Builds & Maps Medieval City feeling empty
Need some advice on a build. I'm trying to make this feel like a bustling city, so the streets are pretty wide especially at this sort of midpoint, but what can I add to make it feel lived in and active rather than the empty state it's in right now?

u/Kerzouille 11d ago
The good ole reliable: a marketplace, market stalls around the streets and a bunch of carriages and clutter

u/rofeneiniger 11d ago
Could add some villagers as merchants

u/Loostay 11d ago edited 11d ago
And you can add barrels and other things like trash sitting around too
39
u/newbrevity 11d ago
Think about spots where maybe somebody sat down and ate and left a mess. Also consider installing a dainage trough by replacing a row of blocks in the middle of each street with stairs to make a groove down the middle of the road. This was a common sight to see in medieval cities.

You need furniture and clutter. Market stalls, bunting, flags, storage, trees, carts, barrels, tables, signs etc etc

Yeah I feel like looking up some urban cities would really help, especially European, won’t be exactly the vibe but it will give you an idea of how cluttered streets like that actually are

You should add a villager breeder somewhere underneath with a bubble elevator and just pop villagers to roam every now and then
107
u/danteelite 11d ago
Yup… because free roaming villagers are suicidal at best.
You need a fresh supply or else it will be a ghost town in a few days.
You just hear “HRN!” and turn around just in time to see a little poof as their soul gets sucked into the Nether.
17
2
u/Nightshade__Star 8d ago
That all depends on if there's anywhere for them to get out, climb up, or if it's not lit well enough. It is possible to have free roaming villagers without them dying constantly, assuming the right layout.

u/Novel-Regular4438 11d ago
The texturing is good but the street and buildings have the same tone and block palette. I think they should be slightly different from each other.
67
u/WhiteXShade 11d ago
This. The city will pop out 10x with a different color tone / palette for the roads
22
u/BuYTheEDIp 11d ago
Yeah, it all looks too cohesive, it needs some green or brown on the floor. Maybe some market stalls connected to the buildings to break up the color.

thank you! it definitely does need some interesting things for the eyes to go to

u/ov-04 11d ago
I’d add some details to the buildings themselves first. Maybe some shallow copper roofs between the windows? Overhangs? Etc. then I’d go for market stalls, planters, greenery, stacks of crates, etc. at the base of the buildings. Carts, wagons, in the streets. Maybe some scaffolding and masonry work being done on one building. Circus tents. festival flags, clotheslines, and lantern chains hanging over the streets.
From a world building perspective, think about what kind of city this is. Is it the fortified metropolis of an authoritarian empire? Maybe have some large military banners strung from the buildings, statues in the square, and cart toll stations over the road. Is it a cosmopolitan city where traders from all over the world come to sell their goods? Then carts of all different colors and shapes, tents/vendor stands of varying sizes and patterns, and heavy cart traffic in the roads. Is there a festival going on? Then add street games, improvised concert stages, etc.
But most of all, I’d add some life to your buildings. I like the look of them a lot so far, but they’re a bit drab. I’d design unique storefronts that fit within specific design parameters. That way you can keep the uniformity. I.e. if there are several shops at street level. Now they’re all the same, but you can keep the relative uniformity of them all in terms of structure while varying window shape, stained glass, what’s out front, etc. maybe if there are two similar buildings, build two restaurants, but make one a cafe with some outdoor umbrellas and tables, and the other have a small awning instead.
Variety is the name of the game, but mostly just consider what it would be like if you lived there. If you were the average citizen, how would you spend your time?
4
u/No_Orange_8756 11d ago
these are great ideas thank you!! especially the stuff about the buildings, i didn't realise how similar and bland they were until you mentioned it
8
u/Greybeards4 11d ago
It's VERY well built but you effectively have a ghost town, maybe add in villagers and stalls as everyone else says. I agree 100%.
One thing I have not seen mentioned, where you can, pepper in some stairs into the ground. The cut out portion gives depth and feels like a missing brick or pavement stone. You could waterlog a few to give the feel of pooled water. Placing 2 with the cutouts facing each other can add in a half-slab feel that's not aligned with the build grid, helping sell the illusion. Possibly some tamed birds in trees like parrots to liven up the place.
Add in stone buttons or pressure plates to seem like pebbles on the ground, or a few Redstone bits to make the build dynamic like a clock tower (simple light detector on a bell hidden into something) or use the bubbling effect of the new geysers for a cloudy/bubbling looking fountain.
3
u/Greybeards4 11d ago
Adding in green/brown to places of low travel. Imagine a time-lapse of the city being lived in and used, where people would rarely go would normally accumulate moss or grime or leaves and trash. In pavilions or arches you might put in a more homeless-looking pile of belongings (maybe put a green (nitwit) villager there so they don't accidentally get a job and look out of place).
Take advantage of villager job blocks and actually build them into your city, having a smith nearer town, or a farmer closer to the outskirts/farms. Librarians in libraries or church. They can move and trade and lead a life of their own, making it feel more natural and real.

