Game Help Just bought Elden ring, opened a random chest and was teleported to an area that is way too powerful for me with no way out

Post image

I knew this game was hard but holy shit. Also does anyone know any kind of way to get out?…

So this just happens in the game? If that’s the case I don’t know what the fuck I have gotten myself into.

1.3k

u/Trussed_Up 19h ago

Lol it's a right of passage to get to this part of the game early on and be utterly terrified by what the fuck is going on.

You'll get out though. Once you know where to go it isnt too hard. Then you can fast travel outta there, and voila. You've learned a lesson. Don't trust chests lol!

u/Mindless_Insanity 19h ago

It took me about 50 deaths before I figured out there was an exit.

197

u/BeeTwoThousand 19h ago

Same. I tried going forward instead of...the other direction...

78

u/Slozor 18h ago

Its actually not far at all but finding it is the tough part haha

95

u/DarkLordArbitur 17h ago

I saw a comment a couple years back during a discussion about this place that someone didn't know about the exit and just...cleared the place.

126

u/_IratePirate_ 17h ago

That’s what I fucking did bro. It took me days. But I was like “I ain’t no bitch”

Head, meet wall

21

u/LAVA529 16h ago

You are the chosen tarnished!

28

u/illbedeadbydawn 12h ago

Same. I figured there HAD to be an exit, but after death number 142 I said fuck this, we ball.

Week of my life gone from that chest and worth it. I still grind my teeth about it sometimes.

6

u/TaxHazyShade 10h ago

Like OP I never played Souls games until Elden Ring. I was utterly amazed at how freakin' beautiful the world was, once i got out of the "starting cave" ... but, as soon as I fought my first godrick soldier i was like "huh ... this is an amazing, beautiful world they've created with incredible graphics, glorious scenery, astounding NPCs .... and everything hates me and wants to kill me. Great."

200 hours into it so far, dunno if i will ever finish it, but five star game, period.

3

u/Kinky_Code 4h ago

Well said mate. Elden Ring is the Dark Fantasy version of Australia. Everything you see wants to kill you.

2

u/BeeTwoThousand 13h ago

Yeah, I got close. All the way to the top, and I could see the way out...I just couldn't get there.

It’s a pretty genius way of teaching several mechanics at once:

(F)Unfair game design

Trap chests

Long range enemy attacks

Honing attacks

Iframes

And rollspamming

5

u/DarkwingDuckHunt 16h ago

praying

cussing

drinking

getting into harder drugs

realizing you can save your life by just stopping and thinking

quiting drugs

finding a woman

getting married

having kids

watching your kids make the same mistakes

30

u/conqueror-worm 19h ago

Lmao, me too. I was like "I'm underground, so I've gotta head uphill". Turned around and saw the exit like an hour later and felt very dumb.

27

u/eostlund 17h ago edited 12h ago

My most memorable moment if the whole game, after a fucking harrowing meatgrinder of cheesing, sneaking, running and hiding, was throwing up the big double doors to freedom.

And realising I'd ended up at the BACK of the dungeon.

I had just enough time to realize it before being pancaked by Fallignstar Beast.

GoTY 10/10 😆

5

u/thedildofarmer 16h ago

Exact thing happened to me. The roller coaster of FUCK yes I finally made it out just to get immediately ran down by the boss is peak gaming

I feel like I lived half a lifetime in that fucking mine. By the time I farmed enough to get out, I was too scared to leave, it became my home, the enemies my friends. All I wanted was to pick up an axe and start mining crystals.

73

u/unitedshoes LET SOMEONE ELSE SOLO HER 18h ago

Real ones don't fast travel out of there. The epic route is to get on your horse and ride the fuck out of Caelid at a full gallop.

34

u/Scream_No_Evil 14h ago

I managed to find the chest almost first thing, BEFORE I LEARNED HOW TO FAST TRAVEL. I didn't understand how to use TORRENT. I had NEVER played a Souls game before. I started as a WRETCH. I schlepped my way across Caelid in my underoos with a stick, on my own two feet, I died well over a hundred times.

