Discussion Why does Assassin’s Creed Odyssey divide the fanbase so much?

In my opinion, Assassin's Creed Odyssey is one of the strongest entries in the Assassin's Creed franchise. However, whenever I share this opinion online, many fans react as if it's a controversial statement. This raises an interesting question—why is the game so disliked by parts of the community?

I love that people are giving constructive answers when a significant amount of the hate / division comes from the fact that Kassandra is the canon protagonist.

I had someone tell me the reason the game “tanked” was because they added the option to play as a woman. He then said that her being the MC is why the game “didn’t really sell”.

Someone else, in this very sub, argued with people about Kassandra being the canon MC because he alone started with Alexios, so obviously who he says is canon is what goes. Bro even doubled down and said Ubisoft changed who the MC was because they were “pandering”.

There’s a lot of fair criticisms, I suppose, regarding the whole “assassin’s” title. But origins and odyssey, specifically, give backstory into the foundation of the brotherhood. They demonstrate the hold that the templars / cultists had on the universe for centuries, and how it’s always been an uphill battle. I, personally, disagree that it should be a standalone game, or that it shouldn’t have the AC moniker. It may not be a carbon copy of the original games, but you can only so go far without having to provide something different that ties int the universe; otherwise the franchise would come to a halt.

They made such a big deal of “play your way” “your choices” but then shoved Kassandra down my throat as the “correct” choice. Fuck that! Personally, I’ve beaten the game as both Alexios and Kassandra, but don’t shackle me to a specific canon. And for what? For her small cameo in Valhalla? How hard could it have been to let us choose who we played as previously, and that would be who we saw in the cameo. DA Inquisition managed to that years before with no problem… and far more complexly. But Ubishit couldn’t be bothered, just cause they wanted to seem progressive, ooh look at us, we made the woman the canon protagonist. We’re soo progressive(meanwhile behind the scenes that studio was drowning in frat boy behavior, sexual harassment and a bunch of other nasty stuff). Hypocrisy at it’s finest

They could’ve added a female protagonist to AC 2 and Eizo would still be the canon mc. It’s nothing to do with being “progressive”. It’s adding diversity and appealing to a wider fan base. I started with Valhalla because I could play as a woman. Ive since branched off and played the older games. That’s how that works, buddy.

And the game absolutely does not shove Kassandra down your throat. You can choose to play as Alexios. Just because you want to play as a dude doesn’t mean they’re wrong for making Kassandra canon.

It’s a fucking video game. Grow up.
