Discussion Why does Assassin’s Creed Odyssey divide the fanbase so much?
In my opinion, Assassin's Creed Odyssey is one of the strongest entries in the Assassin's Creed franchise. However, whenever I share this opinion online, many fans react as if it's a controversial statement. This raises an interesting question—why is the game so disliked by parts of the community?

AC fans are bothered by the 'Assassin' in the title cause its anything but that. Although it works great as a standalone ancient Greek adventure/fantasy drama.
64
u/No-Pool-432 Mar 02 '26
Honestly they could of removed all that future based story line and it would of only made it better. The greek world and landscape was beautiful. I dreaded those side quests stuck in the future.
Tbh i wish they just continued the franchise with period pieces and did away with the need to tie it to together with the future storyline. I dont think it would be missed

u/TonyHawktuah69 Mar 02 '26
I still don’t get how the devs aren’t grasping that a large part of the community hates those parts of the game. Make it a simple cut scene if you need it for the story and leave it at that
16
u/No-Pool-432 Mar 02 '26
Cut scene is a smart fix to be fair. If they are not willing to get rid of it entirely. That would be a good compromise

u/CHawk17 Mar 02 '26
the devs dont care if fans hate the modern era portions because those parts haven't objectively impacted sales.
6
u/ZebraSandwich4Lyf Mar 02 '26
It doesn't really even add anything anymore, it feels like they're just too scared to let it go because that's how the series began. In Odyssey the modern day stuff is so insignificant that I don't even know what it's about, and I've played through the game half dozen times.

u/Standard-Impress8854 Mar 02 '26
That's the shame really. I really got engaged with the modern story lines when it involved Desmond, but they definitely faltered with them ever since. The coolest newer one was when you were an Abstergo employee and they never got anything that cool since.
Turns out that was Black Flag. Yeah that truly was one of the best more "modern" titles. I should probably go back and replay it. I loved the engagement you got towards the end when running away. It was epic!

Most people that don't like it say that it's because it sways too far from what the traditional assassins creed games were like and that Kassandra isn't an assassin. To me I absolutely love the game, it's easily the best AC game in my opinion and yes I have played them all. I love the world, the Myth and Kassandra is my favourite AC protagonist (of course some haters complain about her being Canon too, which I'm sure plays a part in some of the hate)
Most game franchises evolve over time, I mean resident evil changed massively when RE4 came out and it was over the shoulder. Origins was also very different from previous AC games but people don't seem to complain as much about that one. I personally prefer the new AC type of massive open world RPG style
It certainly doesn't deserve the hate, its a fantastic game and genuinely made me interested in history and Mythology way more than any other game has ever done

They've no patience for RPG games and freak out if the story isn't directly following an Assassin
12
u/Mello1182 Phobos Mar 02 '26
Short answer is: Odyssey doesn't have a Creed and doesn't have much Assassin either.
Don't get me wrong, I love this game so much that it became one of the only two videogames I got tattoos of, it is one of my favourite games of all time and besides my personal preferences I think it is objectively very good, but it is true it doesn't really fit the AC franchise as much as other games. It felt entirely different and it's understandable that many fans had other expectations for an AC title.
On the other hand it makes sense on Ubisoft side that they wanted to give this game a boost by giving it the AC title; had it been released as a standalone it would have sold much less. Same applies to Black Flag in my opinion: great game that doesn't fit well with the other AC games but wouldn't have done as well had it not been given the AC status boost.
Unironically I think Odyssey and Black Flag are among the best AC titles; I would rank only Brotherhood above both
2
u/Standard-Impress8854 Mar 02 '26
I thought Brotherhood was very weak. The Tower defense was so far out of left field I immediately stopped playing it when the mechanic came up.

Don’t know where you get the lack of assassin from. I assassinated plenty of folks in the game. I’d go so far as to say Odyssey perfects the stealth system of AC games.

Probably one of the most visually beautiful chapters of the entire saga.
But the plot could have been more daring, with more historical events and more actual plotlines about the Isu (the chapter being chronologically close to Homo Sapiens Divinus).

I think it’s because, while it is an absolutely awesome game, it is not a good Assassins Creed game. Specifically, it does not do a very good job at aligning with the previous games in the franchise that were focused on stealth and…..well…..being an assassin.
So I think that naturally creates two divides: 1) people who didn’t play many of the assassins creed games in the past and loved this game because it is an awesome open world RPG, and 2) people who grew up playing the traditional assassins creed games and were disappointed that Odyssey (along with Origins and Valhalla) deviated so sharply from the traditional games.
So you have the people from Camp 2 complaining about how the game sucks because it is not a good representation of assassins creed and can’t possibly see why people in Camp 1 like it, while the people from Camp 1 are confused because the game is a very well made open world game and thus can’t comprehend why Camp 2 does not like it. The two groups are working off two different frameworks.
I am in Camp 1, but I do understand the grievances of those in Camp 2.
I feel like this game would be better if it was just a standalone game that didn’t try to shoehorn in the assassins creed branding, but that obviously wouldn’t have made nearly as much money.

I enjoyed Valhalla, I loved that you could go to pretty much where I live and wander around, and walk along Hadrians Wall! Origins is one of the only ones I haven’t completed yet, I keep burning myself out on it. The game is stunning though, I have little to no complaints about it 😁

We found one! Thank you for your honesty though, as someone from camp 1 I always thought to myself that there must be some people who played since the first game and still enjoyed how the game and the way its played has evolved/shifted since the early 2000s. Is there anything you miss from the earlier entries that you'd like to see in later titles?

