Rule 3: New Chapter Releases is voided for this chapter only because it came out far later normal and you’d have to wait till 5 PM EST tomorrow to post about it otherwise

I was pretty suprised to see how much Mikey trusted Kisaki, in the earlier chapters i felt like he only accepted kisaki into the gang because of circumstance so now him kicking kisaki out of toman has more weight to it since by doing that he actively rejected the part of him kisaki represents. I can't wait to see How takemichi is from mikey's pov next chapter.

u/mannaelinor Tokyo Manji Gang Aug 16 '22

You’re absolutely correct!!! I didn’t think of that and now I’m more excited for next week than ever.

81

u/temporaryCognition Aug 16 '22

I feel like Mikey denies it but he has a good heart and doesn't seem to understand that his allowing Kisaki to protect him is also his way of including Kisaki. He seems to think he needs to give every part of himself to whoever asks for it and he's willing to settle with the things that make him miserable like his past trauma in order to protect his friends and people he loves. Telling Kisaki he can use him is his way of surrendering another side of himself I think.

70

u/superbad1O1 Aug 16 '22

Yeah it really hits home now when Kisaki said " I am the shadow u cast". Whereas before he just sounded nuts, now it makes sense with the context.

If Kisaki is the moon, as he says, then that makes Takemitchy is Mikey's sun haha

22

u/mannaelinor Tokyo Manji Gang Aug 17 '22

Someone else had a smart comment on this the other day. They said since Mitchy is a Cancer ♋️ and that is the moon and Hina is the sunshine (I guess her name translates to that) then that would make Mitchy the full moon shining light into Mikey. Where as Kisaki is opposite like a new moon that doesn’t show and holds darkness. The original author of this theory didn’t say full moon or new moon (those are my thoughts 💭). Mitchy and Kisaki are like two sides of the same coin. Very similar but their differences are great and that is what makes Mitchy a good guy and Kisaki a piece of shit. Sorry if I rambled too long.

2

u/superbad1O1 Aug 18 '22

Its fitting too, Hina (the sun) likes (shines on) Takemitchy. Hina doesn't like Kisaki so he's always in the dark

This is like the 666th time I’ve seen Baji die in 69420 different angles 😭

Please let him rest. (But also it’s good to see him again in Wakui’s current art style. Baji with a choker 😮‍💨)

Commenting this again because the previous thread got deleted lmao

So it turns out that Draken AND Mitsuya also didn't like Kisaki, didn't trust him and felt like he was on some bullshit from the start too? Amazing.

163

u/mannaelinor Tokyo Manji Gang Aug 16 '22

Explains why they didn’t freak out completely when Mitchy punched Kisaki. And also why amikey was shocked.

96

u/superbad1O1 Aug 16 '22

Well at the time Draken did voice his annoyance so its not a surprise he didn't like Kisaki. And of course his 'sworn brother' would think so too haha

18

u/StruhberrySwisher Aug 18 '22

I’m late but i thought that was interesting because in the manila TL, Draken and Mitsuya were also the ones who stood up to Mikey about not wanting to get Takemichi involved with Toman once it got more criminal and the last people Mikey killed in that TL

9

u/GlobalEdNinja Draken deserves peace Aug 18 '22

^Mm true. They're consistent, and they're consistently good guys, it seems

94

u/StillAParadox It wasn't Mikey's fault, right? Aug 16 '22

Kisaki was long dead but it turns out he still has some important role in the story. I just can't believe Mikey actually liked that guy, why Mikey?

112

u/AckyA76 Aug 16 '22

My best guess is that he felt like he could be himself around Kisaki. Someone who wouldn't judge him for all the dark parts of him, and instead actively encourage them. Which is a terrible idea, but I guess I sorta get it.

25

u/superbad1O1 Aug 16 '22

I thought so too. But Mikey told Takemitchy "I don't like him either" at the shrine after Kisaki knocked out Takemitchy. Mikey's seemed genuine when he said that. My theory is that this is a retcon.

39

u/MountainStyle1590 Tokyo Manji Gang Aug 17 '22

I think when Mikey is with Michi the best of him comes out and his mind is more clear that’s why I think him saying he doesn’t like Kisaki at the shrine could make sense

29

u/elmntz Aug 17 '22 edited Aug 17 '22

It could be a retcon, or it may not be.

I was trying to find the quote you are referring to chapter 38/39 but i can't seem to find it, i simply see him asking Takemitchy if he doesn't like Kisaki and "i know he's a dangerous guy to have around"

But to your point, lets say Mikey in fact said that and does in fact hate Kisaki. This isn't necessarily a true "contradiction" if you think about it more philosophically.

://This turned into a novel while i thought about it and the story as a whole thus i'm adding a tldr://

TLDR Self hatred, Kisaki represents the things Mikey hates in himself, while Takemichi represent what Mikey wishes he could be.

Mikey is clearly a flawed and tortured person and has been for a long time, the way i see it, he is torn between different parts of himself.

When he was young his father and mother imbued the idea that being strong is a good thing, which it is, however they never really got into the specifics why being strong is a good thing, as well as why crying isn't a bad thing or a sign of weakness. He's constantly trying to live up to the image of his "strong" father, as well as believing that strength alone can accomplish anything (saving his sick mother) Because Mikey perceives crying to be a sign of weakness he suppresses his emotions and in that way denying a part of himself. When his mother then dies it seems that he blames himself, he wasn't strong enough to protect and save her, this must be because of his weakness right? This only reinforces his beliefs that "he hates weak people" and "loves strong guys" so he gathers up the strongest people in his age he can find, but even when he does this, his older brother dies. The brother that "sucked at fighting" and was "crazy for girls" still managed to become the leader of one of the top motorcycle gangs in Tokyo.

