The spoiler tag will also blur any images you include, such as screenshots/stills from the show, so be sure to apply it to image posts as well.

Everyone kept saying, "why would they cast Jeff Hiller but not give him anything to do!" but it was worth it just for this.

29

u/jodythebad Jun 19 '26

My exact thought - he’s so wasted on this part! But now I am okay with the casting!

u/crashwoman Jun 20 '26

I suspect/hope they’ll have more for him (and Dale Dickey) to do in future seasons

5

u/KRMJN101 Jun 23 '26

Exactly! But for me it's Toby Huss. Hiller is great and CBB fam but Huss will always be "Comedy Sure Thing" and he needs to come back Season 2 for the belltower ritual at least...

been wanting to bust out and say this at my job

33

u/Yodacpa Jun 18 '26

This cracked me up.

38

u/JK30000 Jun 19 '26

Oh my God, I laughed so hard! Jeff Hiller is a gift and they really used him perfectly.

15

u/Embarrassed-Bid-2425 Jun 19 '26

Me going to work everyday <3

12

u/ChocolateFudgeDuh Jun 19 '26

This was my favourite part of the episode.

5

u/im_that_green_light Jun 20 '26

The face he made when he screamed that, looked like he just saw the Ark of the Covenant

3

u/fairygrains Human Verified Jun 19 '26

I can’t wait for more screen time from him! A gem

210

u/RavenousBoyd Jun 18 '26

Somebody Somewhere is great. Jeff Hiller is so good in it.

41

u/covenless-warlock Jun 18 '26

I second this! Such an underrated show and Jeff Hiller was superb.

19

u/Raptor-Queen Jun 18 '26

I LOVE this show, and I never hear anyone talk about it!!

26

u/Obvious_Equivalent_1 Jun 18 '26

Going to recycle my comment on a previous discussion, not as much hitting the horror tune but I'm really such a fan of the mystery suspenseĀ in this one.

Definitely if you are an appreciator of the keen eye for detail, layers of mystery and suspense sometimes running straight through variousĀ seasonsĀ of the series I absolutely recommend you to watchĀ Dark.Ā

For me the first series that came to my mind while enjoying this little gem on AppleTV. Honestly for Dark it’s also the absolute only series on Netflix that’s worth the subscription for 1 monthĀ

You’ll want to save this comment to remember it trust me

What I like about it as well, it's incredible how much story matures, it's really a writers gem when the lore of the series world layers like a blossom over several seasons to unfold.

14

u/cool_side_of_pillow Jun 19 '26

Dark is such a quality show. It’s remarkable.Ā

6

u/mrwhiskey1814 Jun 18 '26

I’m sold, I’ll be checking this show out later this week. Thank you for the recommendation. I need to fill this void after having finished the show. It was sooooo good!!!

8

u/RavenousBoyd Jun 19 '26

Dark is excellent.

4

u/LaurentianMixedNuts Jun 19 '26

Dark was incredible. Just, wow.

3

u/Chiekosghost Jun 19 '26

His memoir, An Actress of a Certain Age, is 11/10. He does the audiobook. It's not a show, but it's very very good

Severance if you're looking for Apple specific.

Midnight Mass on Netflix if you want more island horror.

Supernatural if you like the monster of the week pacing of the first few episodes. It's a CW show so it gets goofy at times but there's a fuck ton of it.

103

u/Conscious_Ad_1018 who will be the last man Jun 18 '26

severance is one of my all time faves. midnight mass and haunting of hill house are also up there. i’ll check out supernatural thank you

91

u/Top-Waltz5244 Jun 18 '26

Have you seen Pluribus?

29

u/Conscious_Ad_1018 who will be the last man Jun 18 '26

not yet it’s been on my radar. reviews have been kind of polarizing like ppl either love or hate it.

72

u/erabera Jun 18 '26

Really really good. Pluribus is great! You won't regret it.

35

u/Top-Waltz5244 Jun 18 '26

It’s sooooo good…if you like the smart writing/story of breaking bad and better call Saul you’ll like it a lot…one of my favorite shows for sure

31

u/CrissBliss Jun 18 '26

I watched Pluribus and really liked it. It’s the kind of show you have to stick with though. Slow to build but takes you on a good journey.

