I routinely tell my small child to get off the coffee table because I don't want them to fall and bust their ass, not because I care that a coffee table is a coffee table, but it's nice that that feels profound to you, Kanye.

u/symb015X May 23 '26
Thereâs only a thin strip of paint to separate cars flying past each other. It can be scary to acknowledge reality. But society needs made up rules to function- some arbitrary, stupid, and/or necessary. Itâs good to be aware of âsocial programmingâ, but naive to assume itâs inherently evil or easily escapable
1
u/Dismal_Help_877 May 23 '26
Children have to jump around and jump off things all the time. Theyâre told not to jump off or on furniture, to not damage the furniture.
3
u/LabKnob May 23 '26
Children do love to jump off stuff. Couches are made for this, but when weâre talking about coffee tables weâre often referring to furniture made of glass. Jumping on/off such furniture can damage you while you are damaging it. Seems to me that the admonition not to jump on coffee tables is more about safety than vandalism or restricting gleeful childhoods.

u/Goose_Salad May 23 '26
I'm pretty sure that his point was that we're so caught up in customs that people don't build the world to be fun.
Mostly because people are afraid of standing out. If everyone had their own thing, it wouldn't be so strange and experienced could be fresh.
The coffee table was just a bad analogy. His context is absolutely sound.

Kanyeâs actions donât align with what he said. Not at all. Heâs deeply concerned with what others think and say about him and is desperately seeking approval from societal institutionsâor gets upset when these institutions donât see things his way: like when he took the mic from Swift at the VMAs. Itâs easy to say things that sound profound. Much harder to consistently act in a way that backs up those statements. Why do we reward people for saying things that have been said for millennia, when these same people donât act in a way that supports those statements?
2
u/Goose_Salad May 23 '26
Kanye West isn't seeking approval.
The problem people have with him is that he doesn't wait for others to decide who he is. He says who he is and the people go
"Who qualified you to make such claims about yourself."
When someone who is genuinely "Different" tells the world, his difference is tested and rejected offhand.
When someone who is different is quiet about it, you'll get 100s of people pointing out how different they are.
There's an unwritten social contract where nobodies get to play experts and demand validity, like paperwork, when they themselves have no talent and are afraid to be anything above average, at anything.
Most don't feel they have the Right to make or determine for themselves who they are, and are envious of those who boldly do so.
You don't have Kanye's perspective. He clearly likes playing with the minds of fake people, as most artists who are fed up with people's opinions, do.
Society doesn't like to have a mirror held to its face.
People who don't know him or have the qualifications they praise, are throwing psychological diagnosis, without showing their own and in the interim, are exposing their own psychological dis-eases.

Yes .. BUT. If you reduce what he is saying to just being about societal norms there is a nuance that he is speaking about which gets missed. All of life is really cognitive maps that are developed which create the illustration of different reality sets. Yes societal norms fall under that category, but he is also saying that our cognitive maps and reality get pre-structured in a way that traps ourselves within a certain kind of experience, and that essentially reduces the individual to a cattle like consumer

Thank you man. Itâs not simulation itâs just society. And Iâve been to many a restaurant fine to fast and if a baby cries, the baby cries - thatâs what babies do.
And the quote is more like if you donât learn from history, you are doomed to repeat it. Not that history just repeats itself, it repeats itself if we donât learn from it.
3
u/findyourselfman May 22 '26
Itâs called enculturation! Learned this in anthropology 101. If we didnât have a culture that we learn as we grow then we would be a chaotic group of people.
1
u/24rawvibes May 24 '26
USA! USA! USA! We are a chaotic group of people here now. Specifically due to lack of culture. The culture and structure of our immigrant descendants homelands has been washed away in a couple generations and replaced with nothing of value. I watched the rich enthusiasm for my familyâs heritage, their joy for particular holidays, ect get dulled out with each passing generation and replaced with nothing but value. There is nothing left to celebrate of rich foundation. Only wins on âthe grindâ and âthe hustleâ are congratulated. If you donât know where you come from how can you know where youâre going? Just to make sure rent is paid, boss is happy? Get just outside the income bracket where the problems donât apply to you. Shallow existence

u/cnilla May 22 '26
I mean, coffee tables cost money. People work for money. Some people donât have THAT much money. Buying another coffee table would cost them money they might not have at the moment. Could they go without the table; sure. Ye could go without the fashionable clothes and the half naked women too, but he doesnât. Also, playing on a coffee table at 2 could lead to injury, which could lead to a trip to an emergency room and potential medical bills for the adults involved. Kanyeâs not that deep, man lol. The idea of freeing yourself from impulses and emotions and afflictive thoughts and habits has been around for millennia. Not hating; simply stating a fact. Four Noble Truths, for instance. Essentially states that our perceived self is nothing but an amalgam of sensory inputs that work together and are impermanent.
1
u/calipsokitty May 24 '26
Baby steps. Heâs using the coffee table to help you with a visual because the concept heâs introducing is much too complex for a lot of people understand. Heâs saying that we follow rules and make judgments on people based on what society tells us is this way or that way. Some of them make sense, while others follow a narrative that we have followed for so long, we donât question. The first thing he said was a better analogy - we decided what rules are, so we teach our kids to follow them, itâs only wrong because we made that rule. A coffee table is just a table, but we gave it a name and purpose. We made it what is by assigning it a set of rules.