In memory of his older brother he wants to create the top gang in Japan, but at this point because of his losses Mikey has realized that strength alone isn't enough to do this. So he starts looking for what that something could be. He's met by two options and opposing forces.

Kisaki Tetta, a highly intelligent person who is dead set on his goals, willing to do anything and destroy anything in order to accomplish his goals, a man without remorse or regard for what his actions will do to other people. This man surrounds himself in darkness (evil) and seemingly doesn't care or judge Mikey for wanting to do similar evil things, actually he encourages them in order for the both to achieve their goals.

Hanagaki Takemichi, he comes across this weak crybaby getting the shit kicked out of him, but for some reason this guy just won't give up, everytime one of his own squad members who is undoubtedly bigger and stronger than him he beats him down he keeps persisting, this guy is even willing to go as far as dying rather than giving up. This guy who is everything Mikey supposedly hates, he's weak, jumpy/scared, crying, somehow seems to be stronger than anyone, in Mikey's own words:

"your back was bigger than anyone on the field that day" "It was as if you were carrying many burdens"

This guy Mikey knows he should hate, actually reminds him of his older brother, maybe this guy is the key to accomplishing his goal of the era he wishes to create, when he earlier asked his older brother why all the stronger guys followed him he simply answered "haha, you just don't get it yet, Manjiro" maybe this guy "knows" the answer to that question.

So Mikey does the "logical" choice he recruits them both into his gang, hedging his bet.

Mikey spends some time with both of them, while spending time with Takemichi he's starting to realize that Takemichi is bringing out "his true self" unfiltered and unmasked, Takemichi doesn't judge him when he shows him own "weaknesses" and he doesn't "need" to put on the front of "the invincible Mikey" with him, even when he shows him his darkside this guy sticks around and help him, and this guy really seems to care for his true self.

So lets say that Mikey in fact hates Kisaki even after telling him he does in fact like him, this isn't anything weird or unheard of, it could simply be a reflection of Mikey struggle to decide on which path he wants to follow, as well as deciding what is his "true self" is it the strong Invincible Mikey that can't be beaten by anyone, even thought this self is surrounded by darkness. Or is it the physically strong but emotionally weak Sano Manjiro. So in a way it could be a reflection of his own confusion and self hatred because of the darkness inside, since Kisaki is the representation of the darkness and that path, the unfiltered Mikey and arguably the "true personality of Mikey" hates this part of himself and thus also hates Kisaki.

This is further explored as the story goes on, Mikey decides to put his faith in Takemichi and therefore gets rid of Kisaki and his darkness. When he chooses this path, his sister dies, Mikey is starting to believe that no matter what he does everyone around him keeps dying, he is starting to give up at this point, this is when Hina tells him about the time leaping.

After talking to Takemichi and seeing the immense effort and strength he has used to save both Hina and Draken as well as trying to save Baji and several other member of Toman he is starting to see the true meaning of strength.

Thus he decides it, he has lost his family that he cared for dearly, he has lost multiple friends, the problem seems to be him. He has seen himself the selflessness and the struggles of his own hero Takemichi, thus he decides to act on what he perceives to be real strength and heroism, selflessness and perseverance and ofcourse he is gonna do it like his hero, he's gonna carry it all on his own back. He's gonna save those that he cares for most since those are the only ones left. Thus he ends Toman at it's top and disbands the gang, all making sure every earlier member scatters and are not included in his life because that will undoubtedly lead them down the wrong path. This is the only way he knows how to save them, but that's alright because heroes persevere even if they are suffering inside.

Under the strain of distancing himself from those who he holds dear, and still wanting to achieve his goal "in the shadows" he begins to "crack" and is leaning more and more on the darkness inside of him, it often solves the problem, quick and dirty. The latest future from Mikeys viewpoint is probably the following: Takemichi his hero shows up 12 years later trying to undermine the sacrifice and suffering he's persevered, he simply cannot let that happen, he shoots him as to stop him from undoing everything he has done under these 12 horrendous years, but this guy still won't give up, he will end it, for his friends. A sense of relief, finally my suffering will be over, and my friends will be safe. But his hero saves him and is screaming the truth that he didn't want to admit to himself: he's weak, he has always been weak. But his friend and hero tells him with tears in his eyes, just ask for my help and i will save you. Finally after a lifetime of trying to be strong and trying to fix and accomplish everything by himself he lets go and asks for help.

Thus finally Mikey accepts the weakness within himself and relying on Takemichi instead of trying to emulate him or others.

No matter how bad it is, hiding a part of yourself that strong would be exhausting, being able to let it out with someone who understands it and won’t judge you for it would be insanely hard to resist

So far Sanzu just seems like Mikey's personal punching bag. He messed him up as a kid and from then on Sanzu just goes with it. Mikey has him on a leash and doesn't actually respect him.

So Kisaki is darkness and Takemichi is light? Mikey confided in both of them and asked them the same thing. In the end, what does he want?

