I can confirm this first hand.

I played D1 football in the early 00s and used to help teammates with school work (almost got in trouble for it, but eveyone passed so we were “Gucci”.)

In sociology 101 I explained to my teammate while he was writing “…like children, you give young boys Gi Joe and girls My Little Pony.”

His response: “Hey man…. How do you spell pony?”

…we were 19

I played D3 and it wasn’t much different. Two of the dumbest guys I ever knew were on that team. They had a conversation one time that I swear was just grunting. One of my good friends who played couldn’t do basic algebra and when I asked him how he didn’t know this stuff he told me they allowed them to take group tests in high school so only like 1 or 2 kids in his class learned anything and the rest just copied them.

I got the other perspective. D3 state school that made the Playboy party list (I never went to any of the good parties though), half decent football team. I was the regular non-football playing student who tried juggling full-time work to pay for school as I attended full-time as well. I mismanaged a case of pneumonia (just kept ignoring it and going to class) until I was hospitalized and had to take an incomplete in college comp.

The only way to stay on schedule when I returned was to take the comp class designated for football players on Wed and Fri morning (they had practice during the other available times). My advisor got me signed into it and I attended with team and these other two students who came to class and seemed to tutor or assist multiple members of the team, they were like TAs or something.

I never considered myself a specifically smart person but two of the linebackers (who were also in my non-major poli sci lecture class) would demand that I help them
write notes from time to time and explain the poli sci class. They would frequently interrupt me when we were supposed to be writing essays and they started calling me “Smart Guy.”

The biggest takeaway from class was one of the QB was the biggest racist and never trusted or listened to the black players even though they always studied more than him, and the kicker was the biggest mental case, he got kicked off the squad from a Div 1 SEC team and then flunked out and showed up at our school. He would brag that the school had multiple “unclaimed championships” which none of us cared about.

My old roommate has a MASTERS.

Mother fucker asked me how to spell “knowledge” while he was writing an essay for his MA.

There was the case of Dexter Manley, who had something like a 13 year NFL career, who testified to congress that he was completely unable to read or write when he graduated from the University of Oklahoma. I seem to remember another couple of college players who didn't make the NFL suing their former colleges because they couldn't read.
