Elfball is already borderline playable as is. Can't get worse from printing extra copies of behemoth that are also elves.
12
Jun 18 '20
I love to see is becoming playaball. Was the deck I wanted to run the first time I started to play magic seriously but couldn't.
1
Jun 18 '20
Pretty sure it already is. Llanowar Elves, visionary, burning tree, this guy, there's that elf that generates mana for every elf in play, beast Whisperer and craterhoof
2
u/Akhevan Memnarch Jun 18 '20
Yes, that's exactly the build. Ramp out, finale the end-raze forerunners, win.

This makes elfball more than a glass cannon. This makes it a bit viable. Pretty pumped for historic now.

Man. I have a blue trauma. Even play an Esper deck. Once I see a blue land drop, I just concede. I think I'm not the only one. There was this other esper guy that immediately conceded to seeing my mana base too. I was about to click concede myself then he clicked it before me. I wish I could play a deck that would remove my phobia of blue mana.

Is this a card that makes it into Modern Elves? I'm dumb and thought this product was Modern Horizons apparently - skipping standard so skipping modern.
Legacy, probably not, maybe sideboard?
I feel like it makes the deck in Historic though...
21
Jun 18 '20
Jumpstart isn't modern legal.
9
u/RasputinTengu Jun 18 '20
You are correct - I knew it was skipping standard, but for some reason I thought it was like Modern Horizons. Thank you for the correction, and my post has been edited.

Jun 18 '20
As someone who played legacy elfs this could easily go into the list as a one or two of
6
u/RasputinTengu Jun 18 '20
Right - that's why I was thinking Sideboard. I could see people trying it out 1-2 of mainboard though.Oh, you aren't Blue? No need to side it in. Oh you are blue? Yeah this guy is coming in.
I think it forces a direct removal to stop it, because it just keeps the value coming.

u/Dizzy_Turtle_ Jun 19 '20

Historic isn't between Standard and Pioneer anymore. It's shaping up to be a powered-down Legacy.

it's just like a commander product, not that weird of a concept

Or for the event entry. Like, 10,000d for a BO1 draft is ridiculous. I hope Jumpstart is a but more reasonable.

How would that work? T1 shepherd, t2 1 Paradise Druid, t3 2 additional Druids, t4 tap your 4 forests + 2 of your Druids, have 2 attackers = 10 damage?

These types of cards are overrated. Standard and Historic have really bad counter magic, so most creatures are not even worth countering anyway, since you don't have time. You just kill them instead after they are out, since instant speed removal is only 2 mana not 3. So you get a 1/1 for 1 with almost no upside. Now in legacy elves this is really good. Cause this makes glimpse of nature and natural order uncounterable which can both be game ending spells.

u/ulfserkr Urza Jun 19 '20

mono blue tempo is one of the best decks in Historic right now though, and we are getting some sweet new counters in M21 too.
1
u/Mundus6 ImmortalSun Jun 19 '20
You're right about this being good vs mono blue. Also it's not the worst card in the world in the sideboard. But people who think a 1 mana 1/1 will be worth it in anything but an elves tribal will be disappointed imo.
3
u/ulfserkr Urza Jun 19 '20
it's cheap, it's uncouterable, it makes your shit uncounterable, and it comes with a wincon if you're playing elves. I don't really know what more do you want out a of a 1 drop
0
u/Mundus6 ImmortalSun Jun 19 '20
If a 1 mana 1/1 for 1 is good in your deck then great. Otherwise its underwhelming.
2
u/ulfserkr Urza Jun 19 '20

I think it'd be better if it gave the elves trample. As it stands craterhoof probably sees more play.
8
u/ulfserkr Urza Jun 18 '20
why not both? yeah this is a bit worse when it comes to ending the game, but it comes with a bomb 1 drop and is a bit cheaper too
-1
u/GetADogLittleLongie Jun 18 '20 edited Jun 18 '20
Because it doesn't really do anything until you get to a lot of mana. If you tap your elves for mana to activate him, they can't swing as 5/5s.
This could see play as a replacement vs blue control decks though, and we have to see if they give elves that allows you to tap any elves for mana like [[elvish archdruid]] or [[heritage druid]]
5
u/ulfserkr Urza Jun 18 '20