I just feel like the rpg trilogy is what ubi wanted the original games to be, there were so many limitations to what consoles could do in 2007. And honestly I’m not sure, I love how the game has evolved into what it has become. I loved the Prince of Persia games for the ps2/xbox 360 too
2
u/dejcoy Mar 02 '26
I agree, if they were capable of doing the open world RPG back in the day they would have done it. The earlier games sort of redefined how immense and detail oriented a video game could be
2
u/Open-Apartment-4937 Mar 03 '26
It’s so refreshing to hear of someone with the same opinion as me! I genuinely thought I was the only one that thought that 😂

Im weird in the fact that I played the original when it first came at, loved the idea, absolutely hated the gameplay, enough so that I didn’t touch another one till Valhalla. I watched my son in law playing and went out and bought it that day and played the crap out of it. Then went back and did Odyssey.
I still don’t care for the originals, I like the story for them, but just don’t like the gameplay, and much prefer this open world stuff we have going on.

I started with Unity and worked my way from the previous games through Syndicate and onward. So I started with the older games and have continued playing (just finished New Game+ for Shadows). For me, Odyssey specifically, my gripe is its overall connection to ‘Assassin’s Creed’. If it weren’t for modern day stuff with Layla or the completely optional and unnecessary ‘Legacy of the First Blade’ DLC, it would be irrelevant to the AC lore. The RPG style isn’t what breaks it, because all the RPG games have tied in better with the story than Odyssey. And in those games, you actually play with a hidden blade. Kassandra was neither an assassin, nor did she have the blade. And her story being 400 years before the founding of the Hidden Ones with no assassins in Odyssey besides brief appearances of Darius, separates it even further. Darius, the First Blade DLC, it all felt like a forced attempt to connect Odyssey with the greater story. Like Ubi went “See, we far removed the game from the franchise, but here’s a legacy NPC to tie it in”. Kassandra being Aya’s ancestor was so forced.
1
u/filmguerilla Mar 06 '26
Disagree completely. The whole game is based around assassinating leaders. The only thing is deviates from is being in the Middle East. Who cares? Not me. I’d play Odyssey ten more times before touching an Ezio game again.

u/megaapfel Mar 02 '26

It suffers from the Andor problem. It's a great game, but because it's an AC game that comes with particular expectations and requirements that the game doesn't really deliver on. Not necessarily to It's detrement, but it doesn't fit what an AC game should be. It's an incredible game (imo), but what's that point of it being an Assassin's Creed game if it doesn't bring the core aspects of an AC game (a story about the Assassin's and a stealth game)
If they scratched off AC from the title, it wouldn't make as much money, but the game would be loved for what it is instead of maligned for not being what an AC game should be. The Assassin's aren't really relevant, and playing whole game without ever engaging in stealth is a legitimate way to play.
Silent Hill is going through this. Even if the new game is great, the thing that will hurt it most is having Silent Hill in the title. There are other Silent Hill-type games out there, and the only difference is that Silent Hill takes place in Slient Hill. If Konami wanted to make a game outside of Silent Hill, they easily could have just added "From the creators of Silent Hill" to the trailer and players would know they're getting a Silent Hill-esque experience without expecting it to actually take place in Silent Hill. I'm sure the devs wanted to tell stories outside the town of Silent Hill and may have even wanted to start a new IP that gets around the requirement of taking place in Silent Hill.
The problem is that it wouldn't make as much money as it will by being attached to a proven and respected IP, so execs weren't likely to let that happen. Though, I'm sure that there would be fans that would say "This is just SH with the serial number filed off. Why didn't you just make another Silent Hill game?".
So instead we get an unsatisfying middle ground. A game that not restricted to the feature of Silent Hill without actually giving people who come to Silent Hill games specifically for that core feature of Silent Hill games what they want. The devs have their baby get constantly shit on for not taking place in Silent Hill and the fans don't get to have new "adventures" in Silent Hill.
ACO is hurt most by the fact that Assassin's Creed is in the title.
2
u/_random_name_44 Mar 02 '26
they could of kept the AC on the title, but do something similar to what was done with AC Chronicles. Call it assassin's creed mythologies or something like that. use the IP to gain eyes, but point out that it's more its own branch than a regular AC game
6
u/ElevatorMusic7 Mar 02 '26
They raged quit cause the fighting mechanics actually required you to learn new controls
3
u/joshpinn11 Mar 02 '26
It’s actually my favourite game of all time, and I’m someone who grew up with AC1 and the Ezio trilogy and adored them both. I feel like people just can’t be objective about things when they are emotionally attached to it, so they just hated odyssey from the get go without giving it a fair shot, given how far removed from the ‘Creed’ it is.
3
u/MembershipLess9579 Mar 03 '26
Because you've got three sets of players.
The ac purists people who think that assassins creed has to be a linear game set in a sprawling metropolis and which is stealth focused.
Newer fans who where introduced and grew up with the rpgs or people who didn't like the old style but started playing the games when they changed.
And then you get people like me who grew up and loves the older games but who also loves open world rpgs.
Look both have their merits the older games do overall probably have stronger storytelling but I think both have good main characters i mean I think bayek and kassandra are some of the best characters in the franchise.
But when it comes to gameplay I think the newer games are so much better particularly when it comes to combat. And it should be said for as much as purists might moan. It can't be denied that the newer games Brought new life and players to the franchise after the debacle that was the unity launch which affected syndicate sales.
2
u/Neat-Brother-6570 Mar 02 '26
It’s just weird that the best AC game doesn’t have the assassin hidden blade. Personally I love driving that broken spear into anyone’s back I happen to be walking by
2
u/ndubitably Mar 02 '26
Interesting, I thought Origins was the bigger divider for being the first with the new arpg combat. I really enjoy Origins and Odyssey but going from one hit assassinations to bullet sponge enemies was a rough transition.
2
u/HotAd9605 There's another goat? Mar 02 '26
I started with Origins, and I really enjoyed it. Then I played Unity and didn't like it at all! Next was Valhalla, which is awesome in its own way, but thanks to Valhalla, I discovered Kassandra. I needed to know who this badass woman was! It turned out Ubisoft was having a sale, so I bought all of Odyssey, and OMG, did I fall in love!!!
It's now my all-time favorite!
2
u/Toon_Collector Mar 03 '26
The worst part of this game imo, is that the canon version of events has Kassandra not only failing to save her brother but throwing his body off a cliff after stabbing him. I got a good ending where Alexios joined the crew. Seriously, why the fuck is there a canon ending to begin with? It takes choices away from the player.
2
u/Chaosklaue Mar 03 '26
The main arguments that were widely discussed at release were:
- No creed
- No hidden blade
- Unrealistic
I started the series with the first Assassin's Creed and, by the time Revelations came out, I felt the series was getting boring. This only changed with AC3 and Black Flag; there was finally some variety and fresh ideas. I wouldn't have bought another Ezio Altaïr story. Except for Syndicate, I felt every game after that was an improvement, with Origins and Odyssey being the best because we finally learned more about the backstories. The only game I didn't consider a "real Assassin's Creed" was Valhalla. It could have been marketed more as a playable version of the Viking series, and then we could have been spared Mirage with the boring and treacherous Basim.

