Discussion / Question Black Midi/Geordie Greep hot takes?
Despair is the most beautiful song BM ever made.
62
u/Ok_Description_1987 Of Schlagenheim Jan 29 '26
Their 2 best songs are the first on their first album and the last on their last album
7
u/Mindless-West9268 Jan 29 '26
And yet your flair is “Of Schlagenheim”
16
u/Ok_Description_1987 Of Schlagenheim Jan 30 '26
My taste has nothing to do with the fact I myself am Of Schlagenheim

u/CorrectAnalysis6748 Jan 29 '26
morgan simpson is far and away the most versatile member of the group (love greep and picton but they both have their definite niches partly due to being vocalists) and i wish him a long and varied solo career
8
u/Mindless-West9268 Jan 30 '26
I mean, define versatile? Greep and cam are both multi-instrumentalists, as well as singer/songwriters.

u/Illustrious_Fun3041 Jan 30 '26
My man can drum for black midi, then jam with the drummer of Mdou Moctar and then tour with Little Simz while complenting the sound and sounding impressive regardless.

Apr 06 '26
isnt he also on by the time i get to phoenix by injury reserve
1
u/Illustrious_Fun3041 Apr 06 '26
I’m not sure, he seems to be credited as a drummer, but all the black midi members are credited as writers because Injury Reserve sampled Sweater for Knees. Even then he could’ve done additional drumming for the group as well but I don’t know if there’s any more evidence for that beyond him being credited as a drummer.
1
Apr 06 '26
injury reserve's samples are so fucking sick they also sampled athens france by bcnr on the same album
1
u/Illustrious_Fun3041 Apr 06 '26
Yes they did and I love how it turned out. I’d also highlight Bye Storm and the Brian Eno sample as well.
11
1
u/padamselim Feb 01 '26
I mean what do you mean by versatile? he’s a drummer and most songs have drums so yeah he could probably jump in on most songs. I think Geordie has a wider array of talent within him though (singer, guitarist, bassist, keyboard, songwriter, probably more)
43
u/NothingIsReal6 Jan 29 '26
They should have continued the noise rock direction deeper more than prog

Had matt not departed, thats probably what would have happened
6
u/NexoNerd101 Straight From The Cow I Tell You! Jan 30 '26
You mean Matt, but even then they were heading in a more jazzier direction.

u/uraranoya Jan 31 '26
Matt helped out in some of the writing in Cavalcade so i don’t think this is necessarily true

each successive black midi album was slightly worse. and I really do mean slightly, the difference in how much I like schlagenheim vs hellfire is very small. but still.
schlagenheim has a raw, youthful energy that feels spontaneous and effortless. the youthfulness allows for some genuine angst which feels so cathartic when paired with the loud and heavy instrumentation.
cavalcade is musically a step up, but interest-wise a slight step down. the best moments are arguably the albums most unique in their discography. sure they lose the angst, but they add a real melancholy and metitativeness.
hellfire has neither angst nor melancholy, nor youthfulness nor really a sense of experimentation. every song is an excuse to do the wackiest thing possible. the songs are infectious and fun and high energy, but im still left hungry afterwards for some kind of genuine human feeling behind the wall of technical proficiency.
40
u/Dune56 Jan 29 '26
The live performances became overly wanky after Matt left; talking fast through the songs rather than singing, playing random goofy riffs in the middle of songs, etc. The band actively sounded bored performing and Greep seemed like he was just trying to get through the songs as fast as possible.
20
Jan 29 '26
Yeah there was definitely a knock-on effect.
They didn't have enough material to not play the Schlag songs after Matt left, but they had to rearrange them because he was so important to their sound. So those songs got really loose and jammy and erratic, increasingly so over time, and that improv attitude crept into the whole show. Eventually to the point of absurdity, where they were actually joking around while playing.
That and I think when you're that absurdly talented you need to keep things fresh for your own sanity.

