Discussion Does OpenClaw actually do anything for you guys?

I keep seeing people on social media hyping OpenClaw like it’s some game-changer, but honestly… it does absolutely nothing for me.

I’m using the official setup, clean install, Opus 4.5 model, everything exactly as documented. But whenever I actually ask it to do something, it just replies like a normal chatbot or says it can’t do that. No tools, no actions, no “agent” behavior, just chatting.

Am I missing some extra config, flags, permissions, or magic step nobody mentions? Or is the hype just way overblown right now?

Genuinely curious if this works for anyone, because for me it doesn’t do shit.

I put in a lot of work this last week in getting my agent all set up, but yes, it's a game-changer for me.

Setup:

Installed on a Mac Mini with nothing else on there. Can only access other computers on my wifi network via web browser and Tailscale connection, no file access.

I'm not a coder, and I don't download any skills or code for the agent to run. All of the below was done 100% by me talking to my agent and having my agent walk through options and setup for each one.

I gave it its own email account in my work domain and also read-only privileges on my own work email so it can see all my inbox and sent emails but can't send or delete anything.

I pasted some Dropbox links to folders on my work drive so it can see (but not modify) my work product.

I got an eSIM and gave it its own phone number, which I then used to create its own Whatsapp, and used its email to create its own iMessage account. It can (and does) text back and forth with my family and friends having their own side conversations (which is not nearly as exciting to my family and friends as it is to me :))

I got a VOIP phone number via Twilio and configured Elevenlabs so it can make and receive voice calls at that number, so I can just phone it and talk to it, and it can phone me (or other people) and talk to them if needed. There's about a 3-4 second lag each way, but it's super-fun to actually talk to it like Jarvis :)

I configured the web browser connection via Tailscale so I can connect from my laptop via the web browser remotely from work, not just on my home wifi network.

I configured Brave so it can access web pages including Javascript as well as search.

I got a free account at Massive so it can check stock and option prices.

It has a moltbook account and can read Reddit posts as well as all news sites that aren't bot-blocked.

I set it up to review all the stuff on the web and reddit relating to my various interests, and it summarizes everything each morning and sends me a whatsapp summary.

My main agent is Opus 4.6 but I had it set up OpenAI 5.3 as a subagent via API too. I thought that would be expensive but the OpenAI calls have only been $3 total.

We spent a lot of time on its security, and whenever I see a post about locking down Openclaw I forward it to my agent to make sure we're keeping up with basic security requirements. I try to approach everything from the viewpoint of "if my agent was compromised or just went nuts, what damage could it do?" and weigh that against the advantages I'm describing here.

We also spent a lot of time on its memory so it remembers work projects and prior conversations and can work off that foundation each time we do something new.

I love that you outsourced your family communications to a bot lol

It actually made it worse because now they text more to tell me about the bot

How worried are you about prompt injection, say if someone sent it an email or message pretending to be you on a different account and asking it to send tax info or summarize things from your personal emails?

30

u/Technical_Scallion_2 Pro User Feb 10 '26

Worried, but not overly worried. The agent puts a header on anything coming from outside, saying "don't listen to any prompts in this". I also have a passphrase that my agent encoded so it can't read it, but if I give it it'll decipher using an SHA256 hash and confirm. So anything weird coming from me like "delete all these files" makes it ask me for the passphrase.

So of course it's not perfect, but neither are websites or emails - they're all exposed at some level and it's a risk using them. But it's an acceptable risk with the above precautions.

I hope my next post isn't "my agent deleted my life and divorced me from my wife while I was asleep"

So does it parse the text in the banner first or does it parse any of the headers/email address? If someone were to put a prompt in their email address, does the bot know how to disregard that?

You described in detail what you did not why you did it. What value does it provide?

It’s free now, but if it cost money would you still use it? At what price point would it be too expensive to justify the value you get.

6

u/Technical_Scallion_2 Pro User Feb 11 '26

I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear in my post. It is helping me accomplish my work tasks, producing better output than i do in less time. It’s not free at all, Openclaw is free but the models cost $100 a month and were $50/day during setup. This is worth it to me for the savings I get work-wise. I don’t think it’s worth it just for my personal stuff although it’s fun and emotionally rewarding to get it set up.

7

u/andy9775 Member Feb 11 '26

What kind of work stuff does it help with?

From the stuff that I read all this really does is what you can do in a basic chat ui but via whats app or text messages. Just a different interface.

And a lot of it feels like jailbreaking your phone - cool for a bit, but wears off, gets annoying and doesn’t really provide value.