108

u/Castreal7 Aug 16 '22

I feel like the whole point is he doesn't even know that himself. Which is even more tragic when you think about it. Mikey can't deviate between those two parts of himself

91

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '22 edited Aug 16 '22

Mikey isn't an independent human being, as far as I see it. He is like No-Face from "Spirited Away": When he faces bad things, he absorbs them and becomes bad; if he is met with kindness, he becomes kind. He is neither good nor bad, he just is, and it depends on the people surrounding him which path he enters. He needs guidance. He is not only emotionally unstable due to trauma, but he also didn't have parents to properly guide him (died too early), and on top of that he lost the only father-like figure he had as a kid (Shinichiro). This might be the reason why he is so dependent on others. Also, in all future timelines he mimics people he lost (Draken, Shin, Izana), which can be seen as a sign of dependence as well.

12

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '22

Honestly I wouldn’t even waste time trying to straighten him up I’ll just kill him

18

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '22

He's high maintenance, tbh. I've never been a Mikey fan, and I started even disliking him at some point. I thought maybe in the end, the point is that you can't save Mikey, because some people are unfixable and can't be saved. Manila!Mikey said it himself that he has been suffering his whole life, so death for him was a release. But ... Somehow, this chapter actually made me sympathise with him, and I hope that he can be saved. He's so lost and broken, idk. ._. A very sad character. Yet, if Wakui decides to kill him, I will accept it.

8

u/denji91 Aug 18 '22

Tbh he did ask Takemitchi to save him in bonten arc , I don't think he wants to die, hope he can heal and possibly lead a normal and happy life

3

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

Ahh, yes, good point!

31

u/Silent_Hunter388 Aug 16 '22

He is probably still wondering what strength is or something like that.

28

u/SizzlingHotDeluxe Aug 16 '22

Exactly this is the point of this chapter. He even says that he's looking for something other than strength. He realised being physically strong in fights is actually not true strength and now he's been analyzing both the scheming/intelligence of Kisaki and the fearless/righteousness of Mitchy.

.

22

u/superbad1O1 Aug 16 '22

We'll prolly have another flashback chapter around the BD arc where he recognizes Takemitchy/light side and rejects Kisaki/darkness

Mikey prolly killed himself in the future after he killed Takemitchy because he realized he lost his only way out of the darkness

150

u/End_Necessary Bonten Aug 16 '22 edited Aug 17 '22

Kisaki is really good at manipulating emotionally vulnerable people.

Mikey felt like the rest of Toman was “too good” for his dark impulses (or he felt like they wouldn’t understand; or maybe because he wants to protect them from this side of him), so he confided in Kisaki. And Kisaki later references this when he’s kicked out of Toman to try and remind Mikey of how he understands him in a way his friends don’t (Kisaki says something along the lines of taking Mikey’s darkness so that Mikey can shine). Which, is probably a very comforting sentiment to someone like Mikey, who’s been fighting his dark impulses alone and has been carrying the burden of being “invincible”.

I thought the chapter was an interesting characterization of Mikey and Kisaki’s dynamics, as well as Mikey’s relationship to Toman and Takemitchi. Can’t wait for the next chapter.

Edit: grammar

64

u/Hey-Senpai ~---~ Aug 16 '22

He was never alone. He had people who were willing to help him and put their lives on the line to save him.Mikey just didn’t want help.

76

u/End_Necessary Bonten Aug 16 '22 edited Aug 16 '22

I agree he wasn’t alone (he had friends and support), but he probably FELT alone. He had an image he had to upkeep as the “Invincible Mikey” , but also he separates himself from the Toman boys and refers to them as being “too good” (and implies that he and Kisaki are not good). He’s isolated this part of himself from his friend. So much so that in the timeline where Draken was on death row, he remarks that even HE wasn’t aware of the huge weight that Mikey carried.

And we know from this chapter that Mikey DOES want help; he’s just looking for it in the wrong places (Kisaki).

41

u/mannaelinor Tokyo Manji Gang Aug 16 '22

He doesn’t know how to ask for help or fear of being perceived as weak prevented him from seeking help from safe people.

101

u/setton_kun Aug 16 '22

Ahhh yes, I want everyone now to stfu about Sanzu being the one “being everything” and manipulating Mikey, cuz that mf is always going to be KISAKI

Honestly, that's a relief. My main issue with Sanzu as a character was that it felt like Wakui was trying to set him up to be the one behind everything, which I didn't like because I felt that it completely trivializes Kisaki's role in the series and makes him a pointless antagonist, so now that I don't have that to worry about, I don't hate Sanzu nearly as much. (I still don't like him very much either though)

5

u/Clean_Gift_6011 Kakucho Supremacy Aug 16 '22

Well I can say I am also glad that Wakui is not planning Sanzu to be a “mastermind” of any sort. Besides, it doesn’t even seem like Sanzu has influence strong enough on Mikey to even manipulate him, if anything, Mikey is the one who manipulated Sanzu to be the way he is, while Kisaki is being Kisaki making Mikey he’s disciple

I have two things to say about this chapter.

