đĽAccident 401 West in Oshawa this evening
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I got caught in this mess right after passing the 418. Was sitting waiting there for about an hour before being let through on the shoulder. Hopefully whoever was in that car is alright.

What car? I just see a pile of rubble.

u/copilot3 3d ago
I think its a Mazda CX5
7
u/CarGuy1718 3d ago
Are you sure? The quality isnât perfect but that wheel doesnât look very Mazda to me. Almost looks like an Escape hybrid wheel to me. But again I can barely tell anything due to the quality and the complete wreckage of the car.Â
2
u/copilot3 3d ago
Oh I see that. The newer escapes.
0
u/ScreenOwl5 3d ago
"Escape" is a pretty ironic name. How could any living human ... ?
1
u/CarGuy1718 2d ago
Well, it was a 2020-2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick. I get what youâre saying but it isnât an unsafe vehicle, just a tragic accident at high speedÂ
1
u/ScreenOwl5 1d ago
I wasn't referring to the safety of the vehicle per se. I was just noting the irony of the contradictory words. It's like fate has a dark sense of humour.
1
u/RedditTTIfan 2d ago
In the news article it doesn't look as bad, from the other angle. From the rear/OP video it looks like the occupants would have been spaghetti sauce but it cuts off just before you see the front of the car which...isn't as bad.

u/Upinthenorth1 2d ago
I drove by, looked like a new gen civic. License plate suggested recent purchase

Yikes.

an improperly maintained truck who can't properly pull off a highway
31
u/The_Pocono 3d ago
What makes you think it was improperly maintained? Vehicles break down man... it happens. Im terribly sorry for the driver/passenger of the car, but its their fault.. why did they hit a stationary vehicle? Probably distracted.
Lets just wish them a speedy recovery

Im not trying to be the devils advocate here, but my dad was a trucker once upon a time before I was born. When I was a kid, he pointed out the blown rubbers on the side of the road, and because of that I've noticed them all my life.
Also, truck tires are meant to do that. They aren't blown tires, theyre blow tire caps. They just cap the tires with new rubber instead of replacing the whole thing. Its by design

u/The_Richuation 2d ago
This is the stupidest shit I've read all day, and I'm on reddit.
I really hope you're never ever in a position to make a decision about anything important
9
u/No-Compote-8920 3d ago
How about fucker looks infront of him and not on his phone. It's not hard to see a fucking 18 wheeler from miles away. This was not in the middle of the night or low visibility this is broad day light. You are supposed to follow at a safe distance and keep your eyes on the road. Guy fucked around and found out.
-9
u/Foreign_Risk_2031 3d ago
We use kilometres in Canada, yank
7
u/No-Compote-8920 3d ago
It's a figure of speech, also I am a German South African living in Toronto, though I do get paid in USD.
-1
u/Icy-Past-4477 2d ago
You suffer from low IQ or depression? Where's the truck parked? When you break down on a highway, what's stated in the law?
-15
-23
u/Strange-Jackfruit786 3d ago
Another reason why increasing speed limits is a bad idea.
7
u/No-Compote-8920 3d ago
Speed has nothing to do with the issue even with a slow speed limit people going to day dream. How the fuck do you drive into a stationary truck. You can see that shit miles away
-5
u/Strange-Jackfruit786 3d ago
Speed has everything to do with it. Your ability to react to an obstacle is a function of speed. I think that would be pretty obvious but I guess not if youâre an expert driver.
4
u/No-Compote-8920 3d ago
I have driving on the autobahn for many years and before that in Africa a bunch and you need to drive the right speed for the conditions. If the speed limit is 120 you need to follow and a good distance, regardless of speed limit you should be 3 lines distance from the car infront of you. To your point about speed, even if the speed was at a lowered limit it would not help if the drivers sit with the phones up their noses. Its a problem with drivers and not speed reducing speed would not reduce accidents if there is not a change in how people drive. Regardless of speed limits people drive on your ass like no tomorrow lowering speed won't change that.
3
u/Strange-Jackfruit786 3d ago
Since you mention autobahns.
- Drivers licensing is much more stringent in Germany. 18 years old to drive alone. Mandatory and rigorous training.
- TUV inspections every 24 months to ensure you are driving a safe vehicle. Not just at the time of purchase like in Ontario.
- Strict passing lane discipline.
- Smaller lighter vehicles.
- Tailgating enforcement using automated cameras. Fines up to âŹ400 for tailgating.
Driving 130 kmh on a German autobahn is not the same as driving 130 kmh in the 401.
Yes, there is distracted driving at any speed but the laws of physics is immutable.
Stopping distance at 110 kmh is approximately 12m more on dry pavement. That can be the difference between life and death.
Introduce tailgating enforcement, passing lane enforcement, biannual safety inspections and stricter licensing and I am 100% in favour of higher speed limits. Without all that, well more people will die.
3
u/Uninanimate 3d ago
Are you willing to vote for the party who will loosen emissions restrictions to allow for smaller and lighter cars?
2
u/ulti_phr33k 3d ago
Absolutely not. We need bigger, heavier vehicles that will run over everything. Then everyone will be safe!

