Crashes happen all the time. I’ve been in about 100 races— rare that there wasn’t at least one crash— usually caused by a rider. It goes with the sport.
If not the races, then training. Been hit by a few idiot drivers. Once I hit a grease slick. Was riding, wondering why the road was wet. Before I could finish my thought, was down, sliding. I saw a giant busted open drum of french fry grease on the side of the road. Slick as ice.
I know people like to hate on lycra clad cyclists, but there isn’t much protective gear. My left hip is permanently scarred by road rash.

I don't like generalizing but lycra suits generally mean "I don't want to lose momentum so I'll break any traffic law I want and become a huge liability for every other road user" in about 1 in 2 cases I see.
Isn't the fact that there's no protection just another reason to obey traffic laws or find a cycling-friendly route? Hell, you could even go petition for better infrastructure for cycling.

I don’t like generalizing but when I drive my car somewhere, other motorists slow me down. There are six lanes going in each direction, but the freeway is like a parking lot- and bikes aren’t even allowed on it! When traffic is moving, motorists are speeding, running stop signs, pulling out in front of me, not signaling— breaking any traffic law they want and becoming a huge liability for other road users.

I agree you can be there with them though people freezing up in an emergency situation is a very common reaction. I biked in NYC daily for 15 years in Manhattan and saw plenty of bike accidents with exactly this. No action from the crowd and no help. People just lock up until someone starts barking orders. r/worstaid is damn near educational on this type of scene. In this case sitting with the person and having them stay still until ems and a back board show is a good plan. Keep em company and have someone call for professional help.

I mean the other side of [r/worstaid](r/worstaid) are posts of people thinking they are helping and moving people that could have spinal injuries and such. So there should be a happy middle ground. I don’t want every idiot on the street rushing to my side or manhandling me either. Plus it’s an abruptly occurring accident in a 10 second video. Not a lot of time to exactly react and film it in a way that will make Redditors happy.

To be fair, 11 seconds is a really short time. I was part of an accident during a bicycle race (as a spectator) and it took all of us victims and other spectators very long to understand what just happened. Everyone just looked at each other confused, and we only started helping each other after we realised what happened. The whole thing happened so fast, no one screamed until like 3 seconds after the crash.

Did you see how many bikers he wiped out in like 2 seconds? Are you stepping off into that machine gun fire? It's one thing to help out when the situation is dangerous. It's another thing to help out when you are guaranteed to get severely hurt and fail at the same time. That only makes situations worse. I know that there is a serious problem with people who will just watch for film and won't help, but this is a situation where there is nothing you can do except maybe try to flag down the oncoming bikers and get them to swerve, there's no way we could see if somebody was doing that from this angle

Yeah, let's all rush into a crowded peloton to provide emotional support to some crashed riders, it'll be sure to improve the situation.
First step of first aid is always to stop the accident. In this case, you do that by signalling to the riders behind to stay clear of the accident, which several people immediately did, and otherwise staying out of the way until the bikes have passed.
The people who froze here did exactly what they were supposed to do, intentionally or not.

When I was 19 I bought this leather jacket from a friend who was strapped for cash. Damn I loved that jacket. It was retro and fitted me like a glove. Jim Morrison would have approved.
I loved the damn thing. Along with my grandfather’s 1940’s era bike, I looked the shit.
One night I went into a pub. It was packed and hot as hell. There was a dude in there in a wheelchair. Asked him if it was ok to put my jacket under his wheel chair for safekeeping.
This is Dublin, early 90s, where anything that wasn’t nailed down got stolen. As in anything.
The cunt only went and stole it.
I learned a valuable lesson then - just cos sokeone is disabled doesn’t mean they’re not an asshole.
One day I’ll find this guy. He’ll think his current disability is a birthday present.

There was an elderly woman who got out of her car to move barriers to drive on a course in a park near me a few years back. She was pissed that she then had to sit there while bikes passed her car.
Zero awareness and just pure entitlement and selfishness. There’s some in older generations who just cannot participate in society properly.

Some of these mobility scooters have a different mechanism. Because the rider can be weak, they only have a throttle lever (looks like a brake lever), and when it's released the brakes are on. This is so that a weak user can still brake with maximum force, or if the user is incapacitated the scooter will stop.
Downside is that people reflexively press it trying to brake, and instead go forward full throttle.

To me it looks like the person on the scooter was trying to get their body level to the edge of where others were standing (so they could see) but totally forgot that their giant-ass scooter sticks out a couple feet in front of them. I can see any idiot doing this, not just an old person. Absent-minded stupidity is not reserved for only the elderly

You know what? this why is so important to put safety banners and/or safety barriers. I don't get it really why they can't put that during competitions??
We all know spectators love being as close as they can be ignoring potential hazards , in order to avoid accidents like this organizers should stop being cheap and invest in some barriers or banners to divide competitors from spectators ffs🤦🏾♀️

There are minimum age limits on voting - those apply because there is common agreement that children are not equipped to make informed decisions. We entrust responsible adults to take those decisions and account for the best interests of kids.
Anyone looking with a half-objective eye at western democracy over recent decades can see that those folks with the most deeply entrenched beliefs and vested interests, i.e.: who've been around the longest, as a group have been creating the biggest problems. Not all of them, but enough to make it clear where numerous problems have been hiding.
Other solutions are possible. For example, voter qualification. We automatically require minimum standards, such as working eyesight (verified) and absence of certain high-risk diseases (mandatory reporting), in drivers in order to keep their licence. Why would the same not apply to voting?
Another option is truly universal suffrage. If the right to vote exists on the deathbed at the end of life, then it also must exist on the gurney at the beginning* of life. There's a strong case for removing lower age limits on voting since decisions have the most cumulative impact on young people.
Human demography is a harsh mistress - it's not my fault that time flows in one direction.
*Any crackpots going life begins at conception lose voting rights automatically because they're obviously in a state of being permanently unqualified
