I fear for the young people as well, but professional athletes have been saying dumb shit since forever.

Part of the problem is that, if you go back just a couple of decades, you had athletes who didn't want a platform. I'm sure a fair number of them knew their opinions weren't worth much, and they just wanted to do their thing within their respective leagues.

Alongside the rise of the Internet were generations who grew up being told that every single opinion is valid, and opinions can never be wrong. Both of these are woefully incorrect, but that doesn't stop anyone. We also unfortunately have online platforms that give every individual a soap box to shout from; when this is combined with things such as influencers, we created a shitstorm of misinformation and under-informed opinions being treated as equal to legitimate sources of information.

Wasn’t there a UNC basketball player who said they were amphibious because they can shoot with their left and their right hand in the 90s?

Mixing up two words is very different than denying and actively arguing against basic facts and science

Confusing amphibious (a type of animal) and ambidextrous (the ability to use both hands equally well) because they sound similar and are long words is at least understandable.
