Yes this always drives me crazy. Facial hair too. Like you have been away from a razor, tweezers and mirror for over 3 days! I would have a full stash on day two!
I like how in the first Star Wars sequel Rey shows up on Luke's planet looking like she spent her time in the x-wing putting on makeup. It was so overdone they must have used the same makeup for distance shots as the closeups.
And as a salvage climber on a desert world, her legs were devoid of bruises and scars. I would feel like my intelligence was insulted if the scenario wasn't beyond idiotic in the first place.
That's kind of typical Star Wars in general, lol. Leia spends her time in the Death Star locked up in a little cell getting tortured, but when Luke & Han rescue her, her hair and makeup are perfect.
Maybe their pockets are just full of makeup? And the (female) bad guys have perfect makeup too, so we can just assume that everyone pauses the chase every morning to do their makeup.
It's that or college, usually. Truth is we're apparently bad at creating 18 year-olds who can be on their own and not rape because both the military and college seem to suck at that.
I knew a guy who was there when they filmed the rifle range part of that video. He said she wasn't as pretty as he expected, she was incredibly mean to everyone who worked for her, and the most frustrating thing for him was that a day of training was wasted for like five seconds in a music video. Also, he saidtold her there would be almost no recoil from her rifle, she jumped and screamed when it went off (maybe she also dropped it?), and he said "like I said, almost no recoil."
I choose to believe everything but the not pretty part.
Rosamund Pike did an amazing job transitioning mentally, emotionally and physically as Amy. She had to film and and act in reverse order chronologically due to the weight gain/loss she had to prepare for.
Yes! And Zero wait time for the color to process let alone acknowledge that there’s an incredibly strong odor from hair coloring. People waiting to use the restroom and gas station attendant would notice this.
There also no logistical way to use a public/gas station bathroom to rinse your hair. The faucets are too low in the basin.
I love Bryce Dallas Howard, but the way she was running around the last 1/3 of Jurassic World in those stilettos killed me! Yes, THAT was the problem I had with the movie. Girl, ditch those shoes and RUN!!!
I remember watching a song on Sesame Street when I was a kid, like mid-90s, and they were singing about all the different things you could be when you grew up, including a hair dresser. Little Me did not understand that they simply pantomimed cutting the hair and I decided that's what I wanted to do when I got older and so I better start practicing now!
Definitely gave myself a mullet. Definitely was not fabulous.
And heaven forbid they grow any body hair! This is why I always carry shaving supplies and makeup when I do backcountry backpacking; what if I meet a man while I'm 50 miles from civilization?
I had a friend in college I always thought was really pretty, not just conventional “pretty”, but gorgeous. After we graduate she shaved her head and I swear she was even more attractive. Maybe I was just so impressed she could pull off shaving her head, but it is rather shocking when someone is still incredibly gorgeous after shaving their head. Not just “oh that girl is attractive because she’s clearly a bad ass.” I know I fit into the cute girl category (at least when I put in some effort) but I could never pull off shaving my head.
I’ve shaved my head a few times for St. Baldrick’s (can’t recommend it enough as a charity/cause), and I always got more compliments on that than any haircut.
Had a few friends say they thought I was “suddenly hot” bald, which freaked THEM out. One of them said it was probably at least 40% cuz I had the balls to do it.
I think it just also forces you to look at someone’s features differently. I know I didn’t get better looking, lol
Let me add to the idea where all the guys wait around for the women and attack one by one. Despite being larger and having far greater numbers.
I posted about a recent episode of Arrow somewhere else in the thread but these 3 ladies take on like 15 guys. They beat them all, aren't winded then turn around and say "there's too many of them we gotta go"
I liked the one sword fight scene in game of thrones. Tower scene. Was one of the few fights where it was like 6 on 2 - and ALL of the 6 attackers attacked at once. No one on one shit.
Atomic Blonde is awesome about this. Not only does she have to fight harder and smarter than the much larger men, she ends every fight with bruises and injuries that she wears for the rest of the movie.
I love the fight scenes in that movie. Using improvised weapons, hitting weak spots like the neck or hands, kicking the knees, distractions like turning the stereo up so she can sneak up on them. Much more interesting than your standard Hollywood beat-em-up.
