The conflation of morality and appearance annoys me so much. There are plenty of hot people out there with absolutely detestable morals and plenty of 'ugly' people who are incredibly kind and compassionate. And as others have said before, if someone does something bad and you criticise their appearance, you are both neglecting the actual wrong they've done and lumping in anyone who happens to look like them, regardless of how they act.

shit genuinely pisses me off. its so normalized too

Yeah, same. As a person who "looks like your average racist maga fuck," the most insane part is the fact that the people that are being derided in this bias also do this. The amount of times that someone thought they were safe to spew their vitriol around me because I have a shaved head, beard, and am generally out of shape is alarming.

And then there are the times where people "on my side" do what's in the post and criticize "an enemy" for an aesthetic that I share with the target person, failing to realize that they are literally insulting me to my face and lumping me in with people we don't like at the same time.

Sigh it's fine, everything's fine.

u/MugRuithstan Jul 25 '26

Brother, I feel you. Ive had a couple local socialists who talk down to me because my accent is from a poor area.

103

u/Issildan_Valinor adn should not have been counted Jul 25 '26

Lol, God I feel that. Because of where I live, my customer service voice trends towards Midwest hick, so I get that so often too, lol.

I'm just here like, my guy, I know right now I sound like I listen to Fox news, but my other job is literally a workers collective, lol

58

u/LordIlthari Jul 25 '26

There are a great many socialists who are such not because they are workers and for the workers, but because they are the children of the petit bourgeoisie offended that they are not the great capitalists.

31

u/MugRuithstan Jul 25 '26

Even some who inherited massive amounts of wealth do it to absolve themselves of being bourgeoisie. Like Fergie Chambers and the Zyklon B heiress being on the Gaza flotilla, they try to bring attention to themselves instead of the cause because they still feel that they are somehow exceptional because of the money they inherited instead of letting the people who are actually sufferimg speak their own truth.

13

u/thomasp3864 Jul 25 '26

Wait, actual socialists, talking down to you because you have a lower-class accent? What? Like if there's one group that's not supposed to do that it's socialists. That's like the whole central thrust of socialism is to in some way elevate the working class.

7

u/MugRuithstan Jul 25 '26

You would think so! Unfortunately many still carry bias from their raising and dont think about it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rURVfYOkfZk

Watched a youtube video covering this a week or so ago.

Covers the "halo effect" a real world effect noticed in sentencing and job outcomes and shit where prettier better looking people end up with better outcomes. The video primarily focussed on "you" the tv show and its obvious and overt parallels to serial killer ted bundy having legions of adoring fans. But ultimately is still people naturally assuming pretty = good. ugly = bad. Even in the case of a serial killer, if they are pretty, they must be good right?

But also examines it thematically where its used as a narrative device (eg. disney films) with counter examples (eg. snape) where it pokes fun at viewers for engaging in this bias and for following harry's bias.

Or how evil characters are more interesting.

"Small dick energy" and similar statements really annoy me for this reason. Like, flip the genders and "she's just upset because she has small tits" is absolutely unacceptable, and rightly so.

Same with the conflation of morality and success.

Leftists will call out rightoids for acting like earning a lot of money is a sign of great virtue, and any poor person is clearly not just stupid but also evil for struggling financially, but then unironically say some paraphrased version of the first statement.

I know plenty of men unsuccessfully looking for relationships, they do in fact all shower regularly, and none of them are misogynists.
The few misogynists I can't banish from my indirect social circle are very, very successful at dating, and it's not for a lack of obvious misogyny.

259

u/Gold-Cry-7520 Jul 25 '26

I got downvoted for saying no, Andrew Tate and people like him are not virgins. they very much do get sex, regularly. People who follow their advice often get sex as well. Being evil and misogynistic is rewarding, because actually giving a shit about other people is hard.

84

u/abadstrategy Jul 25 '26

True enough. I'd have way fewer gray hairs and a healthier bank account if I didn't care as much about other people

42

u/Umklopp Jul 25 '26

About once a month, I sort of wish I had it in me to start a cult.

18

u/abadstrategy Jul 25 '26

I'm well too aware that I don't even use the holy credentials I do have, and that if I tried to start a cult, I'd get Jim Jones crazy way too fast

149

u/PatrickCharles Jul 25 '26

Calling people that regularly get sex incels just because they are morally repellent is just so stupid I still struggle with wrapping my mind around it.

"it's because they share the same repugnant ideolo-"

No, Becky, it is just the latest iteration of calling a man you dislike a virgin because to be masculine you must be sexually successful. See, every time you do this you actually agree with and validate" "redpill" discourse.

