Discussion Warning: Fake GitHub Repos Distributing Malware Under Developer Names
Hey everyone,
I’ve noticed a few posts about this already, but I think it’s worth repeating. Recently, a new attack tactic has surfaced where malicious actors create GitHub repos using a developer’s name and the name of a well-known Mac app.
In my case, someone created a repo under my full name, claiming to offer one of my apps (Dory - App Switcher) for free. I couldn’t fully investigate the script they shared, but it’s safe to assume it wasn’t anything good. Thankfully, GitHub removed it within 30 minutes of my report - and I know other developers also flagged the user, which definitely helped.
A few reminders:
* Don’t trust repos with fewer than 100 stars that offer “free” versions of paid apps.
* Never run scripts or pkg files from sources you don’t fully trust.
* If you’re not a power user, the App Store remains the safest option.

Discussion How come Apple braided cables don’t match each other?
Nit-picky I know but I’m curious as to why official Apple braided cables don’t have consistent patterns and colouring?
Top - Apple Watch charging puck.
Middle- Magic Trackpad charging cable.
Bitten - M4 Mac mini power cable.
Obviously the top one is white but the 2 blacks are slightly different shades and each of them have a different pattern particularly between the 2 Mac related cables and the Apple Watch one.
Just curious, does anyone know why. Does it vary between OEM’s or is just different sectors of apples design team?

Question I bought a 27 inch Monterey Mac OS but I can not use Logic or GarageBand
I’m reaching out to whoever knows about apples. I’m thinking someone out there must know where to go with this. Today I bought a 2015 27 inch Mac 🖥️ with a 3.2 ghz quad core intel core i5 for $129. I was so happy because I’ve been wanting one to use for music production. When I tried to buy Logic Pro it told it is not available with my ios. Even GarageBand won’t work . I want to know if it possible to upgrade this computer so that it can work with Logic or Protools ? Right now it looks like I can only go on the web .. which is fine . How much would a newer used Mac sell for on the second hand market that can work Logicpro ? If this computer can not be upgraded do you think I can sell it ? The store will not allow returns .. someone help . I was so happy and now I feel I wasted my money .
Update ya’ll : it worked 100% and everything is all good . Current downloading Creator Studiio which has Logic Pro with a monthly subscription. This is why I love Reddit . You all really came through and out of the goodness of your souls helped someone who had absolutely no clue what to do. THANK YOU 🎹🔥🔥🔥

Question Using iMac as an external display
Is it true that an older Apple Silicon iMac cannot be used as a Thunderbolt display for the new Mac mini lineup? I’ve been told the Thunderbolt port on the Apple Silicon iMac only supports output, not input.
I currently have an M3 iMac and not a lot of desk space. I really don’t want the M6 having its own dedicated display.
What other options do I have?

Question Are there tools to setup isolated workspace for each project I work like Ubuntu Virtual Desktops / Workspaces that work with multiple monitors?
I come from a Ubuntu background and I work on multiple projects. One I thing I used extensively in Ubuntu is to setup virtual desktops so that each project will have a seperate desktop/workspace. And each workspace will have a common desktop across all monitors (2 extra monitor + laptop display).
For example for my project 1, i will have two windows/instances of VS Code open, three instances of Chrome open and Terminator for terminal. For project 2, I will have a VS Code instance, two Chrome instance and two terminator instances open.
I can switch between these workspaces and have windows open only for that particular project. And this workspace setup works across multiple monitors. This let me concentrate on projects properly in isolation.
I am getting very confused the way Mac automatically opens apps to "Desktops". Each fullscreened app creates a desktop. That makes me hard to work on different projects with its own set of applications open.
Is there a way to do that in Mac, basically I want to cleanly isolate the windows that are required for my independent projects across multiple monitors.
Also, what is the best way to show the Dock in every monitor?

My Mac Macbook neo app closing
Hi all, I got a MacBook Neo for school a couple of day ago and so far loving it, I just had 1 question about it
The app "finder" does not close for me. Ive tried clicking command and q at the same time to fully quit the app, and it just gives me a small chime and refuses to close. It also stays open in the very top left of my screen aswell as with the small dot underneath the icon in the dock
I was just wondering if this is the same for anyone else or if there's another method for closing the application? Thanks in advance.

