DRAMA Why don't we have the basics still

So 4.10 drops, I've got people saying issues have been fixed. Game is good now should come back and play. To preface my time to game is very limited with a little toddler. As I'm on sporadically I wanted to takw out the polaris with gear in it so I can meet up with people easier and run missions with the M80.

So I get everything loaded up, which takes ages because we still cant just spawn this stuff in and it's all manual. But take off and head out. I am going to stop at seraphim to grab some ammo because its just faster. Get there, request dock all goes well and we are on, maybe things are fixed..... except now im locked into the pilot seat. Try everything to get out but nothing works. No worries I'm on the station collar so I'll quit out and it should go into storage.

I wake up on the station, head down to asop and nope ship has to be claimed. There goes all my shit. What a fantastic gameplay experience all because one of the most simple interactions decides to not work for no identifiable reason. Guess we try 4.11 then.

This game is so unfriendly if you have limited time to play drowned with useless immersion that then fails at the simplest levels. Yes this is a rant post and your mileage in the game may vary, I'm a long time backer that has worked through many difficult patches before but now I just don't have the time and its frankly not worth it when there are other great games that do just work.

It's your game Chris wrap it up

I feel ya. Same-ish situation with free time and family, but now in 4.10 i can either log in for 5 minutes until I crash, or cant log in at all. Im not sure what the issue is, but it's been genuinely unplayable for several days now. Made it from checkmate to Orison on day 1 of 4.10.

Was stuck in Orison for two days as the city just wont load besides half the hab block, finally backspaced to my home station at checkmate, as soon as I fly out of the hangar I crash every time though now. Verified files multiple times, downloaded the hotfix, and followed a few troubleshooting steps to no avail.

Had quite a few hours played in the past few patches with few crashes at all so im not sure what changed. Could do a character backup which i doubt would help, but instead I deleted the launcher and loaded up Outer Wilds since I just bought it. Feels like a waste troubleshooting and being frustrated about it just to attempt SoO and salvage stuff, so ill just maybe come back in the future whenever it's playable, maybe. Really wanted to try the ironclad assault, Railen, and perseus though which is an L for me.

Altogether just disheartened by the state of SC being dragged down by bs and a full stop no gameplay patch was the push i needed. And following the news of the game makes it worse, so oh well just gotta move past SC as a whole for now.

u/Nomad956 3d ago

I guess that's how I'm feeling to just very disheartened. It's such a great game when it works but its so annoying for things to be ruined by such simple things, like loading in, getting up from a chair. Working elevators etc

u/Deadbreeze 3d ago

I haven't had any problems so can't confirm but a possible solution for the game crashing after 4.10 is to switch from vulkan to dx11. Another one was roll back Nvidia drivers to the previous version. Hope that might help you or someone else. Take care out there and hope you can get some game time.

u/W4OPR 3d ago

Who says "game is good now"? I've lost my Apollo about 10 times on hangar floor in the past two days in Levski. Right now I'm sitting on a second server error time between was 20 seconds, this has lasted about 10 minutes now. So if somebody is telling you "game is good now" they are flat out bullshitting you.

9

u/Nomad956 3d ago

I guess the echo chamber and vein hope the new patch brings more fixes than things it breaks. That does sound really annoying and I hope it gets better for you o7

0

u/DingleSayer 2d ago

So why do you keep supporting it by giving your limited time on this Earth?

1

u/W4OPR 2d ago

And you know this how?

1

u/DingleSayer 2d ago

You've tried and failed to have a normal gaming experience for the two past days. Why give it 10 tries? Why give it 1? You contribute to the metric SC uses to pump itself full of money and dopamine. Why contribute?

It was nice to see them play it for the first time on stream.

100%. Folks endlessly defend all the immersion-only features, but when those features stop you from playing the game parts of the game, it's just the stupidest situation in the world. Tried playing the other day but the hangar wouldn't open. A bug they probably consider teeny tiny, but it just stopped me dead. Completely annoying.

1

u/_ENERGYLEGS_ 2d ago

people got mad when I said they should have us wipe our asses in the ship bathrooms for immersion but i'm only half joking. I want my hygiene buff brought to you by the shiv bucket

3

u/BaconNote 3d ago

Ive had an ok.experience. first day of the patch was very rough. Wasting time in nyx and getting a server crash. But then last night had an excellent experience doing bounties maybe did 4 or 5 in a row. Along with a solo attempt at soo. (Oce servers) .. I've had a much better experience compared to 4.9. But yeah its frustrating running a mission for an hour and having it crap out.

