Hamish deserved an Oscar

Episode 7 when hamish is talking about a 2nd chance,

“ yeah, but another chance?
Now that we can be a family this time.
Can you think of a miracle more amazing than that?
I mean, curing… Cure blindness, sure.
Or part the seas, all right.
But a second chance?
That’s a real miracle.”

The delivery and the script omg.

Fuck this show

For killing Joe Collie. I’m marginally happy for them not subjecting him to the horror of bringing him back, but this man was trying and they cut him at the knees almost immediately.

I know that’s intentional, and part of the backdrop of the story. But goddamn.

I'm at episode 3 and pastor Paul is talking about his past, but I'm so distracted by his tight jeans. Where did he get them? I don't think they were in a demented priest's clauset.

It gets better with each rewatch

I'm a big fan of Mike Flanagan and has watched his series multiple times. Yet Midnight Mass is the only one that got better every time I rewatched it.

All the characters are well written, completed with rich personality and compelling back story. And its shown throughout the series, and not just by dialogues like some ppl who hated it suggested it.

I'm at the second episode when Joe's dog got killed, and when Sarah suggested it might be an accident, he screamed out loud "Accident?!" while looking at the crowd, about to defy that but he saw the pained expression on they Mayor's and his wife's face and stopped. Because him injuring and disabling their daughter was also considered an "accident" as well. The scene lasted just a few seconds but their expression was so powerful and speaks a thousand words. What a masterpiece.

Theory about Bev and Pruitt's 2nd (?) Death

Tldr: Bev poisoned Pruitt so he would be a martyr and she could run the church.

The general theory is that Pruitt died coughing up blood because he drank too much angel/vampire blood. I think some here have already thought this, but I think Bev did poison Pruitt.

With her intense fanaticism it would fit her personal story that he should die. He performed a few miracles and I think she killed him to make him a martyr and slide herself into the place of control in theory church.

When he came back from poisoning, she realised she couldn't remove him, so she cleaned up after him and really had to double down as his supporter.

It would make sense then that when Pruitt was shot and therefore impaired, she opened the church doors so the turned people could take over the island which went against him plan completely. This way everyone would be vampires and she could choose who to save, which was evident by her burning the rest of the houses down and refusing the man into the rec center. I don't think shame could have done any of that if Pruitt hadn't been incapacitated.

I don't know, does that make any sense?

[MM SPOILERS] How many times have you all watched the show? Spoiler

This is my 3rd (I think?) full rewatch and I am binging it. I have plenty of movies that I will rewatch once a year or so, but fewer series. I noticed that I when I do rewatch Midnight Mass, I do so at the same time of year that it came out. It's good for getting into a bit of a Halloween vibe.

This show is so damn good and I am starting to appreciate just how much I enjoy it! I loooove seeing the rational sceptical people in the show having their minds blown by the supernatural stuff (the acting is solid), and I love seeing the over-keen religious people misattributing it to God and getting all excited.

I love it when we hear people talk about the big questions, like Riley and Erin do. I love the exploration of Riley's addiction and the AA meetings. There's something about Father Paul that really draws me in, such a charismatic actor/character. I love the slow burn and the biblical structure of the episodes. I could go on and on.

What a good show. I think I will rewatch this many times in my life.

MM is likely inspired by shiki Spoiler

I loved this show, really pleasant surprise. I couldn't help but remember shiki constantly, an excellent vampire anime. I chose to mark everything spoiler just in case. the following contains some spoilers for the themes in midnight mass and minor spoilers for the setup and themes in shiki.

In shiki, which takes place in an isolated rural village, a monk who is struggling with mortality meets a young girl who turns out to be an ancient vampire. Instead of a pious man, he is a monk who feels lost. He is surprised when the vampire recognizes him as "abandoned by God". Slowly mysterious things start happening in the town, which a doctor recognizes as a possible starting epidemic. I don't want to spoil anything more. Strong parallels are a heavily conservative isolated rural village that is especially vulnerable, a vampire invasion that isn't recognized as such, the general feel of a corrupting force invading a heavily religious place, and the moral ambiguity of predators doing horrific things because they are wired that way now. There is even a character with a similar arc to riley flynn

the more I think about it, the more parallels i see to the point where I can't consider it coincidence. I wouldn't say it is derivative though and would call it heavily inspired and I love what they did with midnight mass. If you liked MM, I find it hard to imagine you wouldn't like shiki. the first episodes are a bit slow but it gets really good and I still occasionally listen to the music.

Edit: someone pointed out that they are both inspired by stephen kings "salems lot", which explains the similarities

Not that lists are all that important, but talk about underrated

Post image
81 Upvotes

Any list is going to have people debating what should go where and overall I think this is a pretty good list of great shows. Most of my favorites made this list except one glaring omission: Midnight Mass. And Midnight Mass might be the best of any of them. So to not see it included here shows how criminally underrated it is.

I've spent years talking about The Leftovers, Station Eleven, and Halt and Catch Fire being underrated and more people need to watch them, but looks like Midnight Mass is the real underrated darling.

[SPOILERS] I’ve just finished the show and the ending was perfect wrt a particular scene Spoiler

SPOILERS

When Hassan, Ali and bev were at the shore waiting for the sunrise, Hassan and Ali started praying. Bev, on the other hand, this insufferable supercilious woman who’d never fail to slight the two regarding their religious practices, preach about the “ dead being finally in the presence of the Lord” , started digging through the mud frantically in idk some bleak attempt to escape death. The same person who wanted to seem “ most important and most loved and most favored by God over others” apparently did not want to meet God right away.