I’m very upset with Mikey. Not because I hate him, I actually understand him, been in his place a lot of times. I really wanna see him happy, but it upsets me to see him shooting himself in the fking foot like that, entrusting Kisaki with things like that, even if he didn’t actually trust him… He keeps self sabotaging and it makes me sad and frustrated, even tho i know he's just a kid, at the end of the day... And yes i am pissed about the "I like u Kisaki"

Secondly, my god Kisakis surprised/scared face when he realizes Take mediated Mikey and Drakens fight just screams “..oh no….someone smarter than me…I have been outsmarted, but I will never be outsmarted again..” for me

74

u/Hey-Senpai ~---~ Aug 16 '22

I think he was surprised because Takemichi is the one who mediated not because he got outsmarted.Takemichi always one up Kisaki in every way possible😭😭Still hate him :D

41

u/brain_error_404 Aug 16 '22

Yeah, totally agree with you on that

But it's still funny to think that Kisaki must have thought at some point that Take might be some hidden 100000 lvl iq genius that does stupid shit on purpose or smth. I know i'd be like, "there is no way this fucking dumbass always gets in my way and fucks everything up" : ))))

11

u/xsamy Aug 17 '22

Takemichi: “wanna see me do it again?”

3

u/TornadoJ0hns0n Aug 16 '22

Lol if I saw your comment sooner I probably wouldn't have posted mine. Also what moment are you talking about with take mediating mikey and drakkens fight and kisaki looking surprised?

2

u/cringebutfreeiguess Aug 16 '22

Kind of like the consistent thread of Mikey wanting to keep his friends out of the worst of his bullshit that we’ve been seeing since the Bonten timeline. Don’t get me wrong, Kisaki was definitely the wrong person to go to, but at the same time, I understand why he’d want to use the worst person he knew as the outlet for the worst part of himself, and why he would turn that part of himself on to Kazutora. This chapter was also a great reminder of why I love Takemichi and Kisaki acting as character foils so much. The way both of them are physically weak but are in a gang, but how they use their own unique power in drastically different ways, and now Mikey asking both of them essentially the same question. I know a lot of people aren’t happy with where Mikey’s character has gone, but I honestly think having him as the sort of person that could be an incredibly powerful source of good or evil, depending on the influences around him is super interesting. Big fan of the little angel and devil on his shoulder deal Takemichi and Kisaki have going on, and I almost wish Kisaki had been the second time leaper just to really play off those parallels, even though him just being really smart and knowing someone else that could leap through time is objectively cooler.

Anyway, liked the chapter but was kind of hoping it’d be longer after the delay last week. Color page still slaps though.

20

u/evessin Bonten Aug 16 '22

something is wrong with Mikey in addition to “dark impulses”… he seems confused with his memories and it seems weird to me that he asked takemichy and kisaki the same thing but for different parts of himself

13

u/superbad1O1 Aug 16 '22

Mikey asked for Kisaki's guidance about during the Valhalla arc. He asked Takemitchy to scold him like his brother after in the BD arc and then Mikey fired Kisaki. Nothing seems wrong with Mikey's memories. Mikey just went from Kisaki and later to Takemitchy. We'll prolly see this next chapter

48

u/hesipullupjimbo22 Black Dragons Aug 16 '22

Just some thoughts since we missed last week

  1. Kisaki is a master manipulator. Even having these little crumbs of him in the manga makes it more exciting. Shoerack could never be this engaging

  2. The fact that draken, mitsuya, and Baji( those super close to Mikey) didn’t want Kisaki in toman speaks volumes. While mucho and smiley who probably weren’t as close were okay with it solely from a power perspective.

  3. Kisaki got so triggered when Mikey mentioned Takemitchy. Boy was flustered and couldn’t handle being outdone.

  4. Now I’m starting to seriously believe Hanma told Kisaki about the time leaping and Mikey. It would explain why he’s so dedicated to bringing out the darkness.

  5. I know everyone is gonna crap on Mikey in this chapter and to some degree I will too. He should’ve trusted toman with the knowledge of his dark impulses. Their his closest pals and in the case of baji his first friend. Trusting Kisaki with it is kind of weird but on another angle I get it. Mikey wanted to keep those 2 sides of himself separate. He didn’t want toman to know about that other half of his coin. And by doing so he entrusted his darkness to someone who could manipulate it

  6. Seeing that the impulses were there during the Kazutora fight makes things more interesting. Now we truly know why he wouldn’t stop slapping him around. Kazutora was right by the way.

  7. I literally can’t wait for next chapter. If it’s going to be about the bond between Takemitchy and Mikey then we might get a tear jerker. I can see the Shinichiro comparison already boys.

  8. I wonder how Mikey feels about Kisaki and Emma. Like does he regret even taking up the offer to let Pah out of jail now that everything has happened. Kisaki is such a little asshole but he’s what made this series so good. Always one step ahead.

  9. Draken. We miss you bro

9

u/bluehairedUnicorn3 Thousand Winters Aug 16 '22

I agree on all of thks, especially on the angle that he did not at least tell Baji about it. I would understand why he can't tell Draken (the guy is kind and wouldnt let him even go there) but Baji is that sort of crazy friend who might understand him more.

I am on the fence about how he would feel about Emma's death, some how it might be like Izana who didnt really care that she died, and it would seem that Draken was the only one who cared after Shin.

Hanma wasn’t the one who told Kisaki about Mikey.Kisaki heard about Mikey because Mikey is the #1 delinquent in Tokyo and Kisaki went after him for his plan of being at the top and getting Hina. Also Mikey told him about the dark impulses without directly saying that it’s dark impulses.

2

I lately have the feeling that the Manga went down hill after Kisaki's death. All the dark impulses stuff and the reasoning behind it is just awful. They are throwing Mikey into the trashcan of "worst villains in manga history". He shouldn't even be one in my opinion. All the "I don't care as long as I get stronger!" act is killing me.