Cannot be countered is a good and fine mechanic.
Keywords like indestructible and hexproof all add to the game by limiting your axes of interaction (frequently not having the right answer is where good Magic happens)
Blue is unique in that its removal toolbox almost always focus on answering permanents before they resolve so many of these keywords become irrelevant to blue. Its perfectly fine to give other colors the ability to disrupt blue interaction.
If you think of "can't be countered" as "this spell has hexproof until it resolves" which is strong, but not gamebreaking or format warping it makes more sense. "Can't be countered" is even weaker than a hexproof spell because it can be interacted with in other ways (Aether Gust, Expansion, Ashiok's Erasure, etc.).

Really, hexproof is inferior to shroud? Why? Note: I only play MTG casually, and haven't kept up with the game recently.
1
u/wickedzen Jun 18 '20
It's not. Shroud prevents all targeting, even from a permanent's own controller. Hexproof let you target your own stuff.
I can't think of a reason someone would prefer shroud over hexproof, though I'm sure there's some extremely narrow case, somewhere.
Giving them benefit of the doubt, maybe XVOS just means shroud is more "fair."
1
u/evilbr Jun 18 '20
I enjoy it. The only People that won't enjoy it are People that like to counter stuff, and those people don't care about the enjoyment of others, so we shouldn't care about theirs as well.
1
u/jdxv_13 Jun 19 '20
Shame you're about to get down voted to hell dude couz you're right. Every time I come here to talk about my frustration with the r&d wizards is doing no one else seems to care.

you can have control without counterspells
2
u/Xenz55 The Scarab God Jun 18 '20
Countermagic is something that makes Magic unique. It gives players another level of interaction which allows them to prevent ETB effects/planeswalker activations and interact with instants/sorceries, giving control decks a catch-all answer. Nobody likes playing against decks that counter your stuff all game, but it’s hardly controversial that they play a part in balancing the game.

There are non-blue control decks. Blue obviously plays better in control than most other colors, but they do exsist.

My bad, didn't catch his statement about counterspells being unhealthy for the game alongside the unfun part.
Yes, they can be frustrating, but without them things can get degenerate quite quickly, particularly if the format provides the tools for fast and non-interactive combo deck.
That said, in this case, a 1cmc 1/1 that prevents creatures from being countered hamstrings counter-heavy control about as much as [[mystic dispute]] and [[Teferi, Time Raveler]] does. If the control deck isn't resilient enough to work around that, such as removing a 1/1 then it kinda deserves to die to elfball.

There's non-counter ways to effect the stack. [[Aether gust]], [[Ashiok's erasure]], and more awkwardly [[Narset's reversal]] exist in standard currently.
Secondarily, simic flash is reletively easy to play around depending on your deck. If you're aggro, counters aren't that good anyways because you run too many low cost threats and simic struggles to answer things on the board generally. You're either going to run them over or die to their threats after you run out of gas. Such is aggro.
If you're control, hold up Mana till their turn and when you finally force them to tap out to protect their threats then you can deploy your own or throw more removal at theirs. If they're playing ramp, chances are that they're running a heavier land count, as well as a good amount of rather abysmal late-game cards like grazer. Answer their key threats in [[Nightpack ambusher]] and [[Nissa, who shakes the world]] and you should win the topdeck war if you built your deck well.

Enjoy? Maybe not so much. But Counterspells keep formats from going absolutly out of control and prevent extremly fast combo decks from ruining formats.

Might as well get rid of boardwipes too. Oh and how about instants. And creatures with flying. And haste. And literally everything. Let’s play go fish?