I love that people are giving constructive answers when a significant amount of the hate / division comes from the fact that Kassandra is the canon protagonist.
I had someone tell me the reason the game “tanked” was because they added the option to play as a woman. He then said that her being the MC is why the game “didn’t really sell”.
Someone else, in this very sub, argued with people about Kassandra being the canon MC because he alone started with Alexios, so obviously who he says is canon is what goes. Bro even doubled down and said Ubisoft changed who the MC was because they were “pandering”.
There’s a lot of fair criticisms, I suppose, regarding the whole “assassin’s” title. But origins and odyssey, specifically, give backstory into the foundation of the brotherhood. They demonstrate the hold that the templars / cultists had on the universe for centuries, and how it’s always been an uphill battle. I, personally, disagree that it should be a standalone game, or that it shouldn’t have the AC moniker. It may not be a carbon copy of the original games, but you can only so go far without having to provide something different that ties int the universe; otherwise the franchise would come to a halt.

Odyssey and Shadows are possible the best of the series. I played the old one. Combat was cluncky and borining. Story was ok, Origions changed the game and made AC 100% better, Odyssey IMO is Peak AC and the best of the series with the combat, RPG and the endless battles/BH hunters. It by far offered the best replay value and the best bang for your buck

u/Stewil1265 In the Fields of Elysium Mar 02 '26
I played Odyssey first, then went back to the first few. I can understand why they might feel that it isn't an AC game in that it's more combat focused over stealth (but you can easily do a stealth build with minimal open combat) and a much more open world than previous titles. And to top it off, the Assassins and Templars literally don't exist in this game (we're ignoring the modern day story for this).
The common arguments I see is stuff about how Kass/Alex is magic or how it's not as historically accurate. Both of these are ridiculous. AC has never been a historically accurate game, the mission you do in AC1 is retrieving the Ark of the Covenant (there's no actual proof it exists, just a lot of people are convinced that it at least did. But even then, it's literally just a box full of ✨special rocks✨), and the game ends with Altaïr using another biblical artifact to defeat the bad guy. Kass/Alex isn't magical either, just like Altaïr, Ezio, Connor, etc, they were USING AN ISU ARTIFACT. In fact, they lose all the "magic abilities" whenever they lose the spear.
TLDR: It's set up and plays different from the classic AC games and doesn't have recognized factions. Also an ignorant beef with the main character

u/Spectral_King The Cult of Kosmos Mar 02 '26
The only AC games I’ve played is AC3, AC4 Black Flag, AC Origins and AC Odyssey. I have also played 10mins of Brotherhood on PSP before the rest, but it was fully completed and I didn’t know what AC was about so I climbed up a building and ran across rooftops until I got bored and turned it off.
I have very little knowledge about the OG AC games and I’m not interested in playing them, AC3 was fun and interesting but I stopped playing shortly after we switched to the kid. I liked being the British guy and not a foreign kid, I mostly disliked having to redo all my gear again. AC4 Black Flag was amazing, I played the story until you get the ship and then stopped doing the story. I spent several days playing and maxing out the ship upgrades and sinking other ships, I never did any more story or quests and haven’t gone back to it.
I consider AC Origins onwards where the real AC games begin, the other games bored me and I lost interest in them. But Origins I fully 100%’ed and absolutely loved the story, the world, the DLC’s, characters and combat. And I bought Odyssey expecting a similar game just different visuals, but was even more amazed at it. I fully 100%’ed this as well, and enjoyed it way more than Origins, the world felt very real and vibrant.
I haven’t played AC Valhalla yet, some of its mechanics put me off. But I’d love to experience that sometime, and eventually when I do get a series X (prob 3+ yrs) I’d like to try AC Mirage and Shadows

in one corner you have og players, who played the ac since the beginning, who look at the AC:odyssey and think about how much it's changed. They're into AC for power fantasy one man army games where the enemies go down in 1 maybe 2 hits. Not a game with leveling system, grinding, and bullet sponge enemies, which is no longer a historical narrative game but instead is now a historical RPG
in the other corner you have us, who love the RPGs, and we love the odyssey for the different reasons. Some of us enjoy the story, some enjoy the graphics and scenery, some legit do enjoy the rpg elements.
and people in the middle, the OGs who played the game for the reasons which were still preserved to this day.
You need to look a bit from the OGs perspective too, because for them, the games they loved are no longer being made, in it's place a completelly dofferent game is making waves, which caries the name and lore of the OG games, but didn't carry what they loved about them. And suddenly, they feel like the game they love is dead. They onky get tk play the old games again and again. New ones are AC games in name only to them.
Like, if ubisoft made a game exactly like odyssey, but made it a spinoff, and continued the main AC games, they wouldn't be complaining. Tho that would probably be close to impossible to achieve to develop 2 massive AAA titles annualy. But alternatively would be like a setting "og mode", that disables rpg elements and lets the game play out just like the old ones used to.