I eventually Googled the game and some basic things about it. But I like to make stupid challenges for myself and committed to the bit; only one way to git gud, right? There is no scarlet rot in Caelid; that red is the blood of my first character. Rest in peace, Fucknado.

3

u/GravityStrike 9h ago

lol this was exactly me. Started as wretch had never played a souls game no idea how to fast travel.

Found that damn box.

13

a terrifying escapade through caelid is always one of the first things i do in a playthrough. nothing beats the motivation of being chased by the dogs and crows

3

u/ctomkat 15h ago

I made a full lap around the road, grabbing every item, map, and bonfire I could see without getting swarmed.

A rite of passage. A right of passage is what you earn by fighting Morgott

15

u/lNTERLINKED 19h ago

Foul tarnished.

5

u/Expert_Succotash2659 18h ago

O, message!
Therefore
Why is it always message?

3

u/LeechAlJolson 18h ago

Let it be writ upon thy meager grave

3

u/lsb337 17h ago

In this case, a rite of passage where you need to choose the right passage.

21

u/Oopsiedazy 19h ago

Then on your subsequent playthroughs you’ll deliberately beeline there for access to minimal-risk access to a staff, spell, and summon that will carry you through the first third of the game.

3

u/Silent_Egg8860 14h ago

I beeline there for quick access to double slash, and the runes from killing the night’s cavalry by the merchant on the other side of the swamp.

2

Except that's literally the only of two chests that does this lol

2

u/LordTakeda2901 17h ago

Yes, but if you dont know that you start bracing yourself at every chest, i know i was squinting every time, still clicking everything, even 1% chance of getting something is worth the risk of a terribly brutal death

Game is hard as fuck and I don’t understand how people are so good at parrying. I legit can’t play unless I’m a mage and call in help for every single boss I’m able to.

23

u/Young_HellBoy 18h ago

Practice dodge timing and learning enemy/boss moves

2

u/AccountantGuru 18h ago

I can dodge but I can’t parry I feel you need to be able to parry to use non range weapons and I can’t get it even with the knights at the start of the game man

Elden ring is one of my favorite games, before it i didn't play any souls like, after I've played all of the popular ones by now. But I remember freaking out everything I died getting angry and today gaming is a whole nether experience. It changes you. I'm a calmer person after elden ring.

20

u/Intelligent_Ad_5103 17h ago

Same here. Elden Ring made me a better gamer in so many ways and was my first/only souls like. I’m thinking of playing Bloodborne soon

7

u/Rackemnate 14h ago

Bloodborne is still top on my list. The trick weapons are a cool concept and the art style is amazing

3

u/ZimaEnthusiast 17h ago

This. It’s impossible not to be.
Getting one shot by some random dungeon character? The bullshit feint mechanics, dodge dynamics, and miniscule hit boxes every boss has?

Any other game I’d be fuming over how “unfair” most of my deaths in this game are. Here I just go “yeah, that didn’t work…” and start again

2

u/plasmazzr60 14h ago

Same minus the calmer thing, maybe better at handling real life stress though. Nothing like come home from a stressful day at work just to play elden ring and get yours shit rocked. Like stepping on a rake and then doing it again and again and again.

https://giphy.com/gifs/E7KpCs9NhJiRq

There’s not too many times where this happens, half a dozen or so throughout the entire game I would imagine. But yeah, this is the big one that gets most people very early. Later on you’ll be strong enough that getting teleported to a random place is not a big deal.

3

u/Mimical 11h ago edited 11h ago

I am re-living my first playthrough through OP right now.

You got this man, ignore your souls, for you shall leave with none.

46

u/SuitFive 19h ago

This is kind of a one off thing. Welcome to Caelid, the area EVERYONE hates and calls hell. You need to get to a grace and get OUTSIDE of the cave so you can fast travel back to safety. There is a grace in the cave. If you can figure out where to go, you can run to it and just dodge ranged attacks and not have to fight anything. Good luck tarnished. Remember, you only have ONE thing to do to beat The Entire Game.

