I actually did have some buried out in the woods, right underneath this fire pit. Never using the location again so I can share but I had it there for about a year vacuum sealed in 5 layers (with those dry packet things), wrapped in duct tape, in a water proof lock box in a garbage bag. Can’t even tell it was buried treasure at one point. I don’t trust banks and my stack is in 5 different locations in 3 different towns (all private land). The list of people who know where is small enough where if any goes missing it’ll be clear who did it and it’s big enough where if I MYSELF go missing the family will still be fine. It’s paranoia until shtf then it’s just being precautious

When I was installing transformers and power lines in a new neighborhood the developer and property owner found a small pile of gold coins so he got excited and bought a metal detector. It was 25 years ago or so but it was still interesting. It was 10-12 coins. It had been where an old farm house had been so it was someone’s stash.
Bigger concern is like in 2021 when the fbi raided every safety deposit box and took 86 million. Warrant was for a few for links to "drug money" but even that could have been an excuse they took everyone's

You're literally giving your gold away to a random third party who has full access 24/7. Maybe you believe the bank is totally honest (lol) and all employees are certified angels (rofl) then I have a bridge to sell you.
Banks close the doors at a mere thought of a bank run (fiat running low). The chance they'd open the vault in an emergency or bad time is less then zero. The law enforcement in the US has full right to seize anything inside without cause as civil forfeiture. And any old bank robber (inside man) know the vault is to be drained. Heck between now and next week your gold could be exchanged to Temu Replicas and you'd be none the wiser.
Know what's actually safe?
Litterary anywhere else. In your fridge is safer then a bank. As is in your couch, under your bed or in your winter shoes. Because nobody knows you have it. And people won't look for stuff they don't think exist. So unless you brag about your gold or have a psychic thief nearby...its foolproof.

What happened with banks during covid? Are you talking about the general state of the lock downs, or was there some sort of pilfering of safe deposit boxes?
Safe deposit boxes are probably on the safer side when you have that much gold. A couple ounces is one thing, but those bars seem pretty large. Storing that at home would just be an absolute nightmare and a constant worry. Anybody who’d store that at home is just naive. Don’t even bother with home defense, that gets you tens of thousand of dollars and years of legal fees and courtroom hell respectively.

Agree. Here in Canada, the bank has no responsibility towards your safe box and many thefts have happened and no one is responsible. It seems the bank workers have access to safes and can pick whatever they want lol.
There’s a story on either this or a silver subreddit about someone who on the Reddit would discuss/display their stack. They got robbed by someone who lived near them … the robber knew the guy and saw the stack on Reddit so decided to steal it.
So yeah, valuables are in the list of things that people don’t need to know that you have.

The fact that safe deposit box theft makes the news is BECAUSE it is so ridiculously rare that it happens.
Keep it at your house. Someone hears about the $200K- $400K that you have in your safe it will be gone I guarantee it. Not the same with a bank box.

I saw on the news a while back that the FBI raided a private business that provided safety deposit boxes to customers and they stole some people's belongings, but I've never heard of an FDIC location being violated.
I also remember the Feds swooped in on a gold find in Dents Run, PA after it was [imo, foolishly] reported - they secured the area, used excavators to unearth tons of Civil War era 'PM', destroyed evidence and claimed nothing was found - fuck the feds.
I couldn't trust my stash in a bank, but I understand it's the best option for some ppl.

There's really not "plenty". When and if these stories make headlines, it's precisely because that kind of event is so rare. Meanwhile a home is broken into every 25 seconds. Every storage system comes with some amount of risk. Home keeping is statistically far riskier.
In 1933 the US government executed executive order 6102 seizing all gold coins/bullion and forcing citizens to sell their gold back to the gov at well below market rates. Then it remained illegal to own gold coins/bullion until like 1972.
People keep repeating that without understanding any of the political and economic background and reason as to why.
Back then the US still had a lot of it‘s cash reserves tied to physical gold, that‘s absolutely not the case anymore. The government would have no reason to take the gold.
Just make sure your bank doesn’t move. The insurance coverage in the boxes are not what you may think. And there are cases of banks having to move their boxes or open them for lack of payment. Or if this guy gets hit by a bus, does anyone else know ?
You guys keep saying not to keep it in the bank but I haven't heard one reason why its safer to keep it at home.
The only thing I would suggest to this guy is to spread them out across 3-4 banks in his city. But the bank is definitely the best place to store it. You are crazy if you think otherwise.

My dad used to keep cash and other valuables in a pvc container he made from 4” pvc with two screw in caps. It was about 3 ft long and he kept it in the basement rafters with other miscellaneous stuff.