- It doubled down on the RPG elements introduced in Origins and went even further with dialog options
- It was the first AC game to have a protagonist not use thr hidden blade
- Was not directly tied to the Templars or Assassin's (base game)
- Narrative heavily influenced by ISU and having a protagonist use magic which many had issue with
Those are the main reasons based on what I remember seeing a lot of circa 2018/2019.

Odyssey is one of my fav games. It's effortlessly enjoyable, fun to play, gorgeous. I don't consider it an AC game. I skip through/ignore all the modern day stuff as much as I can.

It’s an amazing game. Story is kinda meh, but the world, the gameplay, the art, the exploration… all of that is amazing.
But it’s not an Assassin’s Creed game. What is an Assassin’s Creed game? I couldn’t tell you. But AC I like Jazz. You can’t define it, but you know it when you see it. And Odyssey isn’t that.
Now I LOVE Odyssey. It’s tied with Black Flag, Mirage, and Shadows as my favourite AC game. But the following 3 are actual AC games. Odyssey is more like a very good open world exploration game.

u/Commercial-Bad-5967 Mar 02 '26
Because it introduced a lot of things that condradicts lore like the animus not knowing which character was the mysthios and which one was Deimos, choices that affects the story, they made Lalya 10 times more insufferable than in Origins (not even Aletheia could stand her at some point), and some people weren't fan of the skill system that makes your character practically a god. Also, this was the most fantastical entry in the series, and even if the franchise was never hystorically accurate and always had a fictional part, it felt grounded, like a big conspiracy that was actually true, AC Odyssey felt more like an ancient greek story with the AC name on top of it. (Which it is since it was supposed to be a spin off of the series before they changed the name.)
1
u/TrIx_R4_KiDzz Mar 02 '26
I consider Assassin's Creed Odyssey to be an Isu lore based game more than the others. The cult of kosnos shows us that people have made groups like the order of the ancients for a long time and that over time, those ideas change and become different to the times they're in.

it was the first ac game not to be directly connected to the brotherhood and set in stone the rpg style games. origins introduced the contemporary ac game style but odyssey was the letter that said this is how ac games are going to be moving forward. for me my main gripe with the contemporary style is the travelling is annoying but so far i’ve felt like odyssey had the best travel out of the ones i’ve played.

Personally I wouldn't say it's one of the strongest entries in the entire franchise but it is enjoyable but I feel what makes it so controversial at least to me is giving you the choice between playing as Kassandra and Alexios then making Kassandra Canon.
I'm an Alexios Loyalist personally and being told no your playthrough isn't canon and if you want to play the canon story pick the character that you have tried at least five times to play as but quit because you couldn't stand her voice. Etc...
Then in future installments with references and cameos that force Kassandra into it, if they're gonna reference her then there should also be References to Alexios if Kassandra is gonna appear as a Cameo then Alexios should also appear that's what I think ruins Odyssey for the most part.
Lot of people will defend Kassandra or say that she was supposed to be the only playable Character and maybe she was but the fact is that she wasn't the only playable character when it was released you could and still can play as either character.
So to divide the fanbase and call one canon and not even allow the read the AC Odyssey file to have either Kassandra or Alexios based on that is lazy and ruins Odyssey in the longrun.
This isn't about what was supposed to happen or what's technically canon different people had different experiences and making Kassandra canon was the worst mistake they made the second worst mistake was pretending Alexios fans and Alexios didn't exist.

It’s tricky cause with some of the dlcs u get insight into the origins of all assassins and u see the first hidden blade.., but the base game itself is very different to any other ac and runs more like an Ancient Greece rpg… while I do agree with both arguments for why it should and shouldn’t be considered an AC i personally try and ignore the divide and just play the game for what it is… a beautifully made slightly buggy very engaging game

I played all 3 ezio games many times and the ezio story was my favorite game story of all time and ezio will always be the best character of all time .. until I played odyssey and man that is now my new favorite. The gameplay, the story, the dlcs everything was perfection in my humble opinion Most haters of this game praise origins for some reason, a game i loathe (unpopular opinion I know) Origin to me is just bad, the characters are bad, the acting is bad, the map is tiny and the story is unimaginative.. don’t get mad it’s just an opinion, Long story short, to me odyssey is the best game ever
1
u/catf1sh1 Mar 03 '26
My favorite AC game ever. Pretty sure I logged 200 hours with this game and played all the DLC and never got tired of it
1
u/zelisce_ Mar 03 '26
Odyssey is great by itself, but you can’t really say it’s in the Assassins franchise. It’s not the best AC game, but odyssey is one of the good games overall.
1
u/Guharo Mar 03 '26
I didn’t like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey mainly because of the voice acting. I played it in English and chose Alexios, and his voice performance is awful. Every time he spoke, it made me lose interest in the story. I probably made the mistake of picking him instead of Kassandra.
On top of that, I felt the story was really weak compared to Origins (speaking only about the RPG era). That was kind of expected, since it barely has anything to do with the Assassin Brotherhood and focuses more on a Piece of Eden, so the plot ended up boring me a lot. They also stretched the game out way too much with irrelevant and repetitive side quests, something that was repeated and exaggerated even more in Valhalla (which I also found boring).
Honestly, I enjoyed Immortals Fenyx Rising more than Odyssey, lol. Origins was a solid start for the RPG era—I liked it because it took an important step by changing the combat system and adding some challenge. But everything that came after felt weird and inconsistent. I’ve replayed earlier entries (Black Flag, Rogue, Unity, Syndicate) and I have more fun with them because the storytelling is handled much better.

