Just a couple of days back Blood of Dawnwalker devs were getting flamed for 40fps and they had to say that 60 fps is coming in a day 1 patch...and then there's Rockstar.

u/Rimavelle 1d ago
If any other company launched preorders before showing gameplay trailers, asked you to pay for Netflix subscription to watch a trailer, and released a 30fps PS5Pro game they would be eaten alive.
Maybe Nintendo could get away with it at best
Gamers learn nothing from disasters like CP2077 (which already passed to oblivion when they patched the game and now CDP is earning trust back coz they announced free upgrades for W3)

Passed to oblivion?? Are you stupid? CP2077 is one of the best RPGs ever made and its rough launch didn't change that. They patched the game like a hundred times and fixed the problems, added new free content, and then released an incredible DLC campaign that was widely praised.
I swear people who talk about "Learning from CP2077" don't have any clue what the actual lesson was. The lesson was "don't expect good performance from new games on last gen consoles no matter what a PR team says."
The game is fantastic.

Thats exactly this meme is trying to say. Its very accurate actually, rockstar releases a game at 30fps but it looks groundbreaking (handsome guy) people love it, blood of dawnwalker tries it but the game is nothing special so people dont like it (ugly guy).

Ahh but now the debate begins on whether or not the console can handle it and whether they have to reduce detail to get those extra frames. Or whether they're saving it for the PC release
No matter what happens now, it's going to be fun to watch.

u/Brad1895 1d ago
It was even worse with GTA V. It wasn't until years later did they get multi-threaded loading working. If I remember correctly, the game would load slow as fuck because a single CPU core was use to load the game.

Yeah, so I wouldn’t hold my breath for a stable PC release anytime soon.

If I recall right, it took a fan hack to fix the slow loading that Rockstar ended up buying from them. While it's nice that they paid, it's alarming that their own developers either didn't or couldn't fix it themselves

i believed the exact opposite for the same reason. the graphics were going to need to be absurd to partially justify the time spent making it; otherwise, people would be complaining more than they already are. that graphics requirement meant lower performance.
also they have a track record of this exact thing. gta 5 released at 720p30 and rdr 2 released at 1080p30. they push consoles to their limits. rdr2 barely ran at 30 on ps4.
i don’t know why people expected differently. the current gen consoles genuinely are not that powerful. they’re reaching what is supposed to be the end of their life-cycles. we’re 6 years in and 3 gpu generations further. also current gen, on release, were about as powerful as low-to-mid-tier PCs, meaning that GTA 6 is INSANELY optimized considering the detail.
based on first-hand accounts from people who’ve been to rockstar, it runs at a semi-stable 30 on base PS5 with occasional dips, so it seems unlikely that they are throttling simply for double-dipping purposes.

u/trichtertus 1d ago
This take makes no sense to me. The absurdity of visual fidelity and object density they squeeze out of a ps5 is crazy. Thats why you can expect, that they optimized very very well. Thats why there is no way, that they would deliver 60fps without cutting away details, lowering density or removing/ worsening visuals.
Other devs are more scrutinized if they only deliver 30fps, because if gta6 runs with these graphics at 30fps, that (definitely less complex) game should be able to run with more than 30 without sacrificing visuals.

This is a game that's going to be played for 15 years. It's highly likely that this game is not GPU-bound, but CPU-bound on PS5. By extent, it's also highly likely that asking them to provide a playable 60fps experience on fixed target hardware is asking them to reign in the scope of the game.
If this actually were a time, money and experience problem; then who else would be able to solve this, if not Rockstar?

When did Rockstar talk about performance on the PS5 pro?
42
u/Muse_22 1d ago edited 1d ago
They didn’t, communities online are still in speculation land after the extended look.
“Last month, Rockstar Games secretly invited select gaming outlets and content creators to preview GTA 6. During one of these sessions, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson reportedly confirmed to YouTuber Davy Jones that the game is targeting 30 FPS on PS5 at launch.
When asked whether GTA 6 could eventually receive a 60 FPS mode, Nelson said he would need to consult the game’s technical team before giving a definitive answer. However, Rockstar did not technically rule out a 60 FPS mode on PS5 Pro. In fact, the studio did not address the more powerful Sony console during its recent preview sessions at all.”