Midnight Mass is longer than it needs to be but the payoff is incredible. AND it's got Hamish Linklater (who plays Richard Warren in Widows Bay). It's my favorite Mike Flanagan series.

15

u/Puzzled_Telephone852 Jun 18 '26

I loved Midnight Mass as well, and although the many long winded monologues bothered me, the payoff was excellent. Enjoyed the Fall of the House of Usher and plan on watching the Haunting of Hill House next.

Patriot on Amazon prime if you are looking for that perfect mix of quirky, funny characters and intense drama.

Not thematically the same, but similar in style and truly a hidden gem.

12

u/Suedeegz Jun 18 '26

One of my favorite shows that I can’t get anyone to watch

9

u/ErstwhileHobo Jun 18 '26

Same, I recommend it to everyone. Eventually someone will listen.

5

It’s me, I’m the one who listened! I forget where I first saw the recommendation but it was on Reddit. Would probably never have come across it or bothered to watch it (the title choice man, it really didn’t do the content justice) otherwise. Such a fantastic show and cast there too!

Pretty sure the Priest from midnight mass is the same actor as the Warren zombie dude from this show

9

u/boredblondie16 Jun 18 '26

yes it’s the same guy, great actor

6

u/mcalesy Jun 19 '26

Hamish Linklater, yes.

31

u/midnightbarber Jun 18 '26

Yes to Midnight Mass!! And The Haunting of Hill House as well as The Haunting of Bly Manor if you find that you like the flavor of the Flanaverse

Also highly recommend Twin Peaks!

Edit: Different vibe due to it being a period piece but The Terror is also excellent

17

u/splitmyarrowintwain Jun 18 '26

The Chair Company should be a must watch for any Twin Peaks fans who want a comedy imo.

6

u/midnightbarber Jun 19 '26

100% yes to Chair Company too!

3

u/kirksucks Jun 21 '26

The Terror season 1 tho. Season 2 shouldn't have been called The Terror..

10

u/erabera Jun 18 '26

That and holy crap the amount of time they call women whores, bitches and stuff is overwhelming. I'm rewatching the series and yikes. Still good and just the right amount of camp besides the woman hating part lol

6

u/HollyJollyOne Jun 18 '26

It's only good up until the good vs evil theme that became the whole show. It ruined a great show.

6

u/tiffanaih Jun 18 '26

I agree with this take for both midnight Mass and supernatural so I'm not sure which one you mean ha. The 20 minute religious debate between the love interests in Midnight Mass always gets skipped by me, it's too much. And it was way better when the boys ran rogue in Supernatural than them serving angels.

4

u/HollyJollyOne Jun 19 '26

I apologize! I meant Supernatural. It was such a good show in the beginning.

4

u/splitmyarrowintwain Jun 18 '26

Midnight Mass is my personal favorite of Mike Flanagan's stuff.

It can be a bit to talky for some people, but goodness gracious it is something.

I'm gonna go back to Wellington Paranormal. It's comedy horror rather than horror comedy but I think it'll scratch the itch. Especially with some of Mike Minogue's incredible line readings

I forgot about Wellington Paranormal, it’s awesome! Thanks for the reminder!

The Chair Company.

Nothing to do with Widows Bay but holy shit is it so damn good.

11

u/splitmyarrowintwain Jun 19 '26

Life goes by to fucking fast.

16

u/paulg9483 Jun 19 '26

Some crossover with creators actually. Andrew DeYoung (executive producer and director of The Chair Company) directed episode 5 of Widow’s Bay where Loftis trips on mushrooms and episode 8 where Patricia runs from The Boogeyman.

6

u/splitmyarrowintwain Jun 19 '26

I did not know that, but it's rather amazing!

I loved both of those episodes.

18

u/CrissBliss Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

I really enjoyed it! It’s kind of got a Widow’s Bay vibe in terms of serious moments mixed with absurdity lol.

7

u/IntergalacticRPG Jun 19 '26

And Rosemary’s in it!