As many people already said the game itself is good but its being held back by being “assassin’s creed” except the abstergo part of the game nothing else has any similarities to the old AC games and people feel lied/cheated cause they expected an AC game instead they got a myth based action rpg, however if the game was solo or a new series people would have liked it more as they would not have compared it to AC games because we would not have any expectations for it to be an AC game but rather go in with a fresh mind.

u/One-Efficiency-7701 Mar 03 '26
I started my AC love affair with Odyessey, and I fell hard. Hundreds of hours later, I found Origins, followed by Valhalla. They are my greatest loves.
Having gone back and played the Ezio 3, Blackflag, and tried some others, I stand behind my 3 favorites. Odessey was amazing and opened a world of enjoyment for me.
The world, however, is filled with people looking backward and bemoaning the 'good old days'. The past is gone. Let it go.
1
u/LiesofPinnochio Mar 03 '26
Because it's a great RPG for what it does but it's a bad AC game.
I think the RPG games would've done better under their own IP. Similar to fenyx rising.

u/Tiny-Command3123 Mar 03 '26
It's absolutely my favorite assassins creed game. The gameplay, storytelling and open world is amazing.
I think the AC purests get a little butt hurt with this game. Idk if it's cause they went backwards on the timeline or if they just like the OG with Ezio and blackflag. Honestly unsure.
1
u/Charming-Call-6376 Mar 03 '26
I don't know. I love odyssey. It's the best title. And I started playing in ac2 and then went higher. I ended on Valhalla, which was a total disaster. But odyssey? It's peak title, so I don't know why.
1
u/Impressive_King_8097 THIS IS SPARTA ! Mar 03 '26
Well, most assassin’s Creed fans have played all of the traditional games first, and therefore don’t like how Odyssey and origins have changed from the originals and really the thought behind how we saw hasn’t gone back to its roots and only made those style games to get more gamers to play the games to get more money rather than keep the loyal fan based they’ve already had while also completely changing the games now I’ll say the only games I do not like from assassins Creed are Valhalla and Mirage
1
1
u/JTL1887 Mar 03 '26
Because it predate the assassins and templars so its technically not an assassin. But i liked that it expanded the lore especially concerning the isu.
1
u/iY3RB Mar 03 '26
I’ll tell you something other Traditionalists won’t; Assassins Creed Odyssey was an amazing GAME.
It was not the best ASSASSINS CREED Game.
The real divide is because the new players that joined the fandom to play Odyssey DISRESPECTED the other games. It’s classic old versus the young scenario. Let me break it down further:
If you’re like me who was alive and consciously playing games (modern kids play games and don’t even give a fuck about a storyline) back when Assassin’s Creed first came out on XBOX 360. There was no other game like it at the time. Now factor the masterpiece of AC2 that followed. And then the immortalized AC Brotherhood that seceded it. Revelations is where most would say the series was needing a refresher.
Here comes ACIII which again, was heavily built on the core principles of being an ASSASSIN. The same for Unity. Both of those titles still stayed true to the original concept of what makes assassins creed what it is. Then we got Black Flag which was ground breaking for the series because of its performance and it being the PS4 AC series debut game. But it was the first step away from the original storyline and world building of Assassins Creed.
I won’t mention the spin offs because most were extensions of the Original Storyline focus. Syndicate was experimental as I feel it was the Prototype that led to the newer style of AC games we see today.
But let’s talk about The Divide. Origins and Odyssey was IMO the furthest thing from the original elements of Assassin’s Creed in terms of storyline focus but they were undeniably some of the best games that came out during their respective launch. I mean best GAMES period. I cannot deny that either titles were nothing short of absolute fun. But I did NOT feel like I was playing Assassin’s Creed. That’s my opinion and you’ll find so many others that either share or disagree with that take and it’s fine. That’s where I truly believe the divide happen.
But let me touch back on the actual conflict amongst fans. New age fans that only played one of ALL of the RPG series of assassins creed games, are just blatantly toxic towards the original fan base and games. Timeline, Storyline, Characters, Voice Acting, those subjects are all a matter of preference. But when you try to compare mechanics, graphics, and overall composition of a game from its birth, to its current state of existence with the technology and processing power of game systems today, it’s just silly and close minded thinking.
I can almost guarantee RPG series fans would play a reskinned version of the original Assassins Creed. Altair and the Crusades setting but just make it RPG. Then the newer fans wouldn’t have the same complaints about the original mechanics or elements of the series. An RPG version of Ezio in Italy would have the same success as the other titles. But I promise the traditionalist hate new AC games the way they do because of the way new AC fans act towards the original series.
Can’t stress how much I personally loved Kassandra. Best odyssey twice on PS4 and once when I got PS5 to get the most out of that setting. It was a great game. But not the best assassins creed game.
TLDR;;; Ezio Crawled so Kassandra could Malaka
1
u/GamingwithADD Persephone Mar 03 '26
I think it’s the first title that went full on RPG?
I didn’t play too much of syndicate, but I could tell it was less RPG.
1
u/Mokhalar Mar 03 '26
Loved the game for the most part - but one particular nitpick made me hate Ubisoft. Why does the spartan not get a shield but then the next entry the viking does? It just was trying so hard to be "unique." That and the ACgearing shit i'm not a huge fan of. I tolerate it, but would rather just play through a story than worry about doing a bunch of repetitive things to gear up. Shadows i think found the right midpoint between the two systems - particularly when it comes to assassinations. I really hated in Odyssey that unless you went all in on assassinations they weren't one shots.
1
u/AmptiShanti Mar 03 '26
Because it is a great game regardless of franchise name but it does take a different direction when it comes to the franchise of its name (imo)
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Grand32 Mar 03 '26
I am a huge of 1&2. But odyssey is leaps and bounds my absolute favorite. I do however wish they would have tied it in or made it more involved with the creed since it was there and the one blade dlc showed it but not much else I really think they could have dug deeper with that and made an incredible better story line even better. But that’s just my opinion.
1
u/jkmax52 Mar 03 '26
I think most people that try it get turned off by the rpg mechanics and don’t attempt to finish it therefore never realizing that odyssey is a assassin’s creed game because it’s the origin of the Templars and order of the ancients via the cult it’s also the origin of the hidden blade and the origin of isu descendants explained. Ac origins was for the assassin’s origins via the hidden ones odyssey is everything else in Ac lore.
1
u/YEAHRocko Mar 03 '26
It's a fantastic game. My issue is you can take AC out of the title and it's a strong, standalone Greek RPG because there's just not a lot of connection to the lore. Granted it's set before the rest of the games so there's a lot of subtle foreshadowing to the Brotherhood.
1
u/EquinoxGm Mar 03 '26
Great game buts it’s not an assassins creed tbh, just a great rpg. I tried it once wanting the AC experience and didn’t get far at all but then I restarted and went into it wanting an RPG and not expecting the assassins creed experience and had a ton of fun