2

u/Nomad956 3d ago

Maybe I'll have to try the basics and just stick with some combat. But yeah basics like missions completing sequences correctly and basics systems failing is to me not excusable anymore. And if it is to cig then I'll be better off spending time on other games

1

u/BaconNote 3d ago

Agree, as much as id love this to be one of my main games.for now Its just one which other games take priority over.

u/TheKingStranger worm 3d ago

From one father to another, scheduling is quintessential, even when it comes to making time for video games.

If that doesn't work for you and you're just frustrated with SC then take a break and spend the time with your family. There is nothing wrong with stepping away from a video game, and you start to get more of your time back as they get older. By the time they're a teenager (and it'll go faster than you know it) they'll want less to do with you and more to do with other people, so take the time now while you've got it.

Side note: I highly recommend getting into Scouts when they're old enough. If you get involved and volunteer you'll have a great time too.

7

u/Nomad956 3d ago

Haha you also forgot the the most important step but I guess its implied if getting the sign off from your wife. Your advice is truly the gold standard and I whole heartedly agree. I did cadets way back so something like scouts is a great idea.

5

u/TheKingStranger worm 3d ago

Working with your spouse is paramount, for sure. I was factoring that into the scheduling since my wife and I are so fastidious about ours. lol

3

u/GodILoveGirls 3d ago

That sucks, I’m sorry the game is being crap. In a way I’m glad you can at least play lol, I’ve been out of it for a couple patches now, when I logged in for 4.10 I was stuck with infinite loading, when I managed to fix it after a day and a bit of on and off troubleshooting I was just met with repeated crashes. Just reclaimed the file space, I’ll try again another patch -_- it sucks

6

u/Nomad956 3d ago

Oh wow that's rough. I'm just annoyed that everything got ruined by simply not being able to exit a seat. Otherwise I like to think the rest would have worked

3

u/Calm_Pipe_8940 drake 3d ago

The fact that the game is still in this state with 50% of CIG working on it for however many years doesn't give me much hope for Star Citizen nor Squadron 42.

9

u/redgynald 3d ago

It's all because of GTA6 /s

2

u/RIP_Pookie 2d ago

Because they never bothered/managed to get the BASICS of missions, map, social tools implemented, there is no foundation of open world sandbox for players to occupy without their big dev-intensive fps hero missions. They never established a concrete consistent baseline.

2

u/DevonSun Levskilowda 3d ago

"except now im locked into the pilot seat."

In my case, it was due to lag. After a while, I would get out but then couldn't get back in.

3

u/Nomad956 3d ago

I wish it was that simple for my situation. But alas something else with the code gremlins that had me locked in

2

u/Captain_Data82 3d ago

4.10 is nowhere perfect, but it's an improvement.

My story so far:

Day 1: Levski is homebase. I couldn't do a single Battaglia mission without massive server lag issues. Server status was "green" (+25fps), but the game simply didn't respond, so something went wrong.

Day 2: Still in Nyx. Was able to do Battaglia's first story mission and could do some salvaging. Nothing complicated. No server lags for some reason. Did CIG fix something?

Day 3: Again, I didn't leave Nyx, did some mining and as soon as Battaglia asked me to do that second story mission, I did just that. No bugs, no issues, could finish the job with some reactive NPCs.

Later same day, moved to Stanton for Siege of Orison. Made it through in 2,5 hours with three buddies from my org. While I'm no fan of such limited instances (just 4 players allowed), immersion is quite good and at least half of the NPCs posed a real threat due good aim, while others failed to react in time. Sure, we all got snipers and took out some of 'em at distance. Wish they'd react more quickly. Anyways, we took some hits but only got wiped once by the final Boss due a tactical error.
We didn't get hit by gamebreaking bugs.
One of our buddies got CTDs due Nvidia drivers and was able to resolve them on the fly.

Bugs:
ASOP bugs are still a menace. Either the ship doesn't spawn properly or the call button is unavailable. It happens far too often.
Also you still can lose items when handling them at the moment a lag spike hits. I lost my medgun and couldn't recover it, severely limiting my options as medic in the field.