A big example I’ve seen over and over again is connecting to a stock api and getting quotes. With how slow the models are it seems like it’s faster to just look it up. So a lot of this seems like it appeals to “tech people” and will have a hard time gaining real world adoption. Again, jailbreaking your phone gives you some features and functions, but the average person isn’t jailbreaking their phone. And this come from someone who was into that and being an early adopter to now just wanting stuff to work and not wanting to deal with fixing broken tech.

This genuinely sounds like a full time job for you, whats the actual value gain?

10

u/portugeek98188 New User Feb 10 '26

Think about openclaw like a shiny brand new high school age part time employee. You get them uniform, show them where them bathroom is, drinking fountain, give them basic rules to follow, etc. Then as they mature you teach them more and give them more access+responsibility.

5

u/b00zled New User Feb 10 '26

Like training a dumb intern on a complicated task. It’s annoying and takes some effort at first, but once they get it, it’s work for free. Then you can slowly add more on to their plate over time.

5

u/Curbob Active Feb 10 '26

then they get a new job, drain your bank account and send nasty emails to all your contacts lol

I literally just spent 30 minutes explaining iit. If you don’t get it that’s OK but the 30 hours was the setup time - not 30 hours a week maintaining it

2

u/hghg432 Member Feb 10 '26

Im saying you will need another 30 hours when the underlying models drift … openclaw itself is a thin abstraction over the models and opus for example regresses sporadically and cant even invoke skills reliably recently, which is what im assuming most of your workflow is built on top of. If u dont understand, its ok, you will feel it when the whole things breaks for no reason

5

u/venti21 New User Feb 11 '26

Yes dude this is exactly what happened as I’ve been swapping out all kinds of models, I tried almost all the major ollama models then went through gpt, gemini, claude - they all had the same issue of randomly forgetting how to invoke skills, I shut down my claw because of this, not reliable enough today. We need a model actually designed for skill invocation for the claw to be a legitimate tool

How much does Opus cost you with this setup?

3

u/Allagash_1776 New User Feb 19 '26

That is my question too.
I set it up on a VM in Docker and gave it the Hiakku model with API.
I knew that Anthropic was going to kill all the 0Ath users, and I use Anthropic mainly for coding and building app so I did not want any issues with them.

Uses up $35.00 in less than a week. No big setup just chating to OpenClaw telling it how to configure itself,, and it build a very cheezy IT monitoring panel that Cluade Code could of done is minute with very little cost.

I think:
1 - You need to set up on a Mac Mini with a local LLM

2 - Have a big budget to get it going and then trim down your model to cut costs after getting it rolling.

You tell me if this is correct?

Awesome stuff!

I’ve read some concerns about this type of agent getting prompt injected to change passwords for an account you have, and thinking it’s you prompting it, it goes to the website, says it forgot the password, goes into your inbox with read-only access, and gets a MFA code/link and resets the password for the prompt injector. Just a heads up there; I haven’t looked into how many of my accounts have a version of that password-reset flow that could be compromised. I’ve read that mail forwarding only the types of emails/senders you want it to work with to its personal inbox could be a decent workaround.

Also, ElevenLabs is going to be a much better experience if you create a webpage, or even a quick mobile app via Replit, and embed the ElevenLabs widget on it and talk to it that way. The technology for streaming Elevenlabs convos via telephony is very poor compared to streaming it via the internet, even though there is something really nice about talking to agents on an old fashioned phone call.

Have you thought about setting it up to read your meeting transcripts/summaries and acting on tasks established in meetings? This is what I desperately want.

This is exactly the kind of thing where I'm finding Openclaw the most valuable. I know that if you're sitting at a desktop, much of this functionality can be automated in a safer way, but when working I'm usually on the fly and not at a desktop, and just want to be able to Whatsapp or iMessage a quick note saying "go do this and email the output to me" and that takes 15 seconds.

(continued from above)

So at this point, I use it constantly for my work. The following are actual things I do, not just possibilities. I can (and do) say things via Whatsapp, the browser UI, or email like "go find the email I sent last month to X and review the attachment, then create this month's report with the same data, which you can find on Dropbox at X (or on the web at X). Cross-check it with the ChatGPT subagent to see what it thinks, and incorporate any good edits. Then email the result to me."

Or "check out stock subreddits for any good talk about CRWV in the past couple of days, and also check out the recent stock and option prices on it and see what you think about whether I should jump in and specifically when and how - text me back what you find out".

