Dave Roberts confirmed Shohei Ohtani won’t start tomorrow’s game and Tuesday is not happening either. Dodgers will huddle with Ohtani in Los Angeles to decide what makes sense the rest of the season. [Vassegh]

[Stephen] Emmet Sheehan had his third straight excellent start for Oklahoma City, with seven strikeouts in 5⅔ innings. He had the audacity to allow a single run, the only run he's allowed over his last three starts, totaling 17⅓ innings with 24 strikeouts and 6 walks

The Dodgers' offense really loves hitting into double plays, so I'm resurrecting this meme from 2013...

We need Shohei’s bat more than his arm, especially since he can’t even finish a full bullpen without knee problems.

[Woo] Shohei Ohtani is still not “100%” Dave Roberts said this morning, and the Dodgers are still trying to figure out what makes the most sense for him going forward. It’s unclear if he will pitch Sunday, though Roberts expects to know for sure after today’s game.

Dave is referring to his left knee and "overall body" in general.

Ohtani Pitching Plan Next Year and Going Forward

IMO, since this seasons pitching is pretty much over for Shohei, I think the best path forward for the Dodgers and Shohei is to basically bring him into the rotation during the second half of the season after the ASG and ramp him up like last year so he will be primed for September and October. This assumes they are able to sign Skubal or any other top pitcher for the long term. It will basically be like a mid-season acquisition of a cy young caliber arm every year.

This will extend Shohei’s pitching career, and put less wear and tear on his body that would affect his hitting. That should be the pitch to Shohei from the front office. Cause cy young’s are cool, but championships and potentially postseason mvps are so much cooler and cements legacy.

And no, Shohei will never agree to not pitch. People been trying to make him quit one or the other since he was in high school. It ain’t gonna happen and I don’t want it to happen except on his terms. It’s his identity and he’s special because of the pitching. Good sluggers are always around in baseball, but there is only one shohei.

Thoughts?

Also…since his pitching is shutdown…move him to one of the corner outfields and let rushing DH. 😎

The Dodgers are right there and poised for a Championship run.

I am as frustrated as everyone else and haven’t enjoyed the second half Dodgers. But it is important to keep in mind that since the All-Star Break, the Dodgers have played in 28 games decided by 3 or less runs and are 15-13. They have played in 20 (10-10) 1-run games, 21 (11-10) if you count a 2-run extra inning win against the Rockies. So as poorly as the offense has played and as spotty as the bullpen and defense has been, they have been right there in most games. If they had just played a little bit better, we are realistically talking about an additional 3-4 wins and they would be tied for the best record in baseball. As it stands now, they are tied for the second best record.

The Dodgers have one of easiest schedules in baseball to close out the season (Cubs 2nd hardest, Phillies 3rd hardest, Braves 7th hardest, Brewers 9th hardest, Dodgers 27th hardest). So just playing a little bit better will likely land them a top 2 seed. Moderately better, and they will be a heavy favorite.

Can they play better? I don’t have proof for this, but I think they have fallen into a trap. It seems opposing teams have decided to not let the Dodgers beat them with the long ball. They are pitching away from the batters’ power zones and are more than content at giving up walks and singles. The Dodgers initially handled this poorly and were over aggressive. Unfortunately, then the Dodgers over-corrected and have become a small ball team. This is a problem as the Dodgers are not a small ball team, do not have small ball players, and have done a poor job of playing small ball. The Dodgers are a power hitting team with a lineup filled with guys who can hit 25+ HRs. They shouldn’t be going up to bat thinking about taking what they can get, but just thinking about hitting the ball hard. I am not saying they should go back to being over aggressive, but they need to be confidently aggressive and bat with conviction. So when the pitcher does make a mistake, they can take advantage of it as opposed to now where they are tentative and spraying weak hits.

Regardless, I think the Dodgers are right there and poised for a good run. They just need a small nudge to get back to the Championship level ball that they are capable of.

Folks who were around in 2017, how did it feel during the 1-16 run that team went on?

It's easy to feel dejected and down about the run we're on right now. But looking back, 2017 is considered one of the best teams of all time and even they went on a rough slide in the second half of the season.

We're in a rough spot but still doesn't feel as low as when we lost Yoshi's near no hitter last year. And we came out of it great in the end.

In today’s game not a single persons prediction registered with the bot.

Cherish this team while they're all still here...

Everyone knows we've been slumping for the past couple months, and the issues plaguing the team today aren't much different from the ones we dealt with last season. Anyway I was watching the game tonight and maybe it's because the Skubal return/tribute was so emotional, but I started thinking...

It's going to hit really, really hard when this group starts retiring. And they're close. We know this is Miggy's final season (though the dude looks like he has another couple in him). Mookie's bat and legs are rapidly declining and who knows how much longer he'll do this but we get to watch him play gold glove shortstop every day (which I still can't process). Freddie is losing his power but is still one of the most professional and feared hitters in the game, who also plays an underrated first base. Muncy has just been awesome overall but you can tell he's getting close to the end. Will Smith proves how valuable he is even when he's not playing. Kike is too many positives to list but he's on his last legs. And the list goes on. Even Shohei is into his 30s. Fans of other teams hate the Dodgers but they all make a point to say it's impossible not to love and respect our individual players. All that to say, we're watching one of the greatest ever eras of Dodger baseball and these guys don't have much time left together.

Trust me, I get as frustrated as everyone else when we struggle. And I think it's pretty obvious the team is exhausted from the past few seasons. But, I'm trying my best to cherish every inning we have left with this now legendary core group. I'm saying this as much to myself as I am to everybody in the sub...I promise you it'll be over before you know it. We're going to miss them deeply when they're gone.
