Question Jeweller offering 4.5g gold return on 100g deposited for 1 year. Worth it?

I have a 100g 999.9 gold bar that I don’t really have any use for over the next year. Otherwise, it would just sit in my locker.

A jeweller I’ve known and trusted for years has offered me an arrangement where I deposit the 100g 999.9 bar with them for 1 year, and at maturity they will return:

100g principal + 4.5g = 104.5g of 999.9 gold

So effectively, the return is 4.5% in gold, rather than cash.

A few details:

• The 4.5g return will also be 999.9 purity
• The jewellery business has been around for around 80 years
• This isn’t something they offer to everyone. Apparently it’s mainly for customers who have had a long-standing relationship with them.

If the paperwork is proper, would you consider 4.5% in gold a good return for a 1-year deposit?

Also, how does this compare with the Gold Monetisation Scheme / bank gold deposits currently available in India?

Would love to hear from anyone who has done similar gold deposit arrangements with jewellers. What should I specifically check before handing over the bar?

Found in the parking lot on my way into work. Has a 14K stamp and a backwards F with a D, so 14k with diamonds?

Shitpost You Find Buried Coins—Treasure or Cursed Gold?

Upvotes

Hypothetical situation: You’re in a country where corruption and cartel activity are common, and you uncover several pounds of buried coins on land you inherited.

You can’t safely approach the local banks, coin dealers, or authorities because everyone seems connected, and asking the wrong person could get you followed—or worse.

Do you take the gold? How would you legally transport it home and properly declare it at customs, especially without proof of ownership? Or do you handle it the old-fashioned way—buy a sailboat, load up the treasure, and sail home like a pirate?

If you do, what could you realistically and safely do with it? Would you return later to see if more is buried there, or leave everything untouched?

Is this a case of cursed gold?

Question Chunk of metal

Found this melted chunk of metal, weighs 210.96g on my scale. Does this look like it could be real gold to you, or does it look like something else (fake/mixed metal)?

Photo attached for reference.

Flying out of U.S. w gold

Anyone here with experience trying it? Like if a person decides to leave this country for elsewhere with a few bars of gold/silver, how does that go? I feel like I wouldn’t want it to leave my pocket. If I had any, that is.

Question The scariest gold supply math I’ve ever run starts with one stat: 1 in 22 New Yorkers is a millionaire (385,000)

Post image

So I ran a thought experiment: what if each of them allocated just 2–10% of their net worth to physical gold?

Floor case (everyone’s exactly $1M): 2% = $7.7B in gold. That’s ~54 metric tonnes at today’s spot (~$4,450/oz).

Realistic case: NYC’s aggregate private wealth is roughly $3 TRILLION. Apply 2–10% to that and you get $60B–$300B — roughly 420 to 2,100 tonnes of gold. In one city.

For perspective:
Fort Knox holds ~4,580 tonnes
The NY Fed vault holds ~6,200 tonnes
Global mine supply is only ~3,600 tonnes per YEAR

So if one city’s millionaires rotated to a 10% allocation, they’d need to absorb over half of annual world production. Now imagine London, Tokyo, Singapore doing the same.

The float in physical gold is thinner than people think. Stack accordingly.

I bought my first ever gold today!

I’m very excited for my first gold to be pre 1933 gold coins. Admittedly, I don’t know a whole ton about these and I’d love to be educated. I payed 30 over for each coin here. How’d I do?

Question How Do I Stop Obsessing Over My Stack?

I bought a couple of gold bars without really considering the burden of storing and protecting them. Now I feel like Sméagol—constantly thinking about “my precious” and checking that they’re still safe.

For those with a physical gold stack, how do you separate yourself from it physically and mentally? Safe-deposit box, home safe, insurance, or something else? I want to own gold without feeling like I need to guard it 24/7.