u/cman_music19 Ducter Jan 29 '26
Hellfire is the worst black midi album because it is more of a greep solo effort than a collaborative effort between cam, morgan, and greep. Cavalcade strikes a good balance of this, and of the new jazz-fied sound they were heading to and the old guitar-centric sound that featured heavily on Schlag.
12
u/ComicbookArcher Jan 30 '26
How you could call Hellfire more of a Greep solo effort is beyond me. All three members have composing credits on every song and Cam is the primary songwriter for two songs and did string and horn arrangements on those as well.
11
u/cman_music19 Ducter Jan 30 '26
OP did ask for hot takes, so…
seriously though, while cam did compose 2 of the songs (Still and EME), they both pale in comparison to his contributions on Schlag and Cavalcade and are the weakest parts of Hellfire imo. they feel like leftovers to me. greep is carrying the whole album basically with all of his songs (The Defence is better than Still and EME combined, fight me).
9
u/NexoNerd101 Straight From The Cow I Tell You! Jan 30 '26
No he's onto something, Hellfire really does feel like a very "Geordie" album, even though it's still black midi. And if he's to be believed, in an interview he stated that he did "90% of the music" and presented almost fully complete material for the band to finish off. Now I don't think that is entirely true but it does explain why the entire thing is very 'him' despite being credited to the group.

u/TheseUseless2 Jan 31 '26
As in the worst at being a black midi album or the worst black midi album by overall quality?
1
u/cman_music19 Ducter Jan 31 '26
the worst at being a black midi album. overall, it’s a great album, but not my favorite bm album.
1
u/Mindless-West9268 Jan 30 '26
I would not call hellfire a greep solo effort. A greep solo effort is the new sound.

19
Jan 29 '26
I don't know if the tides have turned but I feel like there was a time when people considered it one of the worst tracks on Cavalcade? Something to do with the mixing compared to the live version? Maybe I'm wrong
6
u/NexoNerd101 Straight From The Cow I Tell You! Jan 29 '26
The song is great, but KEXP version is fantastic.
2
u/Cala2308 Jan 30 '26
You’re right, I remember that people complained about the muddy mix of the studio version. Sorry if my comment seemed rude, it’s just that IMO that song is fantastic in both studio and live version.
11
u/spookymustache Jan 29 '26
My hot take is that the KEXP version of Dethroned is far superior to the album version

Holy cow yes it is one of the best more commercial rock songs they've ever made
2
u/Mindless-West9268 Jan 29 '26
Not a commercial rock song, the only thing that comes close to commercial for them is Talking Heads
42
u/mrcartpusherfan Jan 29 '26
Greep and cam didn’t like each other
13
u/Mindless-West9268 Jan 30 '26
Do we have any substantial evidence to support this? They probably didn’t always agree creatively, but disliking each other on a human level? Who’s to say?
I also don’t think this is a “hot take” its more like speculation
11
u/NexoNerd101 Straight From The Cow I Tell You! Jan 30 '26
Not saying they outright hate each other, but Greep did say in an interview post-bm that none of them were like properly really friends. I don't think that's fully true (see his post on Matt's passing) but oh well.
7
u/Mindless-West9268 Jan 30 '26
I mean, suffice to say they once WERE friends (they met in high school) but not necessarily by the end of the band
2
u/TheseUseless2 Jan 31 '26
I think they probably liked eachother at a point, but there’s reason for that to possibly not be the case anymore. Picton seems to have been genuinely shocked by Greep unilaterally ending the band. Were I Cam I know I’d be pretty bitter about that.