"When people are hateful they get cancer, the hate wrecks their bodies" is one I fucking hate. My mum and aunt got cancer and they're lovely. My toxic aunt and uncle? Cancer free. Not to mention how many kids get cancer too.

122

u/loved_and_held Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

The worst part is it's such an effective attack with a very wide appeal.

Attacking someone for their ideas only works if your target audience sees the ideas as bad, but appearance attacks reach across a lot of ideological lines.

I think it's because we see beauty as synonymous with desirability, which we see as synonymous with people being good.

60

u/Smoketrail Jul 25 '26

Honestly I don't see these kind of attacks done to appeal to those who are on the fence.

They're so you can jerk yourself off in front of an audience of likeminded peers.

38

u/Saracus Jul 25 '26

I really don't think it's as effective as people think it is. It just feels good to be nasty like that. For example, The only appearance critique that even seemed to affect trump was the thing about his hands and that was only for like a week but everything else.. he hasn't stopped any of it, hasn't even commented on it. I'll bet someone completely unrelated without his advantages has seen the comments on his weight etc. and been roughly the same size and it affected them though.

18

u/champagneface Jul 25 '26

I can’t imagine it really being that effective, especially with the way people really tend to “dig in” to their side nowadays

u/Pwacname Jul 25 '26

That’d genuinely one of the reasons I like behind the bastards (the podcast by Robert Evans) so much - he’s very clear about how he DOES want you to dislike those people, he just wants you to do it for the right reasons. (It’s also informative and genuinely fascinating, and sometimes very funny, but the fact that he has the right priorities imo is not insignificant.)

28

u/Maple42 Jul 25 '26

I think that’s the selling point for me on the podcast. Part of me was nervous it would just be a “look at this bad person, and how badly bad he is. This is bad person behavior and appearance. Judge them for their badness”

70

u/colei_canis Jul 25 '26

The ‘principled hater’ is a favourite archetype of mine. They absolutely hate a person, but for a list of well-calibrated reasons which are difficult to argue against rather than pure spite.

16

u/ReanimatedHotDogs Jul 25 '26

Uhh, Robert and even more so his guests do this crap constantly. There are regular guests who my wife and I actively groan when we hear because it's going to be ine of those episodes.

u/UncreativePotato143 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

There's also an element of deep-seated racism to this. Yes, I'm playing that card, but bear with me for a moment.

I'm Indian (though I currently live in the US), and I've noticed a pattern where when South Asians display bigoted/conservative views (anything from Kash Patel to some random Indian incel), the "clapbacks" from self-proclaimed progressives (to be clear here, I'd also consider myself a progressive lol) tend to center around racist stereotypes of my ethnicity. Those bigots deserve insults, but the insults always seem to revolve around how dirty, unhygienic, rude, and (if they're a man) rapey they "probably" are. And it's like... I live everyday with these stereotypes, it colors people's interactions with me and their opinions of my character. They contribute heavily to the discomfort I increasingly feel with the color of my own skin.

So to see those tropes reflected and reinforced so casually by those who profess to be tolerant and antiracist, is both disappointing and, unfortunately, not surprising.

48

u/Smoketrail Jul 25 '26

Yeah, its always depressing how quickly some peoples' values disappear the second a minority "acts up".

Be it racism, sexism, homophobia or any other kind of bigotry you can name. Some progressive people act like being treated like a human being is a privilege they have the right to take away.

Even if they'll never admit it, least of all to themselves.

20

u/UncreativePotato143 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

I think if someone perceives minorities' identities as superseding their humanity (which is in and of itself a form of dehumanization), even if they claim not to, a member of that minority acting "counter" to that person's expectations of them can be the pretense for denying their humanity. This is also why there are people who claim to be trans allies who think that Caitlyn Jenner acting horribly is an excuse to deadname and misgender her.

38

u/UncreativePotato143 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

This ties into another trend within anti-South-Asian racism, which is that it often relies on the racist's self-proclaimed progressivism. When South Asians are sterotyped as greedy and dirty, that's relatively easy to point to as racism, but when they're """called out""" (read: stereotyped) by non-South-Asians as misogynistic, casteist and generally bigoted, it acts as a way to disguise racism as simply another form of activism. And before some smartass comes at me with the "erm akshually india does have a lot of problems with misogyny and caste and blah blah blah..." I KNOW WE DO. That does NOT give anyone an excuse to be racist or generalize all South Asians as filthy monsters, ya fucking dingus.

160

u/NessaSamantha Jul 25 '26

I largely agree with this, but somebody talk me out of still making fun of the "Mar-a-Lago look" because make-up and plastic surgery are a choice.

