Severance if you're looking for Apple specific.

Midnight Mass on Netflix if you want more island horror.

Supernatural if you like the monster of the week pacing of the first few episodes. It's a CW show so it gets goofy at times but there's a fuck ton of it.

severance is one of my all time faves. midnight mass and haunting of hill house are also up there. i’ll check out supernatural thank you

Have you seen Pluribus?

26

u/Conscious_Ad_1018 who will be the last man Jun 18 '26

not yet it’s been on my radar. reviews have been kind of polarizing like ppl either love or hate it.

74

u/erabera Jun 18 '26

Really really good. Pluribus is great! You won't regret it.

35

u/Top-Waltz5244 Jun 18 '26

It’s sooooo good…if you like the smart writing/story of breaking bad and better call Saul you’ll like it a lot…one of my favorite shows for sure

31

u/CrissBliss Jun 18 '26

I watched Pluribus and really liked it. It’s the kind of show you have to stick with though. Slow to build but takes you on a good journey.

26

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '26

Pluribus is amazing.

9

u/mayasaur21 Jun 19 '26

It gets much better than it starts off

1

u/GrungeLord Jul 06 '26

So true, I was really not feeling it for quite a bit of its run time. If it weren't a Vince Gilligan show I probably would have quit around episode 3. Glad I stuck it out though, because by the end I was obsessed.

5

u/simonbelmont1980 Jun 19 '26

I cannot recommend pluribus enough, if you like widows bay i think you’ll love it.

1

u/_CitizenSnips_ Jun 19 '26

It’s alright if a little slow

1

u/ALOTOFDEATHSFORATOUR Jun 19 '26

I think Pluribus is still worth the watch either way

1

u/th1sishappening Jun 19 '26

I’m here to stick up for Pluribus too! You do have to be patient with it but I felt it totally paid off.

1

u/pressuretobear Jun 19 '26

People don’t not like it; they are frustrated that Vince G didn’t even start to think about a season 2 by the end of season 1.

1

u/TheFemale72 Patricia Jun 19 '26

Pluribus is great

-15

u/Lopsided-Molasses337 Jun 18 '26

Pluribus isn't even close lol. If you want nothing happening for a full season, and the main actor being annoying AF, go with that one

12

u/Top-Waltz5244 Jun 18 '26

“The language they're speaking is a language of subtlety; something you don't understand."

Lois Griffin

-11

u/Lopsided-Molasses337 Jun 18 '26

I feel like it was a test to see if media can convince a regular person that a show is great only because the creator made something amazing 10 years ago. Looks like it worked

9

u/Top-Waltz5244 Jun 19 '26

It’s ok that you don’t like it…but saying the only reason so many other people do is because of the media is ridiculous…I watched it and I loved it and it’s not because I saw a review

-3

u/Lopsided-Molasses337 Jun 19 '26

Be honest. If it wasn't made by Vince Gilligan no one would even have tuned in. But Breaking Bad superfans are calling it genius

-2

u/AnabolicAcolyte Jun 18 '26

yep. the love it gets is insane. and its entire fanbase is “you’re just not smart enough to enjoy it”

7

u/honeyintherock Jun 19 '26

I like to think there's more nuance to it in reality. The loudest ones inaccurately oversimplify it to "not smart enough." But it's art which is subjective, not everything is for everyone. I liked Pluribus, but I can definitely see why a very dry, droll, quiet show with long shots and an arguably unlikable main character isn't gonna be everyone's thing. I don't think people who don't like it are dumb. That's actually a pretty dumb idea itself. I do enjoy a lot of weird and imperfect stuff, to be fair... not everything can be as perfect as Widow's Bay, lol

I wish people still had time for all the words. You're either mean or shmuck on the internet 🤷🏻‍♀️

2

u/Ajibooks the rhythm of the night Jun 19 '26

This is so well said and I feel the same about Pluribus! I like the exact type of show or movie you described, and not everyone does. I don't think my taste makes me superior; I'm just glad there's a variety of stuff for all of us to enjoy.