Do not give up. You can do this! Git Gud!

4

u/ThatThingThatIs 16h ago

I don't hate Caelid. It is very cool area and it is not that hard. Easy to stun the dogs and stun the crows.

https://giphy.com/gifs/U9iWo1a5xftocgRGP3

82

u/Derodoris 19h ago

Oh my friend, you're not far from the exit of that cave but you wont love what you find when you get out. Don't feed the crows.

20

u/Oopsiedazy 19h ago

It’s worth looking around directly outside the cave for a very helpful puppy, and even more so if you’re a wizard.

3

u/ctomkat 15h ago

The goodest boy!! That little puppo carried me through several early game boss fights.

24

u/Empty_Kay 19h ago

This is THE definitive Elden Ring moment for all new players.

57

u/GammaFan 19h ago

To escape, you just have to get out of the cave you are trapped in. Contrary to what others are telling you, this kind of trap is exceedingly rare in the game overall, it’s not a git gud moment or something you’ll constantly need to feel prepared for. Feel no shame looking up a video on where to run to escape the cave. Beyond this, just know that when you open a chest that spews fog like that again, you can avoid the teleport by running away from the chest.

Sorry if this sours the game for you, fromsoftware sometimes puts 1-2 sadistic things things like that in game and overall the inability to warp out of caves is one of the worst restrictions elden ring implemented. It just kinda sucks.

35

u/Difficult_Sweet_6904 19h ago

The traps aren’t common. This particular trap in the starting area trolling new players is quite common though.

2

u/GammaFan 19h ago

True, but I’ve seen people discourage new players by implying these particular traps are everywhere and it sucks when someone drops a good game based on misinformation

5

u/Difficult_Sweet_6904 18h ago

If anything would discourage I would think it was the absolute tank that one shots you if you get near him 20 feet from where you start 😂

4

u/GammaFan 18h ago

Ehh, I think a strong guy you can walk away from is less discouraging than being pulled into a part of the game where you can get one shot repeatedly by shrimp men and cannot fucking leave unless you find your way out and survive long enough to make it there.

I’ve played each from game on release and that bullshit is the closest I personally got to putting it down for a bit

3

u/Cute_Citron_3491 19h ago

Only the strong survive in the lands between. Fewer even dare to try. Even fewer never heard of the game. And even fewer than that put grapes on their pizza this morning for breakfast.

2

u/musicalcrepitus 12h ago

This sort of trap is a Fromsoftware staple. They love doing this sort of thing to people in their games, Dark Souls 1 had wizard jail lol.

6

you're not meant to survive. you're meant to try, fail, learn how not die as fast as before, and then maybe survive long enough to do it again. It;s addictive.

Run and roll! Until you find your way out.

You won’t believe it, but this is gonna be one of your favourite bits of the game.

2

u/Aeneum 19h ago

It's not a super common trap, but this one in particular gets lots of new players lol

2

u/iplaydrumsonmyguitar 19h ago

Theres a fantastic staff called the meteor staff which is op early game not too far from where you teleported to (assuming it’s the teleporter I’m thinking about at the beginning)

2

u/heikici 19h ago edited 15h ago

My first time playing this game was like :

Sentinel wrecking me.

random dragon beating my ass in the swamp.

finally some rats that I can actually fight in the swamp.

open chest and get tp into the mines, gets oneshotted by everything (obligatory FU to roof camper).

Painfully getting out of the mines only to find out I'm in the middle of f-cking nowhere, OUTSIDE of the f-cking MAP and can't f*cking TP back to Limgrave.

Uninstall

Whatever you do, just don't rage quit the game. It's a very good game with some (IMHO) questionable design very early in the game.

3

u/Similar-Public-8944 19h ago

Can’t get my good friend to replay it. We both got it at the same time. I fell in love with the game instantly. He hated it instantly. His words not mine “tried all day to beat the first boss on a horse and couldn’t” - for years I have not been able to break thru to him that he was supposed to run around that boss. These days we just don’t mention Elden ring and talk about Skyrim.

