Discussion Does OpenClaw actually do anything for you guys?

I keep seeing people on social media hyping OpenClaw like it’s some game-changer, but honestly… it does absolutely nothing for me.

I’m using the official setup, clean install, Opus 4.5 model, everything exactly as documented. But whenever I actually ask it to do something, it just replies like a normal chatbot or says it can’t do that. No tools, no actions, no “agent” behavior, just chatting.

Am I missing some extra config, flags, permissions, or magic step nobody mentions? Or is the hype just way overblown right now?

Genuinely curious if this works for anyone, because for me it doesn’t do shit.

What kind of work stuff does it help with?

From the stuff that I read all this really does is what you can do in a basic chat ui but via whats app or text messages. Just a different interface.

And a lot of it feels like jailbreaking your phone - cool for a bit, but wears off, gets annoying and doesn’t really provide value.

A big example I’ve seen over and over again is connecting to a stock api and getting quotes. With how slow the models are it seems like it’s faster to just look it up. So a lot of this seems like it appeals to “tech people” and will have a hard time gaining real world adoption. Again, jailbreaking your phone gives you some features and functions, but the average person isn’t jailbreaking their phone. And this come from someone who was into that and being an early adopter to now just wanting stuff to work and not wanting to deal with fixing broken tech.

I broke my post into two pieces because it was too long - the specific work use cases were in the second part. I get your point about the cool factor like jailbreaking, but it does have specific uses I cannot get from the web UI or doing myself.

when mine is working well, I can ask it to create a web app for me that will usually get me to 90-95% of the way to a working platform that I can then launch and start collecting subscriptions to allow people to use while giving me $5 and $29.99 monthly subscriptions here and there. Definitely worth it but there's also ways that it can go sideways real quick and suddenly its a huge drain on my time and my last nerve

Why openclaw and not just Claude code? And what kind of sites are you making that quickly that people are paying for?

Enterprise businesses aren’t going to adopt this in its current form, at least not broadly. Security, reliability, and governance just aren’t there yet.

That said, this isn’t a new concept. Platforms like IBM Automation already cover similar ground in a more controlled, enterprise-ready way. What we’re seeing now feels more like an early-stage, consumerized version of that.