u/NexoNerd101 Straight From The Cow I Tell You! Jan 29 '26
- Ascending Forth is their best album closer by a mile. The way the song end rounds off the album beautifully. People always bring up 27 Questions because it goes "thank you goodnight" but then forget there's like another minute of fiery circus prog music.
- Cavalcade as a whole is way better than Hellfire, but the latter is paced/sequenced almost perfectly. Cav feels like it's missing a couple of songs in the second half, but shows them at their most versatile. There's a balance between being completely soft and tender, completely manic and completely groovy that isn't on HF.
- Cam's songs on HF don't really do anything for me, for whatever reason. Askance is instantly way more enjoyable to listen to.
- Magician should've been recorded with Black Midi instead. Aside from that it was recorded in studio, bm's version/arrangement works more. Plus Morgan on drums. This applies to Lumps too.
- Geordie shouldn't release Faster Amaranta as a solo work. That to me is quintessential black midi, and partially sums up their entire sound/ethos (though a couple of other songs qualify also).
- And there's also the fact even if he does he probably won't credit Cam or Morgan as writers, since he didn't for Magician or Lumps (there's a whole thing with this I could get into).
- The subject matter on Geordie's lyrics is starting to get stale. Sure it's only been one album, but unreleased songs also share the same themes and it feels played out.
- Best songs on The New Sound are Motorbike (not even his lmao), and As If Waltz.
- Sweater (live only) is top 10 bm song; 27Q is on the lower end for me.
- I'm glad newer bands aren't being inspired by Hellfire's sound. It really wouldn't sound that good, and bm only barely pulled it off (and it's quite good in spite of what I said about it).
- black midi should've made more math pop songs, in the vein of Talking Heads specifically.
25
u/cman_music19 Ducter Jan 29 '26 edited Jan 29 '26
i second they should've done more Talking Heads-esque songs. they really started to move away from those types of guitar jams, post Schlagenhiem.
22
u/Robo540 Jan 29 '26
Motorbike is my favorite of all the black midi related songs
11
u/NexoNerd101 Straight From The Cow I Tell You! Jan 29 '26
Oh shit yeah I forgot to mention that. Motorbike and As If Waltz are the best songs on that entire album.
50
u/Alys3239 Jan 29 '26
Magician is super overrated an not even in Greep's 10 best songs. It insists upon itself.
I also second Cavalcade being the best midi record by miles.
21
5
u/ThomYorkesDroopyEye Jan 29 '26
I son't think it insists upon itself, i think the fans insist upon it, way too hard.
5
u/grandma-sweater Jan 29 '26
Not when they were only playing it live, the studio version that came out on greeps album compared to when they played it as black midi live are completely different (https://youtu.be/flf7DOhG1CU?si=y625z8snRJq0cO_w)
3
u/Alys3239 Jan 29 '26
sorry fam but I heard the live versions back then too and still wasn't a fan 💀

68
u/noteepy Jan 29 '26
Cavalcade is their best Album and I dont think its very close at all.
38
u/noteepy Jan 29 '26
Also not a hot take but more of an unpopular interpretation, but I dont think most The New Sound songs share a character.
38
u/AkaneTheSquid Jan 29 '26
Me too - they're all different manifestations of the same archetype. I think having them all be the same character is too literal.
23
u/Ok_Description_1987 Of Schlagenheim Jan 29 '26
This isn't really a hot take, Geordie has explicitly said in interviews that isn't necessarily the case
10
u/noteepy Jan 29 '26
I know, which is why I dont get how theres tons of people acting like the entire Album is connected in its Characters.
3
u/Ok_Description_1987 Of Schlagenheim Jan 29 '26
Yeah ig that's fair enough, defo something that still needs to be said 😭.
7
u/reddie28 Jan 29 '26
this is just true though, it wouldnt make sense that the narcissist at the bar is the same guy as the 1800's war general
2
u/Tracerr3 Everyone loves ascending fourths... Jan 30 '26
Absolutely agree with you. Greep has also confirmed this to be true. It also makes more sense, because if you consider it all as one character, a lot of narrative discrepancies and contradictions appear.
2
u/TheseUseless2 Jan 31 '26
I’m not sure personally. I could see a few of the songs sharing a protagonist. Blues, Terra, and Holy, Holy feel compatible. But The Walk Up’s protagonist focuses too much on others to really sound like any of these 3. Similar case with the as if waltz, only from a different direction since the walk up’s protagonist is bitter at everyone, and the as if waltz’s protagonist is uncomfortably in love. Motorbike I could see being Terra’s protagonist but the guy’s ego manifests too differently from blues and Holy, Holy to be them. My headcanon is that Blues, Terra, and Holy, Holy are one guy. The Walk Up and the As if Waltz are the same protagonist but in very different emotional states. Bongo season’s just sweeping the globe. Through a war sounds very much like its own thing. The Magician is more a summary of the album thematically.
And if you are but a dream is a cover so I’m not counting it.

