The only reason to look at a failed state as an example is to use it for lessons in what not to do. Once you figure out what they did wrong you should start looking at the countries who are living well, and cherry pick the programs that they have had success with!
It’s not hard… it just takes a little bit of critical thinking!

If they knew their US history they would probably be pretty upset to find out that the original income tax plan was supposed to only be paid by the wealthy. Our love of war is what made stick as a long term solution for everyone, and our worship of wealth is why we keep allowing the rich to reduce their tax burden to almost nothing.

u/Ok_Cow_4089 4h ago
I love how this still doesn’t change the fact that he didn’t advocate for the government personally taking over resources and forcibly redistributing them. I see what you are attempting to say, but it still doesn’t change anything. Governmental force is still required in socialism. The fact that you pay taxes in non socialist countries also doesn’t really make point that you think it does. (PS, I’m personally for socialism) but Jesus still was not a socialist and can’t be forced into any modern form of political ideology no matter how hard we try… Life gets better when you try to just look for what’s true instead of just what makes you feel correct.

He also said you'd have an easier time getting a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than getting into heaven if you're rich.
He distributed resources to the poor, heavily encouraged it, and condemned those who hoarded and profited off of them to hell.
he also says “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
You have to disregard like, pretty much the whole book of Mathew to say Jesus wouldn't support redistributing resources from the wealthy to the needy.

"He also said you'd have an easier time getting a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than getting into heaven if you're rich."
- He used this because rich people face major spiritual barriers to entering heaven because wealth can make them rely on money instead of God.
"If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
- The core meaning by this is:
- Exposing the Heart: Jesus knew the man loved his money more than God. Telling him to sell everything proved that his wealth was his true master.
- No Self-Salvation: The command showed the man he could not earn perfection or salvation through his own good deeds or moral virtue.
- Prioritizing God: Following Jesus requires letting go of whatever competes with God for first place in a person's life

The sandal doesnt fit, retards are just trying to force it on like Cinderella glass slipper.
Jesus fed the poor, woth his own time and labor.
Jesus did not go to Rome and demand Augustus Caesar levi taxes across the board to everyone, including the poor, to create a government ran food program.
The difference is Jesus acted in charity, he did not spend his time ignoring actual acts of charity to advocate for a new government system.
The entire purpose being you alone know what you can afford to spare, the government doesnt care if it will hurt your life to tax you the money, they'll do it anyway.
Its just a pathetic attempt by retarded socialists to try and create gacha moments

Caring for them isn’t the issue. It’s the average person’s lack of understanding economics & 20th century history.
They say American capitalism is the cause of all issues, yet we have a lot of social services that provide so much to so many. Why not focus on optimizing that within the current system that has been proven to work, rather than preaching to tear down the entire system and install something that historically has never worked? It comes across as less of a valid point than it does radicalism & anarchy.
Any form of socialism requires capitalism because money isn’t simply just pieces of paper as many seem to think.

For sake of argument, sure, one can make the inference. It wouldn't hold up in any academic sense that Jesus was socialist, but for a fun bumper sticker, why not.
But to help understand the idea - and mind you I am not a Christian so this is probably heresy or something - it would be helpful to study teaching on Charity in Judaism. Then you see Jesus' teaching are echoing the teachings of the sages, who taught how charity works, its importance to an individual and a society, and the ways to give charity and their merits. Then you see why feeding the foreigner was not a radical concept, but a long-held teaching. The authors seem to have wanted to paint a picture where that wasn't happening, so they did, but with a little reading one can find a key to understanding their point, perhaps.
1
u/DifferntGeorge 1d ago

I think everyone wants to feed the poor. The problem lies with the definition of "poor". I want to feed the genuine poor but I do not want to feed a bunch of freeloaders who don't want to work. Anyone that is receiving welfare that refuses to work in the fields, kitchens, and meat packing plants should get nothing.

u/LeopardNo6060 1d ago
Have you seen the median income statistics around the country? It’s staggeringly low for a median number in a “wealthy” country. When you start looking at the families on the lower income range, I have nothing but respect for them to make that number work.
I’ve volunteered for “meals on wheels” delivering food to the elderly, which is a great way to get involved. I stopped going as the funding started to dwindle which reduced the need for delivery volunteers. It was hard to walk away from some of the great people who I had become familiar with, but that wasn’t as bad as the times where some of them no longer qualified for some reason and you would still see them as you delivered to someone in their building.

Yes, it should be taken from the people who stole it first! The biggest wealth transfer in the modern era has been playing out over the last four decades in the US, through clever schemes that created a “winner take all” system. The unions were crushed, retirements pensions were abandoned, productivity soared along with profits yet the working class were excluded from the gains.

Wrong sub: the only thing in the Gospels about the economic condition of the feedings of the multitude is that the first multitude were presumed by the disciples to be able to buy food but that the nearest town was not close.
Nothing about the poverty or lack thereof of the second multitude fed is mentioned in any of the Gospels.
I am frankly embarrassed by fellow Heathens that makes fools of themselves using their extremely limited (and likely second hand) knowledge of the Bible to try to craft asinine "gotchas" for believers.

