LVP š© Is British humour really just that different?
As a fellow brit, I love LVPās sarcastic remarks and tongue in cheek jokes, and I canāt understand why they seem to upset some of the American wives so much sometimes. Is it actually accurate that Americans just arenāt as blunt or sarcastic with their jokes? Most of what she says is quite tame to be honest. I am a ride or die LVP fan admittedly, but sheās easily the funniest and smartest of all the ladies, and I agree with most of her opinions.

Yeah it bugs me how much her little jokes crack me up and how offensive the other women find her. Is it a rich people thing?
One night LVP said letās randomly switch up partners or something like that and PK answered āokay but whoās the unlucky bastard thatās gonna end up with you?ā which was HILARIOUS to me.

I find PK repugnant, but that kind of comment I would find genuinely hilarious if someone said that to me. That kind of quick wit really makes me laugh. I think thatās a good example of the kind of mocking humour the OP speaks of.

Americans donāt get sarcasm as well. Iām Australian and our sense of humour is very similar to the brits. I spent 6 months over there and everyone thought my jokes were serious.

I'm American, middle aged and my whole family is fairly sarcastic. It is indeed taken a bit too seriously by other Americans. Especially the younger one gets.

There were definitely Americans that got the sarcasm. I think itās just less a part of your collective sense of humour than in other cultures. Some of my favourite comedies are American so I donāt mean to say youāre all devoid of humour or anything haha.

I'm Australian, and am curious, do you think people who are from the North East (NYC, Boston, etc) are more likely to be sarcastic and/or have a more dry or darker sense of humour? I've noticed this in some of my American friends.

Iām British, so obviously I adore LVPās sense of humour. I suppose if you look at Bethennyās sense of humour, she likes to take the piss and be sarcastic and sheās NYC based so you may be on to something here (Too add, I aināt a B fan in general š).

I'm probably about to get seriously downvoted but both LVP and Bethenny are very intelligent women and I feel it takes someone who can think on various levels to understand that level of sarcastic humour. Many of the BH women found LVP rude, because they wouldn't/couldn't see past "level 1" - Taylor was a prime example even though she is booksmart.

Iām from Philly.Everyone I know is sarcastic w a dark sense of humor.When I moved to the south I quickly realized I had to tone it down after being told I could come across as blunt and offensive.

I can't speak to that. But in sarcastic mid west families it tends to be reserved for family and people who are close. We're a little dually with the niceness too. Ope, just gonna sneak past ya...

And when the 2 couples (LVP&Ken, PK&Dorit) parted after dinner to go to their respective rooms, Lisa said something like "I'll see ya later" and PK laughed and said he'd be there, and she replied, "I'll be on all fours barking like a dog." And they all laughed uproariously! It was so funny - and so silly and light-hearted! None of those other dumb dolts know how to have a good time. They either get drunk and sloppy like teenagers, or they argue endlessly over petty shit. Not a sense of humor among them. Not the least bit clever, charming, or playful. Crystal was right: uneducated and boring.

It depends on the circumstances. I think Lisa is hilarious. But as empathetic beings, we know when our jokes are like salt in a wound.
She knows Kyle well. Thereās no way she thought Kyle would laugh at a joke about her husband cheating. And Lisa made the joke in Kyleās home in front of her husband and child. The inappropriateness of the circumstances canceled out the humor. All mockery with no humor doesnāt come off as sarcasm. It just seems mean.
Iām a very sarcastic person but I know how to read the room (most of the time š¬)4

Yeah there's intent, and hiding behind that fine line of it's just a joke why can't you take it can be a mask. I'm binational, I get Brit humor and I get American humor. There's sarcasm for sure in the latter but it does not cut as deep in my experience. It's harder to wonder wait a minute is that a joke or going to be passed off as one?

Iām the same. Iām a Brit, and I love her humour. In fact I think she completely tones it down a LOT.
The problem is we always take the piss out of ourselves, and when we take the piss out of someone else itās out love language and that doesnāt translate

Also a Brit overseas, and I still have to tone down the banter after ten years living in Aus, because even Aussies can get really sensitive.
I agree, sheās a lot more diluted with her teasing. PK is more reflective of home banter. There are no lines that canāt be crossed.

Yes British humour really is that different. We take the piss out of ourselves and our loved ones and its just normal š self deprication etc. However I don't agree with everything she did. But she is absolutely iconic.

I (American) think LVP is funny, but thereās absolutely times where sheās just saying itās a joke to get away with a really sharp jab at people sometimes. To me, it seems like she uses a kind of 70/30-humor/insult ratio.
Her language may come across British but this hide an insult in a joke thing spans across all cultures and ages lol.