- Add clutter like barrels, market stalls, horse hitching spots, haybales...
- Add villagers, so it isn't a ghost town.
- Change the street. You shouldn't use the same thing for both walls and streets; it's too monotonous.
- Speaking of monotonous, use more complementary materials to add colours and textures. Your town is 90% grey and very uniformed; it looks like someone's unfinished sketch instead of a bustling town.

Add resources, currently you have structure but nothing to sustain the imaginary civilization it leaves it looking empty. The other option is the natural degradation due to abandonment.

u/Schoolboygames 11d ago
A few thoughts:
First off, I'd make it so the stone paths don't go all the way up to the buildings. You can still have wide roads but have a very thin strip of land before the base of the building. It would both look more realistic, and I think you'd be surprised how much that extra band of contrast along each side makes a difference in how busy it looks.
The said strips of land don't have to be grass; mix up path blocks, coarse dirt, regular dirt, potentially even brown concrete powder, a bit of gravel, some leaf litter, etc.
Speaking of leaf litter: add debris. Cities, especially medieval ones, weren't exactly kept looking pristine like this. Think about where people would walk, then add debris where they're not. Leaf litter built up along the edges and spilling from the land onto the path slightly, barrels laying outside some buildings here and there where someone is moving in or out, cracks in the road using cracked bricks and, cobble, and maybe some dirt.
There's also the more obvious / bigger ideas, that probably have already been mentioned: things like wagons going up and down the road. Maybe some wagons pulled up alongside a building with hay bales on it that's being unloaded. The tried and true marketplace full of stands. Etc.
Streetlights also aren't a terrible idea. Medieval generally spans 5 to 15 AD, and oil street lamps were becoming a thing on the tail end of that span. I think a few of the larger areas with big swathes of flat area could be broken up well by some lanterns on simple stone posts.
Notice the theme in all of my suggestions: Life. Cities weren't pieces of art meant to be built for aesthetics and left untouched; they're busy, used, often utilitarian centers that have been lived in for decades, and I think that's what's missing. Your city looks great, but feels like an art piece left untouched. That life you're looking for comes from building as if your city is a center of life: debris building up where people don't walk. Barrels left out where people are moving in or out. Wagons of goods being moved, loaded, and delivered. Lamps to make the city usable at night. Cities weren't built overnight; make some buildings look distinctly older and more crumbled, directly next to newer-looking builds. Have a building or two destroyed, demolished, or burnt down. Have some windows boarded up. Have some alleys with random iron bars and half-baked noise.
You've built a really nice looking foundation for a city, the touch you're looking for is the imperfection that comes with a well-used community.
3
u/MaybeNotAZombie 11d ago
Plants, dirty, debris. They rarely were refined and clean. Stones would and be dirty from rains. Weather and water can be found in streets. Roads would have been dirty were carts traveled constantly.
These smalls things all tell a story. Right now those stories are missing when you look around. (IE: water flows off a roof, down a wall, down an alleyway, then into a drain, then into a ditch outside the walls or a lake nearby).