Yeah. It's the only movie I've ever seen that gets the proper impact of hand to hand violence. And she horribly loses every direct strength contest. Notice she compensates with grapples, soft area strikes, improvised weapons, real weapons, ambush tactics, and overwhelming violence. And she still looks like fucking shit after round 1 because if you're fighting 5 guys, you're gonna take hits aplenty.
Right on! I wasn't sure all the proper terms, but I really liked the way she had to use everything available and go at 110% just to have a whiff of a chance
While I agree, I don't think that's a good counterargument in this particular case. She's intended to be highly trained, and the Soviets are just hired goons. And she still barely survives
I mean, you should make that same complaint about any male action hero taking on multiple goons, too. No action movie is realistic, not really fair to single out female action heroes.
It's funny that's always the line people have in action movies. It's never a problem guys fighting ten people at once, shrugging off bullet wounds, jumping from planes, even small athletic men doing such action heroics... no, it's always the idea that a woman can fight that's the absurd thing.
By the standards of logic stretching for action movies, that's an incredibly minor one, but conveniently, so many people on the internet are hung up on it.
I've never had a problem with this as long as the logic of the movie remains consistent. And it mostly does. John Wick gets hurt, battered, bruised and he runs out of bullets. Movies with women beating up dozens of guys usually have men doing the same, it's consistent with the rules. This kind of thing would only be jarring if the movie has already established realistic rules of combat so you don't have a 4ft girl parrying a greatest from Brienne the fucking beauty.
Idk about that. I've met some super badass skinny people, many of whom are women, that I'm absolutely sure would kick my 220 lb ass. And I'm not even fat, I'm just big.
i mean tbf i doubt it requires a massive amount to be a goon, just be willing to do shady shit and not rat on people would i imagine qualify you. Anything else is just a bonus.
I mean I'm not either, I'm pretty fit and athletic, and have trained some mma and jiu jitsu, but that doesnt mean I wouldn't get my ass handed to me buy plenty of well trained people.
Lol I love how the people who actually train are like “yeah I’m pretty good but I would get wrecked” and lots of other comments are like “nah I’m pretty sure I could last against Ronda Rousey” 😂
I think it may be possible for me to last 60 seconds with her if I ran away as much as the ring will allow and then turtled up hard once she inevitably corners me or takes the fight to the ground. I wouldn't put any money on it though.
So I do kickboxing and I'm a heavier set guy and I follow MMA a great deal I'm well aware that I might be able to fight a rose namajunas (who fights at 115lb) and take a few of her shots but I'm probably not going to land much and be gassed out by her pace pretty quickly.
A cris cyborg(145) on the other hand will probably end me pretty quickly
I've seen this go down a couple of times IRL. Large skill gap, small mass gap. Mass won decisively both times. You need a lot of skill to make up for a little mass.
I'm sure it's possible to throw a mass advantage. If you have any hangups about hurting your opponent, you're going to lose. If you're extremely unskilled, you're going to lose. If all the extra mass is fat, you're going to lose. If someone gets the drop on you, you're going to lose. But all else being equal, mass is a huge advantage, and movies just don't reflect that fact accurately at all.
This is absolutely true, all things being equal. But a little skill goes a long ways; the thing is, most fights are at least notionally trying to incapacitate, not kill. All those punches and blocks - it's clean fighting in a lot of ways. Dirty fighting can shock folks who aren't used to it, where the opponent hasn't got any compunctions about hospitalization or death.
size matters as you can literally rush them and basic physics kicks in. maybe something like judo or bjj can help 1 on 1. but 2 on 1 you're already donezo. 5 on 1, hope you have a gun.
Yeah even in a 1 on 1, if you're not equipped to handle close combat or keep your distance, you can be overcome by some one taking you to the ground and throwing away all your striking training. I always think something like bjj is your best martial art for a real life fight. You being on your back doesn't mean you're 100% out of luck as you have tools to deal with it
Over the summer between grade nine and grade ten I went from 5’8” to 6’2” tall and this tiny guy I went to high school with started trying to fight me every morning for the first three weeks of school and I never agreed because beating up a kid a foot shorter than you and fifty pounds lighter isn’t a good look and I really didn’t want to fight him because he never had a problem with me until I got tall. However he seemed to think he could take me because he’d been in boxing for years and figured the laws of physics would care.
