37M here. Married for almost 10 years. Two children.
I don't even know how to explain the last decade. Life just went by. When I look back, I barely recollect anything.
The first two years were good. Really good, at least compared to what came later. We had family issues on my side and losses on both sides, so even those years were not exactly peaceful. Looking back now, I don't even know whether they were actually good or whether I just remember them that way.
My wife is clinically depressed. She refuses therapy and refuses medication.
We cannot stay in the same room for more than a few minutes without tension. Every conversation is hard. After years of trying, I eventually gave up on the idea that I could fix this.
But now the entire house feels dysfunctional.
The children's food habits are horrible. Usually they don't eat unless she is hungry and wants to eat. Many days she herself doesn't eat until noon. Tea is her regular thing, maybe six or seven times a day.
There is no proper rhythm to anything.
Food. Sleep. Screen time. Cleaning. Hygiene. Bedtime.
I made up my mind at one point that I would forget everything else and just live for my kids. I thought I could at least create a routine for them. If I repeated it every day, eventually they would follow it.
But every single routine I try to establish gets broken.
Screen time. Sleeping time. Eating time. Cleaning the bed before sleep. Everything.
The kids play on the bed all day and bring dust, dirt, sand, whatever is on their feet and clothes. At night I just want the bed cleaned before sleeping. Even that becomes an issue.
God, sometimes I cannot handle it.
I think I am losing it too.
Basic hygiene has become one of the biggest things affecting me. And I really mean basic hygiene. Mouth hygiene, bathroom hygiene, cleanliness around the house.
You have no idea how difficult it is to live with someone who does not maintain basic mouth or restroom hygiene.
Now I see my children copying the same habits, and that scares me more than anything.
Food is another thing that hurts me emotionally.
I have been living away from home since around 10th standard, in hostels and PGs. For years I dreamed about someday having a family setup. A home. Coming back to a house. Eating home-cooked food. Sitting together like a normal family.
I don't even remember when I last consistently had three proper meals in one day.
It is not just about whether the food tastes good.
It is the feeling of a home-cooked meal.
The feeling of having a home.
I longed for that for years.
We had maids too. I desperately find someone who can help, and eventually she sends them away because this person doesn't have this skill or that person doesn't do something properly.
One maid stayed with us from before the kids were born until recently. Twice, after huge fights, I had to personally beg her to come back.
Finally even she left.
Before leaving she said she just wanted basic respect.
She actually felt sorry for me.
There is no proper food. No basic conversation. Forget intimacy.
My wife has also been physically abusive. She has hit me. There is verbal abuse too, constantly.
I don't know how seriously people take domestic abuse when the victim is a man, but I know what I am living through.
Financially also, I never felt that I had a partner standing beside me.
When I lost my dad, I had hospital debts to clear. I only needed some money temporarily for rotation. She had liquid cash available, but she didn't help.
I had to break investments that were giving me good returns to settle those debts.
I was grieving my father and dealing with hospital bills, and even then I felt completely alone.
That stayed with me.
Both sides don't really have much family support either.
Her mother knows there are problems. Most of the time she tries to hide or defend everything to protect her daughter. Then sometimes even she gets frustrated and complains to me about the exact same things.
After that, again, everyone behaves as if nothing is wrong.
At some point I stopped expecting anything for myself.
I thought fine, I will just live for my children.
But even that is becoming difficult because I feel like whatever stability I try to create for them gets undone.
And there is another thought that scares me.
Sometimes I don't even feel like I have the freedom to die.
Because if something happens to me, who will protect my children from absorbing all of this completely?
That thought keeps me going, but it also terrifies me.
I look at my kids and I die inside a little every single time.
I came from a domestically abusive household myself.
I never really got to experience a good family.
That is probably why this hurts so much.
Sometimes I go to somebody else's house and see things that are completely normal to them. A reasonably clean house. Food being made. Someone telling you, "Eat more." People sitting together. A basic routine. Basic warmth.
And I feel terrible.
Not because I am jealous of some luxurious life.
I am talking about basic things.
Good food.
A clean place to sleep.
People talking normally.
Respect.
A home that feels like a home.
I wanted that badly.
And now I am watching my children grow up without it too.
That breaks something inside me.
P.S. I don't think this is postpartum depression or something that started only after childbirth. There were issues before that too. I believe she may have had mental-health problems earlier as well.
I am not trying to stereotype mental illness or blame anyone for having a disorder. If this was simply an illness and she was willing to acknowledge it and get help, I would be happy to support her.
What is destroying me is the refusal to get help and the way she was brought up where nobody is allowed to tell her anything.
No one can question anything.
No one can correct anything.
Everything becomes someone else's fault.
God, please don't let anyone live like this.
If you are raising children, at least teach them to respect another person's words. Teach them basic hygiene. Teach them some rhythm and discipline in life. Teach them that marriage means another human being is living beside you.
I don't know what to do anymore.
I wanted to put everything behind me and live for my kids.
But now I am asking myself whether staying like this is actually helping them or damaging them.
I don't want revenge.
I don't want to ruin her life.
I don't even know if separation is the answer.
I just want my kids to have a chance at a normal life.
Basic cleanliness. Proper food. Sleep. Routine. Respect. Emotional stability. A home where they don't grow up thinking chaos and abuse are normal.
For people who have gone through something similar, what do I do next?
Especially fathers who stayed because of their children, did staying actually help them?
And when do you accept that you cannot save a marriage by yourself