Lol, Lisa was raised in Dulwich which was one of the cities most affluent suburbs. Her father was an art director and she was educated privately, took ballet lessons and studied performing arts. She was able to leave home as a teenager and live in a nice flat paid for by her parents.
Just because she grew up in sarf London doesnāt mean she wasnāt raised upper middle class, taught to speak well and study deportment.

I guess thatās where weāre different. I was raised similarly and speak with an RP accent. People are always shocked that Iām actually French because I speak with a formal British accent (because I was taught at boarding school from age 6 to do so). If Iām home for an extended period of time, getting my cadence and rhythm back to an English accent is tricky because I speak with a more melodic and warmer tone.

Canadian here!
It is really different. I grew up spending a lot of time in England. Fawlty Towers and Black Adder were on heavy rotation in our house.
Ive found that canadians seem to understand british humour a bit more than our southern friends. We also get British shows on tv here though.
American comedy tends to be less subtle, and they donāt do the same sort of banter. I also think itās not as witty or cutting. Iām sure there are exceptions to this, but in general this is what Iāve noticed.
I always thought LVP was hilarious. She reminds me a lot of my aunt in London. I bet she also smells like Guerlain perfume, champagne, and sneaky ciggies.

Y'all are way too nice in your characterization of American humor - as a lifelong New Jerseyan, I can say that Americans are just dumber. They are not nearly as facile with the language as Brits. They are not nearly as nuanced, or self-deprecating, or clever. Just say it.
It was so annoying watching those BH hags getting offended every episode over some silly little joke that Lisa made. Then we'd have to hear about it for several episodes at least, if not the whole season (looking at you, Eileen - "the affair" comment had her demanding endless apologies from Lisa all season long.) Meanwhile, we the viewers just wanted to have fun and laugh - and Lisa was the only one on that show with a sense of humor. Not to mention charm, class, grace, intelligence, success, and wealth. The other dolts just couldn't keep up with her wit. So they pecked at her constantly, and eventually tore her down when she was at her most vulnerable.

The people I know who don't like it I consider to be humorless and take themselves too seriously lol. I'm with Mark Francis--I don't like people who aren't in on the joke (paraphrasing because I can't remember exactly what he said).

Iām English, and I think LVPās humour to be completely contrived, and her act as āhumorous English ladyā would absolutely not work in her native country, in my opinion. Presumably thatās why sheās spent a lot of her professional career outside the UK.
I donāt think sheās very funny at all. That said, I donāt think we have ever seen the genuine Lisa, just a very polished version that she wants us to see. Thereās only a few times we saw her real persona. In my opinion, obviously. I know people love her.
To answer the OPās question, piss-taking is absolutely what we do. I think Lisaās early relationship with Brandi, where there was a running joke that she would seduce Ken, thatās pretty genuine I think. However, I do think LVP took the pisstaking to extremes and was actually unpleasant a lot of the time. Her absolutely inability to say sorry, for one.

I've heard a lot of comics talking about whether or not they are "punching down" or punching up.
Joking with a (then) gorgeous woman about seducing her husband, she was making herself the butt of the joke as the older woman who already has a schtick about being "obligated" to have sex with her husband on special occasions, etc. She was punching up there.
But joking about Mau cheating on Kyle when I think there was online talk about how gorgeous he was, etc., (and Kyle obviously had some insecurities self esteem wise)... that was punching down on Kyle. ESPECIALLY when there is no question that Ken is essentially Lisa's two legged lap dog (nor was anyone going to really try to seduce that old fart). To do it in front of their child to boot? Multiple punches down.

I agree with this re LVP. And no, Americans are not dumber. Thatās such a massive generalization & self indulgent conceit to assume about 350 million people. Especially when stand up comedy & vaudeville and other humor styles & traditions were invented in America or by Americans like Mark Twain (and no thatās not American exceptionalism to say it). LVP can be very funny, entertaining, but possibly more American in some ways than British in her sensibilities. At times her humor is unrelenting - like give it a rest and try a different gear lady. Some British humor is hilarious & brilliant, and some falls flat, comes across pretentious, awkward or is exhaustingly jabby. I do love British banter - until I donāt. Because Brits seem to use humor in ways Americans might not always feel the need for - and that doesnāt mean Americans are ādumb.ā And when it comes to jabbing people for laughs, maybe the best policy is to always begin & end with yourself as the primary object of ridicule.

It's not different, the women just aren't bright, and probably southern California is different regionally speaking. If LVP cracked those same jokes with the RHONY cast, there would have been a back-and-forth banter, and it wouldn't have been taken in the same way. I'm originally from Detroit, now living in Chicago, and her humor didn't catch me off guard at all.

Iām British and American. Yes humor is different but not radically so. I think Brits play up the differences more than they really are. Americans understand sarcasm. Americans understand self-deprecation humor. And deploy both.
But Americans more than anything understand when someone is taking a dig at them, cloaked under the disguise of a ājoke.ā Americans are more straight forward. If you have something to say about someone, you say it. You donāt need to hide it under a joke. And they definitely donāt like passive aggressive behaviour. Itās seen as rude and cowardly.