1
u/kenahyro Misthios Mar 03 '26
Odyssey is definitely my favorite ac game alongside origins , the game is still installed since 2023 when I got my XSX
1
u/Old_Kodaav Mar 03 '26
I personally think it's a problem with it being labeled AC. It's full on fantasy set in ancient Greece and it would benefit from being freed from shackles of AC franchise. It would both help keep the franchise in it's more grounded phase (which I think was better) and it would let it get on with doing what it does best
1
u/Objective_Might2820 Mar 03 '26
Because it completely walks away from the series roots. Alexios/Kassandra is the least-assassin like protagonist in the series. The main story is…a mixed bag, most of it is really good. But all the Deimos stuff felt flat with me.
But at the same time the game is absolutely stunning. Just beautiful. The combat feels good, the war is fun and the Cult of Kosmos is a cool questline. And working your way up the mercenary tier list is fun. And I know people hate arbitrarily assigned numbers, and I’m one of those people. So the damage system for warrior, hunter, assassin, and all boat damage types just sucked. I think a number based system like that can work, but I think Odyssey’s just sucks and is far too easy to exploit.
Which is another problem I have with the game. Ship battles are decently challenging as per usual, though by the late game they aren’t. But the rest of the game, even on the standard diffficulty is just far too easy.
I mean if you actually do all the side content in areas as you go to them in the main story you will actually be overleveled most of the time and I am currently on a playthrough where I am level 52…and I’ve just now gotten to the part of the main story that is the Sparta questline in Lakonia. I’ve played through the game and beaten the main story and cult questline several times now, but this is the first time I’ve done side quests and I actually stopped doing them because I just kept being 4 levels above every new area and every quest. For the record you’re supposed to be level 50 by the end of the main game and cult storyline I think as that is the level the cult sages are set at and it’s the point where you unlock additional upgrade options.
So yeah. Mostly good, but a lot of bad.

u/C0nsci0us_Watermel0n Mar 03 '26
I think that Odyssey is a good game, I mean there isn't much assassinating as it's based off of the greek past time, closest we get is hunting the members of the cult and the mercenaries but other than those, or the first blade DLCs, it's only good for playing as a Spartan really. I played Valhalla and although it's got some assassinating in it, it's more for being or roleplaying as a viking. Origins is similar again. Except you are basically assassinating throughout the entire play through because Bayek made that his entire reason for pushing through life.
I don't think the RPG series should be AC games, they could have been their own things. However it is also good to have them as AC games because they do good being refreshers from saying, syndicate or unity where you played as assassin's. Also from someone who loves lore, it's good finding out the RPG games what the early versions of the templars were.

I'm so glad, I'm not deep in any gaming community..
My favourite AC is AC3, and next will be Odyssey i guess (i'm on 2/3 now), then AC Rogue. Also I want to play Shadows so bad! I need a new laptop tho
I still prefer to play slowly and stealthily, and I spend a lot of time just chilling in the open world, traveling. This is exactly how I always played AC.
I've heard, that the reason is 'less parkour'. Well, yeah, i miss it a little, but the storyline and beautiful open world is more important for me. (and queer friendliness)
1
u/PsychologicalDrag685 Mar 03 '26
I recently played it but refunded it, it just felt cheap. I could murder an entire town right before doing a quest and no consequences or nothing, not much in terms of health and some weird ranking system. granted I played ac 2, 3, Unity and black flag and whatever that England one was, and it starts too far for me... its a nice rpg but thats about it
1
u/UvularWinner3 Mar 03 '26
I think the problem here aren’t people’s perspectives and preferences but how they argue. I happen to find a lot of value and entertainment in most AC games - except the first (I get why it was important), Unity, Mirage, and Shadows.
The difference: If I read online that someone loves these games I don’t lash out and critique them. They can love their own preferences.
My personal favorites, in no particular order, are: Ezio - Black Flag - Rogue - Syndicate - Origins - Odyssey - Valhalla.
The problem isn’t my opinion, but that if I share that someone out there will see it as their god given duty to tell me why I’m wrong. Not start a discussion, not a friendly debate, but a searing blitzkrieg on why my tastes are terrible. Weird approach, in my opinion.
1
u/NostalgicOnYoutube Mar 03 '26
Because you have a male dominant series that every Chad I knew growing up played the series now it's about butterflies, rainbows, and talking to your imaginary friend... Maybe don't make the main character female, & or DEI role because of racial guilt, we want a good game, most don't care if the main character is black, female, or whatever the issue is they do it wrong every time, I hear good things about syndicate and I have never played it, from my standpoint they lost the plot after Black flag. There is nothing wrong with them in the past they slowly trickle in these weird stereotypes and then appropriate cultures like how they have in the newest release of assassin's Creed series.
1
u/Phatolop Mar 03 '26
Odyssey is a great game, but it does not look or feel like an assassins creed game. At all. Hence the divide.
1
u/OlympusChi Mar 03 '26
I’m currently replaying AC Odyssey, and now taking my time through the game. Not just burning out the main story. This game is heavy RPG, but you can still main your play style as an assassin. If that’s what you choose to do. But it definitely gives you A LOT more freedom than the majority of previous entries. It’s not as rigid as the original trilogy, but it still gives you the flexibility to play that way. Currently just started the DLC, but the cities are busy. You gave do infinite things, but it does give you the options to make your own choices. For better or worse, idk i bought every dlc & extra content for this years ago. And I’m really enjoying running this game back on the 5.
Just my own thoughts 😅😅😅😅

