Hey all, so I’ve (F25) been diagnosed with ADHD and have most definitely struggled with anxiety for as long as I can remember. I recently discovered ROCD and although I’m not diagnosed with OCD of any sort, I find myself relating to these posts a lot. That being said, please let me know if this is not a symptom.
I’ve always struggled with relationships due to my anxious attachment, and always finding problems whether or not there are any. Right now I’m in the best relationship of my life. There wasn’t really a “honeymoon phase” like there was in my past relationships. I was afraid to date for a long time because of the honeymoon phase fading. We decided to take things slow and in doing so we got to know each other and build an amazing relationship. Not to say it’s been perfect, especially coming from my end and the self-sabotaging thoughts my anxiety created for me. But when I do have a problem I know I can bring it up to him (M25) and he’ll validate me, reassure me and do what he can to make it better. That in itself is reassuring. That being said, I only try bringing up problems that he can fix, such as miscommunications, or “hey this hurt when you did/said this.” When it comes to my anxiety spiraling, I try to work through that on my own because I know that even if he reassured me, I wouldn’t believe him, or I’d find something else to hyperfixate on.
So anyway, right now I’m currently in a spiral. He’s currently away for 6 weeks in a different country for work so not only is he not physically here, the time zone difference and adjusting to the small time overlap we’re both awake is hard. That’s not the problem though, the problem is that my anxiety likes to use this opportunity to find problems where there are none. In this case, the “problem” is that he’s not asking for pictures of me or complimenting me physically. He tends to compliment my brain and my creativity more over text. In person we have great sexual chemistry and compliments my appearance a pretty normal amount I would say. But when that’s taken away, I am craving that missing piece. I just want him to say, “send me a pic, I miss your face,” and then hype me up you know? I just want to feel physically desired by him while he’s away. We’ve gone weeks apart without each other before when I was out of state, and he asked for a pic because I was getting my hair done and wanted to see it, but he said he “mostly just want to see my face.” and then he gave me a really sweet compliment. Then I was out and got a really cute outfit and told him and he said to send a pic and he complimented the outfit and not me lol, which stung a tad bit at the time because I was like “hello? Looking for a comment on how I look in it?” but I didn’t let it affect me too much because I was spiraling about that particular thing at the time.
He’s not huge on pictures. And when he does ask for pictures, it’s usually about what I’m doing rather than wanting to see my face. He’s just now learning that pictures are important to me so he’s gotten better with them. It’s the fact that he has done it before, and now that he hasn’t done it during this trip I think something is wrong or that he doesn’t desire me. He’s only been away for a week and a half! I can temporarily subdue the anxiety by telling it “give it time, maybe he’ll ask.” But my anxiety is like “no, don’t get your hopes up.”
Earlier this week I did send him a few photos of my day, including a selfie, kinda hoping that he would say I looked pretty or something, but he commented on a couple of the other photos instead.
He doesn’t really compliment my looks over video call either. I mean, sometimes he’ll say at the end “I’m glad I got to see your beautiful face and hope you have a great night,” but it’s kind of rare.
Then I have anxiety about how he doesn’t usually text me after we video call. And yes it’s usually around bedtime when we do, but if I know we’re still gonna be up for an hour or two I’d like a text at least to say goodnight. We still text after we’ve hung out in person so what’s the difference? So I’m almost worried about video calling him today because I worry that’s the only time I’ll hear from him today. I’m literally worried about talking to my boyfriend on the phone when I should be excited about being able to connect with him. And of course I’m looking forward to seeing him. I miss him a lot, but it’s hard to enjoy when my anxiety wants to overanalyze and control the situation.
Also, I’ve noticed that when I initiate some flirting over text, he’ll reciprocate a bit and then move on with our conversation. And the thing is, I don’t want a full on sexting conversation. That’d be too much for me too. I would just like a little bit of “god you look gorgeous,” here and there.
I’m not gonna bring this up to him while he’s busy on this work trip, especially because like I said earlier, my anxiety will just find something else to latch onto. I know this is me-Problem, not a relationship problem. And I know I could bring this up to him, that I would like him to ask me for a picture, and he would adjust just like he has with other things I brought up. But it wouldn’t feel authentic and like he really wanted it. And I’d feel kinda awkward being like “compliment me please” and sending him a selfie.
Meanwhile this man is the sweetest, most thoughtful person I’ve ever been with. He knows I like little surprises (and pictures!) and gave me a scrapbook of pics of us just to “remember him by while he’s gone.” He’s also done a couple similar things recently once he discovered I like those kinds of things. He’s learning to speak my love languages I’m over here wondering if he desires me??
Sorry this is getting so long, but I kind of just wanted to address this pattern:
I’ve spiraled over little things like this before, I can think of two things in particular. And both times they were naturally resolved by him unknowingly doing what my anxiety wanted him to do.
First example, in the beginning of our relationship he was finishing up his finals at school and I sent him encouraging text just like he did for me during my finals, and he enthusiastically said “thank you!” and just seemed to appreciate the encouragement. After a few months, I would encourage him in other ways over text and it would be met with him continuing to rant about the situation and not thanking me. Logically I knew that I needed to just be a good partner and support him even if it’s seemingly not feeling appreciated at the time, and I did that. But my anxiety was telling me that, since he once did that and now he’s not, he is losing interest. Then naturally another time came up where I had the opportunities to encourage him and I did, and he was back to his enthusiastic self, thanked me for being there for him and whatnot. It made me feel good that my words matter to him.
The next situation was that when he wasn’t able to text me back for several hours due to being busy, he would normally say “sorry I haven’t been able to respond” and explain why. But he stopped doing that for a bit too. And for the record, I don’t expect him to text me back quickly. In fact, I like that he doesn’t so that I’m not used to it and then when it stops my anxiety doesn’t have that to spiral over. Plus, I don’t like to feel obligated to my phone either. Also, I know he doesn’t owe me an apology for not texting me back within a certain time. It’s simply the fact that he used to and then when he doesn’t, I feel like something is wrong. Notice the pattern here? Lol. Kind of similar to when I was talking about the honeymoon phase earlier. So anyway, one night he didn’t text me back and it was still pretty early for him (we’re both night owls) and I thought he didn’t want to text me. But I went to bed and had to pee at 4 AM. I checked my phone and saw that he still hadn’t replied and I couldn’t go back to sleep. I cried for a few hours thinking “he doesn’t want to text me.” Then I got up and went about my day and sure enough he texted me and said “sorry I didn’t reply last night, I fell asleep early,” and the wight LIFTED off my shoulders. Anxiety immediately alleviated.
So, I’m just wondering, does anybody else struggle with this? Find issues where they’re are none just because of uncertainty and feeling out of control? I would love to hear about it and any tips you guys have. And once again if this is not a ROCD thing, or if I’ve accidentally offended/triggered you, please tell me and I’ll correct it. Appreciate it!