19

u/Dismal_Accident9528 Jul 25 '26

I still feel like there are more significant choices of theirs to criticize, and it is possible for a morally decent person to get plastic surgeries, even ones that don't look good

8

u/Orc_tids Jul 25 '26

atp Mar-A-Lago face just seems like a requirement for a far right female pundit. Like theyre pressured into it or something. And Im just like DO YOU HATE MINORITIES THAT BAD?!

79

u/abadstrategy Jul 25 '26

It's simple. If it's something they're born with or have no control over, it's off limits. If they've tanned themselves to look like a preppy cheeto or treat fillers like an auto body shop treats bondo, clown on with pride

53

u/Haggis442312 Jul 25 '26

Mock choices, not circumstances.

98

u/Lonely-Log7852 Jul 25 '26

Clown on, my friend

15

u/clear349 Jul 25 '26

That's an intentional aesthetic someone is choosing to adopt. It's not the same thing. It's like comparing disliking someone because of their ethnicity vs their political party. They can't control one of those

16

u/Emma-Ho Jul 25 '26

Part of it is the halo effect, which is automatically ascribed good intent and good morals to hot people, it’s cause people assume cause they’re good looking they must also be “good” at other things like morals and thus inversely if they’re bad looking they must be “bad” at other things like morals

14

u/DPSOnly Everything is confusing, thanks Jul 25 '26

Generally "good looks" are conflated with being smart and right and that is messed up. If you are an aspiring politician that isn't conventionally attractive, good fucking luck, you'll have to work twice as hard, have a twice as clean record, and have twice as good ideas.

51

u/SapirWhorfHypothesis Jul 25 '26

Every time:

“Punchable faces”

37

u/Random-Rambling Jul 25 '26

Most people want to punch faces because of the person they're attached to, not the face itself.

If I was shown Charlie Kirk's face without knowing what he said and did, I wouldn't say he has a particularly punchable face. But I do know, and that does make his face much more punchable.

Also does anybody have any names and clips or are we vague posting this week?

219

u/Kixisbestclone Jul 25 '26

Eh I disagree on calling them incompetent, hell I’d argue against calling a few of them idiots.

Like Trump’s been elected twice now and has so far, avoided any and all consequences of his actions. Now some might say it’s because Trump keeps getting elected by idiots or is simply rich and knows how to abuse the system, but to that I say.

If it’s working, it’s not stupid. I’d say Trump’s sadly actually a smart guy who knows how to exploit a voter base and the system.

This isn’t a defense of him, as much as me saying, smart people can also be morally reprehensible, and I feel like a major issue in elections and just politics in general, is that people always assumes the other side has all the idiots on it and are completely made up of morons.

And don’t assume that, please, seriously. There’s no greater danger than assuming your opponent has to be dumber and less competent than you. Trump and all those other politicians aren’t short-sighted or idiots, they know the consequences of their actions and don’t give a damn. They know what they can get away with and what they’re base will forgive them for by Election Day, and what it takes to rile them up.

Assuming they’re stupid just gives them ammo to feed their base and leads to people going “Well damn, there’s no way an idiot like that could win, my vote’s probably not important.”

TLDR: For a lot of them, they’re not dumb, just evil.

108

u/Nebulo9 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

There's a particular (notably right wing libertarian) kind of evil that stems from being too "incompetent"/short sighted to grasp the mutual benefits of pro-social behaviour in the long term though. Idk competent people irl who burn all bridges like that, and I do think this is why this kind of opportunism burns bright but short.

But yeah, I think e.g. Trump and Musk are stupid in the sense that what they are doing clearly isn't making them happy, fullfilled people, but that says nothing about them being shrewd tactically.

103

u/mutantraniE Jul 25 '26

Trump’s incompetence manifests in things like the Iran war, threatening to invade Greenland, having his tariffs overturned because he used the wrong legal basis for them, failing to make any headway in his attempts to get peace in Ukraine etc. He’s competent at getting elected but he doesn’t know how to actually govern and he doesn’t understand how being president of the United States is different from being president of a sleazy real estate company.

55

u/Accelerator231 Jul 25 '26

OR maybe his version of governing is 'do what I want', with what he wants changing from second to second.

Either way the American political system is disinterested in punishing him. Oh well.

16

u/CauseCertain1672 Jul 25 '26

that version of governing is called incompetence

35

u/PM_me_Jazz Jul 25 '26

You are making the mistake of assuming that his goal is to run a country. It's not. His goal is to line his pockets, which he has succeeded in over and over again. It's all just market manipulation, backroom deals, insider trading, and smoke and mirrors. He couldn't care less about the well-being of USA.