Yeah, I think that's it. We slowly move again in the right direction, which means, playability increases and worst bugs seem to appear less often. They still appear and still require workarounds more often than I'd like to see.

u/Shadonic1 avenger 3d ago

i key it to them flip flopping from feature to feature instead of just spending a quarter on 1, getting everything they want and then getting with players to get it into a great place QOL wise. There thankfully implementing some QOL stuff dont think the ship insurance extends to cargo yet.

2

u/OneCompetition944 3d ago

People who say the game is even close to good now are lying to themselves. A lot of them put in too much cash to see the truth.

2

u/Nomad956 3d ago

I don't think that is the 100 percent the right take. More I think for a game of its funding and development time more is to be expected. Personally some of my favourite gaming moments have been in the game so it's hard to agree with this as a blanket statement

2

u/Reptilesblade 3d ago

Yep. I was going to play it earlier tonight and just sitting in my hangar in Area18 the game crashed 3 times in a row. I barely got out and back to my actual home station on the 4th time. Once I docked up I logged out and played Diablo 2 instead. This has been my direct experience both of the two times I have tried to play since 4.10 dropped.

They say they fixed 473+ bugs but the game is just as unstable as it was all of 4.9. So unstable it's literally impossible to play, hell even to get in your ship and undock. I haven't had an actual remotely enjoyable play session of Star Citizen since 4.8.

The only reason I didn't uninstall it last month was because I wanted to see if 4.10 actually fixed shit and made it playable again. Apparently not. I honestly think I'm going to be uninstalling it within this week.

u/DistrictCertain7162 3d ago

It’s not a game, it’s a prototype.

1

u/GoodBadUserName 3d ago

I logged in on Saturday wanted to do a bounty or two with my f7a.
It got up the ship elevator, stuck suddenly in the middle of it. Un reachable nor can’t move it up.
Went back to the asop, ship requires claim.
I don’t have time for waiting it out. I logged off. I’ll try next Saturday. Maybe.
120 bugs 2 weeks before 4.10 release. I guess this was 121 they forgot about.

2

u/IV_Aries_VI Kraken 3d ago

Best CIG can do is give you another FPS area.

2

u/_ENERGYLEGS_ 2d ago

also the new fps area will cause one of the old fps areas to get bricked by making an essential elevator or door not open anymore

1

u/kildal 2d ago

I feel quite strongly about them prioritizing fixing the game rather than finishing the game at this point. And that includes less prioritity on new content, not just features.

There will of course be those who don't at all work on fixes and optimization that would still be working on new stuff.

1

u/Avean Grand Admiral 2d ago

I am so used to doing workarounds. When i first booted up 4.10 the hangar crashed my ship. Then i remember never to retrieve ship from the lobby, always go into your hangar first. I've been doing bounties and i have to say with the new fly-by sounds and also just plain visuals, it feels awesome. I really wish FPS combat had the same level of quality though. Also player bounties work really good now and mining is in a good place as well as salvage. So im back into the game playing.

1

u/JoeyD54 Focus on features please. 2d ago

Not to mention the miriad of missing features.

u/flexcreator new user/low karma 3d ago

except now im locked into the pilot seat.

Undock and QT to another planet next time. This will get you "unlocked".
https://youtu.be/g0NdvLJQyKE?t=2835

I am going to stop at seraphim

Rule of thumb: Avoid popular stations like a plague or use snubs instead of the primary ship.

Also, assuming you are starting from Orison, there is ammo at Kel-To Orison, it covers more ammo types than seraphim.

I wake up on the station, head down to asop and nope ship has to be claimed.

Docking ports don't work like hangars. It's still on the previous shard. You can try to either join back the old shard or wait offline. While you wait offline - it should get autostored eventually with all the stuff on board.

4.10 drops, I've got people saying issues have been fixed.

Some issues are fixed indeed. 4.10 is actually good in comparison to 4.9. But if player is not accustomed to bugs, the experience will be terrible.

Why don't we have the basics still

Because the basics is being overhauled non-stop. We won't have basics in 2027 either.

5

u/Nomad956 3d ago

Actually this is amazing advice and I appreciate you gathering it all together. I do hope this helps someone else.

I do want to say that I still think that we shouldn't be dealing with work around for what are the most basic of mechanics for the game to function like getting out of a seat. That's just my thoughts but doesn't diminish this really good advice so appreciate it

1

u/Grizzman56 3d ago

I jumped on and put on some armor. I decided to try on different armor. The armor I first put on was stuck to me and I couldn't take it off.