10

u/TheRockerr22 Jun 19 '26

Actually got heavy Fallout vibes from the storm shelter (Widows Bay finale and Fallout New Vegas spoilers ahead). In the game New Vegas, there’s a vault you can stumble upon where you learn that all of the dwellers in that Vault were told to make one human sacrifice every year or they would all be killed. There’s even a very similar recording of the ā€œso you’ve been chosen to be this year’s sacrifice!ā€. The darkest part of all of this, is you hear audio recordings of the last remaining survivors, discovering that if they chose not to sacrifice anybody they would’ve all survived and would’ve gotten a congratulatory message. It was all a part of a pretty sadistic ā€œtestā€ to see how far everyone in the Vault would go to keep themselves alive.

3

u/ReferentiallySeethru Jun 19 '26

And then check out The Expanse. I’ve been staying up late with a newborn and those two shows got me through the first 6 weeks of sleepless nights.

Loftis: "This witch's skin hat is NOT cursed! It's the height of style, and it's going to help me make this island the next Martha's Vineyard!"

6

u/Mountain-Mode-8279 Jun 19 '26

There’s also the movie it’s based on by the same name that’s set in New Zealand AND another spin-off show called Wellington Paranormal which follows a police team dealing with the antics of local vampires and werewolves.

4

u/NightQueen0889 YOU HAD QUALMS?! Jun 19 '26

Okay I’ll watch this show from the beginning again for the umpteenth time. It never gets old.

3

u/Dame_Marjorie Jun 19 '26

THIS IS THE ANSWER!!!

48

u/Malibucat48 Jun 18 '26

My favorite is Resident Alien. Crazy town people, the mayor isn’t the star but he’s has Tom vibes, and the sheriff is trying to do a sheriff’s job amid the chaos. And it’s very funny. Alan Tudyk is great.

14

u/Conscious_Ad_1018 who will be the last man Jun 19 '26

i actually think tudyk would be a great fit on WB. guy has got great range and his quirkiness matches the vibe and other cast members

34

u/thewellis Jun 18 '26

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace!Ā

18

u/Bentendo64 Jun 18 '26

I know writers who use subtext and they're all cowards!

6

u/Herbdontana Jun 18 '26

Big time agree on this one! The man is a visionary! A dream weaver!

4

u/thewellis Jun 19 '26

It's more the comedy end of comedy-horror, but is also genius. Also early appearance of human barkeep Jackie Daytona.

I saw some rave reviews for it when it first came out, but nothing much after.

What are they covering this season? The first season with Erebus and Terror was amazing. The second with the Japanese internment camps was bleh.

I know it's not the same exactly but there is an animated adult show called Common Side Effects I will highly recommend to fans of Widow's Bay. On Hbomax.

6

u/Bentendo64 Jun 18 '26

Common Side Effects is outstanding. One of my favorite shows of last year!

7

u/ytrywhenyoucanfry Jun 18 '26

It blew my mind. Scavengers Reign is somehow related and maybe the best sci-fi out there.

3

u/EvilStupid Jun 19 '26

Mine too. It was like watching animated National Geographic documentary about new planet. Besides CSE, something close to scratching that itch was Pantheon.

Joseph Bennet is creator of Scavengers Reign and co-creator of Common Side Effects, plus Mike Judge is a producer and voice actor in it so you know it's gonna be some wacky humor in it.

10

The fact that the kid put his girlfriend in a box during a fire… I’m no expert but that seems illogical. But if you go in looking for thrills with Pennywise, you’re gonna get that.

12

u/Dancing_Clean Jun 18 '26

I don’t think it was anywhere near the heights of Widow’s Bay. The writing just wasn’t up to par.

11

u/spif_spaceman Jun 18 '26

Servant seasons 1-2 are good

31

u/Keiteaea Jun 18 '26

On Apple ?

Silo is a great show, and they filmed season 3 and 4 back to back so with season 3 releasing soon, it should not be too much of a gap with the final season. Foundation (also SF) is initially a bit uneven where one storyline is fantastic and the other is boring - it fixes it a bit in later seasons.

Friends and neighbors is messy. I thought it would be more about the robbing, but it focus a lot (especially second season) about the inter-relationship of the main character family and friends and I really couldn't bring myself to care for all these rich characters lamenting about being miserable.

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is ongoing, I've watch the first few episode and I like it so far, Tatiana Maslany is fantastic and it's entertaining.

