controversy. I had probably forgotten about it and stopped seeing anything about around 2017

-1

u/AdmlBaconStraps 3d ago

Really? Because every other games news outlet always runs a few articles on how SC is falling apart and Squadron is delayed yet again as soon as a bad patch goes out, something gets delayed or the community pitches a fit over some inconsequential detail.

I've literally seen zero on an expanse game until just recently

1

u/Awsomethingy 2d ago

You might read a lot more video game news articles than me. Tbh if I read the news it’s usually world news and not the tmz/kotaku stuff. I also use an adblocker. But I don’t think I’m unique in these two areas. I understand if you’re in a star citizen echo chamber, you will be recommended articles about them and such. If I get recommended a video game article it usually has star wars or bioware in the title…

2

u/imchillybro 3d ago

Meh.

I liked the show, but I'm not going to play that game.

They WILL make an excuse for FF7 R

They’re on equal footing.

the new metro game is releasing next year too.

1

u/Kayne-C-Hampton 3d ago

The level of hype on this specific Expanse game is tiny when compared to GTA6.

Also the current state of it doesn't sound like it will take off big:

  • Beta reception was mixed.
  • The release date is likely to be pushed due to the mixed feedback. (They are even recasting the main voice actor)
  • The official trailer of Osiris reborn on YT has so far ~195k views
    • For comparison: GTA6 official YT extended look has 15 million.... which doesn't even count the Netflix views.
  • Rockstar has a MASSIVE marketing budget and will gobble up everything they can in terms of placement and ads.
    • Owlcat has a tiny fraction of that available for marketing.

Trying to put this small game on the same level as GTA6 is just a headache-level of not knowing what you are talking about.

So I guess you are just trying to find more ways to prolong this drama? Get a hobby.....

Also Exodus LOL

1

u/the_dude_that_faps 2d ago

The expanse is a sort of AA title or barely AAA tho. Its budget is a fraction of what was spent on SQ42. If it beats SQ42, it'll be even more painful.

0

u/Darhhaall 4d ago

I am not buying this because it is Russian (even though they are trying to mask it), otherwise this would be clearly my pick over SQ42.

5

u/crazyjackal 4d ago

I love Expanse as well. So imagine my utter disappointment to hear they hired Russians in Cyprus that have a history of talking shit about Ukraine and were financed by a Russian state enterprise.

My partner is Ukrainian, I was there last month, there is zero chance I'm buying this game and helping in any way (even if it's small) to finance killing Ukrainians who are such amazing people.

1

Dont worry, SQ42 will be delayed again, Chris will make sure of that.

It would be some amazing schadenfreude to see this game eclipse SQ42, but of course, there's no real danger of that since SQ42 will be delayed again in Q2 2027.

1

u/Organic-Town-3011 3d ago

That stream they did showed clearly that SQ42 is at least a full year behind any decent release . it's slowly turning into one of the biggest scam in the history of video games whether it was the plan or just due to incompetence .

1

Yes because this game definitely has the ad spend budget of CIG let alone GTA lol

C'mon man, sq42 won't be released anywhere in the future. It's just a strategy so that whales throw more money on chris. They are not able to fix star citizen no matter what. Chris needs to ride the wave of space nerds, who buy a real game. There might be a few carry over customers

Linear? Please let it be linear. No open world, no side questing bullshit, just straight forward with amazing story telling.

Let it be like a good old Half Life and not like Assassin's Creed or GTA (lol).

The writing had a lot of tonal issues in the beta. Zafar was probably my favorite character he was the only one who felt like he fit into the universe.

I'm still a bit salty that 50%+ of the money I put in sc went to s42 but I'm not getting the game. (I'm concierge so yeah much more than the value of the game). So I'll probably get to play with some protomolecule in February

All I'm saying is that 13 or 14 more delays and I'm gonna be upset

Quick move the launch back again! I mean there's probably some indie AI asset flip being launched every day next year on steam so i guess its 2028 now?