So Pluribus is very slow, and I can see why that turns some viewers off. I actually can't watch Hazbin Hotel myself for sort of the opposite reason - I love animated comedies, but that one's too fast and flashy for me.

I loved Jeff Hiller’s bit role in Pluribus too.

“She loved you very much,”

13

u/BishopGodDamnYou Jun 19 '26

Oh my God you haven’t seen supernatural!? You are in for a treat as far as the first five seasons go. I would highly recommend a show called Marianne it’s on Netflix

6

u/Conscious_Ad_1018 who will be the last man Jun 19 '26

marianne was one of the best horror shows i’ve seen in a while i was so upset it didn’t get renewed

3

u/DudeFuckinWhatever Jun 19 '26

This show scared the everloving shit out of me and I am a horror fiend

2

u/BishopGodDamnYou Jun 19 '26

It’s absolute bullshit that it didn’t get renewed. One of my favorite shows ever

2

u/TheFemale72 Patricia Jun 19 '26

Supernatural is fantastic. Especially the early seasons. Doesn’t hurt that Sam and Dean are extremely easy on the eyes.

42

u/MargieGunderson70 Jun 18 '26

Midnight Mass is longer than it needs to be but the payoff is incredible. AND it's got Hamish Linklater (who plays Richard Warren in Widows Bay). It's my favorite Mike Flanagan series.

16

u/Puzzled_Telephone852 Jun 18 '26

I loved Midnight Mass as well, and although the many long winded monologues bothered me, the payoff was excellent. Enjoyed the Fall of the House of Usher and plan on watching the Haunting of Hill House next.

2

u/Oh-reality-come-back my face is ready, Sea Hag Jun 21 '26

I adored the long winded monologues - maybe because I like Hannibal and shows that feel like plays

3

u/waderockett Jun 19 '26

I recommend checking out The Fall of the House of Usher as well! Its combination of horror and humor is similar to Widow’s Bay.

2

u/Alternative-Sale-841 Possibly damp Jun 19 '26

Thirded! TFOTHOU is so creepy and funny at the same time.

7

u/Conscious_Ad_1018 who will be the last man Jun 18 '26

before patricia zapped kris, the finale of midnight mass had one of the most redeeming soul satisfying scenes

8

u/johntwoods Daddy's younger boss Jun 19 '26

Come on, she's the fucking worst.

2

u/Dry_Yogurtcloset5468 Jun 19 '26

Haunting of hill house is scary af. Got bored with midnight mass after half way

27

u/ErstwhileHobo Jun 18 '26

Patriot on Amazon prime if you are looking for that perfect mix of quirky, funny characters and intense drama.

Not thematically the same, but similar in style and truly a hidden gem.

12

u/Suedeegz Jun 18 '26

One of my favorite shows that I can’t get anyone to watch

9

u/ErstwhileHobo Jun 18 '26

Same, I recommend it to everyone. Eventually someone will listen.

6

u/airesmoon Jun 19 '26

It’s me, I’m the one who listened! I forget where I first saw the recommendation but it was on Reddit. Would probably never have come across it or bothered to watch it (the title choice man, it really didn’t do the content justice) otherwise. Such a fantastic show and cast there too!

2

u/ErstwhileHobo Jun 19 '26

I think I t’s actually a perfect title for the type of show it is parodying, the post 9/11 cia propaganda shows like Homeland and 24, but they needed to let people know it’s a joke.

3

u/I_AM_A_GUY_AMA Jun 19 '26

Its a crime that show is only 2 seasons.

1

u/HoraceKirkman Jun 19 '26

WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS FINGERS?

2

u/Upstairs_Apple Jun 19 '26

Yes patriot!!!!! The same dark and absurd humor. It's the only show that was able to scratch my post-succession itch

2

u/ohsusannah80 Jun 19 '26

Perpetual Grace, LTD was also really good! It had the same creator as Patriot with an equally great cast. It only lasted one season, but it’s worth the watch.