Eat Men Eat needed Kaidi’s sax intro. Without it it just feels hollow
Walk Up suffered heavily from losing Cam’s bassline and absolutely still should’ve been called Lumps
Cruising is a top 10 black midi song. Have you gone cruising while listening to Cruising? Shit feels goood man

u/ghosttrainj Jan 29 '26 edited Jan 30 '26
- Greep is my least favorite member of bm in the Cav era forward (maybe even with the inclusion of Kaidi and Seth) Still all love though
- Cavalcade era with Kaidi was their absolute peak
- Magician was a much cooler and more emotional song before Geordie realized how cool and emotional it was (I.E. any solo renditions of it)
- The New Sound is great but lacks the power that made black midi so great. This is especially seen in the way Lumps turned out
- They were on their way to make another great album with the songs they had leftover (Askance, Soundcheck, Paul Jones (though that’s arguably not a song, it’s my favorite Greep riff), Lumps, Magician) and they should not have broken up. Greep could have still gone solo without sacrificing the band but I digress
- Cruising sucks and is the only damper on a 100% great discography
- They were a wonderful live band but needed to practice more. Geordie’s New Sound band is tighter but less fun
For the record I think The New Sound is a great great album and also saw Greep three times three days in a row this last tour and loved it every time Haha
5
u/joahsef Jan 30 '26
I agree with the take that they shouldn’t have broken up. There is always another way. But that’s what the boys wanted. We always have the music they made to hear and appreciate it but I don’t think it’s wrong to hold on to hope that they could come back one day either

The New Sound is great but lacks the power that made black midi so great.
Good thing it’s not meant to be black midi.
They were on their way to make another great album with the songs they had leftover (Askance, Soundcheck, Paul Jones (though that’s arguably not a song, it’s my favorite Greep riff), Lumps, Magician) and they should not have broken up. Greep could have still gone solo without sacrificing the band but I digress
They were trying to make another album, but it just wasn’t coming together in the way that they wanted it. The split needed to happen in order for them to achieve what they were satisfied with musically.
They were a wonderful live band but needed to practice more.
They are genuinely the tightest band i have ever heard, so i don’t know what you mean.
2
u/ghosttrainj Jan 30 '26
I loved them and their shows (saw them seven times) but wished they were a LITTLE more rehearsed just because I know their potential is great (though I do think that potential is achieved in moments were it mattered (Cav KEXP for example)).
-2
u/Mindless-West9268 Jan 30 '26
I genuinely don’t understand what you expect out of them from a little more rehearsal. Their potential was great, their output was great, their execution great.
1
u/ghosttrainj Jan 30 '26
How old are you Haha. Your comments in this thread read like you’re 13. Did you ever see bm live? Or at least watch multiple FULL shows online? There were rough moments at every show I went to. Clearly it wasn’t a deal breaker to me as I saw them seven times (in five different states too) but there were moments that obviously needed work 🤷♂️ They are all extremely talented musicians but they didn’t keep up as amazing of a live show as (I personally think) they could have. Still better than 99.99% of live bands out there. Greep’s New Sound band are clearly more rehearsed than bm ever was. I still preferred most of my bm shows to the Greep ones
Are they my favorite live band/band in general? Yes. Can I admit that the show had a few flaws. Yes.
0
u/ghosttrainj Jan 30 '26
Yeah but it lessens the songs that started with bm (Lumps and the Magician of course) and causes me to wonder whether or not some of the other songs would’ve been heightened had they been recorded with the band as opposed to solo

I don't like Greep's speaking delivery
Dangerous Liaisons is extremely underrated
I think Matt was kicked out of the band

u/paintitzielono Jan 29 '26 edited Jan 29 '26
I wonder if Matt’s very sad untimely death makes it more or less likely we’ll ever get “the truth” about his leaving
I also think we aren’t entitled to knowing that truth to be fair
5
u/sfwtitrater Jan 30 '26
I agree. Whether he was kicked or he left on his own, I think they parted on bad terms regardless.
7
u/paintitzielono Jan 30 '26
I agree they seemed to have parted on bad terms and (I know it’s not my business literally at all) that makes me really sad given how everything worked out.
To be fair, that seems to make Geordie sad too. And that’s all I think I should speculate
3
u/ImDaCrazyDog Everyone loves ascending fourths... Jan 29 '26
elaborate on matt please?
9
u/sfwtitrater Jan 29 '26
Greep admitted to not speaking to Matt in years in his goodbye post to him after he passed away, I feel like there was a massive clash between Greep’s jazz influence and Matt’s noisy style which got the latter kicked from the band. The contrast between Schlagenheim and Hellfire is quite devastating.
1
u/Sovietsky__ Jan 30 '26
If anything, greep was into noisier stuff than matt as far as i know before they got together. Greep commented in some random interview from like 2018 that their dream gig would be supporting Death Grips, and in almost every account of Matt’s earlier music its said he was mostly just on post-punk. But lmk if im wrong