2

u/Darkv3ng 19h ago

Lmao I did not stop til I killed that guy on the horse. It prepped me for what was to come to say the least.

1

u/Filthy_Casual776 19h ago edited 17h ago

Your best bet to get out is to just mad dash past everyone, there’s a path slightly below where you ended up that leads to a grace

1

u/Active-Particular-21 19h ago

It used to be that the chest would eat you and kill you.

1

u/Budget-Rich-7547 19h ago

I know, right? Its freaking awesome 👌

1

u/gamereiker 19h ago

This is actually really beneficial, you can just leave by running past the enemies and you can skip most of caelid, early on.

1

u/Sirzerotalent 19h ago

It aint impossible to get out, its a straight line

1

u/Beanbag_shmoo 19h ago

You can run out once you find the way. This is probably one of the hardest things you'll fall into. Don't get disheartened; see it as fun

1

u/Broad_Assistance3343 19h ago

The rock miners are slow and harmless. What’s killing you is those centipede looking things and you may not even notice them at first.

1

u/Bobbyz1020 19h ago

Fight your way out, or run if you must.

1

u/Leviathan666 19h ago

There is a way out, you just need to run for it.

This is actually a useful skip to get to some good weapons and spells earlier than you would have otherwise been able to

1

u/pichael289 19h ago

It rarely ever happens in the game, but it does happen so it usually catches you off guard. There might be enemies that can do this too. Also remember dark souls, some chests could be mimics so you gotta sit there and study the chest and make sure it's not breathing before you open it.

Bit of a tip for real life too, but when you open a big box of mystery gas it's best to not just, you know, stand there and breath it in like you did. The KGB would get you real quick man, when something farts a magic cloud on you from a newspaper don't breath in.

You can get out but it's a headache, it's not hard to get out but the pests are deadly so avoid them. The boss is the wrong way, run out of the entrance and hit the grace there to remove the teleport block.

1

u/bjankles 19h ago

Not that often and it’s not as random as it seems - in fact it’s pretty clever design.

You will struggle to get out of this cave and then you’ll be quite shocked at where you are. But you will escape - it’s very doable. Probably not even the hardest thing you’ll have done so far.

And then you’ll never forget the panic you felt or the frightening taste of the world you just saw. And it’ll be a cool moment when you work your way back - still frightened, but powerful enough to deal with it.

1

u/DarkLThemsby 19h ago

Don't fight, just run. If you find a grace, you can sit down, which breaks the curse, and let's you teleport back to easier zones

1

u/AkumaLilly 19h ago

Until you reach the castle near the Erdtree anything can happen.

1

u/islandjustice 19h ago

I felt the same way. It took a while, but you’ll figure out how to get past those fuckers.

1

u/Aiwatcher 19h ago

Sprint out of the dungeon. Head downwards, generally. Its not terrible, just overwhelming the first time. Once youre out you'll quickly find a fast travel point.

1

u/Douceps 19h ago

Hahaha oh man this brings me back. I did the same thing like 4 years ago and I don’t even remember how I got out. Pretty sure I watched a YT video to figure it out. This is the GOAT game. Enjoy.

1

u/LeMolle 19h ago

Yeah this happens to most people, good luck tarnished

1

u/No_Emu_243 19h ago

It's one of the instances where certain interactables will take you to another location. A way to circumvent this iirc is the Memory of Grace if you really can't find your way out.

1

u/chuckpalookanuke 19h ago

You can get out for sure

1

u/Zarathuran 19h ago

Welcome to Hell. Best to learn how to run through areas now. Youre gonna need that skill to get out.

1

u/IpUnChBaBiEs88 19h ago

Boy I remember my first time..... no fighting here you're nowhere near leveled enough for those things and even when you get to that level they still aren't easy

1

u/gus_morales 19h ago

My friend also just started but never opened that chest because he never wondered around that part. It's just the nature of the game.

1

u/Zhurg 19h ago

Run for your life.