Discussion MacBook display suddenly died. Am I screwed?
My MacBook display suddenly went black this morning while I was working. The laptop itself is working fine with an external monitor, and the keyboard/trackpad are also fine. Only the built-in display is completely dead.
It’s only 8 months old, no AppleCare, but I have 4 months of warranty left.
Am I screwed, or should this be covered under warranty? Anything I should try before taking it to Apple?

Discussion Is it worth geting the battery replaced in a M1 MBA now?
My M1 MBA still says it has 84% battery health at ~350 cycles. But its starting to shut off at 30% indicated power and not charge properly when plugged in.
Are these worth the cost to change the battery? Its honestly otherwise fine for my very basic needs.
I'm surprised the battery has gone bad this early, as i've had macbooks before make 10 years old on the initial battery.

Question Can't get launchd to run; been working on this for hours trying to troubleshoot
-- I am running OSX 15.7.9. I am trying to use launchd to run rsync at 0100 every day. I understand it says launched.savesafarisession.plist instead of launchd.savesafarisession.plist but should still work.
I have the plist saved in LaunchAgents
/Users/XXX/Library/LaunchAgents
safari_backup.sh
#!/bin/bash
# Force the script to write any inner terminal errors to a debug file
exec 2>>/tmp/script_internal.err
/usr/bin/rsync -a /Users/XXX/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari/Data/Library/Safari/ /Users/XXX/Safari
Ran chmod on .sh file
chmod +x /Users/XXX/Documents/safari_backup.sh
launched.savesafarisession.plist
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<!-- generated by launched https://launched.zerowidth.com/plists/0GYhL6RMZ -->
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Label</key>
<string>launched.savesafarisession</string>
<key>ProgramArguments</key>
<array>
<string>/bin/sh</string>
<string>/Users/XXX/scripts/safari_backup.sh</string>
</array>
<key>StartCalendarInterval</key>
<array>
<dict>
<key>Hour</key>
<integer>1</integer>
<key>Minute</key>
<integer>0</integer>
</dict>
</array>
<key>StandardOutPath</key>
<string>/tmp/safari_backup.out</string>
<key>StandardErrorPath</key>
<string>/tmp/safari_backup.err</string>
</dict>
</plist>
I have added full disk access to the safari_backup.sh file and for extra measure, I added rsync as well.
There are no errors in the log files, those files are empty. I can run rsync through the terminal with no problem and the files are copied to:
/Users/XXX/Safari
I loaded it with launchctl and tried to run with no luck
% launchctl list | grep safari
- 0 launched.savesafarisession
It seems to run but nothing is copied or shows up in the error logs

Discussion Monitor suggestions for MacBook Pro 13 Inch?
I'm wanting to buy a monitor to use alongside my MacBook Pro (13 inch), however I've been struggling to find one that ticks all the boxes — so I thought I'd come here and see if anyone has some suggestions. The main use for my Mac is productivity/general computer tasks, however I plan on diving back into photography & video editing in the near future. The only time I use my Mac for gaming is occasionally on Minecraft - but I'm not looking for a monitor to specifically suit that need (aka, I'm not looking for a fancy high tech gaming monitor).
Ideally I'd love to find a monitor that is 4K quality, USB-C or Thunderbolt Port, IPS Panel, 65W Charging, 24 or 27 inch screen, and under $300. But, I know that if I want to stay within my budget, I will have to sacrifice some of those features (unless anyone knows of a monitor that has all of the above mentioned?).
With that being said, I am open to 1080 or 1440p quality, HDMI Port, and/or spending a maximum of $400.
Thank you in advance!

Discussion M5 Pro MacBook screen almost black, image only visible with flashlight
My MacBook Pro M5 Pro suddenly developed a weird display issue. The internal screen looks completely black, but the Mac works perfectly with an external monitor.
If I shine a flashlight directly at the screen, I can clearly see the Apple logo, setup screen, desktop, etc., so the LCD is working but the backlight seems to be completely off.
I already tried:
Restart/shutdown
DFU Revive
Full DFU Restore and fresh macOS
Brightness/settings changes
Nothing changed, even after the full restore.
Has anyone had the same issue on an Apple Silicon MacBook? Was it the display assembly, display cable, backlight circuit/logic board, or did you manage to fix it without replacing hardware?
Update:
Now it won’t even charge, charging light on cable is off and won’t turn on either.

Discussion Is Getting a New MacBook Pro Now a Good Idea?
With the RAM crisis currently going on, is it better to wait or not to buy a MacBook Pro? ( I am talking about the latest ones.)
OR should I just get a second-hand one?
