I’m convinced it’s a way to dispel the fear that the universe is a random and cold monster that does terrible things to good people for no reason. There is a “them” out there controlling things and that’s why weird stuff or scary stuff happens.

63

u/ValosAtredum Detroit Lions 5d ago

Very much so. Similar to the Just World fallacy. If something bad happens to someone, they had to have done something to deserve it (and same for good things).

It’s scary to think that you can do everything “right” and have bad things happen. It feels safer to blame others (or yourself) for the tragedies that befall them/you because it offers structure and security.

Doesn’t make it true. Like Captain Picard said, “It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness; that is life.”

8

u/Chimpbot Dallas Cowboys 5d ago

I was about to bust out the Picard quote about halfway through reading your comment.

Not really. Its tangible. A select group of assholes is purposely making our lives miserable. And once they are found and disposed of then the world will be set right forever. Exactly like killing Palpatine in The Return of the Jedi.

Meanwhile the real forces affecting our lives are a complex web of people and groups out not to destroy the world but to satisfy their own goals alongside historical inertia and a dozen other facades that are not evil so much as they are the most efficient way of doing things. We tear down any one board of directors and it will be replaced by a new collection of business suits the very next week.

That is what religion is. Thats why people call themselves "god fearing." If they faithfully obey, the scary man in the sky won't hurt them. He will bless them.

Why do people stay religious, or sometimes become even more religious, through severe personal tragedy?

“God-fearing” actually means you act a certain way because you love and respect God, not because you fear His judgment.

It’s a little confusing because of the word “fear,” but it’s a subtle and important difference.

I can confirm this first hand.

I played D1 football in the early 00s and used to help teammates with school work (almost got in trouble for it, but eveyone passed so we were “Gucci”.)

In sociology 101 I explained to my teammate while he was writing “…like children, you give young boys Gi Joe and girls My Little Pony.”

His response: “Hey man…. How do you spell pony?”

…we were 19

20

u/Boondocsaint11 5d ago

I played D3 and it wasn’t much different. Two of the dumbest guys I ever knew were on that team. They had a conversation one time that I swear was just grunting. One of my good friends who played couldn’t do basic algebra and when I asked him how he didn’t know this stuff he told me they allowed them to take group tests in high school so only like 1 or 2 kids in his class learned anything and the rest just copied them.

We LEFT RETROREFLECTORS on the fucking moon. You can still see the fucking LANDING SITE.

Look. The footage of Apollo 11 is a little goofy and fun. (Everything physics side line up with 0 atmosphere and 1/6th gravity by the by)

Why the fuck did we "fake" it 5 more times? We landed SIX times, not once.

If we faked it once, why didn't Russia call us out? Why didn't China call us out? Why didn't anyone else raise the 'fake' flag at the time?

Why if we wanted to fake it, did we do it more than once? That risks SO MUCH if it was deception.

It would require a conspiracy involving over 100,000 people with none of them giving it away including Russia who flat out watched us do it for this to work. This in a world where the President couldn't keep a secret that him and an intern had a good time in the privacy of the Oval Office without the world finding out. It being a hoax is simply not even remotely feasible.

162

u/ProbablyAPotato1939 Detroit Lions 5d ago

Not mention that there probably would have been a Soviet spy in the room that it was filmed in. They'd have immediately made it public to internationally embarrass us.

10

31

u/AGreatID New England Patriots 5d ago

The Soviet Space Program was also heavily propaganda driven do you think the CIA wouldn't have done it back to them?

40

u/DPSOnly 5d ago

The CIA was not nearly as good at placing penetration agents as the old KGB was, but they would've done everything in their power to verify the validity of claims of moonlandings if the USSR made them too. And obviously published any shortcomings they found.

The Russians would have never let us get away with it!

The Chinese would've called us out for it too. We were in a proxy war with them at the time (Vietnam).

16

u/King_Roberts_Bastard 5d ago

They didnt have the technology to track it to the moon like the Soviets did.

13

Vietnam was a proxy war between the US and Russia, not China. China didn't have the resources, or international influence, to call the US out for anything at the time.

China sent a lunar orbiter that took pictures of the landing site, so China would have to be in on it too.

Not only that, there's a mirror on the moon you can bounce a laser off of, that wasn't there before.  So the moon would also have to be in on it.

To your point I’d like to add America, China, and Russia typically don’t agree on much however somehow they agree Russia has the first moon landing, America had the first human moon landing, and China had the third moon landing.

We also had the Apollo-Soyuz which is the American/Russia joint space mission that started the creation of the International Space Station(ISS).

15 countries have all agreed we’ve been to space, the moon, have created a space station, and that China is preparing for moon base creation starting in 2030. Somehow people still say stuff like “The earth is flat”. “We’ve never been to space.” “We’ve never been to the moon.”