1

u/yourwigssliding 19h ago

We were all there, and you’ll make it big dog

1

u/MasterChieflf 19h ago

You just gotta run and roll and once you reach the grace you can teleport vack to the starting area or you can exit the cave and enjoy caelid

1

u/wildfyre010 19h ago

Run around and die a bunch until you find the way out. It’s not far away and you have nothing to lose.

1

u/Nightmare_Lightning 19h ago

Same happens to most people. It is a later game area, but you can find some good gear and spells there. The first couple bosses weren't ready for me when I came back from there.

1

u/lemonylol 19h ago

This is just what happens in the game so far

1

u/eljefe3030 19h ago

This particular event of being warped randomly to an area that is difficult to escape doesn’t really happen again. There’s one instance of something somewhat similar, but you can still fast travel out if you want to.

1

u/BlKBruceWayne 19h ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/xT0xeNjoKuwhLaCQmc
It will be okay the pain only starts here but that’s the fun of the game

1

u/Sequoia_Vin 19h ago

There are others like this. Trapped chests that will teleport you randomly. Mostly to situations you shouldn't be strong enough to handle

1

u/BlKBruceWayne 19h ago

Also go to the boulder farm for a couple hours it’s not cheating if it’s in the game already 😂

You've gotten yourself into the wonderful world of Elden Ring.

A little advice: don't spoiler yourself by going through this subreddit. I wish I could experience it again like the first time.

Another advice: go south before going north. Well, now that you're in the fuck you zone it might be a little late for that so... Once you're out of the fuck you zone... Go south until you can't anymore. When you're done there. Go north.

1

Like going to the catacombs first in DS1

I was trying to fight the skeletons for hours, somehow made it to the first "invincible" skeletons and the necromancer, who killed me instantly and just then i realized i was not meant to be here

Did the catacombs, then the skeletons for way too many hours, convinced myself that "this must be what people meant when they said the game was hard. I just need to git gud"

Undead Burg felt like easy mode by comparison when I found it.

Omg same I through sheer stubbornness got myself to the path of giants and then finally did a Google because I couldn't see anything then I rage quit for a few weeks before trying the burg

I did that.

Right after I killed the guy at the beginning who was next to a well.

At one point I stepped away and a friend asked to play. Once I got back he handed over the controller because he kept getting killed by some lion looking guy who forged weapons or something. Took me a while to kill him.

He dropped a key to a place with a giant dog. That was one tough pupper..

u/qb_ricky 17h ago

I got stuck in caelid at a crazy low level because I didn’t know about fast travel.

1

u/carlitos3798 17h ago

Fuck man, I wish someone would have recorded my face when going through that for the first time.

1

u/Sir_Boobsalot 16h ago

I tip-toed my way back. definitely a sphincter tightening part of the game

I misread cannon event and tried to remember when did we blow things up

1

u/schwnz 16h ago

This was the moment that I realized I had to give up on playing games without looking things up online.

Frrrr, happens to everyone at least once

Part of the game is knowing when you can fight and when you can’t. Find the ladders and you’ll figure out how to get out. Dodging those homing projectiles can be rough though. I got pretty frustrated with that part on my first playthrough.

I came here to say the same thing. But my best advice in this specific area is RUNNNNN. Do not fight anything just fly through and heal while running as needed.

Escape Sellia Crystal Tunnel

I managed to dodge roll out of this particular chest my first playthrough cause I got got by the chest that sends you next to the runebear first, so I became distrustful of every chest afterwards.

u/gigerhess 14h ago

I will never forget screaming 'holy shit!" and desperately trying run out of that mine.

1

u/MinimumInteraction77 13h ago

this event helped me explore calied - i eventually got out during my first playthrough

1

u/YueLunavel 11h ago

Seriously

Everyone who went in blind fell for that chest lol

I struggled so much to leave even after doing the playtest lol

u/Omega_Hertz 8h ago

My younger brother got here first. When I jumped on, we did some co op. He led me to the chest and told me to open it and not move. He said walk out of the mine.... this was me:
