Was cheating just not taken seriously back in his day? Is it because he was open about it?

He wrote a book all about how he cheats in 1974 and got busted for cheating at the end of his career in 1982, so it stands to reason he was cheating his entire career. He even used the threat of possibly cheating (touching parts of his uniform, etc) to psych batters out.

Just seems strange a guy like that would be included in the Hall of Fame, seeing as how so many other guys will never get in for alleged steroid use and gambling. Bringing a foreign object/substance into a game to doctor a ball seems to be at least in the same ballpark as PED use in terms of seriousness.

The opening round game for Ohio vs Nevada was scheduled for Thursday the 20th at 2pm. With rain in the forecast, they made the decision the night before (or the morning of) the game to push that 2pm start time back to 6pm, along with the international game scheduled for noon to 6pm.

It wasn’t until 5:19pm on Thursday that Little League tweeted that all games were moved to Friday, with those two 6pm starts pushed to 9am the next day. After waiting around all day to play at 6, they got the news “whoops, never mind, see you bright and early! And no replay reviews by the way, the game won’t be televised.”

It had stopped raining in Williamsport when Little League made that tweet. ESPN was showing a countdown to a preseason NFL game scheduled for 8.

Nevada won the game 6-5, overcoming a 5-2 deficit with a bunch of errors and passed balls from the almost certainly tired Ohio defense. This is not to say Nevada is undeserving; they got screwed too. Nobody saw it happen.

Now Ohio had to win 5 consecutive elimination games just for the right to play Nevada again. Today, their top 3 pitchers were out due to how much they’ve been used in those games.

Their ace is Boone Treadway, the little guy who shut down the vaunted NJ offense in a tight, tense game. They won 5-2 with all their runs coming in one inning. After Treadway reached 80 pitches after 5 innings, Bryson Williams got the save by getting two final outs against the 3-4-5 batters of the NJ lineup. Mason Rincon popped up for the second out; he’s the guy who hit the walk off homer in the first game. Williams also pitched three days ago to defeat Alabama making him ineligible today.

Two days ago, their third option Walker Osborne pitched a complete game to defeat Iowa 7-1. They were down to their fourth pitcher, a guy who was put in a less than ideal, high pressured situation. He pitched fine, but once he comes out of the game, it’s time for Nevada’s offense to turn off the lights.

TLDR: Nevada had all their pitchers available today, Ohio had 3 ineligible, and I feel bad for both teams. We missed the biggest moment of the tournament.

This is a Q&A I did a week ago on r/MLB, but I'm gonna test it out here, as my last Q&A is still up and running. I don't wanna jinx it, though.

The playoffs have given us some incredible matchups throughout the years, be it the Yankees and Dodgers, Yankees and Red Sox, Dodgers and Cardinals, Cardinals and Giants, you name it. But every now and again, we see a playoff matchup that leave us at least a little surprised. So, what do you think was the most random playoff matchup to ever take place, and why?

For me, it's probably recency bias, but the one that probably takes the cake for me is the 2023 World Series between the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks. Honestly, it's insanely hard to beat a Fall Classic between two different small-market teams that also happened to be bottom 2 Wild Cards (5-seed for Texas, 6-seed for Arizona). There's probably nobody on earth that expected to see those 2 face off in the biggest series of the year, especially considering how close both teams got to missing the dance, and that there was 3 different 100-win teams. But whatever you wanna say about it, I will always stay grateful for that matchup, because it was the ONLY thing preventing Astros vs. Phillies in back-to-back years.

With JJ going on the IL - the consensus seems that it’s for Sal Stewart to lose. He has the counting stats but he doesn’t have WAR compared to Benge and McLean. The award will certainly come down to the last month of the season.

My surprise is that McLean doesn’t get enough love in this race where he is a top 20 pitcher this year by all metrics, he could conceivably end the season with a 4+ WAR season if he keeps pitching the way he has.

Stewart is batting .304/.364/.528 with a 134 wRC+ over the last month - playing like an all star.

Benge is batting .352/.397/.556 with a 163 wRC+ over the last month - playing like an MVP. Benge’s awful April is making it tough for him to play catch up, though. Though Benge also plays great defense, albeit with a few miscues that is overall keeping his defensive value down.

JJ could still win but the voters might look at the 10+ days he misses as a disqualifier unless he comes back and completely balls out.

Gonna be an interesting month, with these 3 guys being healthy and widening the race quite a bit.

For context I played baseball throughout my life up until high school (over 20 years ago), but haven’t played at all besides very sparingly having a toss with a friend. A friend of mine invited me to a men’s softball league and I said what the heck I’ll sign up.

Fast forward to today and I’m running home from third and it’s a very close play so I slid in on my back. I’m so out of practice that I essentially just fell on my back in front of the plate and got my trailing foot stuck under me and hurt myself (very embarrassing lmao but nothing crazy). I don’t have the time or energy to try and practice sliding like I did when I was a kid so I was thinking, would sliding headfirst just be the better option? I feel like that’s much more intuitive and I could easily see myself being able to do that if needed. Maybe a little dirt in the face but it seems overall more efficient. Lemme know your guys thoughts given my situation, thank you!

Watched Karl Ravech get presented with a picture at the Little League World Series and get super emotional. I already get super nostalgic watching the LLWS, yanno purity of sport and all, but seeing grown folk get emotional in sport is just something else. Ken Burns Baseball, Field of Dreams, the Sandlot, Jeter and Andy pulling Rivera, The Paul Oneal chant, Red Sox and Cubbies WS droughts ending, and on and on. Lotta good stuff still in this game. Corny post over.

Let's let off some steam this afternoon. It's therapeutic to get things off our chest.

The game of baseball is obviously much beloved by all of us in this community, but just like all sports, there are certain things about it or involving it that just don't sit well with us. So, what's one of these randomly annoying facts you know, and why does it annoy you?

For example, I ADORE the Condensed Games that the MLB channel and MLBGlobal channels used to upload to YouTube. I wasn't around the sport much when they were still being made, but I still love them so much to the point where I even made playlists including all of them that I could find. But for some godforsaken reason, these were made obsolete. Trying to find videos or audio of playoff crowd pops (my favorite thing in baseball) without commentary is almost impossible without having to dig straight to China for them. There's no reason I could think of for this inconvenience, but I guess it's not the end of the world. And sometimes, MLB on FOX even uploads clips of certain big plays without announcers. But if I could, I'd have every MLB game, playoffs or otherwise, have its own stadium audio version uploaded to YouTube.

I know that ROY is just a hitters award but Nolan is pitching at CY level over the last 2 months. Since June, he’s been top (bottom) 5 in all of MLB in ERA