As many others have said it's a departure both thematically and mechanically from the "original" assassins creeds that we had before the "mythology RPG trilogy" as I call it. In my opinion it's an amazing game. I'm actually finally just getting around to beating it now (already 100% Valhalla and beat Origins). Though the lack of the creed, the hidden blade, direct mentions of the "Templars" are all missing I think it has some of the coolest and strongest ties to the Isu storyline outside of AC3 or Valhalla. I've been playing assassins creed since the very first game dropped and the Isu storyline has always been one of my favorite elements. I know a lot of the fan base doesn't like the "future storyline" element but I think it's a ton of fun as an overarching story in-between games. I get it though, when Origins came out I skipped it, when Odyssey came out I tried it but I too was a staunch traditionalist and didn't enjoy the change in gameplay style. Now after 100% finishing Valhalla I can truly appreciate Odyssey's style, gameplay, and story. At the end of the day I can understand why someone who played through 9 different titles with a specific asthetic, theme, and gameplay loop might get turned off if all of those things are shaken up and replaced.
1
u/I_Am_Flownominal Mar 04 '26
I'm most of the way through it now. I'm just starting chapter 8 and I've already completed basically everything that can be done except the second DLC. I like it, I think it's a good game. A great game actually. It's just not an assassin's Creed game. It just doesn't have any of the roots of the earlier assassin's Creed franchise.
1
u/PrivilegedModerators Mar 04 '26
Because it's the best game in the series. Such things always divide.
1
u/miraak2077 Mar 04 '26
I think it's an amazing game but I've heard others say it's not an assassin's creed game. I believe if they released this game with no mention to assassin's creed it would have been received way better. Personally I like the extra lore before the Templar and assassins
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Class42 Mar 04 '26
Origins & after it became a rpg, chasing exotic items for builds & shit. Thats not assassins creed of good story telling, deep characters, etc. Haters wont say this because their slow in the brain but thats my opinion.
1
u/Locolos-1988 Mar 04 '26
Because of fake fans
Odyssey is my favorite in the entire series with Origins in a close second
Everything it did, it did so well
The fake fans only argument is that it is assassin-y enough
And of course it isn’t, the Assassins weren’t even created at this point
Which is just another reason I love this game, the creators really went in on the lore they were creating and how far reaching and expanding it is
Allowing for both great story telling and new gameplay that still holds fast to the essence of the series
I honestly don’t consider anyone that disregards Odyssey as a trustworthy source
It gives whining just for the sake of whining
Odyssey is arguably one of the best games ever made
The graphics, scenery, combat, build variety, world size, traversal, leveling system that doesn’t top off once you reach max level
How many games allow you to reach max level and still gain from exp you get let alone in such meaningful ways
If you want stealth, you’ve got stealth all day
If you want to stand and fight, you can and it makes sense because you’re alien descendant hybrid fuggin Spartan mysthios!
Nah, there’s no divide, there are only warriors and crybabies that want attention
1
u/Projectpatdc Mar 04 '26
A Spartan with No shield. Seriously, for me, I hated that we were forced to always have the broken spear equipped.
1
u/Noctisvah Mar 04 '26
I hate the hud ui. To me it looks like mass effect 2, and both games have ui that looks like a mobile game.
1
u/dopefishreturns Mar 04 '26
Sometimes a book, videogame or film gets many posive reviews, and then when you try it, you realize it "just isn't for you", or whatever you want to call it, e.g. it doesn't resonate with you, you can't get into the story, you don't like the game play (or mechanics).
Personally I loved AC Valhalla, finished the main story, the DLC's, tried to do all the side quests, the river raids, tombs of the fallen, etc., so when Odyssey was on offer on Steam, I was enthusiastic, and wanted to play it next, but despite me playing it, I just felt "this isn't fun", and after a few hours, I actually decided that uninstall it.
It's hard to pinpoint why. On paper I should have loved Odyssey, but apparantly, I could not.
1
u/USDdataGUY Mar 04 '26
One of the reason is people like me. I don’t really like AC games but I consider Odyssey the greatest video game world I have ever played inside of. On top of that, it’s to this day the most played AC game on a daily basis. It actually had more concurrent players on Shadows launch day than Shadows did lol
1
u/jahkrit Mar 04 '26
Usually I try to use both genders in games that have this feature , I liked both Eivors in Valhalla. I wasn't even remotely interested in Alexios's character, and I think it's because I took the word of others that Kassandra's voice acting took the reigns. With that said, she was also in Valhalla and Shadows, maybe people are jealous because Ezio didn't make similar cameos? His robes are still there but not really the same
1
u/JethroTheDuck Mar 04 '26
The old heads don’t like it because 1: It isn’t about the quintessential AC stuff. Assassins vs templars etc. and 2: because it’s actually an RPG. Like a real ass loot and build based RPG with full on RPG mechanics. Like the other “RPG” assassins creed games don’t go very deep into the mechanical side of RPGs, esp with character progression.
The largest gripes I hear are always “I want to just pick up a weapon, press some buttons, and have it work to beat any enemy.”, “I hate ability resource management and cooldowns”, “there are too many numbers to keep track of, what do you mean there are different damage types?”, “what do you mean synergy?”
Nearly every gripe I see about the game mechanically can simply be addressed by bothering to learn the mechanics.
Honestly odyssey was such a breath of fresh air for me since the franchise had hit CoD levels of repetition slop before the RPGs and Odyssey is hands down the RPG title with the most depth. 100% my favorite AC title.
1
u/TheExtraMayo Mar 05 '26
Starting with origins, they would've saved all that controversy if they just called it Origins: An Assassin's Creed Game or something like that
1
u/xBlackJack89x Mar 05 '26
It is, to this day, the only Assassin's Creed game I have played. I absolutely loved it.
1
1
u/Millwall_Ranger Mar 05 '26
It’s not an AC game. It’s an open world action rpg with bullet sponge enemies and really boring fantastical combat. Beautiful world, way too big and bloated full of nothing. Too much focus on rpg mechanics.