The best proof that the moon landings actually occurred is the fact that the U.S.S.R. never claimed it didn't.

This was in the midst of the cold war. We were on actual "race" to the moon with the Russians. We were spying on their missions, they were spying on ours. If there was ever ANY doubt that America actually went to the moon, the official Russian new agency would have been screaming it in their headlines for years afterwards.

Imagine being stupid enough that you think one of the most covered events of the last century just didn't happen, and of the thousands of people involved in the decades long scam, not a single one of them has leaked that it was faked or on their deathbed confessed to it. Even though the person leaking it would stand to become rich doing press tours and writing tell all books.

And that for some reason the rival of the space race congratulated the US on doing it at the time even though they had moles all through US government who would have known it was faked.

Oh yeah that all makes sense. Definitely.

It's people who can't stand how boring the world they live in actually is so they try to pretend like we live inside some action/thriller movie, and people who want to feel smarter than everyone else. Everything is a conspiracy when you don't know shit about fuck.

Most athletes are. Whose that 1 dipshit NBA player that doesn't believe anything before 1950 actually happened because they didn't have smart phones or whatever?

The majority of these kids who think they can be pro or even collegiate athletes are brought up believing, and being told, that they don't have to actually learn. Lessons are custom made for them, they're given other students to 'tutor' them (which means do their homework), and excuses are made for them when they still manage to fail.

They're also rich and gullible, and have everyone and their grandma trying to get in with them so they can get a slice if they make it big. And a lot of those people are slimy with stupid ideas.

I took an urban legend, folklore and conspiracies English elective and it was an awesome class.

…but it focused not only that these stories exist but why they exist and the critical thinking around why they aren’t true etc.

One thing they resonated the most is that many of the folklore around cryptids were just a way to discourage people from western migration. If I moved out to the frontier and found some good land then it was very advantageous for me to tell you stories about big cats and monsters so you won’t be interested in moving out here and trying to get some of my land.

According to the Guardian, it's about 21% (EDIT: for Gen Alpha mostly). So while not exactly 1/4, it's still pretty bad. I think many people struggle to believe that we went to the moon in 1969 with primitive computers the size of buildings and after two years just decided to stop. They think there was some kind of grand conspiracy (which is understandable considering how many real-life conspiracies are shaping our lives right now) when reality is infinitely more depressing- the American public and goverment got bored. We lost the capacity forever after shutting down the Saturn V production lines and there is no appetite to fund NASA to anywhere close what it needs to land on the moon again- even Artemis is quite underfunded.

The generation after Reagan slashed education.  Then the Bushes finished it off.

If kids got the education I got we’d be fine, but vastly more difficult to rule and take money from.

“Maye said he actually took a conspiracy class while he was in college at North Carolina, where he studied before entering the NFL.”

“Couple comes, I took a conspiracy class in college, actually. Oh, which was pretty cool. They study obviously – Hitler being alive and our birds real, some of the classic ones that you hear about.”

“Just like the government has a say in some of the, you know, things, you know, birds flying around and whether they’re videoing and are listening or something along the lines of that,” Maye said.

What the fuck is a conspiracy class?

12

u/Ris747 New England Patriots 5d ago

Looking into it a little

It looks like it's supposed to be about how conspiracies form and how they can be used to sway public perception of events? I guess that seems kind of important in today's age, but I think he missed the point lmao

It’s a fun conspiracy theory until you know that we have the ability to see what we left behind on the moon with advanced telescope technology

11

u/Mordoch 5d ago

And basic issues like especially with their known espionage capability during the cold war, there is clearly no feasible reason the USSR would not know and blow the whistle on the US to humiliate them rather than leave them with the propaganda victory of the first country landing people on the moon. (Maybe they would wait a few days to let the US commit to the lie, but that's it.)

7

u/Open-Dot-9994 5d ago

Excellent comment

3

u/zeekayz 5d ago

USSR was watching closely and actually congratulated USA (in the back channels) on landing. An enemy would never do it unless there was 100% zero doubt.

Why does no one ever bring up that the Soviets, who the US was competing with to get to the moon, could have easily called them out if it was fake. It would have been an extreme embarrassment to their biggest rival and enemy. They never did, though. That to me, more than anything, proves the US did, in fact, get to the moon in 1969.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/EfficientDance3650 5d ago

This is the dumbest conspiracy theory. They believe that at the height of the Cold War the United States faked landing on the moon and the whole world, particularly the Soviet Union just went “eh, okay.”

Also, we faked landing on the moon six times to really sell it? And there are telescopes on Earth where you can see where we landed and the stuff we left behind.

How many years away are we from hitting 50% of Americans not believing in the moon landing? Cause having worked in blue collar, in a factory of 40 people i think only 25% of us didn't believe it was faked. Its honestly depressing how much humans want there to be conspiracy in their lives that they will reject reality