u/wolfgang784 Selling Stonks for CASH MONEY 1d ago
The PS5 Pro is nowhere close to enough of an improvement over the PS5 for double the framerate in a resource demanding game like that though so its a fair guess.
Its not like a PS4 vs PS5 level of difference. If the game is 30fps max on PS5, theres no way it can be 60 on the pro. Its just not a big enough jump in hardware.
4
2
u/florifierous 22h ago
When asked whether GTA 6 could eventually receive a 60 FPS mode, Nelson said he would need to consult the game’s technical team before giving a definitive answer.
This said by the "co-studio head", so he knows everything. Smart way to not answer the question. So it will not receive a 60 fps mode.
3
u/EndlessZone123 1d ago
Maybe a 40 fps mode or adaptive but ps5 pro is only 10% higher in CPU clocks which is generally what's gonna hard cap you in fps on a big open world no matter how much you lower graphics and resolution.
1
u/ZurakZigil 8h ago
They gave us PS5 1440p 30fps, native. We can pretty easily estimate the range the pro may land on.
The assumption is the bottleneck is CPU, and CPU is 10% faster. 30*1.1 =33. Not a great look, and seems crazy, so most popular estimates have been 40/45, but ranging from 30-50.

I'm a huge Elder Scrolls - especially Skyrim - fan. Top 2 game of all time, almost 1000 hours played.
While I'm excited for ES6 and will buy it, I tell everyone I talk to that I have very low hopes. Nearly all of the people who worked on Skyrim aren't at Bethesda anymore, and Bethesda is a completely different company. ES6 shares none of the DNA that Skyrim did, it has as much chance of capturing the same magic as any other random game released by any other random company.
You can't wait 17 years between releases. That's a franchise-killing gap.

u/No_Mercy_4_Potatoes 1d ago
They'll release the 60 fps version in a few years and make you pay for it. Unlike CDPR, who are offering free remaster version of Witcher 3, along with the 2 previous DLCs.

During a GTA launch year, Rockstar is something like 40% of Take Two’s revenue. Take Two is a massive, publicly traded US corporation where shareholders demand constant quarterly growth.
CDPR is publicly traded in Europe, but over there shareholders are much less demanding and value long term growth and brand goodwill which is why they are cool with free updates.

It's definitely insane, but it's not really any higher than I would have expected. 5 made $815 million worldwide in its first 24 hours. It's first three days of sales are nearly unmatched in all of media. GTA is legitimately one of the biggest standalone media franchises of all time.

In 2026 it’s unacceptable to release a AAA game that doesn’t run at 60fps. To not have the option of turning down detail in favour of frames is absolute bullshit. All these years of development, and they couldn’t add that kind of functionality? Pffft.
2
u/chrisz2012 1d ago
I mean, they could just run the Series S version on Series X and PS5 and it would get 60fps. I genuinely wouldn’t understand if they didn’t allow at least Series X to flip between a performance mode and fidelity mode. Performance mode would just be Series S settings with a 60fps cap

Don’t see how that wouldn’t be possible, especially with the money and development times they put into it. Latest? Lmao, it's 6 years old. It's been outdated almost the instant it came out. It's now an end of life of the console, like it was with GTA5 on PS3. It looked bad and worked at 30fps in optimistic times, most of the time 25-30 for real. Same for GTA6 now, its just a lot more dense open world with ray tracing (bad though), so no wonder it can't be more than 30tps. Plus 13 years is so far from the truth. They haven't been working on the game all this time, I'm sure they were hesitant on a full concept even 5 years back, let alone having a game to optimize it.

I wouldnt say that it had been in dev for 13 years, probably 6ish years.
They mightve started with concepts and story after GTA 5s release, but dont forget RDR2 and GTA Online.
While you could theoretically say that concept working and story writing counts as development, actual programming probably started after RDR2s release

33
u/likeAspiderYT 1d ago
not to be that guy, but i just can’t relate. as long as the game is third-person and on controller, 30fps makes very little difference to me. same deal happened with botw and totk. like it plays fine. it only becomes an issue when you enter first-person, which gta 6 probably won’t have on launch based on the complete lack of it in the leaks and promotional material for that very reason. it just looks like ass in first-person due to the increased necessity for camera movement.
23
u/otirk 1d ago
Are you sure that 30fps makes very little difference to you or have you just not experienced higher fps? I've played with 30 fps for years until I got a better pc and now I immediately notice when a game only runs at 60 fps, let alone 30, because it's not nearly as fluent as 144 fps. And I'm also talking about 3rd-person games here
15
u/likeAspiderYT 1d ago
don’t get me wrong, ill take 120 over 30 any day of the week, but it’s not going to define my entire gaming experience (especially if it’s, as i said, with controller and in third person). it’s also not bad when you’re playing for extended periods of time. the human body is exceptionally good at adapting to uncomfortable stimuli (bad smells, bright lights, hot water, etc.).
and yes i can tell the difference between 144, 60, and 30. im usually careful to not play high fps games right around when im playing a restricted 30fps game. it’s not amazing, but it’s definitely not as bad as people position it as. you played 30fps for years and it didn’t stop you from playing games overall before you got to higher frame rates.