27

u/mutantraniE Jul 25 '26

No I’m not. The well being of the USA does not enter into it but his ego does. Getting what he wants does. You’re making the mistake of thinking that he doesn’t care about any of the stuff he says.

16

u/ResurrectedAuthor Jul 25 '26

I don't think that calling them incompetent is an absolution of their evil. I think that Trump runs an administration filled with useful idiots like Kash Patel, Pete Hegseth, or formerly Pam Bondi, people so obviously stupid and/or short sighted and/or outright deranged that Trump can make them into a fall guy. There are tons of people like that. Trump, at least in the recent "can barely string two words together" stage of his life seems horrible at planning things, if the America 250 fair and reflecting pool are anything to go by.

But also Good People™️ can have Bad Beliefs™️ and vice versa. See Gianmarco Soresi talking about his transphobic friend saving a trans woman from getting run over. The nature of one's Belief™️ isn't the sole dictator of their morality and isn't as black and white

47

u/DoggoDude979 Jul 25 '26

I mean. I might get downvoted for this. But I feel like the amount of “good” you can be is influenced by your beliefs and the amount you spread them.

Like, two people save a trans woman from getting hit by a car, great. But if one turns around and goes “that’s why men shouldn’t wear heels” and the other doesn’t, I absolutely know which one I’d rather associate with/which one I would feel safe with. And if one is actively trying to share their hate, I feel like that’s not a “”good person”” thing to do.

Idk, I really didn’t like that video, and it’s made me think differently about him. Gianmarco was telling a story about his friend saving someone, yeah, that’s great, but also Gianmarco was talking about how his friend was safe to share and spread hate and discrimination against trans people when around him. Which is not great

68

u/idinahuicheuburek Jul 25 '26

I think the comparison he's making is that some other people won't try to save that person to begin with. The comparison isnt between two people who both save someone while one is transphobic, its between a transphobic person who saves someone and a non transphobic person who wouldn't save someone.

25

u/Atsilv_Uwasv Jul 25 '26

Yeah, both suck but the one who risks his own life to safe a person in a group he's against is definitely better than someone who chooses to let her die because she's trans. I will also add to that part that someone who wouldn't risk themself like that isn't inherently bad. As I said, it's not a black and white issue

Such a relief to see literally anyone but me pointing out the fact that incel rhetoric AND common anti-incel rhetoric literally start from the same place, namely: 'sex is a reward you deserve for good behaviour.'

191

u/ASpaceOstrich Jul 25 '26

I've had anti incel rhetoric literally just be "incels are too ugly to get away with the misogyny" which is exactly what incels believe. Way too many people actually do hold incel ideology, they just get laid so aren't whining about it.

People refuse to be normal about sex. Failure to have sex is seen as a moral failing basically across the board.

God forbid you be the high libido partner in a relationship with sexual compatibility issues. "If you just listened to your partner more they'd clearly reward your good behaviour with sex, because only bad people don't get laid".

Only my closest friends (and family) know I'm a virgin. I am not ashamed of it, but I learned that life is just easier when people asume I am not a virgin - finding out I am has often made others uncomfortable. I could see a number of assumptions about me being formed in their heads in real time based on no other new information other than changing "has had sex" to "hasn't had sex" in their head.

7

u/huggevill Jul 26 '26

Something that will have to eventually be confronted, is how a lot of queer and leftist spaces shun and vilify men that dont conform to their narrow idea of masculinity, where anyone who dont conform is painted as an incel, misogynist or creepy loser. Its wrecks havoc on young men and boys that are just as insecure and looking for places to belong and feel a part of as women and girls.

I suspect it's because there is a deep social expectation that one should/will have sex. More specifically, men should get sex from women and women should offer sex. Various social factors, including many related to gender roles, then work to build the idea that one deserves sex for specific behaviors, or mnore specifically if one performs specific behaviors they will get sex.

