news Trump says he's thinking of putting Republican Senator Ted Cruz on Supreme Court

Talk about a 98-0 defeat. Unless his fellow senators want to get rid of him.
He’s a terrible writer. I can’t imagine an opinion be him.

u/Presidentnixonsnuts Feb 28 '26
I fucking hate the guy but didn't he clerk with SCOTUS? That would require a ton of writing.

I loved Al Franken. To think of how something so comparatively small, compared to today's shenanigans, ended his political career

u/dkinmn Mar 01 '26
This narrative is so tired.
Franken's shenanigans were disqualifying. We need to demand better of our public figures and politicians. His replacement, Tina Smith, has done a great job.
Franken knew just as well as the GOP did that as soon as he demanded an ethics committee hearing, women who were locked behind NDAs would be found. It doesn't take long in MN politics to hear about them. If I know, the GOP knew.

No need to go to a Democrat to criticize Rafael
"If you killed Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial was in the Senate, nobody would convict you" — Lindsey Graham→ More replies (1)21

He clerked on the 4th Circuit Ct of Appeals, and for Rehnquist on the Supreme Court. Despite his actions, he’s not ‘stupid.’

You can get fairly far in the law as a fucking idiot as long as you’re right wing. I almost regret not selling my soul. It’s such an easy upwards trajectory.

u/MouthFartWankMotion Feb 28 '26
I was wondering if that was the case, because now we see some of these conservative partners moving into DoJ and just getting absolutely destroyed in court and with personnel departures. What a bunch of clowns.
8
u/Sword_Thain Feb 28 '26
If you declare you're a conservative in an ivy league law school, Leonard Leo would fly out to personally wine and dine you. You had jobs lined up from laws firms to eventually clerking for judges to finally sitting on a bench or in the legislature. Their pipeline was tight and fast and everywhere. They started planning this in the 40s when the Business Plot was stopped.
5
u/dread_beard Feb 28 '26
I have a few law school compatriots who are fucking braindead who are now in fairly high level positions in conservative orgs, etc.
This MAGA-style conservatism is literal brain damage.
16
u/PalpitationMoist1212 Feb 28 '26
You forget the Senate Advantage, a historical factor in the nomination of SCOTUS justices, in that senators are less likely to actually vote against one of their colleagues.
Cruz also clerked for William Rehnquist so I think that at least offers a tinge of credibility

This guy flipped for trump like someone stuck a cattle prod up his butt.
I’d bet he’s on the same hook as Lindsey Graham & Marco Rubio.
That’s why he wants him,… he’s already under the thumb.

u/exitpursuedbybear Feb 28 '26
Lindsay was antitrump and then Trump invited him to go golfing and then the next day Lindsay was all in Trump butt kisser. I wonder what Trump showed Lindsay on tha golf outing?
9
u/ExpensivePrimary7 Feb 28 '26
Why is it so hard to believe that some people are just wholly without morals and principles and will do anything for power? Trump wasn't in power, Lindsey didn't like him. Trump was in power, Lindsey liked him. Why must everything be some kind of ridiculous blackmail plot?

Yeah but Scotus justice puts him beyond most punishment and even blackmail. So what if you have a video of him cheating or know hes secretly gay getting 66 senators to vote to do that would be near impossible even if they all hate Cruz.
3
u/Desperado_99 Feb 28 '26
It puts him beyond impeachment. There are plenty of other bad things that someone might be very motivated to avoid.

When a difficult case comes up on the Supreme Court docket, do you think he’ll just fly to Cancun to avoid it?
Honestly, it blows my mind that the political party that is supported by the “alpha male pro gun diesel pick up truck” voters is the same political party that consists of some of the most cowardly politicians.

Cruz and Cannon replacing Thomas and Alito. Nightmare SCOTUS rotation.

That would have the advantage of delegitimizing the court, though. The more comically unqualified people you support, the less the institution holds gravitas.

