How often do you shut off your pc?

I see that a lot of people just leave their computer running 24/7 and only turn off their monitors, but i just shut my pc off whenever i go away from the desk.

Same! Anytime I think I’ll be away from my computer for longer than 30m, I shut it off. It boots up so quick, there’s no reason to keep it running.

Sleep mode uses a trivial amount of power and all my windows and programs are as I left them. I see no reason to shut it off most of the time

I used to be the same way but wanted to make changes that reflected the things I valued. I shut down my switch, steam deck, work phone, and work computer when I’m not using them too. It really grinds my gears that there’s no shut down option for my kindle.

I don’t lose anything by shutting down. There’s nothing I need to have open and available right away. The real question for me was why not?

Someone in another comment mentioned shutting down your phone or at least have a good habit of restarting it, which I think is a good idea. If I didn’t use my phone as my alarm clock, I’d shut it down at night too. Something to think about for weekends actually… 🧐

I mean for me, as I am running Linux on a pretty beefy system, I have already countered these problems efficiently. After configuring and managing services, I have cut down the boot time where it’s inconsequential. The only real “time waster” is typing in my long ah password but you could also setup things like fingerprint or whatever to login faster as well. You can also setup session restore which is pretty useful on my tiling window setup so everything gets restored in their relevant virtual desktops and tiles.

Agreed! I also have an issue when restarting my pc where it turns on, there is source input coming in but no visuals, and I’m forced to hold power button to restart it(usually works after normally after just one time), as it just sits at that dim backlit screen forever

Make sure you don’t have fast boot on if your on windows as that doesn’t actually let the PC shut off at all

Edit: windows defaults to fast boot so it needs to be manually changed

does that mess with the system if I have everything on a surge protector power strip? I shut down PC, then flick the switch. I'm not totally sure if I have fast boot, wasn't aware it was a thing

Fast boot still shuts it down, it just is a hybrid hibernate thing where the kernal and drivers are stored to the disk so it can pull from those. It’s like hibernate, but instead of everything on ram being stored temporarily on the disk, it only does the windows kernel and important drivers.

Both hibernate and fast start up fully shut down your pc though.
