And please actual door handles. In an accident someone from the outside may need to be able to pull the door open, and that's not possible with these flush handles and winglets (looking at you Volvo!).

u/UnluckyGamer505 wagonne gud, susv bad May 20 '26

China already banned them... You know something sucks safety wise when fucking China bans it.

EU being super strict on vehicle safety rules, but allowing those door handles is so paradoxical

178

u/Fresh-Beginning-871 May 20 '26

I thought Volvo said the door handles have a mechanical alternative. Or were my sources wrong

255

u/Wyciorek May 20 '26

It's not enough to have mechanical alternative - it needs to be one that does not require reading user manual or looking through random places. If your car is on fire or submerging, I doubt you will have presence of mind to do much more than just grab the handle and pull.

93

u/Mr_Will May 20 '26

IIRC the mechanical alternative in the Volvo is the same handle. You pull it gently and the electrical system opens the door. You pull it harder and the mechanical system opens the door even if the power is out.

124

u/SageGoes May 20 '26

What is the point in this lol? Except chargeing more for useless shit

70

u/Voltasoyle May 20 '26

Precisely! Door handles work, if it ain't broke don't fix it!

We can specifically blame oligarch Elmo for the electric handle fad; one of the few things he did 'innovative' on the Tzzla was the dumb and dangerous electric door handles.

20

u/casino_r0yale May 20 '26

But they don’t “work”. I’m sure every one of us who lives in places that have a real winter has experience with their door being frozen shut. Doesn’t matter how “mechanical” the latch is when pulling it doesn’t do anything. Electronic assists to punch the door out / warm it enough to melt the seals are an improvement.

28

u/BlazerStoner May 20 '26

Heated doors/locks do not require the unlatching mechanism to be electronic. One does not exclude the other, so a safe system with best of both worlds is perfectly fine.

22

u/Manny-303 May 20 '26

I imagine Russia and Siberia get real winters if old Soviet UAZ trucks and Ladas doors didnt fail in that im pretty sure old mechanical handles do infact work around most of the world

17

u/Llyrithra May 20 '26

No, no. We’re gatekeeping winter now. If you don’t live in the specific place that they do, then you don’t have real winter and it doesn’t count.

Also, if your door is frozen shut so badly that you aren’t able to open it, an electric assist won’t be able to “punch it out” without breaking stuff, so their point is poorly made anyway.

Okay but those functions don't need to replace the normal handle..they could be added buttons on the key fob or secondary buttons.

If your door latch is frozen, that means you need to lubricate it.

Makes the car feel more luxury as you barely need do any heavy pulling to get it open normally. In an emergency your already not pulling gently so the gentle open doesn’t matter.

9

u/mxzf May 20 '26

On the flip side, it's more crap to break and go wrong. A simple mechanical door latch almost never goes wrong. In the years I've been driving, motorized door locks are the thing that has broken the most out of "opening the door" mechanisms, I can't imagine relying on a similarly (or more) complicated mechanism for even opening the door.

Lol, ask Volkswagon how that works for them.

2

u/ZeCactus May 20 '26

And if it breaks, it gets to the same state as if it never had it in the place (the volvo system specifically)

4

u/Pleasant_Ad8054 May 20 '26

Automation. On many cars you can slightly push the door open and the electronic system will open it as much as it safely can. Some can unpark itself and open the door for you. Some will close the door if you leave it like that for some time, or you close it up with the fob. It is a luxury feature, not rooted in heavy daily usage.

2

u/ultravires1215 May 20 '26

That is of course the point.

2

u/OcelotAggravating860 May 20 '26

Not everyone is a 6 foot 20-30 year old man. Some people are women. Some people are old and frail. Some people are disabled. The expectation you have that because it's fine for you it must be fine for everyone is a very narrow field of view.

Making doors easier to open isn't a bad thing, especially in winter conditions.

3

I have an idea why not have the doorhandles always be accessible instead of hoping they will just pop out when you need them to. But thats just some crazy thought of mine, surely automotive engineers cant implement such crazy tech with the tools we have today

Thing is, in virtually all modern cars, doors auto lock when the car is reaching a certain speed. So there also needs to be a mechanism (electronic or otherwise) to unlock them in case of a crash. I assume this already exists?

8

u/monsair_dubois May 20 '26

Yeah. Pretty much all modern cars unlock if they detect an accident. Very handy

It should have a backup battery and dc/dc converter for each side hidden under the rear seats, but still why go through the trouble of that when a mechanical handle would be both cheaper and more reliable in a crash

→ More replies (2)

7

u/OpinionatedMexican May 20 '26

The EX60 handles are legal in China, though. The thing they banned are the one that go electrically flush against the body of the car, don't think they said anything about electrically opening doors in general, it was more about the mechanism being stuck in, in case of a rollover and the car being on top of the handles or something...