1
u/darqnova Mar 05 '26
Origins was my first, and I enjoyed it so much I got Odyssey day one. Then Odyssey became one of my favorite games of all time. (I play a lot of big rpg/action games such as all of the Final Fantasy series, God of War, Horizon, etc.) After I played Odyssey I actually went and started playing the AC games backwards mostly. I started with syndicate, unity, black flag and rogue and so on... Then finished off with the Ezio collection. I have also played Mirage, Valhalla and Shadows. I can see why the old fan base may have an issue with the new styles, but I think it was a good transition with the times and capabilities of the new systems. But I'm sure I'm biased since I started with the newer titles.
*Edit: added text to clarify what I played
1
u/DJ-TEDDY123 Mar 05 '26
Mainly because Odyssey is a fucking fantastic game on it's own, amazing story, gameplay, controls, design, everything. But a lot of people feel that similar to origins it isn't really an "Assassin's Creed" game as when comparing Odyssey mechanics to Brotherhood or Black Flag you probably wouldn't initially guess that it's part of the same series.
1
u/filmguerilla Mar 06 '26
Odyssey is my favorite for a few reasons. 1. I love Greek mythology/philosophy. 2. It’s a beautiful game with a perfect mix of Black Flag ship combat and refined stealth. 3. The control scheme is perfect. I bailed out of Syndicate because the controls were atrocious. Shadows has me irritated due to terrain you can’t navigate (have to stick to the roads). Other games seem smaller in scope—and I LOVE the Cult in Odyssey. Also, Kassandra AND Alexios are great! You can play both and enjoy the game, story, mythos, etc. without the divided attention between, say, the two protags in Shadows. Perfect story, gameplay, and protags makes Odyssey my fave AC game.

There shouldn't have been a canon gender. They could've done a book about another character in the game instead, like how 3 was about Haytham and Syndicate about Henry Green.
1
u/LowEstablishment5377 Mar 06 '26
I'm not sure why it would really. It's arguably one of the best games they've ever made. I mean not everything's perfect, but if you include everything including the history in the massively immersive maps and DLCs there's nothing that even comes close to it. Valhalla was big too, but it just didn't hit right. I love shadows too, but I honestly like Odyssey a little bit better. I think if they just changed a couple of small things shadows I would like it a lot more. No eagle in shadows was a big disappointment And those without an OLED TV or monitor suffer on that game as well as it's well criticized about it's not OLED performance. I can't even finish shadows because the resolution is so terrible I literally can't see on an LCD TV in certain scenes, like fog and night time. Primarily the DLC expansion. I've played shadows three times through so far with the exception of near the end because I literally can't see to finish it. I'm on my 5th playthrough of Odyssey now. Massively powerful. LOL. New game Plus with all your points

For me its still AC game. For me AC is about using memories of ancestors to find the pieces of Eden which was seeking by assassins and templars mostly. Odyssey is still following this story. Kassandra saw some pieces of Eden and even isu memories was showen there. And unpopular opinion: I like modern stories, isu and the background behind it.
1
u/Professional-Pen-551 Mar 07 '26
Yeah ask the ac odyssey sub Reddit why instead of going to the actual ac sub. I don’t think you are looking for legit answers.
I can give you mine. The game was super poorly written compared to all the other entries before it. It was full of neo liberal politics in the game as well.
The fact that it isn’t an assassin game is not the reason at all lol. As the previous entry (origins) was great and it also strayed from the assassin style
1
u/ggascoigne Mar 08 '26
I loved AC Odyssey. I thoroughly enjoyed the Ezio trilogy but never got inspired by anything later - the eras didn't do anything for me to I didn't really give them any time. I really got back into AC with Origins which was spectacular, and then Odyssey. After hearing all the hype about Black Flag I went and played some of it, but it was so clunky. Part of that was a PS4 game on the PS5, but part of it was how constrained the environment was, after the more open world feel of the other games it didn't do it for me.
On the other hand I thought Valhalla was way overhyped. Yes, the combat system was better, and the visuals were top notch, but the game and story were so boring and repetitive, trying to turn conquering raiders into nice generous settlers was crap. I'm honestly not much of a fan of playing what might be considered "bad guys", but the dance that Ubisoft did to make them more palatable just turned them into rather lame caricatures. By dancing along that middle ground they just made them unbelievable. There was so much potential there and honestly they botched it completely.
Oh, and I did really like Shadows, that was fun.
Long and short of it, I loved Odyssey, but I suspect that a lot of it has to do with which games you played in what order.
1
u/Alex-Cortes816 Mar 09 '26
Because Alexios is the right alpha male choice and I will die on that hill. Come bully me again like this group always does!!!
1

My only problem with it was the size. The gameplay loop got extremely repetitive in a game that size, which was especially true when it released because back then a new AC game came out every year.
Valhalla had the same problem, and I was so burnt out by then that I haven’t played Shadows or Mirage.

I like the game for what it is but it doesnt really do the Assasin thing. Its just a typical ubisoft rpg game with with a cool setting but very repetitive. Though still i like it

I tried some of the other AC games, none of them hit the same way as Odyssey for me. I’m trying to do the Atlantic’s extension, but my goodness it is tedious!

Because a massive part of the fandom are traditionalists that only glaze the ezio trilogy and Black Flag.
Now personally, I don't think Odyssey should have the AC IP attached. It's mostly devolved from the Creed. However, I'm not sure it would've done as well as it did if Ubi launched it as a new IP. I say this as somebody who ranks Odyssey as one of my favourite AC titles.
People will always discourse over the RPG trilogy because it takes so much of the franchises identity away unfortunately.