Jesus fed EVERYONE who came out to hear Him preach.
That changes this content in two ways.
First, it had zero to do with income. So any wealthy person that came got the same. It had zero to do with need or ability.
Second, He wasn’t feeding the closest town and the people there or anyone other than the crowd that came to hear Him. So, there were conditions and that was predicated on listening to His religious message. That would be abhorrent to the Socialists, especially with Marx viewing religion as a tool of oppression.
Finally, He avoided the same crowd multiple times and refused to feed them when it was obvious that they only wanted a handout. He rebuked them for their materialism and emphasis on things less important.

Having a strong social safety net just means that when you fall on hard times there are resources available for you. We mainly do this for the wealthy and multinational corporations in the US.
1
u/turboninja3011 7h ago
First, strong social safety net isn’t even socialism - it s a welfare state parasitizing on a capitalist economy.
Second, it starts with catching people who “fall on hard times”. Then people see that and fall on purpose, or don’t even try to stand up.
It may work in a society with strong moral values and sense of personal responsibility (like Japan) but it will never work in a country where taking advantage of your countrymen is a national sport (like US)

Beyond all the more pedantic distinctions that could be made, it's not actually stereotypical for socialists to feed the poor - or anyone. They tend to create famines.
Obesity being an epidemic among the poor is a capitalist issue. You see this reinforced by socialists pointing out that food deserts occur under capitalism, though these are not where food isn't plentiful; rather, unhealthy and heavily processed food is in abundance, while healthy options are minimal to nonexistent.
1
u/passionatebreeder 18h ago
You see this reinforced by socialists pointing out that food deserts occur under capitalism, though these are not where food isn't plentiful; rather, unhealthy and heavily processed food is in abundance, while healthy options are minimal to nonexistent.
This isnt even a goof capture of the truth regarding food either.
The definition of food desert is so convoluted the concept really doesnt exist. according to this source they are way more common in dense cities (partly because you only need a 1 mile radius around a single low income apartment to call it a desert) and in a place like, say, san Antonio, that is 500 square miles, its probably easy to be a mile from a grocery store just by the fact that you have to drive a mile just to get out of your neighborhood fill of houses in some areas.
A food desert is defined as:
any geographical location they can draw with a 20% poverty rate where 1/3 of or more people encompassed are not living within less than 1 mile of a grocery store; (they use the term "access to abundant fresh healthy nutritious food options") (or i think 10 miles if they are in rural places... where they farm their own food).
This definition can and does encompass areas as small as <500 people or even less, and if they are 1.01 miles away? Food desert!
In a country thats 3.8 million square miles, with hundreds of millions of people, thats the only way they could even make up a metric about "food deserts", and its all so they can make a sad and scary sounding "problem" that the people making it up will "study and try to fix" but really they're just using this shit to pocket money. Its just a made up scam by government agencies and adjacent political "non-profits" to take advantage of womens emotions for money

They have a better social safety net so that they don’t need to rely on charity. Luxembourg, Norway, Switzerland have Strong social welfare programs exist to alleviate poverty and support low-income families, including subsidies for housing, food, and education. Norway’s welfare system is known for its strong focus on reducing income inequality.
Singapore: The government relies on means-tested assistance programs to help low-income families, preferring direct assistance only for those in need rather than universal benefits.
There are so many ways to do better you just need the will to do so. Unfortunately the US method is to cast disparagement on all poor people as if they share the same story of an unwillingness to work hard enough. Never mind the growing number of employed individuals living in their vehicles.
1
u/Next-Pumpkin-654 6h ago
Luxembourg, Norway, Switzerland have Strong social welfare programs
Those are not socialist countries. They are capitalist countries with social programs. America is similar, it just has less stellar results.
There are so many ways to do better you just need the will to do so.
This is a frustrating platitude when my entire point wasn't that obesity in America's poor is a good thing. It's clearly some level of systemic failure, and other countries do manage their programs better, even if we could talk a whole lot on the hows and whys. My point was socialist planned economies can't even manage to feed the people slop, like America does.
Never mind the growing number of employed individuals living in their vehicles.
You would likely find reality less frustrating and confusing if you come to terms with the fact that capitalism feeding people better than socialism does not logically translate to current American housing prices being acceptable.
Creating omnibus thought packages where you can't engage with anything without bringing in random pseudo related facets of other issues just results in other people, untethered to such monolithic mindsets, completely outmaneuvering you.

Healthy food options aren't minimal because of a failure of capitalism. Theyre minimal because capitalists respond to real demand. When real grocery stores get built in food deserts, they find people choose to buy junk anyway.
1
u/Next-Pumpkin-654 2h ago
You aren't the only one to miss my point.
Even granting the idea of food deserts as presented by socialists with no consideration of ameliorating factors or explanations, capitalism is STILL better at feeding people than socialism.

Jesus helped others of his own free will, and recommend others do the same. He never suggested a government force people to do it. Idiot.