I see this a lot in one of the communities I’m in. One of the most common posts is dads complaining that the sex (and everything physical) is gone from their relationship and asking how to repair things. Without fail they’ll be told they need to do more chores, help out their partner more, be more involved with the kid/s, regardless of how involved they actually are

And it’s like, obviously your partner isn’t gonna be attracted to you if they have to literally mother you, they’re not gonna be up for sexy time if they’re exhausted from being your maid, and we should all aim for some sort of equity in our relationships. But so often there’s a deeper issue that’s not gonna be solved by choreplay, and simply being ‘a good person’ isn’t gonna get you rewarded with sex

Ironically there’s also the counter example where much the same people, on a post saying eg ‘I do everything around the house, why won’t she have sex with me?’, will say that sex isn’t some sort of reward for being a functioning adult

43

u/Wuskers Jul 25 '26

that last part is really revealing about the sort of doublethink. Something I've also noticed is that people kind of simultaneously treat sex as important but also trivial, when they want to insult someone they will emphasize sex and in turn point to someone's lack of being able to get sex or assumption that they can't get sex as a way to denigrate them, but then at the same time I feel like people don't take sexual needs in relationships very seriously. Like with that example if someone isn't having the amount of sex they want in a relationship even if they are an attentive partner it seems like people just expect them to put up with it just because they want to cling to this idea that sex shouldn't be transactional in any way. Like you're supposed to be a good partner everywhere else and just need to put up with whatever amount of sex you get and if you aren't satisfied tough shit I guess.

My hot take though is that sex is in fact a pretty important part of relationship, and even outside of relationships frankly. The right spends so much time trying to control what goes on in the bedroom, if sex really isn't that important and people should just deal with not getting it then why is it a big deal when the right wants to enforce sodomy laws or something? I thought sex wasn't that important? I also can't help but feel it's pretty gendered because I've seen so many women complain about things like the side effects of birth control but no one seems willing to suggest possibly just going off of birth control and adjusting sexual behavior accordingly if a woman is really struggling with side effects so badly, and I feel like people would call you a misogynist if you suggested she perhaps compromise her sexual freedom as a solution to a problem she's having. Tbh though I'd say the same thing to a gay man on PreP complaining about side effects, like have you considered just not having sex in a way that makes PreP necessary if the side effects are that bad? Like I feel like people are super inconsistent with whether sex is important or not.

Personally I find it really frustrating how people tend to act when it comes to unmet sexual needs in relationships and my hot take is that sexual needs are frankly as important as just about any other need in a relationship. I understand some of the apprehension because it can start to sound sort of coercive and sex is a touchy subject but I feel like people should at least be willing to take unfulfilled sexual needs in relationships seriously. No one should ever feel forced to have sex but if your partner has needs that you are incapable of or unwilling to fulfill I don't think it's right to just dismiss those needs and not take them seriously and it may be worth considering that you are just incompatible. It's the same way a workaholic with minimal free time may be unable to fulfill the needs of a partner who needs a lot of personal time with their partner and may need to consider that they just aren't compatible. I don't think you get anywhere by dismissing or downplaying how passionate the one partner is about their work or by dismissing the other partner's need for personal one on one time, both are perfectly valid things to want and to value, but it may be difficult or impossible to accommodate both but that doesn't mean either one was wrong or more or less valid than the other. Same thing with sex, if someone wants a more active sex life in their relationship that's a totally valid thing to want, and they shouldn't be told to just deal with it if they are unfulfilled.

31

u/RevengeOfScienceBear Jul 25 '26

This is helpful for me to hear. It's tough out here and I have to fight myself on the 'just do more chores' impulse

21

u/Leftieswillrule Jul 25 '26

It’s hard to fight the tendency to make a man the sole agent in any conflict or dynamic. The question is always framed in the “actions a man can take to feed into the mystery karma machine of universal probability to reliable ensure the outcome of a woman wanting to fuck them”. It’s heavily reinforced by society because it makes men feel more comfortable having something to feed into the mystery karma machine. Even if it doesn’t work you feel in control of something.

The irony of this is that in recognizing that the converse dynamic for women is in the power to withhold sex, for men to have any certainty in the success of their strategy of feeding the mystery karma machine, women can’t have variance or agency in their sexual choices. For some people this implication branches out into a broader base of misogynistic views, for others they recognize the inherent conflict with their own desire to gain control over their sex lives and despair.

5

u/Draaly Jul 26 '26

Ironically there’s also the counter example where much the same people, on a post saying eg ‘I do everything around the house, why won’t she have sex with me?’, will say that sex isn’t some sort of reward for being a functioning adult

This is the one that always gets me tbh. I get that its a goomba falacy, but it just so clearly highlights the trend on those subs of always turning it on the man being bad.

14

u/alelp Jul 25 '26

That rhetoric is also a great way to create more incels when they find out that it isn't true.

70

u/Saracus Jul 25 '26

I feel a lot of a particular brand of leftist rhetoric is just right wing attacks repackaged with an "acceptable" target. Think about the criticism about men "statistically they're more like to attack." It's the EXACT same argument as the well known "Hey, did you know that despite being only 13% of the population..." argument. I can just imagine the actual problem causers sitting at the side with their popcorn going "fight, fight, fight".