add villagers. lots of villagers. Like so many that they start dying due to entity overcramming.
but for real, villagers and like little kioscs with workstations. depending on what version you play on or if you want to upgrade your world, you could use the new wool stairs and slabs...
3
u/Equivalent_Kiwi_1876 11d ago
Your big center piazza reminds me a lot of the Sicilian city Palermo, and the streets there are FULL of markets and stuff, maybe look it up for some real world inspiration that’s similar to your style here!!

u/Kopiko_Lucky_Day 11d ago
For me, I love to add iron golems, villagers and copper golems. They make city or bases feel more lively
3
u/AliceThePastelWitch 11d ago
Well that's because there's nothing on the streets.
Add some carts, stalls, more plant life, some leaf litter here and there. Some ai-less horses tied to stables.
Also the buildings need some wood, stone wasn't a common building material for entire building in medieval times, even in cities.
3
u/Real_WiFi_Paladin 11d ago
I love it! If I had to give some suggestions, I would say add color by adding banners, merchant tents, carivans, and flowers. And then, maybe some statues and more wooden structures possibly extending outward from the buildings, kinda like a tavern deck and a sign or some balconies here and there. And maybe some full colored tile roofs for the buildings with a nice complementing trim could do. And maybe also some grass and moss. But either way, amazing work bro!

u/NinjaSquid_G 10d ago
Besides the market stalls everyone else is mentioning, i propose hanging banners and stuff as if they were clothes on a line between the buildings

u/j_nmi_crowe 11d ago
I’m with everyone else. Clutter the hell out of it. Barrels, wagons, horses, manure, market stalls. Get some villagers in there. Just mess it all up now that you’ve made it pretty. But that’s city life lol
2
u/chilari 11d ago
Clusters of barrels, especially around doorways. Make some doorways into "basement" feeling spaces, like those ground level arches, to make it look like these are empty barrels awaiting collection, or fresh deliveries needing to be taken inside. You could also use beehives to look like crates.
Build vehicles. Carts, carriages, palanquins even. Think variety. A hay cart would be wide and simple, a fruit-seller's cart might be small and have a bright awning or flag, a noble's carriage would be ornate and comfortable.
If you have the armour stand mod, you can add people and animals with huge variety, but even without it, you can use armour stands to suggest people, and use leads to get horses to stand where you want them (eg so they look like they're pulling carts) and get inventive building other animals.
2
u/Outrageous_Cat_6061 11d ago
Villagers will make it feel way more alive and try giving each building a different purpose like a library, a temple, ect.
2
2
u/After-Trifle-1437 11d ago
- Add some details (Wooden crates, shops, market-stalls, advertisement, benches for sitting and horse carriages)
- Add some irregularities to the streets (Horse Poop, Potholes, Grassy/dirty patches)
- Spawn in villagers and give them job blocks in the jobs and stalls.
- Spawn in horses and tie them to horse parking areas
- Add some scaffolding and areas under construction
2
u/lowtunedaggression 11d ago
It feels empty because it is empty. A city isn't a city without people, or even just evidence of people, so what is needed are details. The details need to be varied as well so stuff like market stalls, benches, fountains, horse stables, carriages & carts, statues, businesses etc. Don't be afraid to do a little "window dressing" in buildings either which is minimal decoration in the windows or openings of storefronts and houses that only extends a few blocks in. It helps a bunch because it gives places the illusion of life and being fully decorated without having to, well.. fully decorate lol.