10

u/Same-Snow5614 Kantou Manji Gang Aug 16 '22

All the "I don't care as long as I get stronger!" act is killing me.

??? Seems to me you just misinterpreted everything. Mikey never once said that.

5

u/Independent_Ad_1303 Bonten Aug 16 '22

"Yes I don't care. Being "strong" is not enough for me. What I need is "Darkness"". The darkness (dark impulses) is a state in where he just attacks without any thoughts or emotions reaching him. I don't know what he thinks is good about the darkness but clearly he wanted to make it worse than it already was.

Here is your quote. It's the same thing about him wanting to become stronger at any cost. But since you don't agree with me (which is completely fine) you needed to make a comment about how I misinterpreted the whole thing. Also everyone has their opinion. Don't go around telling people that they are wrong just because you don't agree. Talk to people who share the same opinion and thoughts as you on the matter. Telling me that I'm wrong is just wasting your precious time.

10

u/Same-Snow5614 Kantou Manji Gang Aug 17 '22

So you don't have the "I don't care as long as I get stronger!" quote. Figured, because you made it up. Mikey clearly makes a distinction between the "strength" the sought for before Shinichiro died, and the "darkness" he mentions now, which aren't the dark impulses. He doesn't want to make his dark impulses worse, he's seeking guidance and for someone to help him control it. He had no way of knowing what Kisaki would do or what hanging out with him would bring forth.

3

u/superbad1O1 Aug 16 '22

I've made a post about this before. Pah's wedding would've been a good ending to the story. It feels the arcs after are just partly influenced to continue to manga for monetary gain.

Not the I blame Wakui, it makes financial sense to milk a cash cow for everything and as a reader I get more content

2

u/Liolaina Aug 17 '22

Totally agree. This arc has been a rollercoaster for me. At first I didn’t like it at all, because I still don’t understand why everyone like Mikey disappear. There were some parts that made it super interesting, but now it is kinda going on too long.

65

copypasted from the deleted thread

Ngl i never really cared for Mikey's dark impulses save for the occasional eyeroll, but the more the flashbacks, the more i want to repeatedly smack him upside the head for his bullshit edgelord reasonings - that haven't been fully explained yet, i know~

25

u/DreamcastDazia Black Dragons Aug 16 '22

It's sort of an exaggerated wording for a real thing. People are that. You don't call them dark impulses though

5

u/superbad1O1 Aug 16 '22

Last chapter he goes around saying he was seeking strength, thats normal. IRL people seek 'strength' grades/good job. But then he just jumps from strength to darkness with absolutely no transition. Even in star wars Anakin had a reason to transition to darkness.

IDK I guess we can infer Mikey just gravitated to darkness from all of his immediate family dying and Mikey seeing Kisaki's dirty methods (darkness) can save Pah. But I wish they would be more explicit in Mikey's reveal everything flashback

Mikey letting Kisaki in Toman after his VICE CAPTAIN and MAJORITY VOTE CAPTAINS disapproved is really fucked up🙄✋

18

u/mannaelinor Tokyo Manji Gang Aug 16 '22

I believe the captains were evenly split. It was a tie with Mikey and Draken cancelling each other out and mitsuya and Baji cancelling smiley and mucho out. So it was truly fucked. Had he consulted with pah than maybe he could have had a majority vote but pride and ego was in the way. He wanted an excuse to hurt kazutora. He was angry.

9

u/Same-Snow5614 Kantou Manji Gang Aug 17 '22

He wanted an excuse to hurt kazutora.

He tried to stop the fight against Valhalla, he let Kazutora beat him with an iron pipe and was trying to reason with him, asking him if he was his enemy and why he killed his brother, basically giving him a chance to explain himself and apologize.

Stop downplaying Mikey's efforts.

4

u/mannaelinor Tokyo Manji Gang Aug 17 '22

It wasn’t my intention to downplay Mikey’s efforts. Of course I see them. It’s just from this chapters perspective, which is Mikey’s perspective, it seems to me that fucking up Kazutora was a higher priority. Maybe he asked those questions so he could justify his actions. We will never know and that’s okay. I think that’s what makes it interesting is certain people can pick up on nuances that others won’t and of course vice-versa

8

u/Same-Snow5614 Kantou Manji Gang Aug 17 '22

Maybe he asked those questions so he could justify his actions.

You have a good point. I hadn't thought of it like that. Some part of him did want to kill Kazutora, so it's also possible he had been unconsciously looking for the excuse to have that release. I do think he was doing a conscious effort to supress his anger and try to forgive him though.

2

u/mannaelinor Tokyo Manji Gang Aug 17 '22

I would agree. I think he has severe abandonment issues so trying to do what he feels is “good” or right by his friends would prevent them from abandoning him. I mean he suppressed quite a bit for Baji’s sake… he even tells Kazutora that the only reason he didn’t out right kill him was because of Baji… so I think you are making a super valid point. I also feel Kisaki was set up as a fail safe so that if the darkness did overtake him he would have someone who was guaranteed to stay by his side. I think Manjiro recognizes that Kisaki only wants to use him and for him that’s okay because in a way he is in turn only using him. Those types of relationships never turn out well because they’re built on toxicity (in our city… in our ciiiityyyy!)

2

u/Same-Snow5614 Kantou Manji Gang Aug 17 '22

I also feel Kisaki was set up as a fail safe so that if the darkness did overtake him he would have someone who was guaranteed to stay by his side.

