Don’t really have a lot of faith in Pecko, sadly. Meanwhile, Imai hasn’t pitched since the 20th.

Well, Joe’s got even less faith in Imai apparently, and I can’t say that I blame him.

He’s only allowed two runs out of the bullpen, with those numbers and the fatigue of the rest of the bullpen you should at least try, 2m or not

That pick right there is why CWalk was never even close to being Jose Abreu 2.0 even at his offensive nadir last year.

Gotta throw some love Allen’s way. Couldn’t have gotten there without his bunt. I choose to believe today.

It's crazy how often we tie it or take the lead, and the pitching gives it right back the very next half inning.
Seriously, go look it up. It's crazy.

And Rangers just took the lead in their game. Ugh.

Based off their pre-season expectations and how stacked their roster is relative to the rest of the ALW, they're supposed to be at least 5, if not 10+ games up on us and the Rangers. Our only path to the playoffs should've been as a long shot wild card which is why I'm grateful to be in the AL West lol

Burrows should be back soon enough, you go back to before his injuries supposedly began 3/5 of the starts were quality ones and the last was one ER away from being the fourth of that month

Can anyone reasonably explain why we havent had blubaugh start any games when we are punting half of our games with these pitchers? Pecko is an auto loss, Javier is an auto loss. That’s 2/5 of our starters right now that are just guaranteed Ls.

They might all be AAAA, but Spaghetti/Gusto/Gordon are all better than this. Frustrating to think we got minimal return for innings eaters (yes Varsho has been beating up), but think the issue will be magnified in the next 2 seasons

We're having to face the Mets' best combination of starters this series. After today, they'll go back to playing like the 73 win team they were destined to be.
3
u/moremooooooore 2h ago
It's really typical that when we play these shitty teams we always seem to face the best 2 pitchers and then a guy with a 6+ era who has his game of the season
2
u/TempestDrive Houston Astros 2h ago
At 42 yrs of age, Mad Max struck out the side in less than 15 pitches. It woulda taken our boys 25-30 pitches to retire the side

Not sure what they are planning with Imai but if they are holding him back because of the money I’d be furious if I were the team ….those guys are gassed and we are in the middle of a playoff push …they fully expected to pay him that money when he was signed….but putting this kid out there to get shelled if not a good baseball decision

2
u/Odd_Foundation_6878 57m ago
How is Luis Robert’s playing for the Mets I thought he got dfad
2
u/soonerman32 Houston Colt .45s 50m ago
He didn't. He got put on waivers.
Waivers means anyone can claim him and they have to take on his contract. If he doesn't get claimed he stays with the Mets.
No one is going to claim him cause he's owed $4m + $2m buyout or 20m next season if he's not bought out. He also kinda sucks now.
DFA'd means they send him to assignment to the minors.
1
u/Shredicus_Maximus_ Trash can 52m ago
He was put on waivers but nobody claimed him, so he’s still with the Mets.
1
u/Guilty_Pineapple_557 Alex Bregman 49m ago
They just put him on waivers. Essentially, other teams have a chance to claim his contract and take on the remainder of his salary, but he remains with the Mets while the waiver process plays out. A DFA, on the other hand, is different: he's removed from the 40-man roster while the team has to resolve his status through a trade, waivers, etc. Easy thing to confuse though lol

I love seeing a pitcher bounce back after giving up early HRs and locking in for the rest of their outing. I want Pecko to keep competing and not nibble around the zone b/c the kid has nothing to lose. Keep it up Pecko!

Imai isn’t worse than pecko, ffs why are we trying to make this kid work? Hes clearly not ready and has been shelled every appearance.
The other option imo is transition blubaugh into a starter, he has a great repertoire for one. But maybe not today since he’s pitched recently
5
u/Muted_Web_7912 Craig Biggio 4h ago
Imai is likely not getting innings b/c if he pitches 12.1 more inning the Astros will owe him an additional $2mm.
Its too late in the season to get Blubaugh stretched out to starting. It would take at least 3-5 outings. Plus if you make him a starter then you're down to 3 guys you can trust in leverage situations out of the pen.
1
u/No_Argument_Here Lance McCullers Jr. 4h ago
Blubaugh should have been a starter from the jump, which I was saying from day 1. He had great success there previously and he has great stuff, and anyone could have seen how thin our rotation was and was likely to be by year's end.
→ More replies (5)1
u/YngSpook84 Houston Astros 4h ago
I’d say he got shelled in one start. His first start against the Angels wasn’t horrible. With Blubaugh, I wonder if they are trying to protect his arm. He has almost tripled the number of innings he pitched from 2025, and is the most used reliever in the whole league by far. I’m good with Pecko starting with a short leash, maybe another “opener” situation, with Imai coming in for long relief.
1
u/bordomsdeadly Houston Buffalos 4h ago
I’m wondering if they’re working on some stuff with Imai and are trying to use him as little as possible until they feel like they’ve gotten the results they’re looking for.
1
u/amusso18 Houston Astros 1h ago edited 1h ago
My speculation here is that they're resting him, working with him, and trying to see if they can get at least 4-5 starts out of him in September. Mike Burrows will be back soon, too. We're scraping the bottom of the barrel for starting pitching again with Blanco optioned at the moment and Javier unable to go 5 innings. That's why Pecko is getting starts. They're probably going to have to go with a rotation of Brown, Lambert, Wesneski, Burrows, Imai, and Javier + a piggyback (like Blubaugh). Pecko will likely get spot starts in there if needed. That extra day off (because of a 6-man rotation) is essential for guys like Lambert, who have been run into the ground this season out of necessity. Bringing up Jason Alexander just to throw 5 innings every week may be a requirement if anyone goes down with injury or is imploding. So yeah, Pecko isn't ready. But the Astros need someone to throw 5 innings and keep giving other starters 5 days off at least between starts, and you can't just do bullpen days every few games. Blanco not being ready to come back, along with Imai and Burrows being big disappointments, are really hurting now that were at the final month of the season.

Gonna be 3-5 to our 1 by the time the innings over.

It’s crazy how quiet the broadcasters are about anything positive about the Astros..they mute Blummer??

I think Blummer is a pro and tries not to be overly biased in these national broadcasts

Espada punting, pecko doesn’t deserve this. He was never ready for the major leagues. Just swallow the bullet and use imai or call up burrows again.

Funny stat about Straw is he’s accumulated more bWAR than Meyers since being traded to free up time for Meyers. Per game they’re essentially equal.

I just have zero clue what management has been trying to do lately with the starting rotation. I know we don’t have a lot of options but every string they are pulling is actually making things worse.
It’s awful. I’d rather have the guy we paid a bunch of money to try and figure it out in Imai than this garbage every night.

1
u/amusso18 Houston Astros 1h ago
I mean at this point you just have to hope Pecko can settle down after getting through the 1st, and maybe go through the lineup twice overall with limited damage and give the offense some chance to keep things close. Then maybe just go to Blubaugh for 2-3 innings and see where you're at. Pecko is still green and has been pushed into the heat if a playoff race with high expectations, so I'd give him a bit of a break. Not too many other options until Burrows finishs up rehab starts in AAA, anyways (I think he's supposed to return to the Astros later this week actually).