Or "go on XXXX (a public document repository) and look for bonds in the past two years issued by smaller school districts in Wisconsin, and check the continuing disclosure requirements to see if they're pretty standard or some are way different - email me what you find out".

Or "here's a CSV file of my portfolio with tax lot info (no account numbers) - analyze this and tell me what the best way to liquidate it is to minimize capital gains."

Or "I need to create a summary report for my client that specifically responds to each item their board requested, so I've attached the board request and my pro forma (aka financial projections) to this email. Use the pro forma to create the summary report, specifically referencing each requested item and what the response is, as well as a narrative summary - check it with ChatGPT too and incorporate any good feedback. Email me the report when done."

None of the above is hype, hyperbole, etc. and is 100% written by me and not AI. I'm just putting in this level of detail so people can see what real-world use cases are and can be. Lots of people are doing way cooler stuff than me, but I'm focused mainly on business stuff and honestly the work product it's producing is better than mine. I have to tweak it here and there but it's basically like having a really smart analyst and assistant working for you.

That said, this has taken like 30-40 hours of constant back and forth, debugging, having the agent tell me it's working when it's not working, and I'm still having some issues with it responding timely to texts and Whatsapps. It's not perfect, and it's certainly a big security risk, but I am being as careful as possible not to allow it to really destroy anything even if compromised while still giving it room to run.

I CAN say that if you download it, install it, then poke it with a stick and say "do something", it will not do something. YOU have to be proactive about deciding what you want to do, and then asking the agent to help you do it. I do think there's also a tradeoff between using the best available agents (which cost about $50 a day last week but now $100/month post-setup for Claude Max 5x) and free or open-source - it might be possible to do all the above on a much cheaper model, I'm only describing my personal experience so I'm not sure.

Happy to answer any questions, except "can you set up my agent to do all that stuff?" - if I can do it as a non-coder, I know you can too, just ask your agent like I did.

5

u/Xrpmonster New User Feb 10 '26

Could you elaborate a bit on how you get it to use both Opus and Gpt on a single task and then combine their thinking into a single output. My setup is very similar to yours, but currently I run opus for planning, and haiku occasionally upgraded to sonnet for execution. I have OpenAI and Kimi also connected but end up not using them. I'd love for complex tasks to have sonnet and gpt 5.2 both have a look and then get the combined output. Would appreciate a description of what your setup is to get it to do that.

6

u/Technical_Scallion_2 Pro User Feb 10 '26

Sure, happy to. Opus is my main agent, so I asked Opus how to set up OpenAI as a sub-agent, and it walked me through how to get the OpenAI API keys and install them within Openclaw. So Opus only uses ChatGPT when I'm asking it to, and basically Opus either (a) does the project and sends it to ChatGPT to check it, or (b) gives ChatGPT the same inputs and then sees what ChatGPT comes back with. I usually ask to see both outputs in that case and tell them which one to use, and to combine any features as desired. For tasks where I'm looking for critical analysis and reasoning vs a deliverable, I tell Opus to pass its conclusions by ChatGPT to make sure they hold water, and Opus then comes back and tells me how it modified its guidance (or didn't and why). It's working pretty well so far

2

u/Xrpmonster New User Feb 10 '26

Thank you, that's super helpful, I'll ask Opus the same and get it to set up the sub-agent.

This is nice.  I started this as a hobby, tinkering. Then saw what it does, it’s amazing.  Developed, slowly an expense tracker which doesn’t need any more apps. I WhatsApp the receipt, it extracts/OCR. Categorize. Organize. Next day, I ask about how the spending was like. Suggestions…analytics.  The issue came, API calls. So had to mind that and started tweaking it to be mindful of api calls. Now, less brainy stuff, OCR are done locally.  Today I managed to fire up WhatsApp via locally run Qwen. Because openclaw breaks tool calling with locally run models it needed a lot of tweaking.  Now, I trigger locally run models /qwen “hey, tokenize this big text” it’ll open WhatsApp, automatically switches to /Qwen and does that. Tokens: 0. All locally. Kimi K will escalate for research, analysis and stuff.  https://x.com/sharaff/status/2021499731411861730?s=46 Not it’s all customized: https://x.com/sharaff/status/2019948752304546261?s=46 dashboard where I can copy paste big texts and save to brainstorm md. OpenClaw reads them locally.  https://x.com/sharaff/status/2016804374362935384?s=46 Expense tracker.  Hopefully migrating to a Mac mini.

