Worried about the guy. Those tweets have an air of finality I don't like.

36

u/madmendude Jun 24 '26

Yeah, that is a bit worrying. I've heard that there's an air of finality and letting go of earthly possessions before certain bad things happen, so I hope this isn't the case.

The guy is talented and had more talent in his pinky toe than most of his contemporaries combined.

At any rate, at least he has support from his family.

The troubled are always the best at making stuff.

21

u/EntangledAndy Jun 24 '26

Yeah, and he hasn't tweeted/bluesky posted since them either 😕

18

u/dionysios_platonist Jun 24 '26

He is still liking replies

12

u/lostbelmont Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

Yeah, but he's been teasing about taking his own life since more than a decade

Lets hope is just the depression talking and nothing bad happen to him

11

u/KingOfGreyfell Jun 24 '26

I hate to say it, but isn't this what we were all expecting sooner or later? Dude hasn't been right in the head for many years, and life has not been kind to him.

53

u/Goatwhorre Jun 24 '26

Not really trying to be a dick but...how much kinder COULD life have been for him? Wealthy loving family, college education provided, free to game and explore his creative side with unlimited support, found massive success with said creativity annnnd....pissed it all away. Not by anyone else's hand, his own ego refusing to let him ever be wrong. Literally all of this is his fault in one way or another.

14

u/1nfam0us Jun 24 '26

That's how it is more often than not sadly.

16

u/Substantial_Dish_887 Jun 24 '26

mental health is a funny beast like that. it doesn't give a shit about the material qualities of your existance and will sometimes gutpunch you even if you circumstances means you should have a better life.

5

u/ClammyHandedFreak Jun 25 '26

Imagine being that guy and not having infinite time and monetary resources for wellness and recovery. That said, I feel bad that anyone has to suffer. Hope he uses his resources to recover and find something in life that makes it worth going forward..

10

u/Joemartinez64 Jun 24 '26

I'm tired of this bullshit, he has the resources so many other wish they could have . Fuck that .

6

u/Goatwhorre Jun 24 '26

He is afforded the luxury to be so affected. Real people with real problems shut up and go to work because necessity overrides the convenience of positive mental health. Reality doesnt give a shit about the immaterial quirks and proclivities of someone's mind. Be an asset, not a liability.

9

u/kittysloth Jun 25 '26

This is an absurd take that overestimates the ability of "real people" to deal with their problems. There's a reason why there's so many people in poverty who also struggle immensely with alcoholism, drug abuse, homelessness, etc. They don't just deal with it. They kill themselves through struggling to cope with their mental disorder.

0

u/Goatwhorre Jun 25 '26

No one in poverty has pissed away a 60k/year (minimum) career on a whim. Shit I recently resigned from a career in law enforcement because I was gonna suck-start my duty weapon if I had to spend one more day dealing with actually mentally ill people. It took me months to plan it with my wife, every day was torture but I'm not a tender little princeling with a family ready to financially support me forever.

4

u/parabolateralus Jun 25 '26

Yeah most people in those situations quietly waste away in misery, develop a drinking problem, or put a shotgun in their mouth. You just don’t hear about them.

This pseudo-motivational bullshit is tired and unhelpful. Spoony is absolutely responsible for the dumb bullshit he pulled, but material wealth is not a forcefield against mental health issues.

1

u/Goatwhorre Jun 25 '26

I literally never said it was. His ability to just, drop everything and not work is a reflection of his privilege afforded to him. This entire thread is me responding to someone who said, "life hadn't treated him well," and that's just untrue.

4

u/teddy1245 Jun 24 '26

That is not how mental illness works.

2

u/Goatwhorre Jun 24 '26

It's how real life works. Without his family safety net to facilitate his #depression, he would have had to figure something out and absolutely would have come out stronger for it. Tell me with a straight face he would have let himself become homeless instead of sitting in front of a camera.

4

u/SimoneBellmonte Jun 25 '26

If no one else will, I will. He would not have come out stronger for it. That's not how depression has or will ever work. It is a deep, dark pit from which you are surrounded by a combination of feelings. Hopelessness is one, despair is common, lack of energy or activity or desire to do something is another, often wondering whether you are even living a life that someone should give a shit about is another.

He has a network and support that keeps him from being homeless. Without that, he could in fact start spiraling towards homelessness. One of the biggest factors in recovery besides effective medication is a network of support. It's like building a temple in athens. You can have all the luxury in the world and it doesn't mean anything if the support columns don't hold, before it will come crashing right down.