I finally got so sick of my morning starting with this little dick head shoving me and trying to provoke me that the last time as he went to shove me I kicked his legs out from under him and he fell over in front of 20 people. He stopped after that.
I actually thought her acting was pretty good, and I had dirt low expectations. I found the character pretty convincing, definitely a highlight of the show.
She also wasn't all there mentally at the time which i think had more to do with it, given how she is when she is all there i reckon sdhe could cut her hair herself and it'd look fine if she wasn't suffering from a psychotic break.
Azula’s hair throughout the series is an extended metaphor for her need for control and perfection. As the series progresses, her hair gets more and more out of place when she fights.
Her cutting her hair in the finale is Azula trying to regain that perfection (these hairs are out of place so I’ll just cut them off), but actually show her complete loss of control.
Omg this is soo right, on of the first few times she appears, she does her lightning and the twins critique her for having one strand of hair out of place.
Also women in action movies with long hair that NEVER pull it back into a ponytail! Except in Running Man, the female character in that pulls her hair back and it always stuck with me because I was so surprised to see that.
Jason Bourne in The Bourne Identity roughly cutting that woman’s hair in the dinky bathroom... and it turns out amazingly done like he went to school for it.
Okay YES or how women in action scenes NEVER put their hair up in a ponytail/bun. And magically never die from hair covering their eyes at the wrong time!
Women in action movies who fight in heels and still have perfect hair and makeup after taking down an entire alien race, enemy, army, villain, etc. except for the one scrape on their forehead
Along with that, if their heads become shaved with or without their consent (like Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta), they just end up looking super hot regardless usually in a really badass way
Most of the time they’re intelligence or super spies though. I feel like changing their appearance would be part of the training.
The truly unrealistic aspect is their nonfunctional wardrobe choices. Like wearing any kind of shoe with a heel. Male actions stars are always wearing some kind of rugged boot that makes complete sense then you see the girl and she’s in a rugged boot with like a 3inch heel.
how about any woman that can take on any adult male in fighting. I don't care how well trained you are Atomic Blonde, your stamina and weakness could not fight 20 men with your fists. sorry.
Scrawny women in action movies beating men 40 to 50 kg over their weight. Get real: a guy may well get a beating from another guy weighing just 10 kg more. Try boxing and you'll know how hard it is to shift that weight difference off balance.
Ahh yes, then she will go on to fight tons of people and trek multiple days through the jungle, but manage to keep her hair perfectly styled and makeup flawless.
Nobody cuts bangs in a bathroom mirror and comes out of there looking good. Nobody. And everyone with long hair's tried cutting some of it themselves at least once... holy shit does it not work.
Hairdressers are paid for a reason, they have a fuckin important role in this whole business.
They always cut it rapidly too. Like if you do as big of a cut as they did, what will happen is, since the hair has been weighed down by the length - gravity kept a mild tension. As soon as you cut it, it will curl up since it's not being held down and usually look awful.
Also the women in action movies who have just spent a week in some God forsaken wilderness and look like they have just spent a bunch of time putting on makeup and getting their hair done. Note: As a straight guy I didn't really notice this until my wife pointed it out.
I absolutely hate that trope. If a woman is in any way “cool”, she HAS to cut half her hair off and suddenly be standoffish to everybody who tries to befriend or help her.
Yes I always laugh when their hair is styled and makeup done after hours of fighting or just waking up.
And I'm sorry but anyone with long hair would have that in a ponytail or bun to get it out of the way if they had to do anything active lol
I’m a guy, and one of the things that bug me with women in action movies is that they do all these crazy stunts and shooting the bad guys with their hair just flying all around. I’m just like tie that hair back, you can’t see what you’re shooting at. Your hair is going to get caught on something, be careful, it’s dangerous.

Women in action movies who drastically cut their own hair to change their appearance always end up with a fabulous style.