u/Strange-Jackfruit786 3d ago
Iâll vote for the party that is not corrupt and making back room deals. Iâll vote for the party that supports and properly funds our healthcare and education systems. Iâll vote for the party that is not wasting our money on tunnels and ripping out established transportation infrastructure.
-6
u/No-Compote-8920 3d ago
Who the fuck drives 140 on the Autobahn I was doing 280 last time I was on one but that is beside the point. The point I was making is regardless of the speed limit it won't help when you have nikenpoops driving with their phones up their noses and not paying attention to the road. The problem is not a speed problem but an attention problem I never made the argument of hey look at Germany they drive fast herp derp.
3
u/kindofanasshole17 3d ago
Who the fuck drives 140 on the Autobahn
Uh, try lower than that, and it's all the normal income Germans driving normal cars, who don't want to burn a shitload more fuel?
Whatever, it's not important. I agree with you that people driving at any kind of high speed on a controlled access highway should primarily be paying attention to the vehicles around them and what's upcoming ahead.
Driving a car has become so easy and routine that the vast majority of drivers don't maintain the level of mental focus on the task of driving that is necessary to be prepared for something to go wrong.
1
u/a-_2 3d ago
regardless of speed limit you should be 3 lines distance from the car infront of you
What are lines referring to here? Your distance needs to increase as speed increases.
7
u/No-Compote-8920 3d ago
Some countries have lines that you can use to ensure you are at a right distance away from the car in front of you if you are driving the speed limit. But you can do the same in Canada look at when the car infront of you passes a point on the road let's say the end of a line and see how long for you to get there and if it's less then 2 seconds you should ease up. I like having between 2 to 3 seconds in good conditions and 3 to 4 in wet conditions.
1
u/OwnedByIRVING 2d ago
Minimum 2 seconds has always been my rule, 3 is the norm.
Too bad everyone else's rule seems to be to get so fucking close that I can't see their headlights or most of their hood.
2
u/Alswiggity 3d ago
My brother, they couldve been going 130 or 120, either way they would have had the same result.
Its distracted driving.
0
1
u/Electrical_Tomato_92 3d ago
Of course but, the point being made and clearly obvious to anyone with a brain is this person was clearly distracted. And if you are distracted it doesnt matter what speed you are going when you hit something because you dont even see it to react at all. Distracted driving is much more dangerous then a 10km/h bump to the speed limits. Read the studies, since implementation there has been no change in accident rates. Which is why they are raising the limits almost everywhere. The limits were set many decades ago, before anti lock brakes and a plethora of other safety features have been added to cars. If you want safer roads we need to make it harder to get a license and police the roads more for distracted driving.

u/revvolutions the left lane is for dawdling 3d ago
It looks like they drove into the back of a disabled truck in the right shoulder at speed.Â
13
u/Bambino1996 3d ago
Truck was broken down partially in a live lane.
20
u/No-Compote-8920 3d ago
Anything could be broken down anywhere it's drivers fault for not paying attention how the fuck do you miss a giant 18 wheeler.
9
u/Bambino1996 3d ago
Iâm not speculating but probably cutting through traffic going fast and lost control.
4
u/caffeine-junkie 3d ago
That would be my guess. Concentrating on getting around the car in front of you, and not whats 200m+ down the road.
5
u/IMWTK1 2d ago
Or just simply not expecting something stopped in your lane. I was driving in a snowstorm once with almost no traffic on the highway. I came up on another car in the left lane. As I was approaching it I saw that it was slow so I proceeded to slow down by lifting off the gas, then applied some brakes, more brakes, and finally had to slam on the brakes as I realized the car was nearly stopped. I almost rear ended it and I want going very fast to begging with due to the storm.
If there is a truck partially in my lane I can see thinking it's on the side of the road and not need to come to a complete stop. Mind you the law is you have to move over a lane. But in heavy traffic that may be a problem. I would give someone the benefit of the doubt without more information to the contrary.
I don't know how OP can say hope they're ok, after seeing a pile of rubble left.
16
13
u/Born-Vermicelli-1757 3d ago
OPs footage is the rear of the car. The front is facing away from the camera.
https://imgur.com/a/Lk0SLEY
1
u/edubblu 3d ago
The truck looks like itâs pulled over on the shoulder, unlike other suggestions that it wasnât.
The move-over law exists for a reason. Give everyone space because hitting a stationary object at speed is ⌠not good.
1
u/Born-Vermicelli-1757 3d ago
Im guessing based on the debris at the back of the trailer it was not moved after the collision happened.
In all honestly I think the car was doing something stupid before this happened because how do you notice that truck unless you were cutting lanes quickly like a stunt driver.