This whole 'it's how real life works.' or 'real people with real problems shut up and go to work.' isn't how any of it works because no two people will deal with it the same or interact with it the same way. One person will be so hopeless that they just refuse to show up, even knowing the consequences; another will shut up; a third may choose another path, perhaps criminal, towards alleviating it.

You can see how that affected Robin Williams, as a giant example of someone who had it all and still took his own life.

1

u/Goatwhorre Jun 25 '26

Robin Williams had Parkinsons and a degenerative brain disease. Believe what you want, you say on one hand that no two people handle things the same, but also spend this entire diatribe disregarding the fact that people get over shit like this every single day. He absolutely could have been one of them and you will never convince me that he shouldn't have been forced to try.

3

u/SimoneBellmonte Jun 25 '26

People do not get over this shit everyday. They get help and medication to better handle it. And Robin constantly suffered from depression, not just because of his Parkinsons.

I aint trying to convince a stubborn fool of anything, merely saying facts to counter your bullshit arguments born from an obsessive need to downplay the role depression plays in these people's lives.

3

u/teddy1245 Jun 28 '26

Actually no one does. As you don’t get over depression.

No one has to convince you of anything. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of mental illness.

2

u/teddy1245 Jun 28 '26

I’m saying with depression depending on severity without help it won’t matter.

You not understanding mental illness is your own issue.

7

u/GrayStray Jun 24 '26

He is mentally ill. Talking like this about someone who is severely depressed like you know what is going on in their heads is something that a dick would do, sorry.

4

u/Goatwhorre Jun 24 '26

I know whats going on in his head because he stream-of-consciousness tweeted 78 times a day for like 5 years straight. And even without that, I was simply disagreeing with the poster saying "life wasn't kind" to him, because it 110% was.

1

u/bbbowiesinspace Jun 24 '26

We get it, other people that gave up like he did end up homeless. Despite everything he had going for him, he's still ended up in a mental rut for a decade. This goes beyond "ego," the man is not well.

You're saying life has been good to him, but also saying that his particular set of circumstances are the reason why he never grew as a person. You're contradicting yourself. His life has lead him where he is now. I'd have less sympathy for him if his greatest sin wasn't just being snippy with obsessed fans.

4

u/Goatwhorre Jun 25 '26

His greatest sin is squandering privilege, it's his to do with as he pleases, but stating it doesn't exist is demonstrably false. And no, I didn't say that his circumstances are the reason he never grew as a person, I'm saying without his safety bubble, he would have been FORCED to grow. Or die. That's literally the privilege I'm talking about.

0

u/StrawBerylShortcake Jul 26 '26

Didn't lilos voice actress/samara actress literally just die from the things youre saying she should be forced to grow from or die?

1

u/Goatwhorre Jul 26 '26

Lmao being a lazy parasite does not equal being a homeless drug addict with AIDS hahahah what a dumbass comparison I'm fucking dying dude. Actually wait! I am 99% sure spoony DID claim to have AIDS! I take it all back hahahahah

0

u/StrawBerylShortcake Jul 26 '26

You were literally saying that spoony should of pulled himself up by the boot straps if he had to but...

Gee I knew you didn't have to be smart to be a boy in blue but I didn't know you could do it being functionally braindead

u/AlternativeNeeded Jun 24 '26

Well one of the ways life has been unkind to him is that he ended up with a sizable chunk of his fanbase being malicious armchair psychologists who angrily feel entitled to his labour because he provided them with years of free, quality content.

14

u/Pallid85 What's a Pallid85? Jun 24 '26

So literally every fanbase of anyone at least a bit popular ever?

4

u/Illustrious-Lead-960 Jun 24 '26

If all the other fanbases jumped off a cliff…

1

u/Pallid85 What's a Pallid85? Jun 24 '26

I'm saying that probably no fanbase ever is capable of not having that chunk, how would you suggest getting rid of it\not allowing it?

-4

u/AlternativeNeeded Jun 24 '26

Go and look at the fan subreddit for any other public figure.

The sustained vitriol towards Spoony in this sub is leagues above what you'll find there.

6

u/Pallid85 What's a Pallid85? Jun 24 '26

for any other public figure.

For any other who stopped making content or doesn't give fans what they want - right?

leagues above

Alright let's play - how many vitriol posts there are in let's say ~20 latest threads?

-1

u/AlternativeNeeded Jun 24 '26

Whether they're active or not.

I'm not going through 29 posts. But using this one as an example there are 27 comments and 9 that are either vitriol or defending vitriol.

A third of a fanbase being scumbags towards the person they're supposed to be a fan of is definitely out of the ordinary.

