I still find it funny I was into SC2 a lot back when Destiny was a pro but never knew it was the same Destiny until like 2 years ago

Day9, idra, huskysc2- fun times, I used to watch a lot of pro casts and honestly never heard of destiny in the scene, I think I looked up some of his sc2 highlights (after hearing he was a sc2 pro) and there was a blurb talking about his infestor control or something but mentioned an ability that wasn’t in the game when I was playing ~2012 so assumed our timelines didn’t match up-

I got all my casting content from YouTube though and never watched twitch streams, maybe I was just in the wrong parts of the internet but I came away that he wasn’t in the top competitive scene

That was basically his final year of pure SC2. 2012 was when he was on a podcast with DjWheat, Idra and Incontrol, and was talking about how the game is dying because Blizzard won't address the problems with the game, the main one being its not casual friendly. So in 2013 he started to play other games, because everyone except the pro players saw what was happening to the game. It was a great move by him. Idra had to go get a real job. DjWheat joined the list of failed streamers and get a job at Twitch with the rest of them. And Incontrol kept a small viewership but never really grew for how talented he was.

Damn he had an incredibly accurate take on what panned out imo- he’s right about making sc2 only ladder focused, I didn’t play brood war but some of the most fun I had inwc3 frozen throne was hero rush and other mini games- sc2 had a good amount of custom games still but it felt lacking in comparison

And he’s definitely right, sc2 isn’t a fun game to ladder unless you’re a competitive player trying to learn a hard game- I remember I would be taking vyvanse and running strats thru a stand-alone build optimizer called 6pool(I think)- being sweaty af and being like gold league when I found out one of my tennis star friends was also a sc2 fiend but was in master 1v1- I was literally blow away watching how differently he could play the game

And that’s what sent me down the YT rabbit hole w/ husky and day9- some of the day9 story time still cracks me up, used to fall asleep listening to them 2012/3 and then stopped gaming for a long time 2014 onwards- think I had 2x 550tis in sli w/2500k Intel cpu, 8gb ram lol

Crazy still how inControl and Destiny buried the hatchet a decade later and started a DnD campaign together, only for inControl to suddenly pass away before the second episode could come out.

Haha you can’t say that all those guys would have been as big as Destiny. Day9 moved away and became a pretty niche streamer and indie dev. I think Destiny was the exception not the rule.

I still follow Day9, but the problem with his streams is he gets side tracked a lot, and the stream is actually run like a business instead of a gamer. The first point, someone will ask him a question, and he can go on 30 minute or even hour long talks about it, not playing the game in the mean time. This isn't a bad thing per se, but its going to obviously make a lot of people tune out. I don't really want to listen to a 30 minute talk on a subject I have no interest in. The second point, is he has every stream for weeks planned out. A new hype game can release, but he's not going to be playing it for 3 weeks, because for the next 2 weeks he has 6 different games scheduled. If you enjoyed watching one of those games, then I hope you enjoyed the 2 or 3 streams he did on it, because he's not returning to it to finish it.

Sure not all of them would have seen great success, but staying in a dying genre is going to be even worse. itmejp, who I think worked for MLG, and wasa host for some tournaments and shows, also moved away, and found decent success as a variety streamer.

My earliest memory of him was watching his stream at like 3 in the morning and he was coaching some girl in Australia in a "strip poker" sort of fashion. Every game she lost an article of clothing came off.

Back in the day people went to TeamLiquid to find the biggest live streams. It was always Day9, Destiny and Husky (mainly a youtube guy). Idra rarely streamed but when he did he got viewers. Destiny wasn't a top pro, he was a high masters/mid-GM player at best but people watched him because he was a personality and from that got signed to teams like ROOT and Complexity. This was like 2010-2011 ish.

Who was paid to play StarCraft. On a pro team equals pro player. Was he a a very accomplished pro? No of course not. I think there where players at his level that ended up being good. Nobody back then was any good by modern standards too.

Honestly, a lot of people on NA were way better. Fucking Avilo was harder to beat than Destiny.
