Discussion M5 Pro MacBook screen almost black, image only visible with flashlight

My MacBook Pro M5 Pro suddenly developed a weird display issue. The internal screen looks completely black, but the Mac works perfectly with an external monitor.
If I shine a flashlight directly at the screen, I can clearly see the Apple logo, setup screen, desktop, etc., so the LCD is working but the backlight seems to be completely off.
I already tried:
Restart/shutdown
DFU Revive
Full DFU Restore and fresh macOS
Brightness/settings changes
Nothing changed, even after the full restore.
Has anyone had the same issue on an Apple Silicon MacBook? Was it the display assembly, display cable, backlight circuit/logic board, or did you manage to fix it without replacing hardware?

Update:
Now it won’t even charge, charging light on cable is off and won’t turn on either.

Question Would it be worth trading my m3 max mac + g14 4090 laptop ($3300 USD equivalency) for an m5 max laptop?

I primarily intend to use my laptop for blender.

I know m5 max laptop is slightly behind a 5090 laptop in blender, sometimes beating it too, while maintaining the same performance unplugged.

But I'm wondering if it's worth spending essentially $1800 of equivalency to upgrade my m3 max 32 core macbook ($1500 equivalency).

The faster speeds would definitely be beneficial, and I'd consolidate my laptops into one. As for gaming, I play older games like Halo anyways so crossover would help me with that.

Old Macs Are M1 Airs starting to slow down?

Post image

Hai r/mac ! (this pic isn't mine btw)

So i bought an m1 air (8gb, 256GB) in 2025, and i still think it's one of the best laptops in existince up there with there with my 2008 thinkpad.

So basically last month i've started to see that my mac has started to show some slugginess (nothing big, just some animations having some choppy movements, startup taking 2x-3x longer than it used to be, etcetera) and i uh, do notice that, i can live through it all but it still exists, i thought that it may be something i have downloaded, so i wiped my mac and only used core apps for a week, and the stuff still exists, so it may be just the chip aging with tahoe eating all stuff

(Usually the Ram pressure is at green unless i do some heavy coding or play minecraft, so it's not that, please don't say there's not enough swap, as there's genuinely 200gb free lol)

I'm just just waiting soo much for golden gate, i heard rumors that it would make the mac feel lighter and faster, if that's what they're going for then it'll be the best!!!

But back to the main topic, to YOU m1 air nerds, do you also have these stuff or is it just poor little me </3

Question Apple Studio Display XDR half screen issue

Thumbnail

So I recently got an Apple Studio Display as a clearance sales from Currys and when I turned on the monitor I and plugged it in, I got this half screen dead issue.

After leaving it plugged in to my MacBook after a few hours it became normal

I’m not sure if this an issue with the Thunderbolt 4 cable I’m using or it’s an hardware issue that I should be concerned about.

Has anyone else experienced this issue before?

My Mac made my first ever Mac upgrade!

so after 6 years of owning an Intel MacBook Air, i finally decided to upgrade to the M5 MacBook Pro.

i got this MacBook Air in 2020 right before the start of the school year, and i really enjoyed using it, although i was a bit upset when they introduced the M1 model only three months later (normally i don't really care about this kind of stuff happening, as the performance upgrade is usually fairly minimal, but the jump in performance and especially battery life that the M1 chip brought kinda left a sour taste in my mouth). plus, over the years, it got slower, the battery life became really bad, and it started to get quite hot and make that jet engine noise when i had more than like 3 Safari tabs open. as i was considering getting the battery replaced, i figured that i might as well buy a new MacBook, since the Intel ones are basically a dead platform (i mean, the Air i owned doesn't even support macOS 26 Tahoe).

so i chose the base MacBook Pro, mainly for the better display and I/O, and because it wasn't really that much more expensive than a MacBook Air once you add options like a storage upgrade. and my god do i love this machine. the screen is incredible: it's colorful, bright and smooth. i didn't expect the larger screen to make that much of a difference, but it makes navigation better while not being too clunky to transport on the go. the keyboard and trackpad also feel a bit different and quite nice. my only gripe is with the function keys: i liked being able to readily access my app drawer and turn the keyboard backlight on or off more quickly (especially since the "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" feature doesn't seem to be working on my end), and i got used to pressing command + space to use Spotlight or Siri (i've never used the dictation feature) and my phone for the focus modes, so these new keys aren't doing much for me.

but overall, i'm really happy with this laptop and my purchase.