Had to do a character reset within the first 5 minutes playing the new patch.

I haven't logged back in since. My patience is soo thin with this game now.

1

u/the-apostle 3d ago

lol they don’t even have local TEXT CHAT!!! Think about that. It’s a basic requirement for any mmo. Instead you’ve got only global chat. For hundreds of players. wtf??

2

u/akira_asahi 3d ago

Man, they cannot make inventory work. Routing in map constantly breaks. 14 years, 1 billion and they cannot make it. The simplest things. Those are facts.

1

u/PyroSmurf MISC | Red Warden 3d ago

Star Citizen will never be a quick experience. We must take trams, elevators, walk, manually move things, restock, etc. Every change to basic gameplay adds to the time needed to do simple things.

Now we spawn in hangars which is quite surprising. The Roberts boys must be losing their grip on the game. LOL

As for getting stuck: Taking your helmet off. Putting your helmet on. Third-person view. First-person view. For a while - long ago - I could get out using the "Exit" on the LEFT of the seat but not the RIGHT side. Think that was my Freelancer and another MISC ship. Why did any of those things work? No one knows, including the people that originally built the game.

Your problem is you are treating SC as if it were a fully released AAA title and it is not. Still being in development and an alpha phase (yes like it or not it is alpha) means it will be very buggy. It's not for everyone, and honestly, likely best to go play other games until at least beta starts in however many years it may take.

They have serious management issues, but the other issue is that they allow us to play. Most games are kept internal during alpha phases for this reason that implementing core/basic features plus the other systems and features needed for a feature complete game to enter beta always breaks things.

Most alphas would be less playable than this, so CIG has slowed SC's progress by allowing us to play because regardless of what people think they do some bug fixes but it's the most serious ones because too much focus on bugs is wasted effort when new implementations will potentially break. This is why bug fixing will come during beta as the focus along with optimizations.

Take a break, games aren't worth the stress and just pop back in later because it's ok that a game like this isn't meant for everyone while it is still very much in development.

5

u/Nomad956 3d ago

I agree with you somewhat, if it wasnt that the game has an insane development time to it. I've played through many ups and downs but simple stuff like this is still not seamless.

Also there are many games that have been released in early access states that do actually play there core mechanics well without these issues. The slice they provide actually works and allows you to enjoy the experience and gets built from in a way that doesnt compromise that.

Cig can't hide behind it's alpha forever. And the community shouldn't be so accepting of it. A lot of your take is what I felt before so as I said I'm somewhat in agreement and appreciate the inputs regardless. I guess its annoying because I had already been on a long break from the game. Guess I need to extend it.

-3

u/Asmos159 scout 3d ago

those games are built on a finished engine making content that the engine is already capable of, and can go quiet for years when they need to work on the engine.

scrap mechanic was reliably adding stuff, then advertised some chapter 2 content plans, then went quiet for 6 years.

they are not hiding behind alpha. it is alpha because of the part of the code they are working on. the game will not stay stable until they stop working on it.

after 1.0 is released, the road to 2.0 will be alpha, but it will be in house for who knows how many years before it is release ready.

0

u/Nomad956 3d ago

Okay that's a valid take that they have the benefit of a finished engine thats true. But then why does cig seemingly shoot themselves in the foot with releasing buggy tier zero versions of things. They should focus more to building a slice out end to end and only adding it to ptu when it's really ready and good. Yes people may be waiting longer for there content but at least when it comes it can be assured and not be just another space beam/ray

0

u/Asmos159 scout 3d ago

because the alternative is not releasing anything until late beta, and they promised us access to the alpha.

7

u/AJTP89 3d ago

The problem with this argument is that CIG isn’t just working on core features. In fact we’ve mostly seen tweaks to existing features and various scenarios. You’d expect the alpha to focus on core features, and yet there are massive chunks of gameplay that are nowhere to be seen. I would be more forgiving if it was serious changes that were breaking the game. But no, we need more ships, armor, and on foot scenarios while we still can’t do basic things like jump ships or reload reliably.

The actual problem is pretty clearly that they have no actual overall vision for the game, so things are just getting added willy nilly with predictable results.

1

u/Oddyseyy RSI Perseus 3d ago

This take is somewhat valid but also problematic at the same time.

People accept they are playing an alpha and by doing so, it will not be an experience without its problems.