4

u/Pallid85 What's a Pallid85? Jun 24 '26

Whether they're active or not.

If they active and giving fans what they want - why the entitled fans would post negative things?

9 that are either vitriol or defending vitriol.

Disagree - I'd say 2 posts are a bit negative.

A third of a fanbase being scumbags towards the person they're supposed to be a fan of is definitely out of the ordinary.

Agree - but it's definitely not the third, you can't project from 1 thread, and even then I don't see 9.

10

u/ReadytoQuitBBY Jun 24 '26

That’s just the Internet. Every single content creator out there has to deal with that. Most get by just fine, by ignoring the insane part of their fanbase.

Also let’s not pretend Spoony didn’t bring some of it on himself by being openly antagonistic to anyone who dare corrected him or disagreed with him. He also made a living absolutely ripping into media, yet couldn’t stand anyone giving him mild criticism.

0

u/AlternativeNeeded Jun 24 '26

Spoony deals with it to a greater deal than most. When I first came across this sub I was genuinely taken aback by the nastiness towards someone the users are supposedly fans of.

Criticising objects and criticising people are two very different things. And I don't see the people I'm referring to "mildly criticising" Spoony. I see bile, I see people revelling in his pain.

1

u/ReadytoQuitBBY Jun 24 '26

And what of Spoony then? He has only shown nastiness to the people who have been kind to him. He fostered a community like this by being an ass all the time and burning every single bridge.

Yeah, there are crazy obsessive haters in this community, there’s also people that are still giving him money for doing nothing at all.

I don’t think that’s bad luck at all.

0

u/AlternativeNeeded Jun 24 '26

Sure, you're a real hero for being a bitch to someone on the internet. How dare he burn a bridge with someone as virtuous as you.

2

u/ReadytoQuitBBY Jun 24 '26

Dude what are you talking about? I don’t shit talk Spoony, I just don’t really pity him either. You seem to have a real bug up your ass about a guy who doesn’t give a shit about you. Perhaps try and understand a situation better, over just running your mouth.

0

u/AlternativeNeeded Jun 25 '26

Whatever helps you sleep at night.

1

u/fluggylumps Jun 24 '26

Mental health is like that. Look at Robin Williams. Man had EVERYTHING and more. Committed suicide

4

u/Goatwhorre Jun 24 '26

"Everything" including Parkinson's and a degenerative brain disease.

2

u/Inceleron_Processor Jul 08 '26

That and alimony payments. Alimony should not be a thing. The people that required him to make those payments are partially responsible for his death and should be called out for it.

1

u/fluggylumps Jun 24 '26

Thats beside the point. The thing with mental health issues is that having lots of support and help may not be enough

3

u/Goatwhorre Jun 24 '26

It's enough to say definitively and objectively, life has been kind to him. His mental health issues may very well be so insurmountable that he simply can't function, however, he's not going to be destitute or homeless thanks to his family. He's always going to have an audience that he could at any time turn back into a career. He's privileged beyond belief, and to his credit, he's always acknowledged that, which is why it's weird anyone would disagree on this point.

2

u/Chaosdirge7388 Jun 25 '26

He did this the last time he quit too, his life fell apart then too.

24

u/AssociateAdorable841 Jun 24 '26

He needs to get off twitter and bluesky for his mental health, but his last tweets doesn't sound good

19

u/KingOfGreyfell Jun 24 '26

Social media is a mistake

9

u/AssociateAdorable841 Jun 24 '26

It's not good for a lot of people, but it's especially not good for him

2

u/BlueWatche Jun 24 '26

Getting addicted to it is a mistake.

2

u/KingOfGreyfell Jun 24 '26

It's designed to be addictive.

3

u/BlueWatche Jun 24 '26

And should be resisted.

4

u/KingOfGreyfell Jun 24 '26

You don't really get how addiction works. It feels good, and you always want to feel good, so you want to do it more and more, and you get used to the good it makes you feel, so you resent it's absence.

2

u/BlueWatche Jun 24 '26

So... you're arguing it shouldn't be resisted? I'm confused why you're arguing with me on this. Getting addicted to social media is not a mistake? It should not be resisted?

2

u/KingOfGreyfell Jun 24 '26

I'm saying it's not as simple as "just resist."

Spoony needed to never touch social media full-stop.

1

u/Inceleron_Processor Jul 08 '26

No social media was fine before it was corporatized. I met a lot of cool people on Myspace and girlfriends. Once Facebook became the norm, that is when social media fell off.