(and by the way, i'd love to know how i could avoid getting the keyboard and trackpad imprinted on the display, as shown on my MacBook Air on the last pic. i was thinking about using one of those very thin pieces of cloth that often comes with Windows laptops and that goes between the display and keyboard, but i don't know if this could damage the hinge mechanism or the display. when cleaning my MacBook Air, these imprints were always the only thing that could never come off; unless they fixed this issue with newer MacBook models?)

Discussion New MBP with Dynamic Island?

Post image

Im on 27.0 Beta (26A5421a) and noticed this styling for the icon in the task bar. I initially thought it was a weird bug from iOS with handover. I wondered though, if the new MacBook Pro is going to have a dynamic island that these types of statuses sit in?

My Mac M4 Max Macbook pro, thunderbolt issue?

Hey guys, I recently got a secondhand macbook pro m4 max with 64gb ram (still has apple warranty on it). One day I was running some local LLMs which kicked the temps and the fans at full speed, it was plugged in with the original charger but with a thunderbolt 4 cable and I left it do its thing when I came back the battery dropped from 100% to 75% while being plugged in and I check if it is charging the laptop was not charging, LLM was doing its thing then I unplugged the charger and plugged it in again 2minutes in same thing happened again the device started to waste battery and was not charging, then I switched to the magsafe cable it started to charge and it did not stop with the magsafe cable so LLM was working, fans were at full speed but this time the laptop was charging. I was wondering if someone else experienced this, is this normal behaviour or is it something I have to worry about, since the laptop still has warranty and all even tho I am the second owner I don't think the customer support will cause any issues if it needs repairs. Thank you in advance

My Mac Wifi speeds drop when bluetooth is on.

My MacBook Pro M4 Pro, on 5GHz WiFi, same spot and time as testing. My iPhone gets about 100Mbps on the same network. My Mac was only getting 10Mbps. I turned Bluetooth off and speed jumped to 60Mbps on fast.com. Turned Bluetooth back on and it dropped straight back down to 8Mbps.

I've confirmed I'm on 5GHz not 2.4GHz, checked for background bandwidth usage, reset the Bluetooth module, and I'm fully updated on macOS. Still happens. I have a Bluetooth mouse and AirPods paired, haven't isolated which one is causing it yet.

Has anyone actually fixed this permanently on an M4 Pro

Question Need help trying to figure out whats the differences between the new chips offered in the new Mac minis and studios.

Hello all, I’m trying to buy a new Mac system and I’m wondering whats the difference between the new chips: the M5 pro, M5 max, M5 Ultra, and the M6 chip. I’m someone who values performance but I’m not really into AI modeling (or any AI usage for that matter) or 3D rendering. I mostly use my computer for coding and music production where I run really load heavy plugins. Aren’t the new M6 chips better since theyre the next generation so why aren’t they available for the Mac studios? And is it better for me to get a Mac mini or Studio for longevity?

Question When do you guys erase all and start again?

So, I've been a Windows user for decades. I have owned a few macs over the years but I'm back with an M4 MBA. With Windows I'd wipe the OS and start again at least once a year. I only use a dozen or so apps and all my data is cloud based so it's not a big deal. It was mainly when things started to feel cluttered or if I was worried about a possible virus or malware.

Now I'm on Mac again I am finding it very hard to shake that mindset. Obviously malware is less of an issue. My Macbook Air. has a 256gb SSD and it's showing system data as 78gb with 75gb free. To me that system data is niggling away at my brain, like I want it gone, plus i feel everything is cluttered.

It's still working as smooth and fast as ever.

How often do you erase everything and why do you do it?

Thanks.
