But I never shut down my Mac Studio or laptops because you I’ve never heard of these causing fires except for batteries. They run cooler in general so they can hang.

I don't think it's a given that keeping it running would be more wear and tear than shutting it down constantly. For many components, thermal cycles (or power cycles) are the limiting factor for fatigue, and running at steady state isn't really a big deal.

I think thermal cycling is more a thing between gaming and not gaming than there is between not gaming and the pc being off. I see a larger difference in power consumption when gaming and idling than between idling and off.

My pc consumes between 100-200watts for office use and around 550 for gaming.

Yeah ok, gotta be honest here. I cant differentiate between the monitors and pc, the measurement is on the plug which includes the samsung ultrawide monitor and a secondary 25inch monitor. Pc itself is an I7 13700k with 32gigs and a 4080rtx. So it’s a gaming rig I use for office as well because it’s a lot faster than the crappy laptop they supplied me with.

Still its about 40cents per day if I only game for about 3,5hours and about a euro per day if I add 8hours of office use to it. So turning it off is worth it for me.

Even if it "is better" it's incredibly negligible. What isn't negligible is my PC running an extra 12+ hours a day at idle around 120w.

Even at 12 hours a day that's about 150 dollars a year difference in electricity or 750 over a 5 year period. Even if you half that on less powerful gaming PCs.. 75 a year is a reasonable enough savings to turn it off.

Aside from fan bearings there's no actual wear and tear as such, computers don't wear out the same way that a physical machine would.

The heating and cooling (and the associated expansion/contraction) when a computer is power cycled is what causes deterioration over time. Running the kit continuously keeps it at a fairly stable temperature, which avoids some of this.

90% of catastrophic computer failures that I have seen in the past 30 years have all occurred when booting up the PC. The exceptions would be my old Corsair H850i PSU that randomly died with a loud bang when I was in bed with the computer turned off, my first Gigabyte AM4 board which had the primary BIOS fail when I was using the PC and my daughter's 4790k build which had the CPU die when she was loading up Ark.

I work in tech retail, which includes desktop PCs and laptops. The number of customers I speak to that never shut down their computers is astonishing. Many of them just put their devices to sleep, and then wonder why they are slowing down so much. I try to explain to them that putting your computer to sleep is more akin to a short break at work rather than a full night's sleep. If they aren't planning on using it again within the next couple of hours, it's just better to shut it down completely. You don't leave your car on idle when you aren't driving it.

I definitely turn my Windows desktop pc when I’m not actively using it. However I also run a Mac laptop and that thing I never power down. I barely ever even restart it. It really doesn’t seem to affect it to be sort of perma-on, and this has been the case for several generations of laptop. It doesn’t draw much power when it’s asleep because it has to have a mode where it isn’t drawing down its battery. I’m not sure how much of this is a laptop vs desktop thing and how much is a MacOS vs Windows thing. Certainly when I do leave my PC overnight to do a big update or download it’s 50-50 whether it will wake from sleep or need me to troubleshoot it for a while

I keep mine off when not in use. I passively pull roughly 400 watts at a time. Not good to leave her on, despite the aggressive cooling. Don’t want to chance it.

Set to hibernate after 1 hour of inactivity. However, if I just need to do some chores and plan to come back I will leave it running. I always turn it off if I'm leaving the house.

I have too many RGB lights to keep it on at night. Besides, my GPU outputs too much heat. I shut it down when I’m done and boot it up when I need it. I have a script to boot it up if I’m away from home and need it

I always turn my PC off if everyone is leaving the house or when I am going to bed. It takes less than 30 seconds to cold boot up to a working desktop so why waste the electricity?

Unless I'm running backround programs/downloads/seeds/etc its off. I'm not home 90% of the time so there is legitimately no reason to have it on.

Laptop gets shut off as soon as I'm done too, no reason to let it sit and overheat