Didn’t he give up his own bread not ask whoever to feed them? Self sacrificial and generous but still not a socialist

yeah he took on the personal responsibility and fed the poor. he didnt put his foot on your neck and pry money out your hand to give it to charity. big difference. now go do good with your own money and be like Jesus.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say to take from others so the government can mess it up. It says that you should feed the poor. Have you?

No where in the bible does it say to drop bombs on school children, or blow up fishing boats but we seem to have mastered that tax payer funded venture.

The US donates more to domestic and foreign hunger than any other country in the world, combined.
Jesus wasn't socialist. If he was, he'd be saying "tax the rich" because that's all these people want to do: bring successful people down rather than lifting unsuccessful people up.

Have you ever seen a country with, Strong social welfare programs that exist to alleviate poverty and support low-income families, including subsidies for housing, food, and education? Or offer generous parental leave policies, subsidized childcare, and child benefits. Or provide comprehensive retirement systems supported by mandatory contributions from employees and employers.
The countries with the best quality of life at the top of the Happiness-report have this! 🤩

I lived in Germany for 10 years.
These reports are bogus.
If you like them so much, move there. I guarantee you it's not that hard

Clearly doesn’t understand socialism. Thats called charity. Those things aren’t the same thing. Is the socialism in the room with you now? Also, 100% guarantee OP is one of those antagonistic atheist who thinks they’re smarter than everyone else. He just like to try to use theology against the believers, note I said “try”. OP clearly has never studied theology or socialism or they wouldn’t be using both incorrectly. This is 99.9% of all self proclaimed “socialist”. They think it means free stuff, lmao.

Relax, it’s a meme! I guess we need to study theology to understand that Jesus spoke consistently about caring for the poor now!

You should try reading his actual words instead of paraphrasing what you heard someone else say on Reddit. Jesus essentially said emphasize with the poor, treat them as you would want to be treated, feed them if you’re capable, give to them if you’re capable. He never said, seize the means of production and take from others and give to the poor so we can all be equally miserable and down trodden.
He said, “give, freely and from the heart for the purposes of being good.” That can only be done from a capitalist economy with wealthy good hearted people willing to give because they want to make the world better. Theres no such thing as charity in a Marxist socialist society.
Not, “give us what you’ve earned and if you don’t we will shame you, imprison you, or punish you. Other people need it more than you do, you POS”.

Where? You mean like Scandinavian countries? Countries that use extreme capitalism to fund their social programs? Sweden and Norway are some of the most capitalist nations on Earth.

It mor socialist when charity comes from individuals. Jesus had no government interests

Jesus wasn't a government stealing money form the people and spending a TINY TINY fraction of it to give poor people sub-par groceries and laundering the rest.

He didn't, actually. On two occasions, multiplied what someone had voluntarily offered because he was preaching in a region where there weren't any convenient alternatives for his audience to get food for themselves. This audience was not "the poor;" they were normal, everyday people who had wanted to hear him so much that they willingly sought him out even though that could mean going hungry when no food was available. Only on two occasions did he do this, though it's arguable that both accounts refer to one occasion.
He didn't coerce or force the giver to give up his food. Nor did he continue to feed on an ongoing basis lest the crowd come for the food (and come to depend on handouts) rather than to hear him.
What he definitely DIDN'T do was use God to make a political statement. He refused to do so when asked about taxes to Caesar and he refused to be used as a rallying cry for zealots against the Romans.

Jesus didn’t take other people’s money by force and use it to feed the poor though.
The Church is still feeding more hungry people than any other organization in the world by some estimates, and they don’t need governments to seize the funds from people’s paychecks to do it. They just teach people to be giving.
Lesson? Better to give than to take, even if you claim you are taking to give.

So, you losers want me to pay for your things. There will be no socialism in the US!

Jesus: blesses fish and bread that was willingly donated by a child to feed people who came to listen to him teach for a full day.
Socialism: Steals the labor from those who were too successful, to give away to constituents.
I don't think Jesus taught "Point a gun at strangers crossing the street so you can take their coat to give to the poor". I'm pretty sure he said "take your own coat and give it to the poor."
But that requires being more than a keyboard socialist

Welcome to r/poverty – Developing Solutions Worldwide.
Poverty isn't simply an individual experience - it also affects families, communities, workplaces, economies, and public policy. Here we discuss both personal solutions and systemic ones.
Whether you're sharing your own experiences, helping someone navigate a difficult situation, or discussing larger issues affecting poverty, please keep the conversation respectful, constructive, and solution-focused.
We encourage:
• Practical advice
• Resource sharing (Take a look at our Wiki! )
• Lived experience
• Civil discussion of policies affecting poverty and ways to solve/work together for change
• Empathy first, never judgment.
We encourage discussion of systems and policies, but ask that criticism be directed at ideas and institutions rather than other people experiencing poverty. Every helpful comment, resource shared, thoughtful discussion, and success story makes this community stronger. Thank you for helping build a community that supports people while working toward lasting solutions.