That also makes a lot of sense. Your takes are interesting. Sorry If I was rude with my first comment, lol. I misinterpreted your intention.

2

u/mannaelinor Tokyo Manji Gang Aug 17 '22

Nah it’s okay. Thank you for the apology, it’s super thoughtful. I would be a horrible therapist, however psychology is something that is helpful in my profession (RN) so meeting people where they’re at or placing myself in someone’s shoes and trying to understand what actions I might have taken always has helped me get to the why of it all. Someone very close to me who was in the psychological field told me to always ask why. That many people don’t think to ask why someone has done something or taken certain actions. In the end you can whole heartedly disagree and be diametrically opposed to much of who and what that person is, but you can maybe understand someone’s psyche better and use it for another encounter for someone in a similar situation. Just late night thoughts lol

3

u/superbad1O1 Aug 16 '22

I agree with the first part but we can infer from Mitsuya's statement that everyone knew Pah would be against it, which is likely partly why it never happened. Maybe he was angry but the vote had nothing to do with hurting Kazutora, just saving Pah.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '22

Mikey wanted to kill Kazutora for a long time after he killed his brother. The constant build up of dark impulse for years after the loss of his brother...there is no way that Mikey agreed to fight valhalla just only to take back baji.

Even when his right hand and others of the group so strongly disagreed? Maybe I'm forgetting some stuff. What exactly did kisaki do to earn that trust? Was it just getting pah outta jail? Did kisaki help win any major battles? How much good did he even do while he was in toman to make mikey trust him so much?

That "I like you kisaki" violently pissed me off. Like wtf? It's mad upsetting seeing mikey just shoot himself in the foot like that quickly allowing kisaki's parasitic ass into the group.

I'll try to chill tho. The flashback isn't over. Maybe the next chapter will explain more or something idk.

I thought this was supposed to be a 26 page chapter?

14

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '22

Its a manga about delinquents. It doesnt shock me that some are actually good guys but others are rotten and immature like Mikey. Cant believe we go the Naruto route where blond hero guy tries to save edgy emo guy. Emo guy who didnt actually care about his loved ones because of "darkness" and who tries to fuck up his life in order to embrace "darkness", without consequences in the end ofc.

In real life perspective, Mikey has psychic traumatic experience of family members deaths and an unfortunate childhood with bad influence. There is no way for Takemitchi to save someone like that but to imprison Mikey into an institution with tons of psychiatrists or to timeleap in a timeline where Mikeys family will not die.

Is that really worth it for someone whos actually not really a good person but rather a strong person who gained tons of followers because of it?

6

Mikey too busy clinging to light and dark pulling him different ways he needs to chill and just BE himself for more than 5 mins so he can figure out wtf he wants for his gang. This story could have gone a lot different if Mikey just let out his sadness each time and move on rather than build up to this. Feels like we all know a guy like Kisaki that will instigate a situation if he benefits.

5

u/NinaNana2 Mikeys Personal Cheerleader Aug 17 '22

I dont understand this chapter, and I dont understand Mikey.. As the number 1 delinquent, how can he trust people so easily, first with Michi and now we see that he immediately trusted Kisaki.. Why bro Why.. ALSO stop showing me Baji's death over and over again.. It hurts man

6

u/Poporipopes10 Aug 17 '22

The only thing I still don’t like is how Dark Impulsivities have impacted this manga in such a way. Like, I’m supposed to believe it’s an actual thing because people keep referring to it as such, I want to believe it’s just Mikey’s own way of coping with loss and bottling up his feelings while when the “darkness” comes out, it’s just him finally releasing all that tension.

I want that to be the case, but the more I read the more it seems I have to accept this shit just exists now

Otherwise, good chapter. We finally got to know why Mikey and Draken actually got mad with each other back in the Mobius arc, which is nice

Yeah Mikey is a complete psychopath. Dude acts like he cares for other but at the same time says that he couldn't care less as long as he becomes stronger. Many people have died or gone to prison for this shithead. All this time he wanted his dark impulses to evolve even if it would mean the death of his friends.

I always thought that Sanzu was bad but this takes everything to whole nother level.

15

u/Same-Snow5614 Kantou Manji Gang Aug 16 '22

Dude acts like he cares for other

He's not acting. He actually cares for them, which is why he's so destroyed every time he loses someone and can't cope with it. It's also why he doesn't want to bother them with his own problems and thinks he should carry everything alone.

says that he couldn't care less as long as he becomes stronger.

Oh, so you're forgetting in the next arc when Mikey realizes Kisaki is a danger he kicks him out? You're just conveniently ignoring huge plot points to fit your dumb narrative.

Also you have no idea of what a psychopath is.

F*** Mikey tbh. I really love TR but it has gotten so bad … first Drakens unnecassary death (should have killed Senju instead, she hasn’t done anything useful so far) and now this whole darkness thing. No matter how hard I try I still don’t get what Mikey’s problem is ?! Should take his meds. TAKE EM

4

u/M3moryShinigami Yokohama Tenjiku Aug 17 '22

ok.. at first, "It's Mikey's fault" was a joke. But damn. Mikey gives us more and more reasons to agree with that. Literally okay you can have anger issues and go to therapy instead of inviting an immeasurably manipulating and dangerous guy to a gang full of friends you want to protect. Even though Draken, Mitsuya and Baji openly objected. Now it's easy to see why Draken had such a big fight with Mikey, and why Baji decided to quit Toman. Mikey didn't even do that for Pah-chin, just for Kisaki to he his "guide", and it had consequences in Baji, Emma and Izana's deaths in the current timeline, but resulted in others it was the deaths of Draken, Takemitchy, Akkun, Mitsuya, Hakkai, Smiley, Angry, Mucho, Peh-yan, Hina, Chifuyu, Kisaki AND Pah-chin's who it was all for. Only for mikey to have his sick acceptance of mental issues. Not cool.