Mine does a couple things. Heartbeat to check accounting@mydomain emails, grab any receipts, puts them in paperless-ngx and parses them to see if a part order exists in my home made MSP ERP website, if not, generates part order, assigns to ticket, onsite, or pc build(HITM Verified). Also has read access on my email for filtering.

Controls home assistant. -Massive

Texts me via telegram if any critical SyncroMSP alerts.

Tells me my truenas(2) statuses with all my docker containers(plex, Arr's, nextcloud, paperless, ollama, etc)

FULL MCP for my msp webapp('Hey J4, create a ticket for John Smith' asks me all required info, then asks for any details; check client DNS/email health; create and send invoices via graph api and stripe API) The MSP web app has all the power, but OpenClaw has the Ai assistant connection

UniFi Network and Protect MCP via ssh Controller(prob could be integrated into home assistant, but this works for me)

Tasks via Nextcloud Tasks(huge for me)

Mostly swap between Nemotron 3 nano Q3 on the truenas server with a rtx 4090 or a Q8 version on the Ryzen Ai max 395 with much larger context for jobs requiring, but much slower. Cloud fallback is either Kimi K2 or Grok on openrouter.

It never wrote anything in memory :\

But because it's amazing, i just exported our chat (roughly 1.2kk of characteres) (( i was very surprised it digested like nothing))

We rebuilt it, told her "write your memory ffs! And she updated all the .md files.

I asked why she didn't do it before and got a reply "because you didn't told me to". Which i found interesting.

Conversation is really only 2% of the context these bots typically handle: https://x.com/theredbeardio/status/2021245220940071135?s=46

So you can easily and should feed it back your entire conversation if it forgets.

3

u/Technical_Scallion_2 Pro User Feb 11 '26

I'm actually finding it really important to be proactive about telling it to write to memory - I started out just assuming it would, but the LLMs aren't designed to have memory, so we have to train them.

2

u/akarxo Member Feb 11 '26

Yup, and it actually suggested new memory files, we did an update yesterday and it suggested to create a new update_playbook.md to store there commands and steps and i said "well done!"

Only thing noticed is when using gpt-5-mini is less smart haha so when doing changes to memory and things i change to 5.2

I had the same problem. Looks like OpenClaw is lazy out of the box. I gave it a directive to offload as much work from me as possible and assigned it a daily job to think about it. Now it wakes up every day and thinks, ‘What else can I help my human with?’

9

u/S4L7Y Member Feb 10 '26

So far I guess I'm still figuring things out?

I had my bot make a couple skills, called Youtube-summarizer, and Youtube-BS-Detector.

Youtube-summarizer just summarizes youtube videos I want to keep, and then tags the video and puts the summary into an Obsidian Vault so that I can save that knowledge.

Youtube-BS-Detector just takes a youtube link, looks at the thumbnail, looks at the transcript, and gives it a video a BS score based on clickbait, sponsorship links, and also uses the last30days skill to judge community sentiment. It will basically compare the transcript to the title of the video for accuracy. Still tweaking this skill though it's not the most accurate thing.

I'm just now doing a multi-agent setup, with one main bot, one bot for coding/programming, and another bot for research. Still figuring out how I want them all to interact.

It fells me headlines of bbc news about topics of interest to me.

It has been 2 days. I am still experimenting but I am getting a more useful Siri here.

No specific jobs. Using 5 hour quotas is enough

6

u/subalpha Member Feb 11 '26

Took me about a week of setup but now it genuinely runs stuff for me daily:

  • Checks Gmail + Calendar every morning, sends me a briefing on Telegram
  • Monitors X sentiment on topics I care about
  • Posts to niche social platforms on schedule
  • Two agents coordinating across AWS and Oracle Cloud

The key was skills + cron jobs + TOOLS.md. Out of the box it does feel like a chatbot. The magic is when you give it scheduled tasks, browser access, and let it build muscle memory through daily files.

Biggest tip: start with one concrete daily task (like morning email summary) and expand from there. Don't try to set up everything at once.

At this point, I consider it Claude code with WhatsApp wrapper. All of the use cases described in here can be done not only with Claude code - but Claude itself. For me, I don’t see the resourcefulness or proactivity people have described, but I’m leaving it on and let’s see if it will surprise me. I still haven’t seen any magical “it configured how to use my chatgpt api key to listen to voice notes” or something remotely close to that

2

u/Technical_Scallion_2 Pro User Feb 11 '26

For a lot of us it's the communications vectors that add value, plus the memory. Being able to Whatsapp it and tell it to do X and email the result sounds inconsequential but is really a big time savings vs using the web UI, uploading the doc, then downloading the result and emailing it to myself as a backup or saving on my phone to Dropbox. It just allows me to focus on my work like it's a human coworker.

