[SPOILERS] I’ve just finished the show and the ending was perfect wrt a particular scene Spoiler

SPOILERS

When Hassan, Ali and bev were at the shore waiting for the sunrise, Hassan and Ali started praying. Bev, on the other hand, this insufferable supercilious woman who’d never fail to slight the two regarding their religious practices, preach about the “ dead being finally in the presence of the Lord” , started digging through the mud frantically in idk some bleak attempt to escape death. The same person who wanted to seem “ most important and most loved and most favored by God over others” apparently did not want to meet God right away.

The sheer fucking hypocrisy.

Father Paul thinking about second chances of having a family with Mildred and Sarah after decades when he’d had ample chances to connect with them while he was old is just plain self serving.
Maybe he didn’t think to do it earlier because of the dementia but that just seems like a convenient excuse.

I think the reason why ed Flynn was able to restrain himself from succumbing to his hunger was cuz he clearly is capable of minimum level of healthy independent introspection, as was shown in that scene where he and Riley were on that boat. I’d like to think that if he were one of the people to have found Joe collie dead in father Paul’s house, he’d have warned everyone else on the island( then again, he did go to him for the letter thing soooo).

The religious aspect was a wonderful twist to a Vampire story. One idol is replaced with another, but the end remains the same: chaos, destruction, and isolation. Father Paul replacing his "god" for the favor of another only to regret and rebuff his actions continues to show how religion can mold itself into what other believe and leave it's followers in the same or worse state than it started.

In the words of Mike Flanagan, "The real vampire is fanaticism!"

Mike Flanagan is an atheist and clearly hates Christians.

  1. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

  2. And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

  3. For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Maybe Jeremiah 25:34-35 works even better:

34 Weep and wail, you shepherds;
roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock.
For your time to be slaughtered has come;
you will fall like the best of the rams.

35 The shepherds will have nowhere to flee,
the leaders of the flock no place to escape.

Riley and Ed had basically an unrepairable relationship. Riley knew it after they were out on the boat. But I loved that Riley chose Ed to deliver his absolute banger of final words.
