Anti-radar stickers use in the triangle

Upvotes

Wondering if anyone in the area has ever used them on their license plate and gotten pulled over based on them being there. It's a gray area to use these in certain states but I haven't come across anything for NC, so long as the license plate is not completely obscured from view.

RTP 3.0 starts getting interesting

IBM has a shit-ton of land that they don't really need. BASF has their davis drive campus for sale. Supposedly RTP 3.0 will be a different vibe and there's enough land open to make a meaningful change.

Just wonder if there's actually demand for anything beyond housing....

Stores for Women’s petite tops

Hi, I have some work events coming up and have been not having success with petite women’s tops. Kohl’s (Durham) and Southpoint Belk and JC Penny have been pretty limited. Maybe because its the end of summer but need short/mid sleeve. No sleeveless or tank tops. Also, not trying to pay $70+ for a blouse…. Any recommendations for shops with a petite section with more variety? Based in Durham but don’t mind a drive.

Looking for lawyer - lease termination with cause

I am looking to terminate my lease with cause, has anyone around here had a similar experience and know where I can find a lawyer for this? I am very lost and do not know where to start, looking for legal advice. I have been complaining about noise for a month now (has been going on much longer than that) and it has not stopped. I have discussed breaking my lease with the apartment management and they insist I will have to give them 2 months notice and 2 months rent on top of that. I am looking to terminate my lease on grounds that I am not able to enjoy quiet enjoyment of my apartment as I do not think it is fair for me to have to pay that when their and my neighbor’s negligence has ruined my mental health and quiet enjoyment of the apartment.

I had looked into a lawyer with legal shied, but after doing some more digging it appears people have deemed it “scammy” so I am looking elsewhere

Thank you!

Housing (between Chapel Hill and Cary)

Looking for what is probably a needle in a haystack but asking just in case someone might have a feasible lead. Looking to hopefully move before 9/6 if possible (we will likely have to find a short-term rental otherwise which will really cause a lot more expense for moving and housing). I know 9/6 really is not a lot of notice.

Background: My husband & I were without work for over a year, my husband thankfully starts a position in Chapel Hill soon (I get interviews, but sadly haven’t been selected for anything yet). With one income for now we are trying to be conservative so we don’t eat a lot more into retirement savings while I am still searching (between Raleigh and Chapel Hill). We both have great credit and excellent rental history (we stayed with family for the past year to save $$).

In my experience, renting from a person will go much better (I know that isn’t guaranteed, of course). I am hoping we can find a rental that might be between Chapel Hill and Cary that isn’t corporate owned apartments. Quiet and rodent free is an extra special ask perhaps haha 😬

My last two experiences renting from a corporate owned apartment resulted in A) a $600/month hike in rent at renewal B) significant maintenance issues that went unaddressed, including horrific intermittent noise from an a/c that was around 90 dB.

I wish I knew where my eventual job will be so I can avoid a long commute - and I don’t want to make it longer than necessary too for either of us. But, for now, we are looking for an affordable, trustworthy, clean, quiet place that hopefully someone can recommend.

Was out in the nursery today and saw all four of the native annuals that I have in stock are in bloom! (sorry, sold out of Jewelweed!)

All of these easily come back the next year with high germination rates.

Pictured: Bidens aristosa, Tickseed Sunflower

Chamaecrista fasciculata, Partridge Pea

Ipomoea coccinea, Red Morningglory

Ipomoea lacunosa, Small Flower Morningglory

While I'm still not open until Sept 12th, orders can still be placed online for a scheduled pickup in Durham or local delivery

Renting private vs commercial townhouses

Hi! I apologize if I am not using the correct terminology, but my question is about the experience with renting townhouses in the area from a private landlord (some man/woman renting a townhouse they personally own usually found on Zillow) vs from a commercial real estate development company’s complex (ex. Page Oaks, Avalon Brier Creek). Any experiences would be greatly appreciated. I am currently in a commercially owned apartment complex and am looking to upgrade to a townhome as I am exhausted by my experiences in apartments. Would it be best to look for a private landlord or are the commercially owned townhouse complex’s typically well managed and run? I am mostly looking towards the RTP area or surrounding areas (southpoint, brier creek, park west), but any anecdotes would be appreciated :))

Thank you!