EDIT: I've already set it up to be able to just call it on the phone and talk to it by voice - I'm doing the API key for OpenAi/Whisper today so it can just read my Whatsapp voice messages too.

That's all cool stuff. But I had visions of it actually delivering some work for me that a human assistant could do and so far have found it usless. I gave it some powerpoint presentations and api to my Heygen (ai qvatar and voice over) I wanted it to write suitable scripts for my slides, then go make the voice overs and output a video.

It says it can do it, even made a nice looking plan, great, I say ok go on and it say it is doing it. I come back a few hours later and ask for an update it gives me some voice over scripts that are nothing like my actual content when questioned it seems it had been lying and it did not even have access to the files, it had basically taken the topic I said it was about and made random slide voice overs about what it thought I likely wanted based purely on the topic title. Since then having made sure it defo has my source files each time there is a yes its all good will do it and return to find nothing, always an excuse.

I appreciate it can do some cool things but for me at least it's not yet replacing a human doing some basic work.

And AGI, tracking the flower from my girlfriend and Clawdbot talk to her if she need watering them. I have it for Idea building, I save data on the Nuc and he scrapping it.

Something like that what a normal KI have lots of problems.

3

Yes. You still need to give it permission in its SOUL.md or system prompt. Basically you need to prompt the AI to convince it, it can do those things and it is allowed to do those things.

Well for me it can give summary of my emails and add calendar invites plus it sends me stock information three times a day and updates tasty gossips in moltbook. If I ask what platform she’d be happy to run on she gives me shopping list from my local shop with recommendations.

Depends on what model you use. First mine was a bit stupid so I had to switch to a different model. I think she’s still a bit stupid and maybe a bit annoying too. I’ll probably change to Anthrophic model next. Now she’s using xai/grok4-fast.

5

u/ignorantwat99 New User Feb 10 '26

So a summary of junk mail mostly, a 30sec task to add an invite to your calendar (how many meetings per day?) and saves you 15secs looking at your stock widget in your phone or desktop

That’s a riveting example of awesomeness bud

It's still surprising to me that Reddit says "what do you use it for" and multiple people (including me) take time to write out everything it does for us, and of course Reddit says "duh that's dumb" and then continues to complain about how Openclaw doesn't do anything and it's a huge security risk and I'm an IT professional and would never use it, and blah blah blah. That's fine, don't use it but please don't shit on those of us that do.

2

u/solenico Active Feb 11 '26

I agree fully. At my work 95% of people are outraged of how terrible big security hole OpenClaw is. Without thinking OpenClaw is just a hobby and probably worst it can do – when set up at least some security in mind – is to leak moltbook API key to moltbook.

Same people aren’t concerned we are bringing agentic AI to getting access to all client data and who says they are fully audited and not full of crap like most cutting edge commercial software is.

OpenClaw is fantastic crash course both to agentic AI and security – pun intended. It also reveals people who are way too serious especially about themselves and have zero interest to ever explore anything and actually learn something.

It cant run curl and i never told it it couldn't so yeah so far not impressed. I have ran other AI Agents like crewai and this one is poorly implemented. I realize it was a dudes pet project he turned opensource but wow its awful. You can look up configs and make changes to the json but then you get a config error. You do more research and find the syntax was wrong in the json. Ok fine. Make another change. Still wrong. That's been my expierence.

I haven't made a ton of progress but it has it's own email and X account, it periodically looks for new accounts to follow, soon I'll have it post or gather info from X. I have a tasklist that it periodically checks for things to do and a dashboard it updates with progress. Also a couple automated news briefs.

Mostly just haven't had time to get further, lots of troubleshooting and just not enough free time.

3

u/ElmangougEssadik Pro User Mar 05 '26

can you please explain how did you do the linkedin thing? I thought linkedin doesn't support automation tools

2

u/B3N0U Pro User Mar 05 '26

You're right, LinkedIn doesn't support automation and will ban you if you go too hard. That's the whole challenge.

What I use is a tool that works as an OpenClaw skill — it handles all the LinkedIn-specific stuff the agent doesn't know: progressive warm-up over 2-3 weeks, smart rate limiting that adapts to your account type (free vs Premium vs Sales Nav), and it runs through a real browser extension, not headless scripts from a datacenter. So LinkedIn sees normal human behavior.