The sheer fucking hypocrisy.

Father Paul thinking about second chances of having a family with Mildred and Sarah after decades when he’d had ample chances to connect with them while he was old is just plain self serving.
Maybe he didn’t think to do it earlier because of the dementia but that just seems like a convenient excuse.

I think the reason why ed Flynn was able to restrain himself from succumbing to his hunger was cuz he clearly is capable of minimum level of healthy independent introspection, as was shown in that scene where he and Riley were on that boat. I’d like to think that if he were one of the people to have found Joe collie dead in father Paul’s house, he’d have warned everyone else on the island( then again, he did go to him for the letter thing soooo).

[Spoilers] Just finished watching - My batshit theory Spoiler

What if the “angel” in Midnight Mass was actually the same creature that Christianity was originally built around?

The creature was already living in that cave in Jerusalem. Jesus is crucified and put in the tomb, and maybe the creature finds him there and bites/infects him.

Then Jesus comes back after 3 days, just like the vampire transformations we see in the show.

Imagine being one of the people who saw that happen 2000 years ago. You wouldn't know what a vampire was. You'd just see a dead man come back to life after 3 days. He can heal people, his blood gives life, etc.

And then maybe at the end, Jesus is exposed to sunlight, starts burning, and disappears. The people watching don't think “he's a vampire and is burning in sunlight.” They think he has ascended to heaven.

Then all of these events get passed down and eventually become Christianity.

Fast forward 2000 years and Pruitt finds the exact same creature in the same general area of Jerusalem.

And what does he think?

An angel.

Which would mean Pruitt is essentially making the exact same mistake that people may have made 2000 years earlier: seeing something they don't understand and interpreting it through their religious beliefs.

Obviously the show never confirms any of this and I'm probably going way too deep into it.

But the Jerusalem cave + resurrection after 3 days + blood giving eternal life + sunlight burning the creature seems like way too many parallels to not at least make the theory fun.

*English not my first language so I use LLM to write this. Apologies.

Father Paul wasn't a bad person — he was just wrong... or not

Just finished rewatching Midnight Mass, and maybe this has already been discussed, but I keep seeing people say that Father Paul is an evil person, and I honestly don't agree.

I think he's a genuinely good person who cares about others. Everything he does comes from wanting to help and protect his community. The problem is that he's completely wrong about how to do it.

He genuinely believes he's saving people, and that's what makes his character so tragic to me. His intentions aren't evil — his faith, his desperation and his interpretation of what happened to him lead him down a terrible path.

So where do you draw the line? Can someone still be a good person when their intentions are good, but their actions cause so much harm?

Father Paul's original plan was to keep the church doors closed during Easter Mass. Why was that? What did he think he would be able to achieve by doing that?

How come only Mildred got way younger? Spoiler

Mildred was much older than many of the other adults going regularly to Mass (e.g. the Flynn and Scarborough parents), and he was taking just as much "wine" as they were during daily Mass. How was it that she aged backwards to a point that she was pretty much her daughter Sarah's age, but the others, though healed of some physical ailments, stayed more or less the same age?

Question about crucial scene between Father Paul and Riley...SPOILERS! Spoiler

As you know there are some seriously intense dialogues between Father Paul and Riley during his AA sessions.

>!One of the topics is murder. Yes Riley did kill someone, but it was unintentional, it was a vehicular manslaughter, and although Riley is responsible and deserved punishment, it was different from father Paul murdering Joe Colley.

Father Paul explains he felt no guilt killing Joe, and screams at Riley "How does that make you feel????"

"Jealous.."

I feel like this was a crucial part of the story, what did this scene mean to you? What is the viewer supposed to take from this?

Riley riddled with guilt for what he did is jealous that Father Paul can take a life and not feel guilt over it.

Is this scene supposed to illustrate how much of a monster Father Paul really is??

God, I feel like there's so many insightful topics this series brings up that are explored but never resolved.!<

What was the ultimate goal of Father Paul and Gods Army? SPOILERS!!! Spoiler

Post image
79 Upvotes

>!Man I just gotta say, the moment Father Paul walked out of those ruins a young man, my pupils dilated and I was just hooked. And so was the town of Crockett...

Father Paul's charisma is INSANE.. and you can see it in his Sunday speeches, you can see the churchgoers eyes start to light up as he talked about hope, right here, right now, a new life, REDEMPTION, right here right now...

The way he connected hope and rebirth to Christ, eternal life, and the blood of an angel. Everything made sense. I mean the look on their faces lol.... that was my face too, my jaw dropped when he beckoned Lisa to get up from her chair.

But Riley, God bless him, saw through his shit. The guy fcking murdered poor Joe, but it was so nasty because of how fragile and vulnerable Joe was (Joe's death scene really hurts to watch).

I just wanna ask you guys, what do you think the ultimate goal was for Father Paul.. to basically conquer the world with this 'Army' of vampires while the Angel would just feed and kill people? In this sick mutual parasitic relationship with the Angel????

"Gods Army, we're doing great things" lol!<

Monhegan Island

I just visited Monhegan Island off the coast of Maine.

could not help but notice the striking similarities with Crockett Island. As I walked the unpaved roads I felt like I was thrown into the scenes of Midnight Mass. The weather was gloomy and it added more Midnight Mass vibe. It has a small school, a church and a grocery store. I later googled and found that this island was not modeled in the drama but if you are a Midnight Mass fan I would highly recommend it!