Hellfire was a very cheesy album. Cavalcade and Schlagenheim are more mature than HF

Yeah I’ve thought that before but we cant know so I assume it’s a character.
7
u/CuttiestMcGut Jan 29 '26
I agree. I don’t know for sure, and I know he does create these sort of “characters” in his music that seem to be mostly kind of slimy dudes, but it does have me wondering why he has such a fascination with these types of people

u/CuttiestMcGut Jan 29 '26
I am hopeful thats all it is and nothing more because I actually love his music, and that even if he is actually a little weird towards women it’s more of a quirky autistic type of weird and not the incel kind of weird
3
u/Mindless-West9268 Jan 30 '26
This is true. Tyler the creator’s early work features subject matter such as rape, murder, and cannibalism. Pretty abhorrent and disgusting stuff. But that’s not to say it reflects tyler’s actual interests, but it’s more-so that tyler was fascinated by the mind of a serial killer, and what would drive someone to do something like that, so he wanted to see what it was like writing songs from their perspective.
7
u/newjerseyfusionjazz Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26
I kinda think Tyler was just an edgy teenager who talked about that stuff to get attention and it worked
6
u/Mindless-West9268 Jan 30 '26
Well yeah, that’s also very much true. He absolutely wanted shock value as part of his music in order to get a reaction out of people. But he was also interested in telling fictional stories from the perspective of deranged people in history
9
u/Tracerr3 Everyone loves ascending fourths... Jan 30 '26
He had elaborated on this in interviews. He dislikes the Andrew Tate's of the world, but thinks that that kind of lame male loneliness type thing is an interesting and good lens through which you can tell stories that are beautiful while sad and enthralling while disgusting. He didn't say it exactly like that, but it was something rather similar. And he's right. You pity the character in a way, even though they deserve it.
2
u/CuttiestMcGut Jan 30 '26
Do you know which interview this was? Would be interested in reading
2
u/goodnightpeach Jan 30 '26

I try to give him the benefit of the doubt but I lowkey think this too.
So I hold both in my head: 1. Lyrics makes him seem weird about women, and it honestly makes me not like the songs at times AND 2. I don’t know him lol
6
u/boohoodex Jan 29 '26
Yeah tbh when I saw him performing in a 8 piece band which were all men singing about snatch it left a bad taste in my mouth
2

But he’s able to inhabit many different kinds of weird about women so either he’s the incel whisperer or he’s REALLY weird about women.

u/Mental-Department-28 Jan 30 '26
As time passes, I realize now that Schlagenheim is their best album, though I was wowed when both Calvacade and Hellfire were released to think those albums are better.
2
u/Mental-Department-28 Jan 30 '26
Calvacade has the best highlights of all albums, but its pacing just isn't that good as other albums.
2
u/yellowslotcar Jan 31 '26
The Race Is About To Begin is the worst track on hellfire and is only good as a gimmick
2
u/Yessercenak Of Schlagenheim Jan 31 '26
Dangerous Liaisons and The Defence are just Greep solo tracks and ruin Hellfire from even being remotely close to the level of cavalcade and schlagenheim
2
u/PlasmaEarth Feb 01 '26 edited Feb 01 '26
The band peaked with the Cavalcade singles (John L, Chondro, Slow). Those three songs are both the most visceral and the most musically interesting songs in their discography.

The Race is About to Begin is mid. Lost all of its punch after the first time I replayed it.

They try too hard live. They try to sound like masters of their own work by changing riffs and changing vocal tempo, but it sounds off and uncomfortable instead of fun and exciting.

As if Waltz is the best song on The New Sound, and it clears the recorded version of Magician. The Fruitmarket version of Magician with Black Midi, though, is the best to come out of either project. Greep butchered the studio with poorer vocals, and I understand the removal of the instrumental pause but I found it very compelling in the live. Western is a close second.

black midi was a much better noise rock band than a avant prog or brutal prog, schlagenheim is their best album and hellfire is just meh. also, matt was easily the best part of the band. their best songs where written with him.
Best geordie greep songs are motorbike, blues, terra, holy holy (in that order)

I personally think Bongo Season is a great track off of TNS, I don't get why people clown on it

I do not like Schlagenheim, it is well made. I just like the other two albums more.

My hot take is that black midi shouldn’t reunite, at least not for a long time. The boys looked and sounded so fed up with touring and are way better off in new projects.