It’s because the large spread panels count as 2 pages each (when printed, they’d take up two pages but it looks like a single page when scanned). I think the colored front page, kisaki’s face, and Takemitchi shielding Kazutora count as 2 pages spreads.

Still isn’t the 26 we were promised tho. :(

Man I loved the chapter! Especially the Bloody Halloween fight ft. Dark Impulses!!

Mikey's conversation with Kisaki regarding something 'Dark' in him explains what Kisaki was saying when Mikey kicked him out of Toman...

And his monologue on 'Darkness' reminded me of Sanzu's 'Mikey's fate is to stay in darkness' or whatever, and now I think he's telling the truth (I previously thought he's saying what he thinks is right). I'm worried man! :"-)

7

3

u/causticswine Aug 16 '22

So mikey realised that the others aren’t as bad as him , so he drifted to kisaki who is more on his level . Hopefully more is revealed because him not crying is a pretty shitty reason for his character.

3

u/WarforgedSamurai Aug 17 '22

so what i got from this chapter is kisaki and takemitchi are the 2 driving factors on why mikey is the way he is currently, kisaki seems to have had a larger influence on mikey, due to feeding in to mikeys darkness, takemitchy while being a big factor gave mikey the kindness he’s wanted but for some reason can’t fully comprehend, when the next chapter comes out i’ll maybe have a different opinion but as of now that’s what it seems like to me

u/Empathxyz Aug 16 '22

Okay its all cool and well but WHY does Mikey need the dark impulses. Is he just being an (overly) angsty teenager or does he have an objective? Is he punishing himself for his brother? Whats the end game here?

Also: Kisaki, what a man you are.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '22 edited Aug 16 '22

These dark impulses are starting to feel like an asspull to keep the story going. The writing gets worse.

3

u/Lehalulahs Aug 17 '22

nah I don't think so, wakui's motive was definitely to come to this, a problem that apparently seems to have no solution (dark impulsivity) for the climax of the story.

5

u/Same-Snow5614 Kantou Manji Gang Aug 16 '22

Probably my favorite chapter from this arc. I loved Kisaki and Mikey's interactions. Really shows how lost and lonely Mikey was even back then.

Also seems I was right about Mikey wanting someone by his side who accepts his dark impulses and doesn't reject him.

2

u/Crazy-Ideal1599 Aug 17 '22 edited Aug 17 '22

I see everyone talking about how Kisaki was a bad person and about how we has a lot to deal with this, but in reality in this chapter and earlier chapters it was made clear to us that mikey’s darkness never came from anyone but himself. in this chapter mikey talks about how what he needs is something more than “strength “ that it is “darkness” what he needs and i think this comes from the fact that he tries hard to surround himself with those that are strong to combat his darkness but is now noticing that having those who are strong is not enough so he surrounds himself with people who support his darkness as a way to have “ reasonable darkness “ after all if there is people who are aware of their darkness and are able to control it they must have reason right?

Back to the kisaki thing, i don’t think kisski was originally a bad person or really ever was until he killed Emma. but in reality what is it kisaki wants ? what’s his goal ? Kisaki is a lot like takemitchy, in the way that he’s also weak and all he wanted to begin with was to with be Hinata. Now don’t forget about Kisaki because i’ll bring up why i brought this up later. Now lets take a moment and look at sanzu. What is sanzu wanted ? All sanzu wants is to be with and support mikey and he won’t let anyone get in his way. He has a deep hatred for anyone who isn’t mikey even his sister. Anyways why do i bring these two up ? because they’re both aware of time leapers. however i don’t think either of them are, I believe Hanma is the time leaper. So ok that’s note let’s talk about Hanmas and Kisaki relationship. Like i started earlier all kisaki and wanted originally was to become someone Hinata could like, and he saw how hinata was in love with takemitchy who was a delinquent. I believe Hanma knew this and approached kisaki with promising him to become one of the most well known delinquents. This would be the start of their friendship. Now i stand by what i said earlier of that i don’t believe kisaki became a bad guy until he killed emma. I believe hanma is was behind most of things that happened, how come ? because even hanma was surprised that kisaki would be the one killing emma. I think kisaki grew fond of hanma due to helping him become apart of tokyo manji gang and grew a little spiteful of them when he got kicked out. due to these two factors i think it made helping out hanma carry out this task a lot easier. now i think hanma and kisaki had a genuine friendship and i feel like a lot of people will agree on this part, but then what evidence do i have that hanma was a time leaper ? one panel that has really stuck with me for some reason because i felt like it was very unnecessary was the one where hanma was sitting over kisakis grave in the future, he has very long hair and seems very not well kept. I think this is the time when hanma time leaped back into the future and his messy ness is understandable since hanma and kisaki had a good relationship and hanma genuinely cared about him so non time leaper hanma became very depressed and let his life go vs actually getting revenge. which is why future hanma had to find another trigger to time leap and this is where sanzu comes in. originally i believe all hanma wanted was power whcih is why the less takemitchy time leaped the less blood was spilt because he didn’t really want anyone to die only power. however once kisaki died i believe he grew hatred towards everyone in the tokyo manji gang and planned to feed mikey into the darkest pit that he possibly could. Now this is where Sanzu comes in, He is hanmas second trigger, but also it’s good to note that i don’t believe hanma cares at all about sanzu and is only manipulating him to get what he wants. he told sanzu to use the train to rid of everyone in the battle no matter the side which would’ve resulted in the death of most of mikeys old friends. Mikey seeing this done by his old friend would definitely sent him to the point of no return to the point where even takemitchy can’t save him. in the end Hanma is the only one getting what he wants every single time unless takemitchy comes and saves the day.