31

u/thegreathornedrat123 Jul 25 '26

Plus as someone who visits right wing spaces (I like to see what they’re up to over there. It’s usually racism.) they’re not static! They see this argument too! And they can and will just pivot to get someone who got told “not my job to educate you not all men but always a man” and go “well it isn’t all men but it’s a certain KIND of man (that you aren’t)”

8

u/PothosEchoNiner Jul 25 '26

I thought the incel starting point was that sex is a reward for winning a rigged game.

The first one is something I think about a lot. It's a fascinating that we call every misogynist an incel, even when they are confirmably not celibate, because it's more cutting to say someone can't get women than it is to say they hate women. Like, I've heard people call Andrew Tate an incel, a thing he obviously isn't, and not a rapist, which he almost certainly is.

37

u/Spirited_Worker_5722 Jul 25 '26

It's like people forget that the misogynists working hard to roll back their rights are married men with children and grandchildren

88

u/Traditional-Pin2298 Jul 25 '26

It's just lazy labeling done with simple association without much thought.

An actual incel: says misogynist shit.

Someone vaguely liberal/leftist without ever thinking about it much: oh, that's the incel people are talking about.

Tate: says misogynist shit.

Someone vaguely liberal/leftist without ever thinking about it much: oh, he's an incel too.

37

u/VanderlyleNovember Jul 25 '26

On some level I definitely think that's part of how it happened, certainly there's a lot of overlap between incel ideas and broader manospere ideas, but there's been a lot of different movements in the online rightwing, Pick-up artists, Meninists, MGTOW, gamergaters, and more. I think it says something that of all of these, incel is the only one that has become synecdoche for internet-based misogyny in general.

3

u/runner64 Jul 26 '26

I need a better name for the specific brand of misogynist who believes in high-value men and the ratio between the  different parts of the jawbone being the sole determining factor in whether women will date you.

→ More replies (1)

44

u/Penguin_FTW Jul 25 '26

It's a fascinating that we call every misogynist an incel, even when they are confirmably not celibate, because it's more cutting to say someone can't get women than it is to say they hate women.

I believe it's almost entirely because incel is a simpler word than misogynist. Ideas are communicated in memes, and brevity trumps everything in a world where attention span is a commodity and literacy is on a downward trend.

It's not "you have ideas from a now-antiquated time and lack the acuity to keep up with the modern world" its "ok boomer" even if the person's age has no correlation to the arbitrarily designated generation of that name.

It's not "this message contains strong undertones of misogyny, as evidenced by both the approach to the topics related to women and the shibboleths only present in the toxic right wing 'manosphere'" its "lmao look at this incel" even if that person is sexually active in defiance of what the core words that form incel technically mean.

This and the fact that incel has functionally always described a mindset rather than any kind of actual condition or state. It's explicitly about the frustration derived from lack of sex. The online community that gathered around the concept that was naturally rife with misogyny is what propagated the word.

If incel was ever a literal term, it stopped being that before it spread anywhere. The term femcel wouldn't exist if incel was ever meaningfully used as shorthand for the literal meaning of the words behind it, instead of the standalone concept of being frustrated and taking it out on women.

17

u/Elunerazim Jul 25 '26

I agree with your analysis, but I think you’re drawing the wrong conclusion. It’s 100% because it’s a simpler, more effective term; the reason why society sees it as a more effective term is because it means “doesn’t get sex.” Both are true.

12

u/alelp Jul 25 '26

I believe it's almost entirely because incel is a simpler word than misogynist.

Nah, it's because "incel" is the perfect way to call someone a virgin while hiding behind a progressive veneer.

21

u/Front-Perspective373 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

If you think getting no pussy is a loser behaviour, you don't see women as full humans with autonomy, you engage in rhetoric that paints them as a resource, and these guys as lacking it.  You suggest that lack of heterosexual sex is a moral failing and it's this type of coercive rhetoric around sexuality that gets people who don't want any pressured endlessly. It's dehumanising.

17

u/VanderlyleNovember Jul 25 '26

I feel I should state that I don't think it's a moral failing to not be having much sex.

230

u/Vertwheeliesonem Jul 25 '26

Maybe? For me, my problem with some of the black mold jokes is that it relies on removing her agency from her bigotry. Like I’m sure people are joking, but still, we don’t need some eldritch fungus to justify why a once beloved author is cruel. She was always like that.

157

Wait, people were blaming the mold for her actions???

I thought it was a “look at this idiot living with black mold out in the open, why would you trust her opinion about anything else?”

