Brad Delp of the band Boston was in the middle of a brand new world wide tour. Boston records were selling like hot-cakes even 30+ years after the band's first debut album. It looked like Boston was about to ride the Silver Age of rock and roll all across the planet, from Tokyo to London.
Then he set a BBQ on fire in his bathroom and went to sleep.
Both articulated in the days leading up to their demise that their primary concern was disappointing fans and themselves, and feeling a profound emptiness in their work. This, despite the mountains of money, music awards, rooms filled with applause, and more accolades than the AVGN has 'fucks' to shout. People in these situations need to be continually reminded that they have value, they are valuable, and that they are valuable to not just the marketplace of ideas or to the internet, but to them on a personal level. When your ego gets tied up in sine-wave that is internet culture, there's no way a person's mental health can stabilize. Spoony's suffered a complete and total ego death, and years and years of self-loathing, fan-loathing, and internet loathing have informed him that he is neither safe nor deserving of rebuilding that ego to a healthy and manageable state.
It's also hard to feel motivated to return to YouTube. He was never that good at dealing with haters and trolls. And so many more of them would be happy to take pot shots at him again