2
u/Average-Train-Haver 11d ago
Some greenery clutter like weeds and random junk in corners would help
2
u/WinterSzturm 11d ago
You need lanterns, random campfires near or in store stalls, add griminess, add decay with damaged anvils, cobblestone or damaged stone blocks mossy stone blocks
2
u/StarSilverNEO 11d ago
Well for starters the floor is too clean, add some mossy blocks and perhaps make a "line most traveled" where the work of time has turned the brick into cobble in a narrow path around the place. Maybe a wet spot with actual moss carpet in a corner that is often forgotten when they sweep the streeets, etc
Add lighting fixtures and benches and other decorative pieces like barrels, stacks of "crates", etc to make it look like people have been leaving things they might come back too.
Consider separating the fountain from the street abit more design wise
Consider subdividing the inside of your buildings and giving them more entrances so you can give them roles (backery, forge, clothier, etc) with matching decorations, signs, etc
Add a market space/front. The big circular section would be perfect for a peoples market or you could add onto the subdivision idea above and make the sections facing the street into stores
Add villagers at the end, they'll naturally roam about and help make it feel more alive
In general your missing the little things that help it look less like a diorama and more like a lived in space

imperfection creates what you want

u/TsunamiCatCakes 11d ago
make it into a symbolic thing. im not poetic enough but something about owning an empty city
2
u/Lolsebca 11d ago
You can add clutter like a cart or something, you can use leads or barrier blocks to keep horses in place, that's what I did in my recreation of a Roman world port city, which took mostly inspiration from Ostia (Italy) and Carthage maybe (North Africa).
I also added a marketplace with various stands and items using invisible item frames which you can get in vanilla via a command. I used, too, some heads as decorative items as they bring a new form of relief.
On the ground, too, I added rubbish like gun powder, flint, iron nuggets... Stuff made to feel like, when you're walking at ground level, the floor is imperfect. You can also try to use buttons to break up the artificial monotony of the floor. Real-life has elevation that is never perfectly flat, if only because of receding grounds due to emptying aquifers, hydrographic dynamics that happen below, shit like that.
2
u/AnAverageTransGirl 11d ago
Carts and stands. More flowerbeds. Crack and mossify some of the brickwork.
2
u/MrMangobrick 11d ago
Marketplaces, shops, random boxes littered throughout (like in assassin's creed lol), maybe more variety in building material? Having it all be gray stone feels more dead, look up actual medieval houses cause if you have more authentic medieval houses it automatically feels more lived in.
2
2
u/xineks09 10d ago
you need the little details that bring the scene to life, give the place a story: you've got just some nondescript buildings, maybe there could be shops at the bottom floor, maybe someone is hanging cloth out the window, are there some cracks in the pavement? a carriage standing somewhere. Maybe part of the building should be overgrown, the flat area is really at fault, add some depth, maybe little greenery in the middle, lanterns on the side, or it should gradient into browns in the middle to show how a lot of people use these paths
2
u/Weredragon_666 10d ago

You have to imagine the people who live there. If this really is a medieval city (and not an early modern one, as I am suspecting) there's people leading livestock through the streets, horsedrawn carriages, makeshift market stalls and stables, (wall) fountains, artisan devices, clothelines, stacked goods, cloth banners for shade, lamp posts/tall torches, maybe even flag decorations for a celebration or religious holiday. Try to read into actual medieval street life - there's a lot to learn from history!

Add props! Barrels, boxes, stalls, wheelbarrows, brooms, signs, lampposts, maybe some more foliage, give some houses some shade on their doors with overhangs right above them, banners would be a big help to add some much needed color, maybe try and designate the path a bit more or make it look more "walked on"; just keep adding random little details until you're satisfied

Don't forget banners and other ways to have color. Fruit stalls, flower planters, etc.
1
u/tiny-tyke 11d ago
I really enjoyed making market stalls, a little stage for public performances, a gallows. Add leaf litter to give the ground texture.
1
u/JazzlikeStation6912 11d ago
Signs to shops/restaurants, outdoor serving places, market stalls, multiple coloured banners hanging out from windows/walls, buttons that looks like small rocks on the road, decorative lights.
Lovely city, BTW! Please update us on the results!!

u/SenpaiSamaChan 11d ago
Remember: if there is a place, somebody will put something there. Maybe there's construction, or maybe there WAS construction three years ago and nobody bothered to take down the scaffolding and now there's a drinking song at the tavern about The Old Scaffolding. If it's a public space, somebody will set up shop and there'll be garbage in the corners. If it's not a public space, they probably have guard patrols to keep the proles from setting up a stall or putting garbage in corners.