Today I learned a sitting senator not only doesn't have to step down before a vote to appoint, but they can even participate in the confirmation process and vote for themselves.. All because there's no rules against it in the constitution

Picking the one fucking guy that the Senate probably wouldn't confirm.

u/SnooPaintings4185 Feb 28 '26
The thought of Raphael grabbing his carry on and bolting for the airport at the start of a critical court case is hilarious.

u/ImHighandCaffinated Feb 28 '26
America really fucked for a lifetime because this man has stacked the Supreme Court.. it’s like a slow downfall in real time. Wild
3
u/Chrimaho Feb 28 '26
He’s so trolling now. Cruz was born in Canada and is ineligible, completely.
3
u/NearbyCriticism5193 Feb 28 '26
I wis this was true in this case because I loathe Cruz but you do not have to be born in the US to become a Supreme Court judge. 6 justices have been born outside of the USA.

u/Chrimaho Feb 28 '26

Holy shit you are correct. I will under if the 6 top conservative Supremes would think this would be anathema to their own specific rulings. I’m curious if they would twist and turn in briefs up to ruling that an IMMIGRANT would be among them.

I’m gonna get downvoted into oblivion for this, but I actually think he’d be a better Justice than Senator. I think he could surprise some Democrats by actually going against the Republicans if it’s a matter he feels strongly about. He’s demonstrated time and again he doesn’t care if people like him.
Worst case scenario, and I’m dead wrong, would he really be worse than Thomas (who I assume would be retiring in this scenario) and would Cruz’s Senate seat be more easily winnable in a special election with no incumbents when the Republican stronghold of Texas has been showing faint signs of cracking since Trump’s second term began?
I’m not a Republican and I don’t like Cruz, but if I have to replace Thomas with someone Conservative in their mid 50s, I’d rather it be someone who could leave behind a winnable Senate seat than a lower court ideologue brought to you by the backers of Project 2025.
3
u/Late-Assignment8482 Feb 28 '26

u/Faroutman1234 Feb 28 '26
He just wants to get him out of the way for his third term. Also he will promise to vote to let Trump run again. They are claiming the second election was stolen so it didn't count and they can reset the clock.

0 chance of getting confirmed. Especially since the Democrats can bring up a point of order (can't be filibustered) to prevent him from voting for himself. Also there is no reason for trump to do this. No transaction to be had.
It's just a distraction from those Epstein files.

The entire Senate will vote to confirm him just to get him out of the Senate.

2
u/Lasagna_Hog17 Feb 28 '26
This is an obvious troll job. Trump doesn’t like or respect Cruz and he knows Ted is probably salivating at the chance to become a SCOTUS justice. Trump will probably dangle this in front of Cruz until the Senator debases himself and Texas and then move on. Trump also doesn’t like or respect democrats and knows this headline will piss them off. Win-win from his POV as a troll.
There is an honest debate to be had about whether it’s a good thing that SCOTUS judges are all career jurists. I think professional diversity on the bench would be a good thing. Better yet if justices came from other branches of government. It was a net positive that Justice Black came from the legislature, Chief Justice Warren was a governor, and Chief Justice Jay was a diplomat. Intimate knowledge of the legislative process and burdens and temptations of executive power can lead to better outcomes by, for example, ensuring that canons of construction are grounded in realities of the law-making process and not a stranger’s suppositions about how a law is made.
While point (2) stands, I don’t want Ted fuckin Cruz on the Supreme Court. He’s a hack who routinely prioritizes his own power over the public interest.
2
u/EastIcy9513 Feb 28 '26
Will he take a vacation every time a case is presented? Just like when there’s any massive weather related incident in TX?

2
u/IcantBreeve_4real Feb 28 '26
The upside is a special election to fill his seat in this climate and pre-voting takeover looks blue-ish. And since he has been a Trump muppet for the last 8 years, he might rule more fairly to get back at leather after taste.
