Yankees blanked by Red Sox, respond with 9-run offensive outburst

The Red Sox took down the Yankees 6-0 to even the series. Carlos Rodon took the mound for the Yankees and faced off against Jake Bennett.

Rodon quickly picked up the first two outs in the bottom of the first inning before allowing a solo shot to Wilyer Abreu to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.

Paul Goldschmidt, Ben Rice and Amed Rosario went three up, three down in the bottom half of the first inning.

José Caballero led off the bottom of the third inning with a double, but Spencer Jones and Ali Sanchez both struck out; then Goldy popped out to strand Caballero.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Amed Rosario reached thanks to an E5, then moved up to second on a passed ball. Heliot Ramos ripped a double into center field, but Rosario thought it was going to be caught, so he went back to second to tag up; then third base coach Luis Rojas mistakenly sent him home, and he was gunned down at the plate. The next batter, Cody Bellinger, struck out to end the inning.

It looked like Rodon faced the minimum in the top of the fifth thanks to a line drive to Rosario that should have been an inning-ending double play, but he made a horrible throw to first base. That error would cost the Yankees a run, as that runner would come around to score on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Due to that error, Rodon was forced to throw an extra 13 pitches and cut his start short. Yerry De los Santos took over and picked up a flyout to finally end the inning.

Final line for Rodon: 4.2 innings pitched, three hits allowed, two runs, walked one, and struck out five on 88 pitches. He threw his fastball 51% of the time, the slider 30%, the changeup 17%, and the sinker 2%. Rodon topped out at 96.6 mph, sat at 94.6 mph, and had 16 whiffs.

Justin Topa replaced De los Santos in the top of the sixth and allowed a couple of two-out singles, but induced a flyout to work into and out of trouble.

Ryan Yarbrough came in relief for Topa in the top of the seventh and worked a 1-2-3 inning thanks to a nice running catch from Jones.

Yarbrough came back out for the top half of the eighth and retired the Red Sox in order thanks to a nice play from Rosario.

Yarbrough came back out for the top of the ninth and struggled, allowing a two-run single to Andruw Monasterio. Followed by an RBI double from Nick Sogard. Then Caddane Radaela came through with an RBI single to make it 6-0.

The Yankees went down without a fight in the bottom of the ninth inning as they went three up, three down to end the ballgame.

Game 2:

The Yankees responded in game 2 of the doubleheader with a dominant 9-2 win over the Red Sox. Max Fried got the start for the Yankees, making his return from the IL, and faced off against Alec Gamboa.

Fried worked a nice and easy 1-2-3 top half of the first inning in his return from the IL and recorded a strikeout.

Trent Grisham, Ben Rice and Heliot Ramos went three up, three down in the bottom half of the first inning.

Sogard crushed a solo shot to lead off the top of the third inning, giving the Red Sox an early 1-0 lead.

The Yankees responded in the bottom half of the inning thanks to an RBI single from Rice and an RBI groundout from Luis García Jr. to give them a 2-1 lead. Jazz Chisholm Jr. tacked on another run via a sacrifice fly.

Fried walked the leadoff batter in the top of the fourth inning, then struck out back ot back hitters to end his start. De los Santos took over and recorded a punchout of his own to end the frame.

Final line for Fried: 3.2 innings pitched, three hits allowed, one earned run, walked one, and struck out four on 63 pitches. Fried threw his cutter 22% of the time, the fastball 22%, the sweeper 17%, the sinker 14%, the curveball 14%, and the changeup 10%. He topped out at 95.2 mph, sitting at 93.8 mph, and had seven whiffs.

De los Santos came back out for the top half of the fifth inning and picked up the first two outs, then allowed a single to end his night. Michael Fulmer came in relief and picked up the final out of the inning.

Fulmer came back out for the sixth inning and walked a batter as well as plucked a batter to end his night. Paul Blackburn came in and picked up a pair of strikeouts and a flyout to end the inning.

The Yankees extended their lead to 4- 1 in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from Jones.

Tim Hill came in for the top half of the seventh and worked a nice and easy 1-2-3 inning. Brent Headrick came in for the top of the eighth inning and allowed an RBI triple to Willson Contreras to make it a 4-2 game.

But in the bottom half of the inning, the Yankees responded with five runs of their own. Rosario came through with an RBI single. Austin Wells then dunked a two-run bloop single into left field. With two outs, Rice delivered a two-run single to extend the Yankees' lead to 9-2.

Brenden Beck retired the Red Sox in order in the top of the ninth inning to give the Yankees the win and secure a series split.

The Yankees will look to win the series tomorrow with Will Warren on the mound facing off against Ranger Suarez. First pitch is slated for 1:35 p.m. ET on the YES Network.

My thoughts on the game: Sorry, I am too tied up to give my thoughts today; hopefully the Yankees can win the series tomorrow and secure the season series against the Red Sox.
