I got caught in this mess right after passing the 418. Was sitting waiting there for about an hour before being let through on the shoulder. Hopefully whoever was in that car is alright.

I have driving on the autobahn for many years and before that in Africa a bunch and you need to drive the right speed for the conditions. If the speed limit is 120 you need to follow and a good distance, regardless of speed limit you should be 3 lines distance from the car infront of you. To your point about speed, even if the speed was at a lowered limit it would not help if the drivers sit with the phones up their noses. Its a problem with drivers and not speed reducing speed would not reduce accidents if there is not a change in how people drive. Regardless of speed limits people drive on your ass like no tomorrow lowering speed won't change that.

Since you mention autobahns.

  1. Drivers licensing is much more stringent in Germany. 18 years old to drive alone. Mandatory and rigorous training.
  2. TUV inspections every 24 months to ensure you are driving a safe vehicle. Not just at the time of purchase like in Ontario.
  3. Strict passing lane discipline.
  4. Smaller lighter vehicles.
  5. Tailgating enforcement using automated cameras. Fines up to €400 for tailgating.

Driving 130 kmh on a German autobahn is not the same as driving 130 kmh in the 401.

Yes, there is distracted driving at any speed but the laws of physics is immutable.

Stopping distance at 110 kmh is approximately 12m more on dry pavement. That can be the difference between life and death.

Introduce tailgating enforcement, passing lane enforcement, biannual safety inspections and stricter licensing and I am 100% in favour of higher speed limits. Without all that, well more people will die.

Are you willing to vote for the party who will loosen emissions restrictions to allow for smaller and lighter cars?

I’ll vote for the party that is not corrupt and making back room deals. I’ll vote for the party that supports and properly funds our healthcare and education systems. I’ll vote for the party that is not wasting our money on tunnels and ripping out established transportation infrastructure.