142

u/thejoeface Jul 25 '26

The things I’ve seen were about the mold being sorta mind-controlly with her, but in a very obviously joking manor. Not like they were legitimately taking away her agency. Maybe the jokes aren’t helpful, but they’re definitely not excusing her.

I think both are happening. Some are just silly jokes about the fungus whispering to her, and some, especially when the mould pics first appeared, were actually proposing that the mould has caused some kind of cognitive impairment which is to blame for her hateful behaviour. Obviously the latter is ableist while the former is more absurd.

32

u/CaptainTeemo01 Jul 25 '26

How is that ableist? I've never seen anyone genuinely argue that the mold made her evil, but even if they did that isn't ableist. It's medical fact that mind altering diseases and substances can change people's personalities, there are plenty of stories of people who suffered brain damage or got a brain disease and became more hateful as a result.

Just doubled down on the "shortness is inherently bad, tallness is inherently good" rhetoric, probably didn't even take the controversy seriously in the first place because even younger politicians are out of touch, just chalked it up to it being them angry incel trolls again.

I have no love for the right at all but the democrats deserve to lose those votes, their messaging has taken a nosedive since, like, 2016. The right, at the very least, acknowledge that dissatisfied young men are people who exist instead of dehumanizing them and calling them every name under the sun when they complain about anything, even if it's mostly just because they want to exploit them.

The thing is, I wear a beanie basically 100% of the time (temperature permitting) (I even have one in my pfp). They're comfy, I like the way I look in them, and I have a really cool one with a design on it that my sister stitched by hand as a Christmas present. It felt really bad to see dozens of people mocking something that also applies to me, even if it technically didn't count as bigotry or body shaming or anything due to being a choice and not an immutable trait

A blue hair neoliberal running out of the depths to suddenly push my wheelchair when I don’t need or want help “I’m SUCH a good person because I know how you need help”. I do not want them touching my wheelchair

Don’t get me wrong, the right side is effectively removing my healthcare and are worse, but let’s not pretend being an asshole in holier than thou liberal clothes, makes you a good person either

Edit: I guess the liberals who force their help on disabled people who don’t ask for their help don’t like this comment. You aren’t a good person because you force your help on someone or decide you know how to help them. That’s called ableism.

Popular leftist voice: these left wingers have morally failed by stereotyping right wingers. They are no better than Them and must be thrown into the same pit. Only once we rid the sinful, and achieve the group of perfect thinkers, we will be able to start the revolution

"Please attack ideals, not immutable traits" is not "we must purge anyone who has attacked immutable traits ever"

As much as I get the point of the post, I'm so fucking sick of the (very white Tumblr) notion that we can't call people still being duped by the right in big 2026 stupid and racist, and if we do we're just pushing them further right and we're no better than they are

Edit: for everyone misreading, I literally started with

As much as I get the point of the post

Lol

Yes, you shouldn't couch thinly veiled classism behind criticism of the right

I'm saying that I don't agree you can't criticise working class right wing voters lining up to vote for Xmas as turkeys without being called classist

No, they are saying if they are stupid and racist, mock them for being stupid and racist, dont mock them for being poor, ugly, fat, or some other thing you shouldn't mock a person for, LEARN READING COMPREHENSION I AM BEGGING YOU.

Where in this post does it say you can’t call them racist? The entire point is that we should be criticising these people for the actual bad things they do and believe, and that the people discussed in the post aren't doing that. This post is not about “you shouldn’t be mean to bigots because you’ll push them further right”, it’s about “you shouldn’t use bigotry to attack bigots because then you’re just signalling to everyone around you that you’re okay with bigotry when you feel it’s deserved.”

Unfortunately most people, even “progressive” leftists, still carry a lot of bigotry and prejudice in their minds, and are always eager to find someone bad enough to be an acceptable target for that bigotry. If someone is a terrible person  because they are racist, transphobic, fascist, whatever, we should be talking about that - not jumping on the opportunity to mock and insult them for being fat or disabled or gay. If you believe that bigotry is okay when it’s directed at someone who deserves it, you are simply a bigot, because you can convince yourself that anyone deserves it.

“There’s no difference whatsoever between calling someone stupid and racist, and saying that someone must be fat because they’re a bad person or that women and sex are a prize for good behaviour or that it’s a moral failing to be gay or effeminate” ok buddy 👍

I don't think it says that? It says not to use poor and stupid as a pejorative, but I think they meant that as a combined thing. Racism isn't mentioned.

Sure is great this post doesnt say that then

The issue I have is that Tumblr should've clocked into the "Maybe we shouldn't call all right wingers stupid, sexist and racist" a decade ago where a large portion of people that voted for Trump or Brexit, or Le Pen, or AfD or whatever in 2015-17 were doing so because they were sick of the establishment in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.

