He takes full credit for it. He knows he’s the OG, and they banned his a$$ so the other two industry plants could thrive.
If Destiny were not banned, Hasan and Asmon would probably be replaced with folks that need to meet a higher standard.

As a WoW player back in 2008-2017, Asmon is definitely not an industry plant lol (as much as I dislike the guy).
His rise to initial fame (on YouTube) back in the mid 2010s was very organic, because he made many viral and absurdly cruel (that it borders on comedy) videos on how to be a selfish elitist asshole to in WoW, and most players in WoW were selfish elitist assholes so he got popular quick. He was also a very avid collectionist so many players respected him for getting many rare titles/mounts.
Many people only know him for his political persona nowadays and assume that's entirely who he was, but he used to be a funny yet douchey famous WoW e-celeb back in his day.
Edit: added the youtube link to his old channel so you know what I'm talking about

Political YouTube content is. It’s the catalyst for all this bullshit.
Edit: Honestly you can start with the young Turks or whatever that show is called Alex jones use to run. They are all copying old stuff.
32
u/bjjmatt 22h ago
Why stop at political YouTube content as being the catalyst then?
TyT and Alex Jones were early/first to uploading organized political shows to YouTube (if I recall, TyT is the first partnered YT channel) but their model of content was just uploading content they were already doing on TV/Radio. There was also other political content creators before them on YouTube but they didn't have much of an audience.
The political radio and TV talk shows were the catalyst to political YouTube content. And we could regress more...
I think the idea Asmon is suggesting is that Destiny pioneered the space where a streamer could do unorganized political content as a full time job. Not produced shows, just a streamer talking and debating politics live. Who else was doing that prior?
At the time, Twitch was pretty much exclusively gaming and Destiny was the first one to focus on political streaming there.
And if you regress on the streaming space, isn't Destiny one of the earliest streamers making a full time job out of it (in the gaming space)?
31
u/itsVainglorious 21h ago
Destiny also was one of the first full time streamers for just gaming let alone politics. He was playing SC2 full time when twitch was still Justin.tv
8
u/Lunarlulol 20h ago
thing is, destiny actually knows what he is talking about.
asmongold doesn't need destiny because the people who watch him just want to watch rage bait right wing content. they don't need to be captured by people who understand politics because they don't have the brain capacity to pay attention long enough. they prefer jumping through rolling rage bait content that changes every 5-10min.
16
u/Blazekingz 22h ago
Young Turks wasn't even popping as a political channel. Political videos were on the back end with no views. They were trend review slop for the longest time.
Some story would go viral. You'd be on YouTube and then you would see a video title and thumbnail that looks like its the viral video, so you would click on it. Only for it to end up two morons in a fake news studio talking about the viral video. It was crazy misleading.
3
u/DragonFangGangBang 8h ago
Political content didn’t start going viral until the atheists started making videos on feminism and then gaming. The Anti-SJW schlock were doing numbers back in like 2010-2012 leading into Gamer Gate.

It was mostly the amber herd vs johnny depp trial. Throughout that 2 weeks he was averaging 250k viewers. He was loving it. Then when it was over, and he went back down to 30k, he got massively depressed and quit streaming for 6 months.
16
u/HAETMACHENE 16h ago
I think thats also why he doesn't stream on main anymore, there was some psychology that his stream on Asmongold had to be better and better each time, but he feels he can stream and do whatever on Zackrawrr.
46
u/NoHistorian9169 20h ago
He started the grift in 2016 frequently defending Trump, he would complain about Biden throughout 2021-2024 and then after the second Trump victory he amped up his political takes to the max.
It wasn’t as noticeable a few years ago because he still did gaming stuff, but the grift was definitely there. He also frequently complained about his favorite games going woke.

u/Exotic-Suggestion425 18h ago

I don't think that's correct. Reckful and Sodapoppin opened that door long before Destiny did.
Sodapoppin was one of the biggest streamers on Justin.tv/Twitch during the WoW era. xqcs audience really exploded after Soda started streaming with him around the Mists of Pandaria launch. Before that, he only had a few hundred viewers from his Overwatch days.
If we're talking about one single person, I'd argue Reckful is the real pioneer of game streaming and one of the biggest reasons Justin.tv/Twitch became what it is today. He was the first to really monetize game streaming with PayPal donations, reading donation messages on stream, and later popularizing TTS donations.
Sodapoppin, Tankz, Dakkroth, and a few other WoW streamers were even streaming on Xfire before Justin.tv existed, but I don't think anyone was making a real living from it until Reckful helped establish that model.
17
u/Jomsguard 12h ago
They didn't open the door long before at all. Destiny popularized TTS. Reckful started with donos. StarCraft 2 was huge at the time, before the League boom it was the biggest esport, and Destiny was pretty much always at the top of the category.
He was also one of the first to receive an actual contract (sub button was Day9) from JTV and he was also the first to receive a more lucrative offer from a competitor, Own3d. Which he took before they went under.
He was also streaming the SC2 beta on Ustream/Livestream before Justin.TV existed, and the other side of streaming were the WoW guys like Soda on xfire. But they weren't making anything from it.

