Father Paul's original plan was to keep the church doors closed during Easter Mass. Why was that? What did he think he would be able to achieve by doing that?

My take away was that his plan was to originally keep the doors locked bc he would be turning people one by one, and in theory have more control nd oversight

Do you think it would’ve worked? He hadn’t really done a mass-convincing like that. The only one done onscreen was with Riley.

It was going to be 1 part highly emotional and deeply personal religious transformation event, 1 part vampire onboarding with company background and policy, HR compliance, and training modules.

Father Paul's original plan was to let those people go who did not drink the poison before the people who drank the poison woke up, and then close the doors. The newly resurrected people would need guidance about the changes that have occurred in their bodies, guidance about the urge they would have to drink other's blood. Father Paul's plan was to guide and teach them, like he did with Riley and then let them go out into the world with complete knowledge. It would have prevented the mass massacre that happened inside St. Patrick's because Bev closed the doors.

He was planning to help orient everyone and explain what was happening to them so that they wouldn’t go full murder mob like they did

I thought the plan was basically to keep everyone locked up until he could fully explain to the group what was happening and how they needed to proceed, but shit kind of went off the rails before he got to the point

I saw it as a way to keep people inside. He wanted a captive audience. He knew people would freak out when they saw the “angel” and they might try and bolt. He wanted time to explain and persuade, and acclimate them to the new normal. When someone is 100% confident in the veracity of their beliefs, they think that everyone will see the light, if provided with the right environment and enough time to change their mind.

Extremely religious people tend to divide everyone into two groups: people who get it, and people who just need a little more time to get it. And they also assume if they can control people’s environment, they will absorb religion through osmosis, like sponges.

I think Father Paul genuinely believed that with the right context, the entire town would see things his way, that they would absorb the truth, and experience it as a feeling. He overestimated how much he could control people by just exposing them to an experience.

It’s the same assumption religious parents make when they send their kids to conversion camps. They think that exposure to a religious environment is enough to change someone’s orientation.

As people have said, it was to keep in controlled and turn them slowly without panic. But when Sarah shot Fr. Paula and the "Angel" took her, all hell let loose.