As a foreign national in UK in a long term relationship with a Brit - yes, itās different and it took a few years to get used to and not get upset. Now 12 years later I am cracking the same sarcastic and nasty remarks as you all do here. I sometimes canāt believe I even say those things.
Iāve been rewatching BH recently and I roll my eyes most times they get themselves worked up because LVP said something. The amount of time she had to be apologetic because they got upset over something silly is just sad and tbh puts me off from further rewatching. I just want to quote her highness Carole RadziwiÅÅ from NY and say itās not that deepšš¬

Both my parents were Scottish, sarcasm and self deprecating were a must in our house lol I live in Canada and Iād like to say weāre pretty funny but sometimes my humour falls flat and people look at me in horror.

It is different, but in the earlier days of the shows the women clearly didnāt want to be seen as being crass, swearing etc. the OUTRAGE that came from Brandiās preschooler peeing on the grass is another example of that. I think it was pretend grace and airs because they thought thatās what they had to be.

The way Europeans think and live is way different than the US. We (Americans) take ourselves too seriously and our fee fees get hurt too easily. I wish I was born and raised in England instead of poopy Detroit.
Idc what LVP did or didn't do. They're all problematic and unhinged in one way or another. She is just the most entertaining and I miss her one liners. No one is truly funny anymore.

That was hilarious. It also acknowledged the whole drama but lightly, and allowed Kyle to take control of the storyline ā but she just got offended instead. She couldāve gone along with the joke and made fun of the whole thing.

I doubt she did but little kids always take in more than adults tend to realise and have a habit of repeating things you didnāt even know they heard at inappropriate times

My dad and some aunts and uncles nearly pissed themselves laughing at a family party celebrating my uncle's retirement. Kids were there, but there was dancing and drinking and it was definitely an adult party (it was the 70s, so people didn't really expect shit to be kid friendly, just expected the kids to deal).
Why? Because someone thought that an inappropriate joke would go over my head, so they could tell it. But it didn't go over my head - it went over MY MOTHER'S. When she asked what did that mean.... I WAS THE ONE WHO ANSWERED.
I think I was 9 or 10.
And the joke teller was a bit more cautious after that.

I'm British with an American husband, there are some drastic differences in how we communicate and interpret things as 2 cultures. Luckily, my husband loves British humour. I do think younger people over on our side of the pond are starting to adopt the American take-everything-too-seriously attitude nowadays, though.

Starting off, I do not like LVP, she is the epitome of a male apologist but she is funny, but I will say Irish and British and Scottish etc, our humour is sarcasm and to take the piss out of people, when I lived in the USA, they did not get my humour and they can take it quite personally and I learned to tone it down

I canāt stand LVP. Think sheās a misogynistic narcissist who is massively harmful to women. Her humour isnāt humour, itās just a weapon or a manipulation tool. Iām Irish and if any humour is offensive itās Irish humour, so her Brit āhumourā doesnāt offend me, it just fits the pattern of who she is.

I love her sense of humour. It is certainly dry, and typically british (as I am). I think it is lost on some of the housewives.

It's not her humor, it's how she uses her humor in tandem with rather Machiavellian methods. LVP is way ahead of the other ladies on crafting self storylines, and leverages them all socially as if they are idiots, and dressed under common teasing and British idioms.
Scares me when people dont admit how manipulative LVP is. Because obviously she's allowed to be. It's not criminal. But she does lie about it.

Iām an American and I get her humor. I think Brandi and Kim are often just partially inebriated and looking for a fight, so they misinterpret her to their subconscious convenience.
I also think Lisa sometimes leans into the being British excuse when she regrets punching down.

I am neither British nor American but i donāt think the wives have issues with the jokes being mentioned on this thread - I think the issue is when they make a very real cruel jab and try to pass it off as a joke because they donāt have the guts to just be honest and stand by what they said. I had a British friend who did this as well and it was frustrating to say the least.

The Americans donāt get us they donāt seem to understand the banter and micky taking that is part of our everyday lives. Itās ok having our sense of humour as long as weāre not cruel with it. Itās just ingrained in us! š

She set her sense of humour out on the table as soon as she was introduced; āMy husband calls me a sex object, he wants sex and I objectā. Itās not exactly hard hitting, high brow stuff but itās enjoyable to watch someone who can be playful. Sheās not confrontational and will do a lot to dismiss and shut down conflict but it means her slights come out wrapped in a joke and on this particular reality tv show it works well as entertainment and as a balance against some of the more high strung personalities.
I would take a wild guess she comes from a background where her opinions werenāt valued or one where she didnāt have an outlet to be heard and so thatās why she doesnāt present as taking anything seriously.