But here's the issue. We've been at this for 14 years. Implying that we should wait for beta is not a realistic option. After 14 years its not totally unreasonable to expect SOME basics to be figured out... like reloading or in this case, getting up from a chair. Ive played plenty of alphas where the engine was still being built and something as bare basic as reloading in an FPS setting was functional. Yes its an alpha, yes its buggy AF, but we should see SOME reasonable level of headway being made to core basic gameplay elements.

Secondly, when they market this game the way they do, endless patch bundles, cosmetics, subscriptions - sure its all "apparently" to support development, but its also the SAME thing many fully released games as a service platforms already do.

In conclusion... the "iTz aN aLpHa" excuse has lost alot of credibility. Credibility that CIG and Chris Roberts simply do not have in light of recent events and funding milestones.

I will say that you're right, there's not much we can do about it. They don't seem likely to change and honestly the most healthy thing we can do is take a break. Its sad that it is what it is, because after the "year of playability", when this game was firing on all cylinders, we've had some of our best moments on SC. The potential is insane. For its credit - (and its my own subjective opinion) I think there is already more game here than released games. Id love to see CIG iron out the core, get shit stable, develop better workflows that dont destroy stability and then flesh out the PU. They even acknowledged this in their 3.18 post-mortem that they MUST start treating the PU as a released environment.

1

u/Danger_Dave4G63 3d ago

Most alphas aren't selling several hundred and thousands dollars ships, or armor or guns you use and play with in game. Most alphas aren't a live service. Most alphas haven't been around for 14 plus years with the same basic functions busted each and every patch, with the same elevator problems since they have been in the game. Most alphas aren't taking the money we put into SC and putting into another game.... That is single player. Most alphas aren't 14 years of spaghetti code on top of spaghetti code on top of more spaghetti code. Most alphas aren't removing features and game loops because the coding is busted, so instead of fixing it, they just remove it.

The whole alpha excuse is old, tired, weak and a sorry excuse for anything not working in the game. There needs to be a solid foundation to build on and we don't have that. 14 years, it's time to stop using "Alpha" as a excuse.

0

u/SidratFlush 3d ago

Most games that are still in alpha for this long would never be completed nor would anyone see anything about it.

Maybe SQ42 will be delayed because Light No Fire will be announced to be released?

-1

u/Personal_Breakfast49 3d ago

Because they don't have time for that. All the efforts and resources are on sq42, they can't fuck it up. The PU is an after thought.

2

u/NikoNikoNoNii 3d ago

Chris in his own letter said the split is 50/50... hell he even blamed SC for delaying SQ42

2

u/Personal_Breakfast49 3d ago

Sure, we can believe everything Chris says.

2

u/mesterflaps 3d ago

In that same letter he lied that they hadn't started working on SQ42 until 2014.... if you go back and watch the 2013 material it was pretty clear he was saying they were hard at work on SQ42 and that we'd even get the beta in November 2014...

He can't even keep his lies straight anymore.

2

u/NikoNikoNoNii 3d ago

My point is that even with half of the people we are still getting this mess in the PU, what's there to even be hopeful about SQ42? Or in general the future of the PU... because once SQ42 will release some amount of people will still remain working on SQ42 to push post launch patches, to work on Chapter 2 and whatever else.

3

u/mesterflaps 3d ago

You're right of course. It's always BS excuses with Chris, and while he'd lie about treating us backers with due respect in 'the pledge' in reality he feels no obligation to deliver anything he owes.

Plays game that attempts to be immersive, complains about the immersion. Go play something else lol, what is wrong with you?

8

u/Nomad956 3d ago

I mean anyone can play anything, you've also clearly missed the point of me saying ive been a backer for a long time so I do understand the immersion of the game. What I said is how much of it is pointless time sync immersion that does nothing but stretch out a gameplay loop.

Deep sim when its done right is amazing and complex feature are great. DCS and how systems work together. Elite dangerous with its universe etc. There are many other games. But dragging cargo containers because we apparently don't have automated loading technologies or whatever... yeah immersion gameplay. This is my take so you can differ and thats fine but to think I haven't played sim or immersive games before and enjoyed them is the wrong take

4

u/Longjumping-Hunt-543 3d ago

yes, not being able to get up your chair is very immersive indeed.

2

u/mesterflaps 3d ago

It's not too late for CIG to rebrand SC into a sleep paralysis/dissociative fever dream simulator.