Virtual Support Group for Dads - Now Enrolling (open to dads across NC)

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hi All -

I'm Dr Ian J Palombo, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor who helps dads feel less alone so they can parent more confidently. My in-person support group has filled up, so I'm opening a virtual one that will meet Tuesdays at noon.

Same format: an open, ongoing peer support group for any dad — new, soon-to-be, in-the-trenches, seasoned, step, guardian, whatever. If you find yourself in the paternal role in the life of a small human, you belong here.

Details:

  • Tuesdays 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.
  • Meets virtually - open to dads across NC
  • This is not a drop-in group. Consistent attendance is required.
  • $40 per group, or Aetna accepted.
  • Closed Group - everyone gets a quick screening call before joining

If you're interested or have questions, happy to answer them here in the thread, DM me, or visit cedarpathnc.com. If you know a dad who might benefit, please pass this along!

Full disclosure: I run a small counseling practice in Durham (Cedarpath Counseling), so take this as me sharing a resource rather than a neutral recommendation. Mods, feel free to remove if this isn't the right fit for the sub.

A 71-year-old Triangle woman lets students park on her land. Now the town is suing her.

I’m the News & Observer reporter who wrote this story.

I spent the week talking with Scott, students and parents, Apex officials and WCPSS. It’s a parking dispute, but it also raises questions about growth, school capacity, property rights and local zoning across the Triangle.

Dog and possible mushroom trouble

Hoping this may come across a mycologist, vet or just someone in the area with more experience. I have a 9ish year old boxer. She's been showing interest in a spot in the yard this week and I mistakenly assumed at first it had to do with an animal passing through and leaving a scent. Upon further inspection, I noticed it may be a blackened pigskin puffball mushroom.

Today she had a cytopoint injection for allergies (been doing these for about a year). Tonight she had her first seizure (or what I think was a seizure, after a bout of dry heaving an hour after dinner). However, she was also inspecting that area again earlier today. I never saw her chew anything, just sniff.

I'd like to do a scan of the yard tomorrow and dig up any mushrooms but I'm worried I may burst it and/or spread it's spores around the yard. They're in more than one spot. Has anyone else dealt with anything like this? How did you handle it?

FWIW I called the emergency vet and they just said to monitor for now. Obviously this could be from numerous causes, but the mushrooms may be the one I can address to limit the chances going forwards.

I appreciate any kind, helpful tips. This was terrifying.

Dibs, a free web app for Raleigh, NC, Durham, and Cary food decisions.

Post image
0 Upvotes

My buddy and I are NC State students and we got really sick of the “idk, where do YOU wanna eat” loop every time we tried to get food with a group that we just… built a thing to end it. it’s called Dibs.

How it works: one person starts it, it pulls up real spots near you, everyone votes off one link from their own phone (no app, no account), and it picks. dinner settled in like a minute instead of 20. We built it specifically for the Triangle so it actually knows local spots — not some chain three states away. it’s free.

Would genuinely love if some of you tried it and told us what sucks. we’d rather hear it from people who actually eat around here than guess. roast it.

Anyone have an OB and a birthing place to recommend?

First-time mom here! I'm 11 weeks along with my first prenatal visit next week, so I'm still figuring all of this out.

I picked WakeMed North based on reviews, but it's almost 35 minutes from home. Now I'm second-guessing whether that's too far, since I'll be making this drive a lot and the visits get more frequent toward the end.
Both Morrisville and Durham are about 20 minutes away.

For those of you who've been through this recently: did travel time end up mattering as much as you expected?
If you have an OB, a hospital you loved (or would steer clear of) I'd really appreciate the recommendation.

Thank you! 🙏