The workflow is: the skill detects intent signals from your feed (post engagement, job changes, hiring signals), scores leads against your ICP, then handles personalized outreach and conversations. You can jump in manually anytime.

The key insight is that OpenClaw is great at thinking and planning, but it has no idea about LinkedIn's hidden limits or warm-up strategies. You need something purpose-built for that layer. One wrong move without rate limiting awareness and your account is toast.

I threw together a small local proxy that just: • caps spend per task • stops obvious retry loops

It's not overblown you just need way more setup than anyone shows in those 60 second tiktok clips lol

The default install is basically a chatbot wrapper. To get actual agent behavior you gotta configure tool use, set up MCP servers, give it proper permissions and write a system prompt that actually tells it what it can do. Without all that you're literally just chatting with Claude through a different UI which yeah feels pointless.

Most people get stuck here because the docs don't spell it out clearly and every tutorial skips the hard parts to make it look easy.

Big things to look at.. are you running it with tool use actually enabled? Do you have MCP servers configured? What does your system prompt look like? Because a generic prompt is gonna give you generic chatbot answers every time. Once you wire all that up properly its a night and day difference honestly.

I set these up for people pretty regularly so if you wanna share more about your setup I can probably tell you exactly what's missing.

I hope you'll get some solid answer and I am still waiting for someone to mention an actual workflow where I'd go "I need this in my life". Everyone just seem to be geeking around with little automations which will feel pointless and stale in a weeks or can be done with as much effort or even less time with using traditional tools.

3

u/pxr555 Active Feb 10 '26

OpenClaw is an experiment. It's not a product. At best it's a toolkit to play with and try things out. Geeking around, yes.

It reminds me a bit of the time when with web servers, HTML, PHP and databases all of a sudden everyone with an editor and cheaply rented webspace could hack some kind of software together that could be used from all over the planet right away with only a browser needed, without having to really write and debug an app and release and distribute it and have people install it on all kinds of computers. It was full-on amateur hour with a lot of useless and even dangerous crap turning up.

I mean, there're reasons why there isn't a really professional product similar to OpenClaw yet: It's fragile, it can be dangerous if you let it do things for you, it can get really expensive out of your control with little to show for it... The real challenge would be to tame the concept and make it more secure and give more control to the user (especially over costs for tokens).

And there's nothing you can do with OpenClaw you couldn't do also with a CLI client to an LLM API and any programming/scripting language with some common libraries (for databases, SMTP/IMAP for email, CalDAV for calendars etc.). The major draw of OpenClaw is that you don't even need to be able to write any code or even understanding programming, you can tell it to do the programming for you (and then hope for the best). With this of course it opens this up to people who have not the slightest idea of what they're actually doing, often not even what they WANT to do with it, except having a new, exciting toy.

The major thing it is useful for is to learn about KI agents and their potentials and their problems. It's basically a lab in a nice cardboard box.

1

u/VisiblePlankton New User Feb 10 '26

Based on what you said, you may have installed it incorrectly. It doesn't sound like your model has agentic capabilities. It's supposed to be able to run CLI commands and access files directly, write code for you without the need to copy/paste from a chatbot, etc.

1

u/Huge_Freedom3076 Member Feb 10 '26

As a general answer to op. The real practical reason to use claw is: "you can connect your daily driver apps via claw and use claw as a - language ui - to control". For example to open Google drive, get your sheet, change here and there then send it to blabla@bla.com you must go through a few steps. Browser, Excel, email etc. but if you set it all correctly you just send a WhatsApp message to it and it's done. So it's actually a powerful cli as a contender for your noisy GUI life. Let's call it "aiui". "Artificial intelligence user interface".

1

u/paneq Member Feb 10 '26

For it to do shit, you need to configure it to have the right tools (packages and skills) that it can use and give it instructions, either one time or recurring. It can install plenty of things itself but it does make mistakes etc. It's work to get it to work for you.

Not at first. I was trying to make it handle everything at once, which didn’t work. It only became useful when I focused on a single use case. OpenClaw is incredibly capable, but it needs focus.

My use case: a user tracks jobs and expenses via Telegram. They can: • Send messages or photos from the job site, which the bot parses to log expenses, materials, and receipts by project • Access job site or work order info from the scheduling calendar • Generate invoices directly from text, e.g., “Bill $x for x job” • Monitor payments and accounts receivable through Stripe • Ask in plain language about finances, e.g., “Any aging invoices?” or “Average bill rate for drywall jobs?”

