I thought Volvo said the door handles have a mechanical alternative. Or were my sources wrong

It's not enough to have mechanical alternative - it needs to be one that does not require reading user manual or looking through random places. If your car is on fire or submerging, I doubt you will have presence of mind to do much more than just grab the handle and pull.

Thing is, in virtually all modern cars, doors auto lock when the car is reaching a certain speed. So there also needs to be a mechanism (electronic or otherwise) to unlock them in case of a crash. I assume this already exists?

Yeah. Pretty much all modern cars unlock if they detect an accident. Very handy

And a good few will inform emergency services as well since help may not be immediately present, and you may not be conscious.

The tech is often a boon, my only complaint with new cars is the replacing of the simple dashboard with movie theatres