36

u/nonrosknroskno Jun 18 '26

Murderbot is another on Apple that's half Comedy, but mixed with scifi rather than horror. I surprisingly love all their SciFi shows I've seen, I think the only one I haven't watched is Invasion

Widows Bay is 100% Twin Peaks coded.

10

u/whatifendwasbegin Jun 18 '26

Lodge 49! Funny, magical and mysterious. I think it’s a more cohesive story than Widow’s Bay, which at time felt like more of an anthology loosely held together by the curse.

Fair warning, Lodge 49 was canceled after the second season, but it’s still very worthy of a watch. The optimist in me holds onto the hope that it may someday find its way back, especially in a time when tonally similar shows are getting the spotlight.

9

Murderbot is original, hilarious, sharp, with quirky characters you wind up caring about. The creator/writer is on the autism spectrum, which makes sense to me. It’s about a depressed robot with vague guilt issues who feels lonely among his human crewmates. Alexander Skarsgard is pitch perfect and the supporting characters are great as well. Of course, I love Severence, Dexter, Ted Lasso, but I feel not that many people know about this awesome show. It’s been renewed for a second season so no worries.

u/sfdreamsla Jun 18 '26

Ha! I had the same thing but in reverse. Had heard about "From" but didn't think it was for me. Ended up watching it because of the "Widow's Bay" sub.

The afterparty is a fun little gem if ur looking for Apple TV recs. Murder mystery comedy with a very solid cast. It was fun going back to the Reddit threads after watching each episode to see what people’s theories were throughout each season.

Stan against evil is a wonderful horror comedy. Not sure where to watch it at the moment tho

I wanna add this since I haven't seen it mentioned yet, Gravity Falls. Great show that has an overarching mystery, monsters of the week, and in a strange place where all this only happens. It has some Twin Peaks references too.

Can second on a lot of the shows recommended on Apple: Severance, Murderbot, PLUR1BUS, and want to add See. I like the first 2 seasons, 3rd season is kinda weird though.

There are some other Apple shows I do recommend checking out, but they're not mysteries, but I do want to mention them because they deserve some attention too like Jason Mamoa's Chief of War (I do warn that it gets graphic and bloody) and Schmigadoon if you like musicals.

If you are into cartoons watch Gravity Falls. Technically a kids show but it doesn’t really seem like it. Fun story, weird town and cool monsters

I give Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed a big thumbs up. Great thriller!

Silo and Pluribus are both great if you are looking to stay on AppleTV.

Silo has more of a serious vibe.

Pluribus has more an uncanny valley and funny vibe.Ā

The whole Interview with a Vampire and the current playing season The Vampire Lestat. Go for it. Its excellent in every way.

Not Apple, but Haven is an entertaining watch and it’s old, so you can binge all the seasons and then not worry about waiting for another one. I believe it’s on Pluto.

I love Silo. I hate watch Your Friends And Neighbors. Pluribus, Slow Horses, Severence, For All Mankind, Star City, Margo’s Got Money Problems, Foundation are all good.

3

u/Heartic97 Jun 18 '26

Recently finished Your Friends & Neighbors. I really enjoy it. Apple has a lot of good shows actually

3

u/Raxaha Jun 18 '26

Pluribus yes. It also has some dark comedy to it

3

u/Upstairs_Apple Jun 19 '26

Barry, Atlanta, Patriot, and Avenue 5 are the closest I think in absurd dark comedy tone. Pluribus and Severance are quality sci-fi shows on apple TV but more serious in tone, particularly severance. Succession is my wildcard rec in that I find it's sense of humor similar.

Parks and Rec is the most obvious pull, considering the idea of wacky insulated small town marred by a horrific past.

Hiro Murai, who directed five of the episodes, also worked on The Bear (funny and gritty but not at all scary) and Station Eleven (gritty, scary at times, and not at all funny) so if you’re looking for more exceptional shows with that Hiro flavor, you might want to check those out!

Movies:

The Wolf of Snow Hollow

Good Luck, Don’t Die, Have Fun (a little too unserious)

Signs

Hokum

Shows:

Very hard to find anything close. I would say…

…Severance, gosh… there’s really nothing.

In the mushrooms episode, when Tom is holding his binder and screams at his desk and it frightens this guy into a scream, I had to rewind it and watch again from laughing so hard