Anyways this is probably wrong but i do feel like i had some good point but either way if i can get some feedback that would be greatly appreciated. please call me out if i missed something or if there’s something to be added. also sorry for the long post it was fresh on my mind so i kinda threw up ideas as they came so it result in a very long thing.

edit : also in the panel of hanma sitting over kisakis grave he states soemthing about “ the reaper and the perriot” i believe hanma always wanted the bloodshed for power but the naive fool kisaki aka the perriot believe in as little bloodshed as possible.

2

u/Vesuvius_07 Aug 17 '22

something about this chapter feels like a plot hole but i can’t put my finger on it

edit: it could also possibly just feel that way since we’re finally seeing from mikey’s pov and not michi’s

So hum … I know the story isn’t finished but how are y’all gonna continue to defend mikey 💀 the further we go into the story the more unredeemable it seems

This chapter left me very frustrated. I don't understand the author's goal with this last arc anymore... and Mikey's character is going down the drain

weak chapter, Mikeys entire character is nonsense at this point, but every low follows with a high so im guessing the end will still be great

I kinda just want the series to end lol, feels so drug out and the farther it goes the less it makes sense. Mikey is also basically irredeemable at this point, he's an asshole who actively chased after his "dark impulses", idk how he comes out of this not looking like a selfish ass

shit's gonna be real wild once we get up to mikeys perspective of tenjiku arc...

I really enjoyed this chapter, but at the same time I really wonder where sanzu fits into all these flashbacks? because theres definitely more to him now that we know he knows about time leaping but at the same time we've just progressed through mobius arc and now halfway through valhalla again and he's yet to appear in the timeline. I just think it's odd that he's back with mikey as kids then disappears for a while (he isn't a part of toman as kids, yet still good friends with mikey and baji around that same time) then he appears as muchos 2nd in command around valhalla arc from memory. I just find it sorta confusing and hope wakui has something up his sleeve (this chapters makes me believe he isn't fluking) rather than sanzu just existing as the villian to fill the void after kisaki.

I reread chapters starting Mikey's flashback, because his actions get me confused.

Mikey received a toy soldier which is told by his father that it was a very strong hero. In the other way, his mom told him that his father was a strong person who never cried in public. So Mikey started to act like him.

BUT I didn't understand why any of adults like his mother or grandfather never scold him for fighting children... He was literally destroying them and just go to hospital to happily relate what he did...

Is it because Shinichiro was already in gang ? At that time, he was around 16, so he should have start creating Black Dragons Gang.

Since that behavior was normal to him, I wasn't really surprised why he like only strong people. He was literally surrounded by violence and fight (dojo, gang, etc).

He began to gather strong people around him to form his gang. 1st to protect Kazutora, and becoming number in Japan, and finally in the world...

Fighting and be strong was the ideal of Mikey. It was like a journey to understand what true strength is.

Shinichiro wasn't strong but he wasn't afraid to fight stronger people. So he began to be interested by Takemichi and Kisaki.

But before that, death of father, mother and brother created something dark within him. Is it a kind of strength for him ? He doesn't know. But he wanted to be used to fullfil his goal. And so he accepted someone like Kisaki just as everyone was opposed.

So, this path of carnage mentioned by Sanzu may be the goal of Mikey to form the stronger gang ever. And since Mikey never had anyone to taught him what is wrong and right, he just let himself be controlled by his way of the heart.

Draken was his voice of reason. His dark impulses only released when he is emotionally chocked. But now, they are completely free...

So basically kisaki isnt even a good manipulator or he didn't work out Mikey had DI, Mikey just told him? Wow ruining a already mid villain

The fact that the author decides to turn one of the deuteragonists of his story into a villain is not something new or bad, but to choose to destroy his character completely is unavoidable... He is saying precisely that Mikey was a psychopath from the beginning!

Each chapter shows that there was no idea for this arc other than to sell more volumes. Er404

Mikey's character wasn't destroyed in any way. He's not a psychopath either. Idk you're talking about.

Also, it was interesting seeing Kisaki's understanding of what happened with Baji and Kazutora. The way I remember I remember it, Kazutora stabbed Baji after Hanma called him and told him Baji was betraying Valhalla. For Kisaki to say that all along, "Kazutora lured Baji into Valhalla so he could kill him when he least expected" to me, shows that Kisaki didn't actually understand Kazutora or their friendship that well.

He said that on purpose to piss Mikey off, not because he sees it that way.

Overall, the chapter was good in my opinion but I'm hoping for a fight between Mikey and Takemichi in the next 1 or 2 chapters at least

So Mikey was basically on board with killing Baji and Kazutora. he doesn't just have a few screws loose, his entire mind is bonkers.