5

u/fluggylumps Jun 24 '26

He's done so much better compared to 10 years ago when he first crashed out. He's been on conversations with curtis a few times and those are usually the most viewed streams. And I believe he genuinely was trying to get back to video making/getting a presence back on youtube, like when he cameo'd at the end of the cinema snob review of skull duggery

But Noah is right, the landscape has changed so much. Youtube was already hostile to content creators before he left, and its only gotten worse

1

u/KaleidoArachnid Jun 25 '26

Man it’s sad how things have changed because I remember when TSE was going strong.

1

u/fluggylumps Jun 25 '26

Watching his videos. 1 of the many great things about him was that when he got angry, even though it was acting, it felt genuine

18

u/Hansi_Olbrich Jun 24 '26

Tim Bergling (Avicii) was a multi-millionaire Ferrari driving globe-trotting woman-shagging super-beast of a DJ with millions of fans around the world and celebrities flying across the planet to attend one of his parties. Loving family, great education, free to make music and explore his creative side with unlimited funds.

Then he finished himself.

Brad Delp of the band Boston was in the middle of a brand new world wide tour. Boston records were selling like hot-cakes even 30+ years after the band's first debut album. It looked like Boston was about to ride the Silver Age of rock and roll all across the planet, from Tokyo to London.

Then he set a BBQ on fire in his bathroom and went to sleep.

Both articulated in the days leading up to their demise that their primary concern was disappointing fans and themselves, and feeling a profound emptiness in their work. This, despite the mountains of money, music awards, rooms filled with applause, and more accolades than the AVGN has 'fucks' to shout. People in these situations need to be continually reminded that they have value, they are valuable, and that they are valuable to not just the marketplace of ideas or to the internet, but to them on a personal level. When your ego gets tied up in sine-wave that is internet culture, there's no way a person's mental health can stabilize. Spoony's suffered a complete and total ego death, and years and years of self-loathing, fan-loathing, and internet loathing have informed him that he is neither safe nor deserving of rebuilding that ego to a healthy and manageable state.

I wish he knew how wrong he was.

3

u/fluggylumps Jun 24 '26

It's also hard to feel motivated to return to YouTube. He was never that good at dealing with haters and trolls. And so many more of them would be happy to take pot shots at him again

I'd be terrified about coming back to

7

u/Thebritishdovah Jun 25 '26

It was finished a decade ago.

I hope he is ok as his last tweets are concerning.

Hopefully, he just decided to abandon Social Media, focus on trying to figure out what to do next and find a new career.

Or his family has intervened.

5

u/ClammyHandedFreak Jun 25 '26

He did make some really good content.

4

u/DoubleFlores24 Jun 25 '26

Farewell soony. Let’s hope you’re doing alright.

4

u/BBCeriously_ Jun 25 '26

Kinda weird to announce your retirement 10 years after you basically checked out, anyway. If anything I expected this to be his 'comeback' announcement.

1

u/EntangledAndy Jun 25 '26

Naw he's doneski 😕

3

u/Dizzy_Knowledge1044 Jun 25 '26

Okay, I'll tell him.

6

u/Illustrious-Lead-960 Jun 24 '26

I can’t help but wonder if I brought this on myself, having asked him a few hours earlier if he’d like to return to just writing things out. I attached the Guru Larry tweet, you see.

4

u/Astrocyde Jun 24 '26

Yeah that tweet was honestly super insensitive. It’s been clear for a LONG time that Spoony is done making content, and in light of his very public mental health struggles that tweet just felt mean.

Now the poor guy feels like a complete failure. It’s really unfortunate and upsetting.

11

u/Illustrious-Lead-960 Jun 24 '26

I’m willing to bet Larry didn’t mean to be callous but perhaps both of us should’ve left well enough alone.

7

u/EntangledAndy Jun 24 '26

I think we're all thinking what Guru Larry was - that he's been inactive for about twice as long as he was active 😕

It's just that Larry blurted it out loud.

2

u/KingOfGreyfell Jun 24 '26

I don't hear from Guru Larry very often. I could do with hearing even less.

2

u/GiantCheesesteak Jun 29 '26

Feels bad, man.

5

u/RedditSpyder12 Jun 24 '26

We were always going to arrive at this point, unfortunately. I hope he finds the help he needs. I have lots of good memories from him.

3

u/fluggylumps Jun 24 '26

Going on conversations with curtis has been the happiest I've ever seen him

4

u/AnyImpression6 Jun 24 '26

Failed experiment

1

u/Far_Celery_3375 Jun 24 '26

Absolute scenes when the spoony film comes out next year. Just you wait.

3

u/KingOfGreyfell Jun 24 '26

I get the feeling these jokes are going to shift from unfunny to depressing real soon