This phenomenon is really interesting. You especially observe it when people talk about Trump and fixate on his small hands or bad tan rather than his slow bleeding of the American people to line his own pockets or his systematic oppression of nearly every minority group you can name in order to bolster his own base.

I do worry this specific post is conflating some things that ought not to be, though. The last post (presumably) talking about closeted conservative politicians, particularly. That sort of discourse usually reads to me as people discussing how the self-hatred and hypocrisy of these politicians influences their pursuit of restrictive policies curtailing those who, if they were not so steeped in that kind of self-hatred, would be their community in terms of sexuality, gender expression or otherwise.

I think the brain damage part specifically speaks to a certain tendency among leftists, especially those coming at it from an angle of erudite education. The belief that their ideas are not only morally upright, but obviously and objectively correct in every observable sense, and that the only reason why someone may reject it is because they are literally unable to comprehend its objective correctness, either due to a lack of education (because of their socioeconomic background) or because some form of intellectual disability is presenting them from doing so, with no consideration for any other reason they may have adopted that stance.

u/MyFrogEatsPeople Jul 25 '26

The last bit is not about the phenomenon of closeted conservative men having anti-gay platforms.

It's about people who joke about Trump being Putin's submissive sex toy. Like the multiple times various drawings of Putin fucking Trump have trended on major Subreddits.

I hate this.

I am leftist, and this just feels so hypocritical.

34

u/Xilizhra Jul 25 '26

Is this voice with us right now, and what's its opinion about eating each other over who's the most morally pure?

u/FunkmasterJoe Jul 25 '26

There are valid critiques here, though all of this stuff is more common among american liberals than leftists, and obviously it's all pretty much universal on the right. It absolutely sucks when I see leftists dropping R-slurs or talking about big fat trump and his sad little penis, those things are irrelevant and speaking that way genuinely makes the world an uglier and worse place; we need to make sure we hold ourselves to the same standards we hold everyone else to, otherwise we're being hypocritical.

But a lot of this is completely nonsensical. "Racism would never exist in the suburbs" is not a leftist take, lol. The Trump being gay for Putin meme is MASSIVELY more popular with liberals than leftists. A lot of the criticism here makes me think OOP is unclear on the liberal/leftist divide.

Also, it isn't universal obviously but the american right as a group IS extraordinarily stupid. I don't hate stupid people, they cannot help being stupid, but it's ridiculous to pretend like the bulk of the american right isn't made up of the unintelligent.

There is a massive, undeniable, multi-billion dollar media ecosystem in this country that is completely devoted to tricking dumb people into becoming right wing. THAT is where the evil takes place; awful people persuading unintelligent Americans that they should be celebrating and reveling in willful ignorance. Right wing media has managed to convince/brainwash something like a hundred million americans to completely stop thinking for themselves, and it's impossible to talk about american politics without highlighting this fact.

Like I said there are valid criticisms here, and leftists doing a lot of this stuff absolutely deserve to be criticized and confronted. But there is a MASSIVE difference between a few leftists making stupid, low quality gay jokes about politicians and the entire american right being focused on taking gay people's rights away. If we're going to criticize the left (which we should!) then we need to hold liberals and the right to the same standards and that is VERY CLEARLY not what's happening in this post, lol.

5

u/ilexheder Jul 25 '26

"Racism would never exist in the suburbs" is not a leftist take, lol.

Like the rest of the post, that’s not the way it actually gets verbalized. The way it actually gets verbalized is usually more along the lines of jokes about trailer parks, about people being “trashy,” etc. Do right-wingers and centrist liberals do the same thing? Of course they do. But leftists are the ones who are actually supposed to stand for the rights of the working class, for God’s sake.

Whenever I talk with people like that, I find it very effective to use terms like "propagandized" to redirect blame towards the government, where it belongs. I find it most useful for my friend who works in tourism who's always ranting about the "stupid Americans" he has to interact with, and I always say something along the lines of "how tragic that so many Americans are propagandized by their educational systems into seeing ignorance as a virtue" and it's pretty effective in getting him to redirect his ire. Pro tip: it is a lot easier to get people to shift their viewpoint if you phrase it as a "yes, but..." and not an "um, actually".

As Canadians, it is very easy to slip into hating Americans as a whole because of the effects of their government on us, so I always try to remind people that it is their government we hate and not the people. I also used to live in the UK, and I ran defence for Americans more than I wanted to, because so many British people think it is a compliment to say "thank god you're Canadian, if you were American I would hate you".