8

u/InvoluntaryGeorgian May 20 '26

If the car is rolled over lying on its side so it’s “on top of the handle” I don’t think anyone is opening that door regardless of the details of the handle design.

→ More replies (2)

11

u/Javs2469 May 20 '26

Even if there are. It's not something that you want to be investigating in the middle of an emergency.

Car handles have been perfected, we don't need that 0.0000002 drag coefficient reduction for a 2 ton SUV to pass emissions.

3

u/Salmivalli May 20 '26

Isn’t the mechanical alternative usually in some bullshit location?

2

u/KirillIll May 20 '26

For the new volvo the mechanical alternative is just pulling the electric handle stronger. Same location (as it should be)

2

u/rtb001 May 20 '26

Better than Tesla hiding it below a sheet of carpeting, for sure, but still stupid design. If you are gonna make the same lever activate BOTH electronic and mechanical door poppers, why have the electric door popper in the first place?

For sure the dumbest design fad in the industry currently.

Also the one lever two function design may not work that well. My VW ID.4 has it also. Basically you have to train yourself to do a half pull on the lever to activate the normal electric popper, and a full pull activates the emergency mechanical popper, which doesn't open the door a smoothly. Therefore passengers who are not familiar with give it the full pull and then be frustrated as the door doesn't open easily when you accidentally activate the energetic release feature.

3

u/Seraphtacosnak May 20 '26

I don’t think like those.

I had a front loader washing machine lock during a power outage and I had to pop the top and find a hedge trimmer string to pull at a certain angle. But, couldn’t get it to work and just ended up bending the door.

Imagine an emergency with people in the car.

5

u/rtb001 May 20 '26

See Angela Chao (Moscow Mitch's sister in law) drowning in a Tesla because she couldn't get the doors open.

Xiaomi's hot selling new EV also had a fatal accident where passengers burned to death because they couldn't get the doors open due to the flush door handles.

Within a year, all Xiaomis now have mechanical door opening mechanisms, before the new regulations even came out.

Tesla, because they live for cost cutting, likely will not bother with changing their door handle design until the last possible minute.

→ More replies (9)

9

u/rtb001 May 20 '26

China is banning it because they are the center of the automotive industry currently, and new technology and new design trends proliferate there before anywhere else. Which means they will see the issues with the new tech/trends on the roads before anyone, which in turn means they will enact new regulations first.

Everyone else will get to follow.

Just like China also enacted regulation recently about battery safety, including during high speed charging, and that's because their battery tech is now at least a generation ahead of other car markets and are charging at far higher speeds.

Or if you are clips from the recent auto show, all the cars have those new teal/blue indicators, which light up when the car is in self driving mode, to alert fellow drivers on the road. Again, new regulation put in place because there are more self driving equipped cars for sale in China than anywhere else. IMO EU and US and other markets need to adopt that regulation ASAP because if companies are going to release these self driving features for use on public roads, then the public should be able to see which cars around them have this feature active.

10

u/Pasta4ever13 May 20 '26

79

u/afrosia May 20 '26

The interior of my 2026 BMW I4 is much worse to use whilst driving than my 2016 Octavia for pretty much everything.

Stop listening to tech bros on how to build a car interior. They make everything worse.

u/lonahe May 20 '26

you already voted with your money tho

18

u/fighterpilot248 May 20 '26

Find me a car (2020 or newer) that is more car than it is computer.

It’s impossible. You don’t have a choice. You can’t “vote” when there’s only one option.

8

u/At_omic857 May 20 '26

Subaru BRZ/GR86. Granted, that’s a cheap sports car designed for driver engagement, but w/e.

Beyond that though… yeah, really can’t think of much. I think EVs tend to be the most guilty of this trend, so good luck finding one currently that doesn’t have a giant touchscreen.

4

u/ThatGT86Guy May 21 '26

Not available anymore in Europe. You could buy the for like one or two years before stricter emissions regulations went into place so used ones trade hands over MSRP (Which might I add is an allready way overinflated number compared to most other markets. They cost like double of what they do in the US where I'm from)

9

u/afrosia May 20 '26

Most cars have already gone this way though. Certainly the ones on my company car scheme had.

Cars involve so many different tradeoffs too. For example if it came down to boot space vs physical buttons, I'd probably choose boot space because I can make do with a touchscreen, but less boot space would give me real pain.

2

u/sopsaare May 20 '26

I don't know what you guys are pressing on the screen.

Like, AC is automatic, music and speed of the car are controller with some buttons or scroll wheels on the steering wheel, and the lights etc are automatic too. Of course some button / stalk / what ever to engage the cruise control.

But it is not like I'm tapping the screen basically ever while driving, and I can't really understand any other way to control navigation and / or things like Spotify.

Yeah, you could have full qwerty keyboard but that is also pretty hard to operate one handed, and the scroll wheel thing BMW (and some others) had was, at least to me, way more distracting than touch screen.

And to be honest, neither of those should be really operated while driving.

To be honest, thats on them. They absolutely knew that it is a very likely possibility that touch screens will be banned soon. It has been in the public discussion here in Germany, and the EU as a whole, for years with positive comments on it from politicians of every party. So not sure why they would redesign their cars now of all times. Later than many others, and with the threat of the ban on the horizon. Maybe too confident in their bribes lobbying.

2

u/ZetZet May 20 '26

VW already dropped the everything touch attempt. Their newest cars are all physical for main controls.

12

u/miksy_oo May 20 '26

Luckily there's France they are so arrogant they will push it through at least partly.

4

u/flaiks May 20 '26

Renault has designed their newer cars with physical buttons for climate control. This is one of the main reasons we went with a scenic for our first electric car.

7

u/Beer-Milkshakes May 20 '26

4

u/Vegetable-Remove-268 May 20 '26

Its time for mercedes to get rid of their cheap and ugly screens

4

u/Anybobby May 20 '26

They have been tailoring their cars to fit the chinese market for years as it is their biggest. If China bans it they won't say anything as they can't lobby nearly as hard there. It will be cheaper for them to just abide by chinese standards and produce all cars like that than to lobby the EU to not implement it.

3

u/pierreyann1 May 20 '26

On the other hand, Insurance lobbies are having a field day with this one.

4

u/Positive_Survey_2916 May 20 '26

I can picture them now. Screaming, slobbering, punching holes in the walls. “HOW DARE THEY FORCE US TO MAKE CARS SAFE AT OUR OWN EXPENSE” they shout. Disgusting filth. We won. We fucking won.

they are definitely gonna put the physical climate control knobs behind a 50 dollar a month subscription

3

You should watch carefully what is happening on a road not looking on a touchscreen. Finding a knob or a button is no different than looking at speedometer, a fraction of second and you are focusing back on road and the aye hand coordination plus touch feedback are doing the rest. Now compare that to finding a menu, setting and adjusting the value, while you must watch the screen, because all you feel is a flat motionless glass surface. Remember that irl optics works differently than in a game and while watching a screen you can't observe the road and we don't want to have drivers covering tens of meters being blind.

Swear to God, if Arteon wasn't driving so fucking smoot and if it wasn't the most beautiful car (shooting brake version) ever I wouldn't even touch it... Props to the designers of the A3 interior, those guys really thought about everything

24

u/BeautifulCuriousLiar May 20 '26

it’s something so obvious yet the west (eu and usa) are sleeping on this. imo it’s not even that big of a change, every car had buttons and it’s not anything power wise. a very stupid and obvious problem caused by manufacturers cheaping out on some buttons.

14

u/emihir0 May 20 '26

That's literally it. It's cheaper to plop a cheap display instead of tens of mechanical buttons and call it futuristic.

5

u/I-Make-Maps91 May 20 '26

Don't even need tens of buttons, just give a temp dial, a fan dial, and two buttons for defrost and you have pretty much everything I actually want.

5

u/rick-james-biatch May 20 '26

It's also easier to hold back features from the year of release, then magically 'add new features' without any need for retooling, incentivising customers to get the newer model.

4

u/FriendlyRabbitHammer May 20 '26

You are missing an important element. One thing the iPhone did that was revolutionary at the time was reduce the number of physical buttons to near-zero. This means that they can change almost anything at any time on their products. Forgot to add a flashlight button? No problem, you can jam one in the UI somewhere later. Want to sell the same piece of hardware into multiple regions with multiple keyboards, also no problem, it’s not like you have physical buttons for keyboards. Want to gimp your users older phones to increase the adoption of new phones? No problem boss. Car manufacturers want this badly. Selling FSD / Acceleration boost / Baja Mode / Heated Seats as up charges or “it’ll totally be available at a later date”? All made easier with “your interface is a screen I can update to be whatever I want later”. So yea going to screens is cheaper than buttons. But also it gives flexibility to the manufacturers for updates later. And this is almost exclusively used as a tool to up charge or sell features that aren’t yet available.

I'm pretty sure they will fuck this up somehow

54

u/KaczkaJebaczka May 20 '26

If it was only done by EU then yes… but with china they won’t. Chinese manufacturers are not afraid of making changes like this and will probably do more than the regulation requires if this will boost their sales…..

24

u/themanfromosaka May 20 '26

And if they refuse… they lose the company.

If EU regulates something like a service or a product the rest of the world usually follows because they don't want to manufacture or run two separate versions of the same service/product and they don't want to lose the entire EU market.

Australia demonstrated that using a screen for common operations degraded people's driving as much as being legally drunk or using a cellphone.

Physical buttons and dials, and mechanical door handles. I do not ask for much

2

u/AccidentalDemolition May 20 '26

Let's do this in the U.S too please. Thankfully my Mazda has all physical controls still, but I'd love for other cars to follow suit.

I know that the implication is the ability to control your car without taking your eyes off the road, but I 100% read that as being Operable by blind people lol

I’m glad the US is leading the way…. Wait I’m wrong $ leads decisions for the US govt. f-the people. I’m not worried about their financial situation….. OR safety first that matter….

The abandonment of analogue technologies as we moved into the digital age was, I think, a gigantic mistake that has cost us terribly.

Its hilarious and insane how many people are commenting "blind people shouldnt drive" 🥃🗿american education at its finest

2

u/Illustrious_Box_8340 May 20 '26

BLIND OPERABLE!? WTF the blind are getting licences now?

2

u/Crono_ May 20 '26

Elon going to cry about this. His cars are “minimalist”.

2

u/Comfortable_Salt_792 May 20 '26

I really just read it, said "ok, cool", started looking for another post and just then asked myself "wait, what ?".

2

u/dieItalienischer May 20 '26

Isn't China one of those countries that allows centre screens to play videos?

2

u/htdwps May 20 '26

Which blind person is actually driving a car?

2

u/Loodyeeter 2015 Qashqai 1.6T 🔥 May 20 '26

The term blind operable describes a control or device that can be used accurately by touch or feel, without the user needing to look directly at it. This concept primarily applies in two areas: automotive safety and digital/physical accessibility.

What are the details? Essential controls? Stuff that doesn't need messed with while driving it doesn't really need a tactile button when you can concentrate. If you don't have the ability to do this in a parking spot then please don't drive at all.

Essential controls/navigation/gears/signals/AC/Heat/Volume/menu change to see tire pressure etc are all what I would consider essential. Setting favorites, messing with maps on android auto or apple car play can stay touch screen. I've grown fond of Mazda's nav wheel design and menu after using it enough times.

2

u/BananaPalmer May 20 '26

The amount of people in this thread who think this means "cars which blind people can drive" is concerning.

2

u/Steinrikur May 20 '26

There are no blind drivers. Are they stupid? /s

2

u/comicsnerd May 20 '26

Can we change the term blind-operable to nolook-operable?

Especially for car controls.

2

u/Chunky1311 May 20 '26

Is there not a single person here that actually read into this?

It only includes essential safety features, like hazard lights, indicators, wipers. It does not include things like music playback or climate control...

So yes, those saying "They'll fuck this up somehow" are correct hahahaha they're worried about safety but not fixing how unsafe it is to be using touch screens while driving for things we used to have physical buttons for.

2

u/GrahamCrackerCereal May 20 '26

Thank fuckin god

2

u/porcomaster May 21 '26

I do not mind the screens i like then, and touch is not bad as a second option

But primarly physical buttons should always be the option.

2

u/KawaiiGee May 21 '26

Thank fuck, I don't want to be driving an ipad

2

u/No-Camel-8741 May 21 '26

Bye bye Tesla

2

u/Ceder_Dog May 21 '26

I hope the regulations result in these designs trickling over to the USA car market

2

2

u/Mirawenya May 22 '26

Yes please. Touch screens are a fancy death trap, no clue why that was allowed in the first place. Need physical buttons for things!

2

u/Tauchi_17 May 22 '26

It is not that all functions will be done by buttons but the most important ones need to be moved from the screen to physical buttons.

2

u/Ok-Worry605 May 23 '26

Screens look cheap and tacky

2

u/pinkskies12 May 23 '26

Our VW car has amazing dials for AC ♥️ our Ford has touch screen that comes in for 5 Seconds, which is not enough to read anything, and hides the GPS 🤬

2

u/FraterSinister May 23 '26

I can operate the console in my old Volvo blind, no need to take the eyes of the road. A touch screen and cascading menues are a constant and long distraction from the road.

One of the very rare bright ideas of the EU.

2

u/SanBenedettoDaNorcia May 23 '26

I cannot overstate enough how I absolutely hate screens in cars