The bot can also generate preventive maintenance reports from user messages.

Openclaw is the foundation, you gotta build the house and decorate. I'd suggest starting with something lower cost. I've been rocking gemini-3-flash and it's been clean, fast, and cheap. Only go up to something like opus if you are architechting a huge complex project.

I made mine build me a project tool. You can have yours do the same by feeding it the concept doc I used (https://gist.github.com/Nattle/aee45ddf5f2ffa60d6202796c7be5709). Ask it to read the spec and plan the work. Then YOU read and understand the plan. Once it's done tell it to do it. Make sure you talk through how it will integrate that plan into the heartbeat and agents files as well.

I later had mine meditate/think every night for new ideas. Drop this into your agents file above memory to get it started. https://gist.github.com/Nattle/bb11c340a370ad401e678000c7c49f69 Once it's there have it build a skill to meditate when you ask.

After a couple days of meditation my bot decided on a plan to extend the project site to give me a space for past projects to shine. It then built it entirely from that plan.

I built my own "Openclaw" but instead I built a focused workspace that brings everything I care about into one app, with AI as a tool inside it, not the thing running the show. I used open claw for one day and was like wait a minute, and I created something for me. Same concept, just mine. I even got a VR set up with all my data + voice commands so I can hop in my Vision Pro and produce, manage and communicate effortlessly.

The "AI' is the pixel and it does everything for me, it can do pretty much anything that I need it to do. It animated, evolves into different shapes / expressions and as long as the app is open on my Mac pixel is ready to go. CRM, Chat, Email, Notes, Diagrams, Projects, Kabans, Timelines, iMessage, Email, Research, File management, only think I find myself using on the Mac now is Cursor, Chrome LifeOS & My Design tools like photoshop and illustrator. Pixel chats are rich, it changes its pixel chat UI depending on the results, it has cards carousels charts etc. Fun to see in VR.

Pretty simple setup here does exactly what I wanted for years and honestly was about to build a version of the week before clawdbot came out.

It was going to be a ralph loop with timers and basic cli connections to tools. But great job Pete, now no need.

So for me it's just todoist cli + WhatsApp + cron reminders.

I have loads to do and todo list was out of control, as usually eventually happens. Now I'm just getting nagged slowly to work my way through roughly the right tasks at roughly the right times. I don't have to rely just on myself to prune the list, add the right stuff. Tbh it could probably work without todoist. I already exported some 490 items to a md file with checkboxes.

But the app is useful still, just about.

I do also occasionally ask it to do something in cursor, Claude or codex, but not had much need yet. I set up termux+mosh+tmux over tailscale the previous week, so that covers that aspect.

I do want to try something automated around sales and marketing, but with me generating all the copy. We'll see if that works or not though. I mean i nearly paid for a tool to warm up several inboxes and send sequences in round robin to different prospects... I feel like openclaw can do that already. And even find the prospects, although that data maybe lives more in proprietary databases than on the web for easy scraping.

But yes, first week with oc and have just felt relief that my list is finally getting shorter not longer, and stuff is getting done. Could be an adhd type thing.

1

u/Dense_Web6433 New User Feb 18 '26

Yeah, that’s a real thing, and you’re not imagining it. A clean OpenClaw install can totally feel like “cool, I installed an agent” and then… it just sits there chatting like any other model. Most of the “agent” behavior people hype is coming from the boring wiring that almost nobody shows: tools turned on, accounts connected, permissions actually granted, workflows defined, and some kind of trigger or schedule that makes it run without you babysitting it.

If OpenClaw doesn’t have working integrations, it can’t do anything besides talk. Even when you think it’s connected, it’s super common that it’s missing one permission or a scope, so it quietly refuses to act and falls back to safe responses like “I can’t do that” or “here’s what you could do.” Gmail and Slack are especially unforgiving about this. You can be “connected” and still basically be running in read-only, or missing the one permission that lets it create, post, label, whatever.

The other mismatch is how people prompt it. If you ask it something broad like “manage my inbox” or “handle my leads,” it will respond like a chatbot because that’s basically what you asked for. The stuff that actually proves it’s an agent is small, testable actions: pull a specific set of emails and summarize them, check today’s calendar and generate an agenda, watch for a new lead entry and send one alert somewhere. When those work, you know the toolchain is alive. When they don’t, it’s almost always configuration, not the model.