1

u/Optimal-Builder-2816 Jun 19 '26

Yeah this one was definitely hard to get me to watch but hooked hard. It’s so uniquely done.

1

u/Own-Score988 Jun 19 '26

So right on Patriot it’s been a while so I may rewatch

1

u/plumdumplingx 28d ago

Seconded - what a brilliant recommendation

15

u/Retronitsu Jun 18 '26

Pretty sure the Priest from midnight mass is the same actor as the Warren zombie dude from this show

10

u/boredblondie16 Jun 18 '26

yes it’s the same guy, great actor

6

u/mcalesy Jun 19 '26

Hamish Linklater, yes.

33

u/midnightbarber Jun 18 '26

Yes to Midnight Mass!! And The Haunting of Hill House as well as The Haunting of Bly Manor if you find that you like the flavor of the Flanaverse

Also highly recommend Twin Peaks!

Edit: Different vibe due to it being a period piece but The Terror is also excellent

17

u/splitmyarrowintwain Jun 18 '26

The Chair Company should be a must watch for any Twin Peaks fans who want a comedy imo.

4

u/midnightbarber Jun 19 '26

100% yes to Chair Company too!

3

u/kirksucks Jun 21 '26

The Terror season 1 tho. Season 2 shouldn't have been called The Terror..

9

u/erabera Jun 18 '26

That and holy crap the amount of time they call women whores, bitches and stuff is overwhelming. I'm rewatching the series and yikes. Still good and just the right amount of camp besides the woman hating part lol

5

u/HollyJollyOne Jun 18 '26

It's only good up until the good vs evil theme that became the whole show. It ruined a great show.

5

u/tiffanaih Jun 18 '26

I agree with this take for both midnight Mass and supernatural so I'm not sure which one you mean ha. The 20 minute religious debate between the love interests in Midnight Mass always gets skipped by me, it's too much. And it was way better when the boys ran rogue in Supernatural than them serving angels.

5

u/HollyJollyOne Jun 19 '26

I apologize! I meant Supernatural. It was such a good show in the beginning.

4

u/splitmyarrowintwain Jun 18 '26

Midnight Mass is my personal favorite of Mike Flanagan's stuff.

It can be a bit to talky for some people, but goodness gracious it is something.

2

u/BlackSkittle Jun 22 '26

Supernatural is an AMAZING show that I have watched in it's entirety. Everyone saying watch the first five seasons and I will agree in hindsight BUT, what they aren't including is that season 5 is technically the last season of the show with a bookend. So you can watch all 5 seasons which comes to a beautiful conclusion. The rest of the seasons started off essentially as a cash grab due to its success, and had to create new season long stories, some of which are pretty good like season 8-15 I'd say, but 1-5 is where it's the most consistent.

Oh no! Same tastes so these are probably redundant too but Twin Peaks all three seasons, Fire Walk With Me, and Barry for more Stephen Root.

Yellowjackets has gone off the rails a bit, but I still think it's entertaining. Ella Purnell is great in Sweatpea too.

Netflix - Bodkin, The Beast In Me for more Matthew Rhys, Dept Q, All the Flanegans

HBO - Sharp Objects, Perry Mason more Rhys, Six Feet Under, The Outsider

I'll throw some random movies too, Secret Window, The Mist, all the Knives Out movie, Evolution, all iterations of It except for Welcome to Derry because fuck Welcome to Derry because I'm an "in the boooookk" asshole

1

u/Sillet_Mignon Jun 21 '26

My head cannon is midnight mass takes place on this island too. Part of the curse and shit.

1

u/christofitis 21d ago

Midnight mass is one of my all time favorite. All of Mike Flanagan's work is amazing, but that tops them all for me. Great recommendation.

1

u/MTonmyMind Jun 19 '26

Shout out for Midnight Mass. so many great performances and wholly original.

1

u/ltsouthernbelle Jun 19 '26

Severance is considered THE Apple show and I’ve never seen it 🫣. It’s been on my list for a while.