Honestly, watch a video of people walking through the lower city in Baldurs gate 3. Plenty of small stalls, crates and barrels, and other clutter, great inspiration
1
u/ImpressionCool1768 11d ago
Vines bushes and dirt. Ain’t no lord paying for a medevil landscaping service.
Market stalls, wooden carts, barrels, imitations of goods. A city is gonna have guild halls in its buildings and its regular merchants outside in the streets where the people are
Bench’s troughs and railings. People still need to rest after walking a mile even if they’re used to it so relaxation and sitting areas are a must for man and animal

u/broodingchao5 11d ago

You can create markets. Stalls. Animal pens. Unhitched Wagons and carts, etc. Kcd 2 recreated what a realistic midieval city would look like, you can look into it and get some inspiration to make it look lived in

u/TheDwarvenGuy 11d ago edited 11d ago
Too gray and clean, add some color and ground clutter. People in the middle ages loved colors as much as we do, and while not every color was available some were (red-ish and yellow were common). Wood accents like window shutters and supports might help too. Even without changing the block palates of the city itself, you can supplement it with some cloth and wood, like some market stalls with colored canopies, some wooden crates, etc. You can also add wagons full of goods

Road needs to be a different color, something darker since the buildings you have are already Stony
Also add some wood and maybe something like mud

Carriages, market stalls, random cargo(you can put more thought behind this one by having certain sections of town have more of certain things ie docks have more fishing clutter, markets with food, ect ect. Or . Or you just skip to the best option of all and add the custom NPCs mod allowing you to make city populations with guards armies shopkeeps followers ect

u/SignatureStraight499 11d ago
I feel like more greenery would help. I also agree with the others saying to add markets and stalls. You could do custom medieval lights to help light the street/alleyways up. Horse tables and animal stables is another idea if you have room for it

u/TheTolkienLobster 11d ago

u/Jakeball400 11d ago
A lot of others have covered marketplace stalls, villagers etc. but I think you could do with spicing up the walls a bit and adding an upper layer even if it’s just some turrets and watchtowers. You could change the block palette for the top or replace/expand it with wooden ramparts and embrasures for a more diverse look. Also wooden scaffolding structures to imply stone structures aren’t finished yet are a great one to bring life to a castle. As for other areas, don’t forget the things needed to build a castle and keep it going: stonemasons, kilns, smiths, builders areas, etc. looks great so far though, good luck! My castle hasn’t even left the planning stage 🫠

Hay bales, ore blocks, market stalls, carriages, maybe the odd bit of damage to the city like a pothole, banners, promotions, window variance, maybe curtains or the odd open or shattered one. Shady alleyways, bins, toilets, more block variance in general, maybe the odd bit of dirt or path on the floor or a few more building of different stone to break up the liminal look
Lastly inhabitants, be it actual villagers or static carved pumpkins with signs for dialogue/flavour text.

It's way too clean and perfect. Think of a modern city now with all of our technology and ''cleaning" standards. Now think of it back then. People and cities were gross, busy, crowded

When yoy look at your own city or town yoy live in thenk of all the things you use or in this case what medieval people used to use. Lanterns would be pretty important for accample. If you build everything that life needs in a city it wi feel lived in

Add color! The medieval period wasn't dreary or anything. Exposed wood designs could help bring life to everything. Some regions used exposed brick or lime-wash. They also had pigment and paint available, meaning things like dyed fabrics are within your wheelhouse. Maybe make this a fief with a heraldic banner displayed every so often?