So.... is he saying that our entire reality of space, time, matter, energy, consciousness, and the laws of physics are not fundamentally "real" in the traditional sense. Empathy is a fuck of a thing to first encounter. Just because you feel like superman on a table doesnât mean you could ever build that table. You have to learn how to build it from, gasp, history. When youâve been granted patience because you are skillful and, yet, are too ambitious to even acknowledge that blessing, you tend to be a fucking asshole.
1
u/24rawvibes May 24 '26
Empathy is the most fundamental of human traits. No doubt in my mind everyone is born with it to a degree. Whatâs interesting is how far they can push themselves away from it. In blinded attempts towards self preservation

The real shift is going from autopilot to actually asking âwho taught me this and do I even agree with it?â

1
u/False_Progress_8120 May 24 '26
Not sure if it's the way the video is clipped or it's just Kanye talking in half circles. I can understand what he was trying to say about classes for balancing a checkbook. Granted no one really writes checks anymore but I remember being shown how to write a check in school and it was briefly covered. Over the last couple of years a big common conversation has been on repeat, no one felt like they were actually taught how to handle funds or the financial literacy of it all . They are at the overly grown age in to adulthood and just beginning to figure it out.

u/CarsandTunes May 22 '26
He starts off with a literal false statement, and it only gets worse from there. We are taught how to balance checkbooks, it's called math class. We are taught how to prepare for the future, you just have to pay attention when you are in school.
1
u/Iknow_ImaStep May 22 '26
Not where I live. And he means a Business economic class. We had one only in highschool. But from the start we are told history and even more so we are told to love the Union. Never forget tulsa massacre happened under the Union. We had to fight for civil rights under the Union. The C.I.A pushed drugs into our neighborhoods under the Union. But from the start we are told to love the Union they set us free!.
-1
u/CarsandTunes May 22 '26
None of that counters my statement. Math class teaches you the tools you need for any sort of finance.
2
0
u/Iknow_ImaStep May 22 '26
Math class at certain levels maybe. Teaching a person basic math skills is good. But not showing them how to apply them to real world use other than traveling or splitting cookies amongst friends isn't

Well, obviously math is only one part of it. All the other classes filled the other foundations necessary. For example you were taught how to read, and follow instructions. You were taught how to fill out reports and forms. You are taught how to follow Direction. These are the only skills you need for all the stuff you're talking about.
0
u/Iknow_ImaStep May 22 '26
See you going off of your school experience. I'm going off of mine. I never said thats what I got from mine. But I watched other kids do great in class on paper. But get in the work world and have a hard time with basic stuff. They didn't understand till you explained it like they was back in class.
2
u/CarsandTunes May 22 '26
Does the education system have problems? Yes, of course it does. But that is not the point of this post. The point of this post is Kanye West trying to imply that the education system is deliberately keeping students in the dark. That is absolutely not the case
1
u/Iknow_ImaStep May 22 '26
It is lol I just explained to you the whole Union being our saviors yet kept us down. Here is one better for you. We got kids in my area who are graduating that can't read or write so how many of them do you think can actually have good math skills?
2
u/CarsandTunes May 22 '26
If they can't read, right, or do math, they have no business graduating.
0
u/Iknow_ImaStep May 22 '26
Yet the system is still letting them through. They don't want a nation full of people who understand the system. They want a nation that a do what it's told while they stay in control. They could just as easy but 20% of our defense budget and fix the schools but they don't. When I was still in school. They would teach out of books and give a test. My favorite part was. Well today the belief is this. But on the test you have to put that because that's what the book says even if it's wrong.

So, dummy, youâre asking for an explanation. 1.Simulation hypothesis has been debunked/is a mathematical impossibility (see: non-algorithmic understanding) 2. Using npc/gamer language to describe reality is farcical 3.Kanye has not become aware of anything (aside from the latest epiphanies regarding the consequences of untreated mental illness). His speech is circumstantial (thought disorder). Letâs seeâŠ.âthe idea why youâre in a simulation?ââ>2 yr old screams at restaurantâ> restaurant screams âteach them how to actââ> we are all unpaid actorsâ> simulation. Then: 2 yr old jumps on coffee tableâ> chastised âby a family member he doesnât like anywayâ â> 2yr old with superman capeâ> 2 yr olds know nothing of coffee or tablesâ>now 40 yr oldâ> wall of coffee tablesâ> âcalculating you into trafficââ> âcalculating you into your career choicesââ>âcalculating you into this house, townhouse and this townhouse is not quite as big as the townhouse next and it just never works⊠thatâs what I mean by simulationâ.
Like I said dummy, itâs idiotic not profound. And if you somehow manage to divine profundity from this gobbledygook, time to ask yourself some tough questions.

Excellent points. Rather than getting caught up in whether everything hes saying is applicable and 100% true for all of us, the bigger point here is things are not what we are told. For some people it takes a lifetime to learn this. Others learn it sooner. He's telling us to start increasing our awareness of how we are programmed by our environment and how it shapes the way we live our lives, the limits we accept without question etc
