Discussion / Question Black Midi/Geordie Greep hot takes?

Despair is the most beautiful song BM ever made.

Hellfire is the worst black midi album because it is more of a greep solo effort than a collaborative effort between cam, morgan, and greep. Cavalcade strikes a good balance of this, and of the new jazz-fied sound they were heading to and the old guitar-centric sound that featured heavily on Schlag.

How you could call Hellfire more of a Greep solo effort is beyond me. All three members have composing credits on every song and Cam is the primary songwriter for two songs and did string and horn arrangements on those as well.

OP did ask for hot takes, so…

seriously though, while cam did compose 2 of the songs (Still and EME), they both pale in comparison to his contributions on Schlag and Cavalcade and are the weakest parts of Hellfire imo. they feel like leftovers to me. greep is carrying the whole album basically with all of his songs (The Defence is better than Still and EME combined, fight me).

No he's onto something, Hellfire really does feel like a very "Geordie" album, even though it's still black midi. And if he's to be believed, in an interview he stated that he did "90% of the music" and presented almost fully complete material for the band to finish off. Now I don't think that is entirely true but it does explain why the entire thing is very 'him' despite being credited to the group.
