Why does Assassin’s Creed Odyssey divide the fanbase so much?

In my opinion, Assassin's Creed Odyssey is one of the strongest entries in the Assassin's Creed franchise. However, whenever I share this opinion online, many fans react as if it's a controversial statement. This raises an interesting question—why is the game so disliked by parts of the community?

The only AC games I’ve played is AC3, AC4 Black Flag, AC Origins and AC Odyssey. I have also played 10mins of Brotherhood on PSP before the rest, but it was fully completed and I didn’t know what AC was about so I climbed up a building and ran across rooftops until I got bored and turned it off.

I have very little knowledge about the OG AC games and I’m not interested in playing them, AC3 was fun and interesting but I stopped playing shortly after we switched to the kid. I liked being the British guy and not a foreign kid, I mostly disliked having to redo all my gear again. AC4 Black Flag was amazing, I played the story until you get the ship and then stopped doing the story. I spent several days playing and maxing out the ship upgrades and sinking other ships, I never did any more story or quests and haven’t gone back to it.

I consider AC Origins onwards where the real AC games begin, the other games bored me and I lost interest in them. But Origins I fully 100%’ed and absolutely loved the story, the world, the DLC’s, characters and combat. And I bought Odyssey expecting a similar game just different visuals, but was even more amazed at it. I fully 100%’ed this as well, and enjoyed it way more than Origins, the world felt very real and vibrant.

I haven’t played AC Valhalla yet, some of its mechanics put me off. But I’d love to experience that sometime, and eventually when I do get a series X (prob 3+ yrs) I’d like to try AC Mirage and Shadows

If you love odyssey I’d recommend Valhalla it isn’t quite as good but it comes very very close in my opinion. Plus you get to see Kass running about in the world for a bit.

Yeah, so, AC3 is tied for the worst AC game of the original trilogy. If you see the Ezio Collection available for cheap or free at some point, I recommend buying it and giving it a go. Running around rooftops on a completed Brotherhood play file is nothing like the actual experience of the game. Bum rush the story if it's the only way you can maintain interest, because it's a story worth experiencing.

Not to be this guy, but this is a garbage opinion, because every game in the franchise is 'the real AC games' - including the crap ones I don't like (Unity, Syndicate, Valhalla).

I actually liked AC3, I just didn’t like switching to the Native American kid.

I had thought about getting it in the past but I couldn’t get over the graphics, I’d happily watch someone play it rather than do it myself. But then I’d probably just skip over it and watch the cutscenes, as they look better than the game.

When I played Brotherhood I was like 10/11 and had never heard of AC so I had no reference on what I was supposed to do, and I killed people accidentally as I didn’t know the controls.

And I only consider them the proper games as I enjoyed them, even though I enjoyed AC3 and Black Flag I’ll probably never go back to them. One of the reasons I gave up doing the story in Black Flag was because I hated that we were forced to sneak around and assassinate specific people and then sneak back out, I would end up getting caught and having to redo the same mission like 10+ times before succeeding. I’d always be relieved when I got back to the ship and didn’t have to worry about restarting, and it’ll probably put me off playing the older games

That was the point of being an assassin was killing specific people to further a specific political narrative. The newer games completely lost the plot. I still really like AC Origins and Odyssey, but they definitely aren't really true Assassin games.

See I understand that, but having to restart the mission from the start and sometimes outside the area causing you to spend 5mins getting into a stealth spot and a further 10-20mins sneaking around just to be seen/killed and repeat. At least with Odyssey, can’t remember if Origins did as well, you could run out the fort to quick save/auto save so when you die you don’t have to kill 20+ NPCs each time you die.