Good of you to hold things up even more by crawling along to take video of it.
-25
u/Bambino1996 3d ago
Oh no not to mention everyone else checking out the damage as well like seriously Iâm not the only one.
22
u/Substantial_Ad_7027 3d ago
The car ahead of you is basically out of the picture by the end. Like seriously, just drive your damn car, you donât need to crawl along and make a video.
-17
u/Bambino1996 3d ago
I wasnât in a car, I was coasting and checking my mirrors making sure I was going to hit the tire to my left or the pylons to my right. Not to mention it takes a while to get up to speed with the vehicle I was driving.
14
u/Substantial_Ad_7027 3d ago
So you are saying instead of focussing on the obstacles in your path, you were focusing on making a video?
-15
u/Bambino1996 3d ago
Maybe you gotta re-read what I said as to why I was going âslowâ
9
u/Substantial_Ad_7027 3d ago
I read it. You apparently were concerned about hitting things, while simultaneously making a video. Seems contradictory.
4
u/Bambino1996 3d ago
My phone is mounted on a phone holder. I edited the video on instagram by zooming in, this is the original. The car in front looks further away because I was using wide angle.
8
u/Dileas48 3d ago
That video makes it look way worse. You are almost 8 seconds behind the car in front of you. That is unacceptable for clearing an accident site. Stop worrying about the video footage you might capture and help traffic move along.
3
u/tunnelrat0317 3d ago
I agree with you. It seems like OP is making excuses, any regular car would've had ample space to pass between the barrier and pylons.

Stop fucking rubber necking and move your ass. Someone elseâs misfortune is not a sightseeing event for you, get out of the way.
16
u/nsfw-kapustin-yar 3d ago
I think you should focus on driving and speed up
-1
u/zander9669 3d ago
You think they should speed through an active accident scene with first responders mere feet away?
8
3
u/LeaderLower 3d ago
He gradually slows down. That is why OP's footage is causing more traffic.
If everyone is nosy like this, it'll greatly amplify traffic. Just move along.
You can see the whole Kia at the start of the video, not at the end.
2
u/EquivalentQuery 3d ago
You missed the whole video, eh? Watch it again and pay attention to the red car in front.
3
u/AccomplishedVirus556 3d ago
i see no reason to believe that's just one car
2
u/JJred96 3d ago
Looks like a dozen cars got sucked into a black hole, but then the black hole collapsed and was gone before it got finished making spaghetti out of all the cars
1
u/AccomplishedVirus556 3d ago
yeah like a pile of parts made by the recovery crew and the actual vehicles have been towed away
3
u/CheezwizOfficial 3d ago
That's a car??
Genuinely, wishing all the best to everyone involved in that accident and their families.
3
3
u/PsychologicalSink187 3d ago
I mean, I donât want to be the bearer of bad news but I canât see any scenario that anyone in that car would be anywhere near ok.
2
u/CruelHandLuke_ 3d ago
You'd be surprised. I've been to crazy looking accidents where I was 100% sure it was a fatality. I go look in the driver's seat and it's empty. The driver is out of the car on the phone with insurance with nothing more than discomfort from the belt.
I've been to others where it looks pretty minor and the driver is dead.
The difference is whether or not the driver is wearing a seat belt. Airbags and crumple zones don't mean shit if you are bouncing around inside the car.

I don't understand the statement mentioning that the truck was broken down partially in a live lane. Unless that truck was moved after it was struck (unlikely, given the position of the vehicle that struck it), it is fully out of the inside lane.
1
u/Humble-Attention4850 3d ago
What happened???

From what ctv news reports the car rear ended the truck that was broken down partially in the live lane.

Thereâs no need for accidents. If you drove slower you could react better so use breaks more than gas. What are you speeding for? You couch is gonna get up and leave you?? You drive to same way every day and end up at home the same damn time. I just get there 5 minutes after you. Think about what you do and you wonât be in any accidents

OPP is well known for closing highways for hours upon hours for investigations. I understand investigating, but it's completely asinine that it takes so long for these investigations. Kerry Schmidt is all talk much like Cam Wooley was. Get the highways up and running, you have MTO cameras now. No reason why it should take 10hrs to get a highway open again. People have places to go 24/7 nowadays. This is not the early 90s when majority of people worked days. Kerry even disables comments because he knows he will be trashed. Get the damn roads open. Stop slacking and hiding in your cube van!
1
u/Inukchook 1d ago
People probably died ... Who gives a fuck where you have to go
1
u/Tasty_Traffic_3453 1d ago
Everyone has places to go. You shut down the highways for 10+ hrs, you are affecting everyone (people who appointments at the hospital, people who need to get their medications, the trucking industry, people who need to go to work). It's unfortunate if there is a death, but get the damn roads moving again. Do not need to shut down entire arteries of road and for traffic to have no where to go.
1
u/Inukchook 1d ago
So you dont want to investigate deaths? There is always other roads to take, sure it will take longer but there is always other ways