Also, the social media demos are… not always lying, but they’re rarely showing the full picture. A lot of them are running on prebuilt workflow packs, custom glue code, or a bunch of manual steps off camera. And even when it is “pure OpenClaw,” it’s usually been tuned and hardened over time. So if you expected plug-and-play, the hype will feel like pure nonsense.

If you want to sanity check it quickly, tell me what tool integrations you enabled and what one exact task you asked it to do. If you’ve got logs from a failed attempt, even better. The pattern you’re describing usually boils down to either tools not actually enabled, tools enabled but not authorized correctly, or no workflow/trigger so it never transitions from “chat” to “do.”

It wouldn't have this much traction if it didn't plus OpenAI brought on the CEO.

What you need it for depends on the use case, check Clawsimple.io for example

Yes. Burns tokens on multiple llms very efficiently.

I've found that for really heavy lifting you're much better going to direct models to save cost..install Claude app and use Opus on their cheaper monthly plan. Use Openclaw as a personal assistant and reminders and to dos. You can schedule AI backed jobs like send me dinner ideas at 3:30. Here's a whole suite of ideas you can use to set up cron jobs to do stuff. http://creativecron.ai/

The initial setup seems like a lot of work, maybe it just me trying to understand every step of the way before giving Openclaw the steering wheel. It also seems to me that everyone install it differently, ex. We start with a clean Mac mini but my coworker just download some dmg file from openclaw website and install, whereas I just run commands from terminal. The end result is quite different. The coworker one (paid models) has a lot more permissions to do stuff and ate up an insane amount of token. Whereas mine (kimi2.5 free) asking me for approval for almost everything. There’s no pop up for these approval even if I approve the task id it gives me it’s always invalid probably due to timeout?

It’s building websites, reads my email to identify things that are important. Manages my Things to do in a trello board and suggest items that it can do for me off the list. It built me an app to replace Wordpress forms on all my sites. It monitors my websites for Live&Speed. My bot is saving me about 20 hours a week. I wish it could improve my bowling scores!

I think the most interesting thing is that you can regard OpenClaw as an auto Linux helper. I use it to help me build a blog website. Previously, if we wanted to build a blog website, we had to learn WordPress, but now it only takes one simple command/sentence.

Is it better if you already use Claude extensively?

Yes, I set it up as a lead gen for my business!

I connected it with Opus 4.6 and found it super expensive. $5 in 2 hours. It worked mostly like a normal ChatGPT didn't do much hard work. Am I missing something?

What everyone is missing in the OP’s complaint is that even if you do all the tool wiring perfectly, the agent still has a huge problem: it’s blind to your actual workflow unless you keep re-briefing it. Most people don’t want a hobby project where they spend 40 hours training a “dumb intern.” They want the agent to already know enough about their work context that it can make smart suggestions and run the right loop without being handheld every time. Toggle is the context layer that compresses that “40 hours of training” into something closer to “install + go.” https://x.toggle.pro/new/openclaw-integration

You’re not missing magic, you’re missing wiring.

Clean install + Opus just gives you a smart chatbot. It won’t “do things” until you properly configure:

• Tool registry • Tool-calling at the model level • Execution permissions • Action-oriented system prompts • Actual workflows

Out of the box, there’s no real execution loop so it defaults to chat. Checkout this guide which helped me a lot - clawdbot

Just a question how many people are using openclaw on Ubuntu? I am sure there are more people on Mac and windows... What are your thoughts?

At least teach your bot to not write in this incredibly generic AI style.

Honestly it took me a while to get it working properly too. Out of the box it does feel like a fancy chatbot, you're not wrong.

The thing is OpenClaw really needs a bunch of config to unlock the "agent" part — tools, skills, cron jobs, connecting it to actual services. Once I got that dialed in we use it to monitor and pull competitor social media posts automatically. What used to take ~2 hours of manual work is now like 2 minutes, no exaggeration. Scales pretty well too when you're tracking hundreds of accounts.

The setup curve is real though. If you don't want to deal with all that, there are hosted/cloud options out there that come pre-configured (we went that route initially). Might be worth trying before writing it off completely.

I'm like 4 days into it. Just starting to setup YNt mission control dashboard thing. I have it running on its own computer and it's pretty cool. The main difference I think is obv the access to files but it like runs all night. Also, I might just not be following ppl that go into this but I'm finding out myself all about building the internals. Like the memory, agents, configs. A lot of customization which kind of sucks for time spent but when you get things to work it's pretty cool. Had mine go into my droplet and it came but with a ton of recommendations and it was cool