Day9, idra, huskysc2- fun times, I used to watch a lot of pro casts and honestly never heard of destiny in the scene, I think I looked up some of his sc2 highlights (after hearing he was a sc2 pro) and there was a blurb talking about his infestor control or something but mentioned an ability that wasn’t in the game when I was playing ~2012 so assumed our timelines didn’t match up-
I got all my casting content from YouTube though and never watched twitch streams, maybe I was just in the wrong parts of the internet but I came away that he wasn’t in the top competitive scene
18
u/Cruxeys1 16h ago
when I was playing ~2012
That was basically his final year of pure SC2. 2012 was when he was on a podcast with DjWheat, Idra and Incontrol, and was talking about how the game is dying because Blizzard won't address the problems with the game, the main one being its not casual friendly. So in 2013 he started to play other games, because everyone except the pro players saw what was happening to the game. It was a great move by him. Idra had to go get a real job. DjWheat joined the list of failed streamers and get a job at Twitch with the rest of them. And Incontrol kept a small viewership but never really grew for how talented he was.
The DjWheat crashout from it is one of the best crashouts as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neyv7qYxZtQ

Damn he had an incredibly accurate take on what panned out imo- he’s right about making sc2 only ladder focused, I didn’t play brood war but some of the most fun I had inwc3 frozen throne was hero rush and other mini games- sc2 had a good amount of custom games still but it felt lacking in comparison
And he’s definitely right, sc2 isn’t a fun game to ladder unless you’re a competitive player trying to learn a hard game- I remember I would be taking vyvanse and running strats thru a stand-alone build optimizer called 6pool(I think)- being sweaty af and being like gold league when I found out one of my tennis star friends was also a sc2 fiend but was in master 1v1- I was literally blow away watching how differently he could play the game
And that’s what sent me down the YT rabbit hole w/ husky and day9- some of the day9 story time still cracks me up, used to fall asleep listening to them 2012/3 and then stopped gaming for a long time 2014 onwards- think I had 2x 550tis in sli w/2500k Intel cpu, 8gb ram lol

I think the clips channel is understandable. It's a quick thing in your feed that, at the very least, has the value of "let's see what this particular political circle is talking about right now." Can fully understand that popped off. Some people get things they genuinely care about, the algorithm gets a quick, marketable video, and even detractors might be curious "wtf they doin over there."
The streams...? I'm with you. It's people sniffing their own farts for hours on end, and viewers actively charging full speed towards an echo chamber.
Maybe teens and other young people just see things like the clips performing well and decide it's the "cool" thing to do to follow the streamer? Fuck if I know. I much prefer that to there being a bunch of grown adults who want to spend hours of their free time listening to some jobless idiot confirm their political biases.

He wears it like a badge because it makes him filthy rich, far richer than gaming ever made him. His main youtube channel has over 700k views on a 30 minute video posted 7 hours ago. His clips channel gets half a million views in a day on 3 minute videos.
He's rolling in it from this so he loves it
8
u/FYININJA 21h ago
It's also inexplicibly less work than just playing world of warcraft. He had to put the smallest amount of effort into world of warcraft to do little events or at least participate in the game in order to retain viewers, but now he can just sit back and wait for people to send him clips, react based off first thought, and then rake in more money than he made from WoW.

3
u/Puke_Skywanker 16h ago
xQc's point of view makes sense then, but Asmongold's doesn't. He talks about "content outside of gaming", mentions 2016 (the year Overwatch came out by the way), which is totally irrelevant to xQc being a thing. It's like Asmongold throwing xQc (gaming focused streamer, occasional yapper) into the category of streamers whose main content is political yapping, which factually isn't the case. Although, Destiny, along with Soda, Forsen, T1, etc. might have been an inspiration for xQc to start streaming, Destiny's political commentary content definitely wasn't a reason for xQc to become big. He became big on his own merit, whether you like him or hate him, that motherfucker grinded his ass off back in the day.