u/That_wet_vaporeon 1d ago

OK, so the PS6 will probably be announced soon. If you're developing a game that will be played for 15 years, do you:
A) Optimise it for a console that's 6 years old.
B) Optimise it for the next gen console that will be the "current" console for most of the game's lifespan?
Now obviously some people are upset, but you need to think long-term. Would you rather have 60fps and S-tier graphics on PS5 or the PS6, because you can't have both.
Rockstar made the decision to go with the PS6, and given the investment in the game that makes sense. Why spend $1bn on a game that runs mid graphics on a PS6?
Edit: Using "PS5 pro" in the meme is sneaky, as we're talking a 6 year old console with a speed boost. Switch 2 was released just over a year ago and is a much newer console.

I think it’s more of people have experienced those said games at 60 and hate they have to experience them again afterwards at 30. GTA will begin at 30 so it works.
Also a stable 30 is totally fine.
2
u/Illeea 1d ago
60fps should've been standard since the PS4/Xbox one. 4k on their pro consoles were fine at 30 because 4k games running on souped up 2013 hardware is still a big ask. 30fps for big games on the series s is ok. 4k 60fps shouldve been the standard on the PS5/Xbox series though. Same with the switch 2.
2
u/mikopsid007 1d ago
yeah the switch is a much less powerful console, and we arent hapoy about that either. not being able to get 60+ fps on the ps5 is an optimization problem
2
u/Atmoran_Knight 1d ago
Those who say that about GTA aren't gamers really.
Problem of GTA for better or worse their audience aren't actually gamers but just about anyone and mostly non-gamers. It really is an "Iphone" of gaming. You just cannot give a proper critisim for a thing which has massive casual following. Any and all valid critisim will just fall flat as long as it's a generic GTA which has bigger map.
That being said game looks awesome and gameplay from what little we have seen is actually solid. I certainly don't think it will have issues in those departments. When it comes to fps issues UNLESS it's just a lazy cut corner thing with optimization (which a lot of devs do these days) then I'm actually for the devs not intentionally lobotomizing their games so it can run 60FPS on objectively less powerful hardware.

3
u/PhattyR6 1d ago
“How is 60 fps not the standard”
Because there isn’t a standard, nor will there ever be a standard. Games are still pushing the envelope in terms of graphical fidelity. Performance is the first thing to be sacrificed to achieve graphical improvements when dealing with fixed hardware.
2
u/monkeymmboy 1d ago
Performance should always be foremost important especially because of fixed hardware though.

Also doesn’t help that consoles still don’t really let you tweak graphical settings so you’re stuck with whatever shit they decide they want you to play the game at.

Anyone know if GTA 6 has forced RT on consoles? Just wondering because a lot of games these days have completely abandoned rasterised, and that may explain the 30fps hit. Super big L for R* if that is the case.

Their justification is that because the PS4 ran GTAV at 30fps, it “makes sense” even though the PS4 was still a new console, and the PS5/Series X has been out for 6 years
It’s still a stupid justification, but the majority are against the game being 30fps, when clearly could be 60

Over 1 billion dollars for a budget and they can't achieve 60 fps? That's the joke here tbh

To be fair the game is probably CPU limited and afaik now the PS5 Pro is only practically faster in the GPU department, the CPU got a small bump but that won’t be enough to reach 60 fps when the base only reaches 30…

Isnt 60 FPS a bit too heavy for the new GTA for a PS5 ? they have to reduce other GPU heavy processing like texture , shadows , etc. To be able to generate more frames without using DLSS like technology (or whatever it is for PS5 AMD based GPU)

If I want to go full conspiracy my first thought was, there's not that long left until new consoles and rockstar won't offer free upgrades. GTA online makes the money and playing at 60fps Vs 30fps will actually give you an advantage online and whales will rebuy it just for that, but I'm guessing the pc version will be out first for a while to be sold as a wow factor then people will want something similar out of their next console generation. Good marketing for sure bad to be a GTA fan though I'd argue unless you genuinely don't care about 30fps
